Status And Prospects For The Wisconsin Dairy Goat Sector, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith
Status And Prospects For The Wisconsin Dairy Goat Sector, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
The Wisconsin dairy goat industry is a diverse, vibrant and robust sector that has grown rapidly over the last decade. Goat milk output has increased several-fold in the last ten years, and retail markets for goat cheese appear to be increasing at double-digit annual rates. The most recent data shows just over 200 licensed farms in Wisconsin in 2009. According to 2006 numbers, Wisconsin dairy goat farms were milking an average of 118 does that produced 1,416 lbs. On average, Wisconsin dairy goat farms were both larger and more productive on a per animal basis than farms in any other …

Fairy Tale Films, Pauline Greenhill, Sidney Eve Matrix
All USU Press Publications
In this, the first collection of essays to address the development of fairy tale film as a genre, Pauline Greenhill and Sidney Eve Matrix stress, "the mirror of fairy-tale film reflects not so much what its audience members actually are but how they see themselves and their potential to develop (or, likewise, to regress)." As Jack Zipes says further in the foreword, “Folk and fairy tales pervade our lives constantly through television soap operas and commercials, in comic books and cartoons, in school plays and storytelling performances, in our superstitions and prayers for miracles, and in our dreams and daydreams. …

The confluence of the Green and Colorado Rivers, now in Canyonlands National Park, near popular tourist destination Moab, still cannot be reached or viewed easily. Much of the surrounding region remained remote and rarely visited for decades after settlement of other parts of the West. The first U.S. government expedition to explore the canyon country and the Four Corners area was led by John Macomb of the army's topographical engineers. The soldiers and scientists followed in part the Old Spanish Trail, whose location they documented and verified. Seeking to find the confluence of the Colorado and the Green and looking …

Examining The Compatibility Between Forestry Incentive Programs In The Us And The Practice Of Sustainable Forest Management, Steven E. Daniels, Michael A. Kilgore, Michael G. Jacobsen, John L. Greene, Thomas J. Straka
Examining The Compatibility Between Forestry Incentive Programs In The Us And The Practice Of Sustainable Forest Management, Steven E. Daniels, Michael A. Kilgore, Michael G. Jacobsen, John L. Greene, Thomas J. Straka
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
This research explores the intersection between the various federal and state forestry incentive programs and the adoption of sustainable forestry practices on non-industrial private forest (NIPF) lands in the US. The qualitative research reported here draws upon a series of eight focus groups of NIPF landowners (two each in Minnesota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina). Despite minor regional variations, the dominant theme that emerged is that these landowners’ purchase and management decisions are motivated by the “trilogy” of forest continuity, benefit to the owner, and doing the “right thing.” This trilogy is quite consistent with notions of sustainable forestry, but …

Sources Of Fear In American Society: Representations In Short Horror Fiction, 1950s-Present, Mona Moin Syed
Sources Of Fear In American Society: Representations In Short Horror Fiction, 1950s-Present, Mona Moin Syed
Theses Digitization Project
This study examines the ways in which short American horror fiction has always revolved around fundamental fears of mortality, and how these fears have shifted across the span of three specific timeframes. Using a historical lens, this study also explores what the specific nature of mortality fears, as reflected in particular instances of short horror fiction, historically reveal about contemporaneous cultural attitudes toward end of life issues, loss, doubt, and grief. This study also traces how the perceptions of mortality have dynamically changed in American society from 1950s to present times in accordance with powerful historical events, varying cultural contexts, …

Pioneering Thuleinuit Subsistence: A Faunal Analysis Of Tiktalik (Nkri-3), John F. Moody
Pioneering Thuleinuit Subsistence: A Faunal Analysis Of Tiktalik (Nkri-3), John F. Moody
Digitized Theses
The Thule Inuit, ancestors of modern Inuit, were hunter-gatherers who colonized much of Arctic North America in the 13th century AD, but their migration remains poorly understood. Hunter-gatherer subsistence practices reflect their knowledge of local landscapes, knowledge colonizers would lack. This thesis attempts to assess the impact colonization had on Thule Inuit subsistence practices by examining the faunal assemblage from House 5 at Tiktalik (NkRi-3), a pioneering Thule Inuit site on Amundsen Gulf, NWT. Ringed seals dominate the faunal assemblage, suggesting that the site’s occupants were subsisting almost entirely on this species. Detailed analyses of the Ringed seal bones showed …

