Uncertainty Monitoring In Sprague-Dawley Rats (Rattus Norvegicus), Leslie Anne Angel Jan 2010

Uncertainty Monitoring In Sprague-Dawley Rats (Rattus Norvegicus), Leslie Anne Angel

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Comparative psychologists have explored the metacognitive capabilities of rhesus monkeys, a capuchin monkey, an orangutan, a dolphin, pigeons, and rats. Previous research with rats has demonstrated inconsistent results (Foote & Crystal, 2007; Smith & Schull, 1989). In the current study, two Sprague-Dawley rats were tested in a tone-length discrimination task in which they were prompted to press one of two levers indicating "short" or "long" depending on the duration of a tone. They also had the option to opt out of some trials. If the subjects knew when they did not know the answer to the task, they were expected …

Single-Case Designs And Qualitative Methods: Applying A Mixed Methods Research Perspective, John H. Hitchcock, Bonnie K. Nastasi, Meredith Summerville Jan 2010

Single-Case Designs And Qualitative Methods: Applying A Mixed Methods Research Perspective, John H. Hitchcock, Bonnie K. Nastasi, Meredith Summerville

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The purpose of this conceptual paper is to describe a design that mixes single-case (sometimes referred to as single-subject) and qualitative methods, hereafter referred to as a single-case mixed methods design (SCD-MM). Minimal attention has been given to the topic of applying qualitative methods to SCD work in the literature. These two approaches potentially can be integrated using a mixed methods perspective to yield a powerful approach for understanding localized causality and describing intervention application. The SCD-MM also can be used within the context of action research if the purpose of such work is to investigate a causal question.

American Studies À La Française: An Introduction To Doctoral Dissertations In American Studies 1971-2005 For American Students, Jean-Pierre Herubel, Anne L. Buchanan

Libraries Faculty and Staff Creative Materials

As globalization continues to influence the world of information and undergraduate learning, subjects pertaining to the United States as a country and complex culture emerge as interests globally, so much so that American Studies programs in other countries offer tantalizing opportunities to gain other perspectives and knowledge about the United States as a distinctively American experience. As American students study in American Studies programs, they may require or find useful, other approaches to American subjects in their research. A particularly interesting possibility for students and scholars is to avail themselves of French research, specifically doctoral dissertations in American studies. Since …

Composition Under Review: A Genre Analysis Of Book Reviews In Composition, 1939-2007, Sandra Wald Valensky Jan 2010

Composition Under Review: A Genre Analysis Of Book Reviews In Composition, 1939-2007, Sandra Wald Valensky

Wayne State University Dissertations

Although reviews have been a part of two flagship composition journals, College English and College Composition and Communication throughout their publication histories, little attention has been shown to them in any full length research studies. This dissertation study provides a historical genre analysis of reviews to illustrate the role of reviews in reflecting and contributing to composition's struggle for full disciplinary status.

Methodologically, this mixed methods study uses historical analysis, genre analysis, and an interview study to investigate reviews and their functions in the field of composition. A corpus of 90 reviews, 45 from each journal, was analyzed from 1939 …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cyberanthropology or the anthropology of cyber space/culture is an emerging subfield of cultural anthropology that deals with the varied integration of human beings and technology. This specialized area of study focuses on topics ranging from new technologies used in ethnographic research to information and communication technologies utilized by specific societal groups. Communication technology encompasses the World Wide Web, email, and online multiperson interactive spaces such as chatrooms and video games. In this work, I ethnographically investigate human social interactions in the online gaming realm of World of Warcraft. On the whole, the expanding numbers of virtual communities in existence today …

Thinking Globally, Writing Locally: Re-Visioning Critical And Service Learning Pedagogies With Globalization Theory, Cara Lindsey Kozma Jan 2010

Thinking Globally, Writing Locally: Re-Visioning Critical And Service Learning Pedagogies With Globalization Theory, Cara Lindsey Kozma

Wayne State University Dissertations

Based on a theoretically informed qualitative study, my dissertation looks at critical and service learning pedagogies, focusing on the numerous critiques that have arisen within contemporary composition scholarship. Critical pedagogy has recently come under scrutiny on the grounds that it opposes students' pragmatic views and career concerns, effects student resistance in the classroom, devalues students' personal experiences, and stigmatizes white students (particularly white males). Within service learning, scholars point to numerous problems as well: It can create a false hierarchy between students and community partners by evoking an ideology of "service" and an us/them mentality; it may not be truly …

