Lean Manufacturing As A Source Of Competitive Advantage, Ryan Scott Williams Nov 2010

Lean Manufacturing As A Source Of Competitive Advantage, Ryan Scott Williams

Theses and Dissertations

The productivity advances generated from lean manufacturing are self-evident. Plants that adopt lean are more capable of achieving high levels of quality, shorter lead times, and less waste in the system. While it seems logical that higher levels of productivity and quality, as is common in lean companies, should result in positive financial performance, the research community has failed to establish the financial profitability of lean. Those researchers who have studied the financial returns issue report varying results. The goal of this research was to determine if a connection exists between lean and financial success and to discover why so …

Utilizing A Logic Model To Implement Software In A Non-Profit Organization: A Case Study, Krista Hixson Nov 2010

Utilizing A Logic Model To Implement Software In A Non-Profit Organization: A Case Study, Krista Hixson

Purdue Polytechnic Directed Projects

ABSTRACT The need to uniformly, precisely and successfully implement software programs within a company is a necessity that is nearly universal. A company’s desired outcome must be defined to be sufficiently attained. A company’s directive for such an implementation must be clear and concise, with a finite description of the desired goal. Specific procedures and exact goals are required to be organized and effectively communicated. Through applied research, the purpose of this project is to analyze the creation, implementation and goal achievement of a unique logic model for a case study company. An analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of …

Kethelavia: Promoting And Branding An Original Cartoon Using Interactive Website Design, Wenzheng Cui Nov 2010

Kethelavia: Promoting And Branding An Original Cartoon Using Interactive Website Design, Wenzheng Cui

Theses

How to design and promote a cartoon brand are always interesting questions to contemporary cartoon industry. To the rising Chinese cartoon business, they need to find a suitable way for its continuous development. Through reviewing the evolution process of some classical cartoon brands in the world, the history and current status of Chinese cartoon industry, I have found that, cartoon making is no longer purely an art work, but rather a concept of brand design. Like fashion, cartoon brand design asks for a constant self-re-innovation to meet the change in culture and aesthetic standards. On the other hand, new technology …

Bandwidth-Efficient Mimo Underwater Acoustic Communications With Frequency-Domain Equalization, Jian Zhang, Yahong Rosa Zheng Nov 2010

Bandwidth-Efficient Mimo Underwater Acoustic Communications With Frequency-Domain Equalization, Jian Zhang, Yahong Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a bandwidth-efficient frequency-domain equalization (FDE) for single carrier (SC) underwater acoustic (UWA) communications with multiple transducers and hydrophones. the proposed algorithm implements an overlapped-window FDE by partitioning a large block into small subblocks. a decision-directed channel estimation scheme is also proposed to track the channel variation by the detect symbols. the proposed algorithm is tested by undersea data collected during the Rescheduled Acoustic Communications Experiment (RACE) in March 2008. the experimental results demonstrate the proposed receive algorithm effectively tracks the time variation of the channel impulse responses and significantly improves the performance of uncoded bit error rate …

Turbo Detection For Mobile Mimo Underwater Acoustic Communications, Jun Tao, Yahong Rosa Zheng, Chengshan Xiao Nov 2010

Turbo Detection For Mobile Mimo Underwater Acoustic Communications, Jun Tao, Yahong Rosa Zheng, Chengshan Xiao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Turbo detection for mobile transceivers is proposed for high data-rate single-carrier multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) underwater acoustic (UWA) communications. the proposed detection scheme employs a MIMO Doppler preprocessor and a low-complexity MIMO turbo linear equalizer (LE). the Doppler preprocessor estimates the motion-induced Doppler shift and compensates it via symbol resampling. the preprocessed signal is then detected by the MIMO turbo LE that utilizes soft-decision minimum mean square error (MMSE) linear equalization with maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) channel decoding, thus improving the detection performance iteratively while maintaining low complexity. the proposed turbo detection scheme has been tested by field trial data …

How Advanced Are Smart Grids In Latin America?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

U.S. President Barack Obama last year announced the largest single energy grid modernization investment in the country's history, valued at some $8 billion. Other nations have similarly prioritized large-scale investments to modernize energy infrastructure by incorporating information and communication technologies to create a ""smart grid"" that uses two-way communications to better coordinate supply and demand, reduce costs and enhance efficiency. How advanced is the build-out of smart grids in Latin America and the Caribbean? What challenges do smart grids face in the region and how do they factor into the overall context of the energy sector? How will regional integration …

Elementary Teachers' Assessment Beliefs And Practices, Sarah Calveric Nov 2010

Elementary Teachers' Assessment Beliefs And Practices, Sarah Calveric

Theses and Dissertations

Increased state and federal accountability measures have made the assessment of student performance one of the most critical responsibilities of classroom teachers; yet, inadequate opportunities for preservice and inservice training leave many teachers feeling ill-prepared for this task. Adding to the complexity of building teachers’ assessment literacy is the relationship between assessment beliefs and classroom assessment practices. This quantitative study utilizes a validated, online survey to examine how elementary teachers’ (n = 79) define their assessment beliefs (conceptions) and how these beliefs influence which assessment practices are valued within the classroom. Findings suggest that despite teachers’ limited exposure to assessment …

Marketing Via Friends: Strategic Diffusion Of Information In Social Networks With Homophily, Roman Chuhay Nov 2010

Marketing Via Friends: Strategic Diffusion Of Information In Social Networks With Homophily, Roman Chuhay

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The paper studies the impact of homophily on the optimal strategies of a monopolist, whose marketing campaign of new product relies on a word of mouth communication. Homophily is a tendency of people to interact more with those who are similar to them. In the model there are two types of consumers embedded into a social network, which differ in friendship preferences and desirable design of product. Consumers can learn about the product directly from an advertisement or from their neighbors. The monopolist chooses the product design and price to influence a pattern of communication among consumers. We find a …

The Repeated Prisoner’S Dilemma In A Network, Markus Kinateder Nov 2010

The Repeated Prisoner’S Dilemma In A Network, Markus Kinateder

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Imperfect private monitoring in an infinitely repeated discounted Prisoner’s Dilemma played on a communication network is studied. Players observe their direct neighbors’ behavior only, but communicate strategically the repeated game’s history throughout the network. The delay in receiving this information requires the players to be more patient to sustain the same level of cooperation as in a complete network, although a Folk Theorem obtains when the players are patient enough. All equilibria under exogenously imposed truth-telling extend to strategic communication, and additional ones arise due to richer communication. There are equilibria in which a player lies. The flow of information …
