An Exploration Of The Knowledge And Attitudes Towards Breastfeeding Among A Sample Of Chinese Mothers In Ireland, Qianling Zhou, Katherine Younger, John Kearney

Articles

Background: Psychological factors are important in influencing breastfeeding practices. This retrospective study explored knowledge and attitudes related to breastfeeding of Chinese mothers living in Ireland. Methods: A cross-sectional self-administrated survey written in Chinese was distributed to a convenience sample of 322 immigrant Chinese mothers mainly via Chinese supermarkets and Chinese language schools in Dublin, with the involvement of the snowball method to increase sample size. Maternal breastfeeding knowledge and attitudes were described, their associations with socio-demographic variables were explored by Chi-square analysis, and their independent associations with breastfeeding behaviours were estimated by binary logistic regression analyses. Results: In spite of …

The Problem Of The Commons: Still Unsettled After 100 Years, Robert Stavins Nov 2010

The Problem Of The Commons: Still Unsettled After 100 Years, Robert Stavins

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The problem of the commons is more important to our lives and thus more central to economics than a century ago when Katharine Coman led off the first issue of the American Economic Review. As the U.S. and other economies have grown, the carrying-capacity of the planet - in regard to natural resources and environmental quality — has become a greater concern, particularly for common-property and open-access resources. The focus of this article is on some important, unsettled problems of the commons. Within the realm of natural resources, there are special challenges associated with renewable resources, which are frequently characterized …

The European Emission Trading Scheme And Renewable Energy Policies: Credible Targets For Incredible Results?, Simone Borghesi Nov 2010

The European Emission Trading Scheme And Renewable Energy Policies: Credible Targets For Incredible Results?, Simone Borghesi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper discusses the merits and limits of the recent European energy policy aimed at reducing carbon emissions, devoting particular attention to the European Trading System of carbon permits and to the measures that the European Union has adopted to promote renewable energy sources. From the comparison of past goals and present results, it is argued that more credible targets for carbon emission reductions and renewable shares would probably help the transition towards an alternative energy system and the necessary reduction of greenhouse gases.

Repeated Cheap-Talk Games Of Common Interest Between A Decision-Maker And An Expert Of Unknown Statistical Bias, Irene Valsecchi Nov 2010

Repeated Cheap-Talk Games Of Common Interest Between A Decision-Maker And An Expert Of Unknown Statistical Bias, Irene Valsecchi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Two agents are engaged in a joint activity that yields a common perperiod payoff at two rounds of play. The expert announces the probability that the current state of the world is low, instead of high, at each stage. Having received the report of the expert, the decision-maker takes action at every period according to his posterior beliefs. At the end of each round of play, the true current state is verifiable. The distinctive assumption of the paper is that the decision-maker makes a subjective appraisal of the expert’s reliability: he considers the expert’s true forecasts as the outcomes of …

Beyond Copenhagen: A Realistic Climate Policy In A Fragmented World, Carlo Carraro, Emanuele Massetti Nov 2010

Beyond Copenhagen: A Realistic Climate Policy In A Fragmented World, Carlo Carraro, Emanuele Massetti

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We propose a realistic approach to climate policy based on the Copenhagen Agreement to reduce Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) emissions. We assess by how much the non-binding, although official, commitments to reduce emissions made in Copenhagen will affect the level of world GHGs emissions in 2020. Our estimates are based on official communications to the UNFCCC, on historic data and on the Business-as-Usual scenario of the WITCH model. We are not interested in estimating the gap between the expected level of emissions and what would be needed to achieve the 2°C target. Nor do we attempt to calculate the 2100 temperature …

Immigration, Offshoring And American Jobs, Gianmarco I.P. Ottaviano, Giovanni Peri, Greg C. Wright Nov 2010

Immigration, Offshoring And American Jobs, Gianmarco I.P. Ottaviano, Giovanni Peri, Greg C. Wright

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

How many "American jobs" have U.S.-born workers lost due to immigration and offshoring? Or, alternatively, is it possible that immigration and offshoring, by promoting cost-savings and enhanced efficiency in firms, have spurred the creation of jobs for U.S. natives? We consider a multi-sector version of the Grossman and Rossi-Hansberg (2008) model with a continuum of tasks in each sector and we augment it to include immigrants with heterogeneous productivity in tasks. We use this model to jointly analyze the impact of a reduction in the costs of offshoring and of the costs of immigrating to the U.S. The model predicts …
