Mothers Against Democracy: Hebe De Bonafini's Rhetorical Strategies Of Resistance, 1988-2003, Shirley J. Oakley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The Madres de Plaza de Mayo was once a small group of grieving mothers in Buenos Aires who sought solace during a dictatorship that began in 1976. As their resistance developed, they grew into a social and political organization whose purpose is to keep the memory of their children alive and to generate justice in Argentina and worldwide. Their leader, Hebe de Bonafini, is atypical because there was no oratorical tradition for her to follow: she created one. Throughout the thirty-four years of the mothers' movement's existence, Bonafini's rhetoric has changed and has taken a new shape. The permanent disappearance …

ELT was utilized in an effort to understand the learning that took place during the caregiving experiences, and CIT was used to better understand the critical incidents that led the caregivers to seek nursing home placement. A sample of twelve former informal dementia caregivers between the ages of fifty-seven and eighty-seven was drawn from the metropolitan Richmond, Virginia area. In-depth interviews were …

Humphry Davy: Science, Authorship, And The Changing Romantic, Marianne Lind Baker Nov 2010

Humphry Davy: Science, Authorship, And The Changing Romantic, Marianne Lind Baker

Theses and Dissertations

In the mid to late 1700s, men of letters became more and more interested in the natural world. From studies in astronomy to biology, chemistry, and medicine, these "philosophers" pioneered what would become our current scientific categories. While the significance of their contributions to these fields has been widely appreciated historically, the interconnection between these men and their literary counterparts has not. A study of the "Romantic man of science" reveals how much that figure has in common with the traditional "Romantic" literary figure embodied by poets like William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. This thesis interrogates connections between Romantic …

Detecting Cartels: Price Rigidity And The Application Of The Icss Algorithm, Ping-Ying Cheng Nov 2010

Detecting Cartels: Price Rigidity And The Application Of The Icss Algorithm, Ping-Ying Cheng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This paper proposes that the Iterative Cumulative Sums of Squares (ICSS) Algorithm can be applied to help better detect periods of collusive behavior in markets by analyzing changes in the variance of product prices over time. Price rigidity is a common characteristic of oligopolies and has been theoretically proven in many studies. The kinked-demand-curve explains that firms would prefer to stay at the agreed upon monopoly price rather than cutting prices to earn more market share during a single period. An infinitely repeated Bertrand game model developed by Athey, Bagwell, and Sanchirico (2004) claims that if the firms are sufficiently …

Testing Coupling Relationships In Object-Oriented Programs, Roger Alexander, Jeff Offutt, Andreas Stefik Nov 2010

Testing Coupling Relationships In Object-Oriented Programs, Roger Alexander, Jeff Offutt, Andreas Stefik

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

As we move toward developing object‐oriented (OO) programs, the complexity traditionally found in functions and procedures is moving to the connections among components. Different faults occur when components are integrated to form higher‐level structures that aggregate the behavior and state. Consequently, we need to place more effort on testing the connections among components. Although OO technologies provide abstraction mechanisms for building components that can then be integrated to form applications, it also adds new compositional relations that can contain faults. This paper describes techniques for analyzing and testing the polymorphic relationships that occur in OO software. The techniques adapt traditional …

Electrochemical Detection For The Corrosion Of Reinforcing Steel In Concrete During Immersion And Drying Cycles, Bing-Li Jia, Fa-He Cao, An-Na Chen, Jian-Qing Zhang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The corrosion behavior of reinforcing steel in concrete under dry-wet cycle condition has been studied by electrochemical noise(EN) compared with the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS),SEM micrographs and EDS.The statistical method has been employed to analyze the EN data of reinforcing steel in concrete, which revealed three different corrosion stages of reinforcing steel in concrete, including the dissolution of the passive film, the active corrosion and the cumulation of corrosion product. The wavelet transform has also been employed, which indicated that steel in concrete with pH 1 is associated with uniform corrosion, while steel in concrete with pH 3 and pH 7 are associated with localized corrosion, such as …

The Asher And Dane School Districts' Mentoring Models: The Relationship Between Mentoring And Retention Of Beginning Teachers, Po N. Chou

Theses and Dissertations

Diverse mentoring models have been implemented by educational organizations to address teacher retention, but debate continues over which mentoring model is most beneficial. Two school districts in Utah, USA, hereafter referred to as the Asher and Dane (pseudonyms) School Districts, provide distinct approaches to mentoring. Both the Asher and Dane School District have used veteran teachers with full-time teaching loads to mentor beginning teachers. The Dane School District, however, has recently implemented a unique and distinct mentoring model in addition to in-school mentors. In this model, full-time released teacher "coaches" with specialized mentoring responsibilities are assigned by the district to …

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Background: More than 450 newborns die every hour worldwide, before they reach the age of four weeks (neonatal period) and over 500,000 women die from complications related to childbirth. The major direct causes of neonatal death are infections (36%), Prematurity (28%) and Asphyxia (23%). Pakistan has one of the highest perinatal and neonatal mortality rates in the region and contributes significantly to global neonatal mortality. The high mortality rates are partially attributable to scarcity of trained skilled birth attendants and paucity of resources. Empowerment of health care providers with adequate knowledge and skills can serve as instrument of change. Methods: …

Biological Rationale For The Use Of Dna Methyltransferase Inhibitors As New Strategy For Modulation Of Tumor Response To Chemotherapy And Radiation., Giovanni L Gravina, Claudio Festuccia, Francesco Marampon, Vladimir M Popov, Richard G Pestell, Bianca M Zani, Vincenzo Tombolini

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

Epigenetic modifications play a key role in the patho-physiology of many tumors and the current use of agents targeting epigenetic changes has become a topic of intense interest in cancer research. DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) inhibitors represent a promising class of epigenetic modulators. Research performed yielded promising anti-tumorigenic activity for these agents in vitro and in vivo against a variety of hematologic and solid tumors. These epigenetic modulators cause cell cycle and growth arrest, differentiation and apoptosis. Rationale for combining these agents with cytotoxic therapy or radiation is straightforward since the use of DNMT inhibitor offers greatly improved access for cytotoxic …