A Study Of African American Student Retention And Persistence At Los Angeles City College In Extended Opportunity Program And Services (Eops), Kalynda Webber Mclean Jan 2010

A Study Of African American Student Retention And Persistence At Los Angeles City College In Extended Opportunity Program And Services (Eops), Kalynda Webber Mclean

Theses and Dissertations

As the community college student population becomes more diverse, the traditional student support program activities are limited in their effectiveness (Crawford, 1999). Rodriguez (1992) reports that although community colleges are often the first entry point into higher education for African American students, there does not seem to be equal success in the retention and persistence of this group. As officials in higher education seek to assess the success or failure of the community college in serving its diverse population, many questions may arise concerning the success of special programs in retaining minority students. Some researchers have wondered whether these special …

Post-Course Environmental Behavior Change Of Wild Rockies Field Institute Participants, Theodore Rosenberger Morrison Jan 2010

Post-Course Environmental Behavior Change Of Wild Rockies Field Institute Participants, Theodore Rosenberger Morrison

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In light of the environmental crisis facing the world, the need for citizens to behave in an environmentally responsible manner is critical to finding lasting solutions. After conducting and analyzing 20 in-depth interviews with alumni of the Wild Rockies Field Institute (WRFI), this study found that despite elevated pre-course levels of environmentally responsible behavior most participants reported an increased level of post course environmental behavior change. Post-course impacts ranged from a change of, or further investment in academic and career goals, lifestyle choices, empowerment, ethical development and political activity. Participants reported these outcomes were influenced by a variety of course …

Stories In Mexico And The United States About The Border: The Rhetoric And The Realities, Gloria Valencia-Weber, Antoinette Sedillo Lopez

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

Our discussion will: 1) examine the concept of using word choices and metaphors as devices in storytelling to frame political, economic and social issues, which are meant to evoke certain emotional responses among specific audiences in the immigration debates; 2) describe the legal history of the border as a legal and social construct as background for the stories that are told about immigration; 3) demonstrate with examples of stories published in Mexico and the U.S. that portray how some stories about the border are being framed in the U.S. and in Mexico by identifying word choices, metaphors, audience, social and/or …

The Value Of Fictional Worlds (Or Why 'The Lord Of The Rings' Is Worth Reading), James Harold Jan 2010

The Value Of Fictional Worlds (Or Why 'The Lord Of The Rings' Is Worth Reading), James Harold

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Some works of fiction are widely held by critics to have little value, yet these works are not only popular but also widely admired in ways that are not always appreciated. In this paper I make use of Kendall Walton’s account of fictional worlds to argue that fictional worlds can and often do have value, including aesthetic value, that is independent of the works that create them. In the process, I critique Walton’s notion of fictional worlds and offer a defense of the study and appreciation of fictional worlds, as distinguished from the works of fiction with which they are …

Penetrating The Silence In Sierra Leone: A Blueprint For The Eradication Of Female Genital Mutilation, Chi Adanna Mgbako, Meghna Saxena, Anna Cave, Nasim Farjad, Helen Shin

Faculty Scholarship

The African grassroots movement to eradicate female genital mutilation (also known as “female genital cutting” and “female circumcision,” hereinafter “FGM”) is widespread. While many African countries and grassroots organizations have made great strides in their efforts to eliminate FGM, Sierra Leone lags behind. In Sierra Leone, FGM is practiced within the bondo secret society, an ancient, all-female commune located in West Africa and also known as the sande. The bondo society’s traditional role was to direct girls’ rites of passage into adulthood. In order to become a member of the bondo, a girl or woman must undergo various rituals, the …

“All The Men Here Have The Peter Pan Syndrome— They Don’T Want To Grow Up”: Navajo Adolescent Mothers’ Intimate Partner Relationships—A 15-Year Perspective, Rochelle L. Dalla, Alexandria M. Marchetti, Elizabeth (Beth) A. Sechrest, Jennifer L. White Jan 2010

White

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

In 1992 and 1995, data were collected from 29 Navajo Native American adolescent mothers. In 2007 and 2008, data were collected from 21 of the original 29 (72%). Guided by feminist family theory, this investigation sought to (a) examine Navajo adolescent mothers’ intimate partner relationships during the transition to parenthood, (b) identify themes in the young mothers’ intimate partnerships across time, and (c) assess participants’ psychosocial well-being in adulthood. Four themes emerged in the women’s long-term intimate relationships: limited support, substance abuse, infidelity, and intimate partner violence. Implications of the findings and suggestions for future research are discussed.

