Forgiveness: The Key To Self-Healing— An Interview With Eva Mozes-Kor, Joanie Eppinga Jan 2010

Forgiveness: The Key To Self-Healing— An Interview With Eva Mozes-Kor, Joanie Eppinga

Journal of Hate Studies

Eva Mozes-Kor was ten years old when she and her family were deported from their home in Transylvania to Auschwitz. There, Dr. Josef Mengele was doing medical experiments on twins. Eva’s mother, father, and two older sisters were put to death in the gas chambers, but Eva and her twin sister Miriam were preserved to be subjected to experiments. Eva was given an injection that nearly killed her at the time, and Miriam died of the aftereffects of the experiments many years later. As an adult, having married and moved to America, Eva watched her sister struggle with lingering medical …

Image Sensor Classification System For Prosthesis Control, Daniel Jason Schwandt Jan 2010

Image Sensor Classification System For Prosthesis Control, Daniel Jason Schwandt

Electrical and Computer Engineering

This paper proposes the integration of an image sensor classification system into the control scheme for prosthetic limbs. The goal is to minimize the mental strain experienced by brain-computer interface (BCI) users when performing routine tasks. In particular, the focus is to investigate the capabilities of image classification as a method for identifying and classifying objects. Incorporating this process into prosthesis control will allow more fluid and natural movements while minimizing the mental strain of multiple commands by the user. A popular imaging and classification software package was evaluated by exposing it to various images under different conditions. Results indicate …

A Sensor System Designed For Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscope-Based Coating Performance Evaluation, Yulong Shi Jan 2010

A Sensor System Designed For Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscope-Based Coating Performance Evaluation, Yulong Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering

One of the traditional methods for coating performance evaluation is using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). The theory of using EIS to evaluate coating performance is to measure the coating impedance in a frequency range of 0.01 Hz to 100 KHz. Based on the observation of a number of the EIS data, the coating impedance variation trend in low frequency range has a corresponding impedance variation trend in high frequency range. Based on this idea, this work introduces an EIS-based sensor system designed for coating performance evaluation. The sensor system consists of one base station and one sensor node. Wireless communication …

Pennsylvania Superintendent-Preparation: How Has It Changed?, Sue A. King

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The purpose for this study was to add to the research on school administrator preparation programs by examining and describing the content, structure, and overall design of university preparation programs in Pennsylvania for school superintendents to determine the degree to which the programs of the 26 state-approved providers of superintendent certification are reflective of the current research and theory regarding effective school district leadership, particularly instructional leadership. At a time when public education is under fire from political leaders and the general public, school administrators are expected to design and manage education systems that meet the needs of all learners …

Local Food And Land-Use In Washington County, Oregon, Joshua James Cousins Jan 2010

Local Food And Land-Use In Washington County, Oregon, Joshua James Cousins

Dissertations and Theses

Local food networks are often defined as presenting a variety of alternative food production, consumption, and distribution practices to the conventional food system such as community-supported-agriculture, farmers markets, and community gardens. Local food initiatives are commonly proposed as a model for the future of sustainable agriculture, and in the region of Portland, Oregon the abundance of such alternative venues results from the area's natural surroundings and smart planning. The region is host to 39 farmers markets and Portland is often hailed as one of the country's most sustainable cities. This study examines the role of local food networks in preserving …

The Effects Of Arginine On Reproductive Performance In Ewes, Chelsey Brie Saevre Jan 2010

The Effects Of Arginine On Reproductive Performance In Ewes, Chelsey Brie Saevre

Animal Sciences

Reproductive performance is the largest determinant of income in the livestock industry. In the U.S. sheep industry, embryonic and fetal deaths during pregnancy account for almost half of the total number of fertilized ova and a majority of these losses have been reported to occur before d 18. In study 1, the objective was to determine if arginine supplementation enhances ovarian function and prevents early reproductive losses in sheep. Ewes received L-arginine HCI (equivalent to 27 mg of L-arginine/ kg of BW, ARG, n = 20) or saline (CON, n 20) i.v. from d O (estrus) to d 15. On …

Construction Management Education In Canada: The History Of The Establishment Of Ontario's First Bachelor's Degree In Construction Management, Herman Durazno Jan 2010

Construction Management Education In Canada: The History Of The Establishment Of Ontario's First Bachelor's Degree In Construction Management, Herman Durazno

Construction Management and Engineering

This study examines the establishment of the first construction science and management degree program in Ontario. It illustrates the circumstances that led the Ontario construction industry to recognize the need for such an undergraduate degree program and to seek an educational institution as a partner in the planning, development and establishment of the undergraduate program. The paper displays how the industry faced obstacles such as a plan to regulate the industry by the Ontario government and the lack of incoming construction management degreed professionals from overseas. In addition, the paper displays the differences between existing engineering technology diplomas and the …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Individual Risk Factors And Drug Court Success: An Application Of The Risk, Needs, Responsivity Model, Katie Ann Richardson Jan 2010

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Individual Risk Factors And Drug Court Success: An Application Of The Risk, Needs, Responsivity Model, Katie Ann Richardson

Criminal Justice and Political Science

Research has documented that drug courts can and do work; however, recent attention has focused on how individual characteristics may be related to program success and post program recidivism. It was the purpose of this study to further examine how participant characteristics may impact post program recidivism by applying the Risk, Needs and Responsivity framework. A sample of 104 drug court participants and a matched sample of similar offenders who received treatment as usual was used to test the hypotheses that those who possess certain risk factors may be less likely to recidivate post program because they have been appropriately …
