Holding The High Ground: The Operational Calculus Of Torture And Coercive Interrogation, Joseph L. Falvey Jr., Brian D. Eck Jan 2010

Holding The High Ground: The Operational Calculus Of Torture And Coercive Interrogation, Joseph L. Falvey Jr., Brian D. Eck

Campbell Law Review

In Part I of this Article, we first consider some of the strengths and weaknesses of the partially adequate objections. In Part II, we explore torture in light of the biological distinction between pain and suffering and consider the implications of that distinction for our understanding of free will and the fighting spirit. Finally, in Part III, we suggest a more fundamental view of torture that navigates between the Scylla of naive moralizing and the Charybdis of ticking time-bombs. We propose that the debate should focus on torture's effect on our country's moral certainty, on the fighting spirit of our …

The Eminence Of Imminence And The Myopia Of Markets, 9 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 674 (2010), Teneille R. Brown

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

This article questions the privileging of disaster, or imminent threat, over more distant threats to public health. In many cases, this privileging makes sense as we do not have time to evaluate the threat under traditional frameworks. But in some cases, we privilege disaster in ways that may be ethically and legally unsound. Here, I am interested in a particular type of public health threat—the negative consequences that stem from climate change. In this article, I view the climate change discussion through the lens of distributive justice. I analyze the ethical as well as legal arguments in support of encouraging …

Improving Acne Vulgaris Knowledge In Adolescents: Computer-Based Tutorial Versus Handout, Ohenewaa Larbi Ahima

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

IMPROVING ACNE VULGARIS KNOWLEDGE IN ADOLESCENTS: COMPUTER-BASED TUTORIAL VERSUS HANDOUT Ohenewaa Larbi Ahima; James Dziura; Richard J. Antaya, Department of Dermatology, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. Given the choice, adolescents would most likely prefer a computer-based tutorial (CBT) on acne vulgaris rather than a handout with the same information. The aims of the study were to assess pre- and post-test preference of either a handout or CBT on acne among adolescents, and to assess adolescents knowledge of acne before and after the intervention. One hundred ten patients ages 13 to 17 participated in the study. All subjects …

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

This ethnobotanical survey was carried out to collect the information on the use of some antipyretic activity plants used by Manipuri community of Barak valley, Assam. A total of 26 nos. of antipyretic plant species belonging to 20 families and 23 genera have been recorded through structured questionnaires in consultations with the community practitioners. For curing fever the use of aboveground plant parts was higher (65.38%) than the underground plant parts (15.38%). Of the aboveground plant parts, leaf was used in the majority of cases (13 species), followed by whole plant part (5 species), fruit (1 species), bark (1 species), …

Finding Our Way(S): A Theoretical Model Of Performance Studies And Homeplace, Shauna M. Macdonald Jan 2010

Finding Our Way(S): A Theoretical Model Of Performance Studies And Homeplace, Shauna M. Macdonald

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Place, space, and homeplace have taken on increasing conceptual significance for performance studies practitioners. Despite a wealth of research, there are few theoretical models within the discipline to which researchers of homeplace can appeal for scholarly guidance. In this paper, I survey recent essays about home, place, and space within two major disciplinary journals to create such a model. Using my own experience with homeplace and performance as a frame, I outline four major orientations toward homeplace displayed within recent performance studies literature. Though my goal is far from exhaustive, I aim both to describe the variety of research projects …

The daily media is filled with images of catastrophic events which seem increasingly frequent and violent In parallel there are a large range of scientific studies debates in the policy arena, and a growing number of international institutions focused on disaster reduction. But a paradox remains that despite advances in technology, disasters continue to increase, affecting many individuals in rich as well as poor countries.

Deconstructing The Hopewell Interaction Sphere, Steven Sarich Jan 2010

Deconstructing The Hopewell Interaction Sphere, Steven Sarich

Nebraska Anthropologist

It is the intention of this paper to ponder the impetus behind the Hopewell Interaction Sphere and relate it back to the Hopewell society as a whole. I will present a number of models offered by other researchers and find a common theme that connects them all, namely ceremonialism. Socially valued items and ceremonialism are closely tied according to Katherine Spielmann and so through close examination I will find out how close they are. Also, more contemporary cross-cultural examples of ritual exchange will be presented to show its prevalence through time.

Paths To Zion: The Mormon Settlement At Wyoming, Ne, Sherri L. Sklenar

Nebraska Anthropologist

This preliminary study examined the cultural and logistical factors underlying the settlement of the historic town of nyoming, Nebraska. Located along the Mormon Trail, this site provides a new window for understanding the dynamics of nineteenth century u.s. emigrant trails. Utilizing a body of primary and secondary documents as well as cartographic source, the preliminary analysis revealed two integrated themes: (1) frontier logistics and expansion and (2) religious values and experiences. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, or Mormons, needed both a prosperous town to equip themselves for their journey to Salt Lake City and a smaller …

Indigenous Archaeology: Historical Interpretation From An Emic Perspective, Stephanie M. Kennedy Jan 2010

Indigenous Archaeology: Historical Interpretation From An Emic Perspective, Stephanie M. Kennedy

Nebraska Anthropologist

This inquiry explores indigenous archaeology as a form of resistance to dominant Western science. Literature was identified and analyzed pertaining to the success of indigenous archaeology in the United States, British Columbia, and Australia. It is argued that a more inclusive archaeology is necessary, one that encourages partnerships with Indigenous groups in the interpretation of their own past. This study has implications for how we perceive Indigenous peoples from an archaeological perspective.

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Despite the recent rapid growth in genome-wide data, much of human variation remains entirely unexplained. A significant challenge in the pursuit of the genetic basis for variation in common human traits is the efficient, coordinated collection of genotype and phenotype data. We have developed a novel research framework that facilitates the parallel study of a wide assortment of traits within a single cohort. The approach takes advantage of the interactivity of the Web both to gather data and to present genetic information to research participants, while taking care to correct for the population structure inherent to this study design. Here …

Digital Human Models Of People With Disabilities, Ron Hamameh Jan 2010

Digital Human Models Of People With Disabilities, Ron Hamameh

Wayne State University Theses

The current state-of-the-art in Digital Human Modeling (DHM) allows for full simulation and analysis of any task a person is required to perform at home, at work, in the military, in space, in sports, etc. The problem is that the software is missing a very important population: people with physical disabilities. What modifications and enhancements must be made to existing, commercially available DHM software to include this population?

by

AHMAD E. ABOSHAIQAH

May 2010

Advisor: Dr. Stephen J. Cavanagh

Major: Nursing

Degree: Doctor of Philosophy

Patient safety (the avoidance and prevention of patient injuries or adverse events resulting from the processes of health care delivery) has become a major academic and public concern in healthcare. In order to promote and sustain a culture of safety in a healthcare organization, healthcare professionals stress the need to understand both individual and system contributions to error events. However, in Saudi Arabia, little is known about nurses' …
