For the purposes of this research, the "design science" discipline of Information Systems will structure the overall methodology and framework for results. By leveraging the design science framework, this study will dissect and analyze various parts of a hospital's network, to uncover substandard practices and problematic weaknesses that commonly result in an overall decrease in the quality of healthcare provided to patients, and negatively affect business operations of hospitals and healthcare facilities. For the purposes of this research the chosen hospital will be categorized as Mid-Western Hospital. This thesis will investigate, in a real world healthcare organization, fault management technologies …

Power Series For Waves In Micro-Resonator Arrays, Stephen P. Shipman
Power Series For Waves In Micro-Resonator Arrays, Stephen P. Shipman
Faculty Publications
We obtain convergent power-series representations for Bloch waves and their complex dispersion relation in an infinite periodic array of micro-resonators, which exhibits artificial bulk magnetism. The small parameter η of expansion is the ratio of period to wavelength, and the high conductivity is inversely proportional to η. The coefficient fields are solutions to an infinite sequence of period-cell problems.1. © 2010 IEEE.

Significant interest exists in establishing synergistic research in bioinformatics, systems biology and intelligent computing. Supported by the United States National Science Foundation (NSF), International Society of Intelligent Biological Medicine (http://www.ISIBM.org), International Journal of Computational Biology and Drug Design (IJCBDD) and International Journal of Functional Informatics and Personalized Medicine, the ISIBM International Joint Conferences on Bioinformatics, Systems Biology and Intelligent Computing (ISIBM IJCBS 2009) attracted more than 300 papers and 400 researchers and medical doctors world-wide. It was the only inter/multidisciplinary conference aimed to promote synergistic research and education in bioinformatics, systems biology and intelligent computing. The conference committee …
Conditions Associated With Clostridium Sporogenes Growth As A Surrogate For Clostridium Botulinum In Non-Thermally Processed Canned Butter, Reed H. Taylor
Conditions Associated With Clostridium Sporogenes Growth As A Surrogate For Clostridium Botulinum In Non-Thermally Processed Canned Butter, Reed H. Taylor
Theses and Dissertations
Shelf-stable canned butter is currently available in retail stores, and many home-preservationists promote home-canning of butter. Non-cultured butter is a low-acid canned food, which would presumably require thermal processing. The lack of a thermal process step in canned butter products raises questions of potential safety, because they are hermetically sealed and generally exhibit anaerobic growth conditions, which are optimal for Clostridium botulinum growth. Without thermal processing, low-acid canned foods (LACF) must have inhibitory factors present to prevent C. botulinum growth. Some potential intrinsic inhibitory factors, or "hurdles", within butter include: reduced water activity (aw), acidity (pH) in cultured products, elevated …

Throwing The Baby Out With The Bathwater: When Can We Trust Self Report With The Smi Inpatient Population?, Jeffrey A. Lee
Theses and Dissertations
Reliability of self-report outcome assessment is often called into question with the severely mentally ill population. In the context of inpatient care, demand characteristics may further complicate self-report measures. Although clinician-completed outcome measures, such as the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale-Expanded Version (BPRS-E), have become industry standard with this population, self-report assessment may be useful under certain conditions. This study sought to explore the relationship between a clinician-completed, the BPRS-E, and a self-completed measure, the SOQ, within the SMI inpatient population. A total of 357 adult participants with a minimum of three assessment iterations were analyzed. The results of the analysis …
Perceptions Of Teachers Regarding The Importance And Existence Of Researched-Based Program Characteristics In Alternative High Schools And Teacher’S Perceptions Of Efficacy In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Robert Lowerre
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to determine teachers’ perceptions of the degree to which research-based characteristics exist in alternative high schools and programs in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the importance of these characteristics to effective education. In addition, this research investigated whether or not these perceptions were related to the teachers’ perception of efficacy. These seven characteristics were (a) clearly identified enrollment criteria, (b) low ratio of student to teachers, (c) one-to-one interactions between staff and students, (d) social skills instruction, (e) effective academic instruction, (f) parental involvement and parental support programs, and (g) specific training for teachers …

On Line: The Pledging Experiences Of Members Of Black Greek-Lettered Organizations From 1970 To 1990, Antonio Dewan Jenkins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In 1990, the leadership of the Black Greek-Lettered organizations that comprise the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) agreed to ban pledging as the official member entry process for new members. For 20 years (1990-2010), each organization has developed and used a membership intake process (MIP) to replace pledging in order to prevent hazing and injury to prospective members. Studies on membership entry into these organizations have focused mainly on fraternities during the MIP era (1990-2010) and the persistence of hazing during their process. This study explored the experiences of men and women who joined BGLOs prior to the 1990 ban on …