Perceptions Of Vulnerability To Severe’ Weather In Pangnirtung, Nunavut, Jennifer A. Spinney
Perceptions Of Vulnerability To Severe’ Weather In Pangnirtung, Nunavut, Jennifer A. Spinney
Digitized Theses
In June of 2008, the community of Pangnirtung, Nunavut experienced a rainstorm that caused extensive geological and structural damage. The local government characterized the event as 'severe’, however several residents pointed out the effects to the land and impacts to the community were at best exciting, and at worst, inconvenient. This thesis explores firstly, how the concept of ‘severe’ weather is constructed by social groups in Pangnirtung and secondly, how such constructions, along with Inuit worldview, experiential knowledge, governance, institutions, and access to resources, influence perceptions of vulnerability to significant weather events. The research shows the importance of cognitive processes …
Sowing The Seeds Of Democracy: Community Gardening In Parkdale, Toronto, Rebecca Ellis
Sowing The Seeds Of Democracy: Community Gardening In Parkdale, Toronto, Rebecca Ellis
Digitized Theses
Based on research conducted in the summer of 2009 at the HOPE garden in Toronto's Parkdale neighbourhood, I examine how community gardening builds participatory democracy in an urban neighbourhood undergoing gentrification. The HOPE gardeners overwhelmingly were drawn to the garden as a way to connect with other people in their neighbourhood. In a complex and heterogeneous neighbourhood these gardeners were brought together in community because of, not in spite of, their differences. The garden seems also to have been a catalyst for other community gatherings in the park. I argue that the garden helps to retain the heterogeneity and complexity …

Xperts And Novices: Differences In Their Use Of Mental Representation And Metacognition In Engineering Design, Raymond Anthony Dixon
Xperts And Novices: Differences In Their Use Of Mental Representation And Metacognition In Engineering Design, Raymond Anthony Dixon
Dissertations
Research shows that mental representation such as analogical reasoning is a fundamental cognitive tool for design problem solving (Daugherty & Mentzer, 2008; Hey, Lensey, Agogino, & Wood, 2008; Lewis, 2008). Not much is known, however, about the way students and professional engineers actively generate and change their mental representation when solving a engineering design problem. There are very few studies that show how different types of mental representations; such as metaphors, propositions, and analogies; interplay with higher order cognitive processes; such as planning, monitoring, and evaluation; as engineering designers navigate their problem and solution spaces. This empirical study investigated the …

ETD Archive
This dissertation, addresses intervention and phenomenological and participatory research methodology, through a lens of Gestalt Therapy Theory. The intervention, a wilderness-centered rites of passage, included experiential components of: (1) emersion in nature, (2) nature-based activities and challenges, (3) alone time in wilderness, (4) exposure to nature-based archetypes, elementals, and folklore, and (5) participation in community that supports connection through in ritual, ceremony, dialogue, and reflection. The participants included three early adolescent males and one adult male, a parent-participant. Data collection methods included participant observation, journal entries, photo documentation, photo elicited interviews, processing groups, and field notes. A multiple case narrative …

Lake Mývatn is an interior highland lake in northern Iceland that forms a unique ecosystem of international scientific importance and is surrounded by a landscape rich in archaeological and paleoenvironmental sites. A significant freshwater reservoir effect (FRE) has been identified in carbon from the lake at some Viking (about AD 870–1000) archaeological sites in the wider region (Mývatnssveit). Previous accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) measurements indicated this FRE was about 1500–1900 14C yr. Here, we present the results of a study using stable isotope and 14C measurements to quantify the Mývatn FRE for both the Viking and modern periods. …
"Something You Love And Something More Practical": Undergraduate Anthropology Education In The Neoliberal Era, Amy Goldmacher
"Something You Love And Something More Practical": Undergraduate Anthropology Education In The Neoliberal Era, Amy Goldmacher
Wayne State University Dissertations
This ethnographic case study attempts to understand how neoliberalism, which emphasizes education for employment, contradicts, complements, or coexists with the values of the liberal arts discipline of anthropology. Liberal arts education, the broader type of education that anthropology fits into, is called into question in this neoliberal era because its goal is not to train workers but to educate liberally. Historical data show a trend away from liberal arts degrees towards technical and professional degrees over the last thirty years (Fogg, Harrington, and Harrington 2004). Though the most important reason for earning a bachelor's degree cited among college freshman is …
The Right To Abandon, Lior Strahilevitz
The Right To Abandon, Lior Strahilevitz
Articles
The common law prohibits the abandonment of real property. Perhaps it is surprising, therefore, that the following are true: (1) the common law generally permits the abandonment of chattel property, (2) the common law promotes the transfer of real property via adverse possession, and (3) the civil law is widely believed to permit the abandonment of real property. Because the literature on abandonment is disappointingly sparse, these three peculiarities have escaped sustained scholarly analysis and criticism. This Article aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the law of abandonment. After engaging in such an analysis, this Article finds that the …

David Gress: From Plato To Nato Study Guide, Steven Alan Samson
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Besides being an essay on the concept of the West and the teaching of western civilization, this is a critique of what M. Stanton Evans called “the liberal history lesson” and what David Gress calls “the Grand Narrative.” The ironic title of the book (see page 1) may refer to a 1984 BBC radio series, later published as From Plato to NATO: Studies on Political Thought (1995), by the late British journalist and BBC announcer Brian Redhead. In preparing this study, Dr. Gress acknowledges the influence of Ernest Gellner’s The Conditions of Liberty, Paul Rahe’s Republics Ancient and Modern, and …