The Sea Otter Islands: Geopolitics and Environment in the East Asian Fur Trade by Richard Ravalli

The origins of the sea otter trade can be traced to inter-Asian fur markets that developed centuries prior to the well-chronicled journeys of Vitus Bering and James Cook in the North Pacific. Japanese merchants and Ainu hunters traded for otter pelts as part of a larger system of exchanges in the Western Pacific. Russian entry to the trade by the early eighteenth century intensified territorial disputes in the Kuril Islands. A series of Russo-Japanese showdowns in the region helped forge an international borderland …

Bonobos, Chimpanzees, Gorillas, And Orang Utans Use Feature And Spatial Cues In Two Spatial Memory Tasks, Patricia Kanngiesser, Josep Call Jan 2010

Bonobos, Chimpanzees, Gorillas, And Orang Utans Use Feature And Spatial Cues In Two Spatial Memory Tasks, Patricia Kanngiesser, Josep Call

School of Psychology

Animals commonly use feature and spatial strategies when remembering places of interest such as food sources or hiding places. We conducted three experiments with great apes to investigate strategy preferences and factors that may shape them. In the first experiment, we trained 17 apes to remember 12 different food locations on the floor of their sleeping room. The 12 food locations were associated with one feature cue, so that feature and spatial cues were confounded. In a single test session, we brought the cues into conflict and found that apes, irrespective of species, showed a preference for a feature strategy. …

No Longer, But Not Yet: Tweens And The Mediating Of Liminal Selves Through Metaconsumption, Kevina Cody, Katrina Lawlor, Pauline Mcclaren

Articles

Using the anthropological theory of liminality as a lens of analysis, the following paper outlines specific elements of a research project exploring the consumer culture of a liminal group – tweens. The lived experience of a tween is explored using a multi-method approach incorporating personal diaries, in-depth interviews and accompanied shopping trips. Outcomes of one aspect of this longitudinal research project – the theory of metaconsumption - are presented, suggesting an important divergent theoretical path from the ‘effects’ - dominated consumer socialization approach to researching young people and their relationships with consumption. We conclude that those in a shadowed reality, …

Flirting As A Liminal Experience: A Dialogue Between A Philosophical-Phenomenological Understanding Of Liminality And An Empirical-Existential Study Of Flirting, Rune Lassen Mølbak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation I bring out concealed aspects of the lived experience of flirting by studying it neither as a subjective act nor as an objective behavior, but as a liminal event. Liminality is an anthropological concept that designates a realm of experience that falls outside identity and mutually exclusive binaries. I argue that flirting is a liminal experience in so far as it is an experience that both constitutes me through the other and is constituted by me as a way of relating to the other. What is primary is thus not self or other, but the relation or …

Funerary Rituals, Aeschylus’ Eumenides And Sophocles’ Antigone, Katerina Zacharia

Classics and Archaeology Faculty Works

The legislation of Dracon (c. 620 B.C.) and Solon (early sixth century) in Athens is the beginning of the long process by which the family or household, the oikos, was restrained and the polis (city-state) encroached on some of its former functions. The first stage was the restriction of the right to blood-vengeance. This is the background to the family revenge depicted in the Oresteia of Aeschylus. An analysis of the funerary legislation in Athens as transmitted by Plutarch, Demosthenes, and Cicero, points to an attempt by the state to curb excessive ostentation by the elite. I examine epigraphic …

A Comparison Of Tooth Wear And Breakage In Rancho La Brea Sabertooth Cats And Dire Wolves Across Time, Wendy J. Binder Jan 2010

A Comparison Of Tooth Wear And Breakage In Rancho La Brea Sabertooth Cats And Dire Wolves Across Time, Wendy J. Binder

Biology Faculty Works

The carnivores preserved in the late Pleistocene Rancho La Brea tar seep deposits display a remarkably high incidence of teeth broken in life as compared with modern species. In a previous study examining tooth breakage, tooth wear and individual age of Canis dirus over different periods in time, we found that Pit 13 C. dirus (about 15,000 years before present [ybp]) exhibited heavier tooth wear and fractured their teeth about three times more often than those of the younger Pit 61/67 (about 12,000 ybp). No significant difference was found in the age structure of the population, suggesting this came from …
