Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

The Community-based Conservation Program (CBCP) encompasses the historical range of sagegrouse in Utah as identified in the 2002 (2009 revised) Strategic Management Plan for Sagegrouse (Figure 1). The plan, approved by the Utah Wildlife Board on 1 June 2002 (revised 2009), mandated the organization of local sage-grouse working groups (LWGs) to develop and implement sage-grouse conservation plans. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR) in cooperation with Utah State University Extension (USUEXT), private landowners, public and private natural resource, wildlife management, and conservation agencies and organizations have implemented the CBCP.

Empirical Bayes Analysis Of Sequencing-Based Transcriptional Profiling Without Replicates, Zhijin Wu, Bethany D. Jenkins, Tatiana A. Rynearson, Sonya T. Dyhrman, Mak A. Saito, Melissa Mercier, Leann P. Whitney Jan 2010

Empirical Bayes Analysis Of Sequencing-Based Transcriptional Profiling Without Replicates, Zhijin Wu, Bethany D. Jenkins, Tatiana A. Rynearson, Sonya T. Dyhrman, Mak A. Saito, Melissa Mercier, Leann P. Whitney

Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

Background:

Recent technological advancements have made high throughput sequencing an increasingly popular approach for transcriptome analysis. Advantages of sequencing-based transcriptional profiling over microarrays have been reported, including lower technical variability. However, advances in technology do not remove biological variation between replicates and this variation is often neglected in many analyses.

Results:

We propose an empirical Bayes method, titled Analysis of Sequence Counts (ASC), to detect differential expression based on sequencing technology. ASC borrows information across sequences to establish prior distribution of sample variation, so that biological variation can be accounted for even when replicates are not available. Compared to current …

Bloodsucking Copyrights, Ann Bartow Jan 2010

Bloodsucking Copyrights, Ann Bartow

Law Faculty Scholarship

Some bloodsuckers live off the life-sustaining fluids of involuntary hosts and leave behind diseases or venom. Fleas, ticks, bedbugs, and mosquitoes are all bloodsuckers that are best avoided. Others, like the leech, suck blood in ways that can be very helpful to a host, promoting blood flow and healing. Vampires are fictional, sentient bloodsuckers that have populated various entertainment genres for centuries. Copyrights, too, can suck blood metaphorically in productive and destructive ways, or simply suck, period, when they senselessly impede free-flowing veins of information. And though they are not (yet) immortal, copyrights last a very long time. In Copyright’s …

Intellectual Property, Medicine And Health: Current Debates, Stanley P. Kowalski Jan 2010

Intellectual Property, Medicine And Health: Current Debates, Stanley P. Kowalski

Law Faculty Scholarship

Johanna Gibson’ s “Intellectual Property, Medicine and Health: Current Debates” is an ambitious attempt to bridge the gap between IPR (largely patents) and the ethical, moral and philosophical issues which should influence global access to innovations in health. This intent is noteworthy and timely, as the complexities are important to address and there is an urgent need for clear-headed strategy. However, disappointingly, the book largely fails, as it is a rambling polemic that lacks focus, clarity and originality. Wading through the thicket of verbiage becomes so daunting that whatever message might be present is lost. The book also is flawed …

Potential Energy, Edward Bull Jan 2010

Potential Energy, Edward Bull

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Potential Energy. (Under the direction of Pat Rushin.) Potential Energy is a collection of sixteen short stories. They range from the fictional to the autofictional to the entirely non-fictional. In all of them, characters both real and imagined struggle to live and define themselves in a world that is outside their control. They cope with the inevitability of loss, dangers both internal and external, and the passing of their own greatness. Some of these characters become lost while others learn to embrace life on its own terms'to accept 'without hope or expectation.' More often, they are not lost or enlightened, …

The Dead Sea Scrolls Bible, Donald W. Parry Jan 2010

The Dead Sea Scrolls Bible, Donald W. Parry

Studies in the Bible and Antiquity

This paper examines various significant aspects of what may be designated the Dead Sea Scrolls Bible: its contents and description, scribal conventions, variant readings, use by modern English Bible translations, as well as parabiblical texts and their possible affiliation with the DSS Bible, canonicity, scriptural commentaries, tefillin, and mezuzot. An examination of the DSS biblical texts, which date to nearly a thousand years earlier than previously known texts of the Hebrew Bible, demonstrates a high degree of accuracy in the transmission of our Bible texts. Most variants offer only minor corrections to our biblical texts. Thus the scribe's professionalism overall …

The objective of the Endangered Species Act is to "recover" imperiled species and thus to render the Act's conservation tools unnecessary To achieve this goal, the drafters of the Act crafted a linear process that begins with an assessment of the threats facing the species and moves through the elimination of those threats to the recovery and delisting of the species. It has become increasingly apparent over the past decade that few species fit this model- most species face threats-altered habitats and competition with invasive species-that cannot be eliminated. These species are "conservation reliant" because they will require ongoing conservation …

Principal Component Analysis And Biochemical Characterization Of Protein And Starch Reveal Primary Targets For Improving Sorghum Grain, Joshua H. Wong, D. B. Marx, Jeff D. Wilson, Bob B. Buchanan, Peggy G. Lemaux, Jeffrey F. Pedersen

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Limited progress has been made on genetic improvement of the digestibility of sorghum grain because of variability among different varieties. In this study, we applied multiple techniques to assess digestibility of grain from 18 sorghum lines to identify major components responsible for variability. We also identified storage proteins and enzymes as potential targets for genetic modification to improve digestibility. Results from principal component analysis revealed that content of amylose and total starch, together with protein digestibility (PD), accounted for 94% of variation in digestibility. Control of amylose content is understood and manageable. Up-regulation of genes associated with starch accumulation is …

Japanese Demon Lore, Noriko T. Reider Jan 2010

Japanese Demon Lore, Noriko T. Reider

All USU Press Publications

Oni, ubiquitous supernatural figures in Japanese literature, lore, art, and religion, usually appear as demons or ogres. Characteristically threatening, monstrous creatures with ugly features and fearful habits, including cannibalism, they also can be harbingers of prosperity, beautiful and sexual, and especially in modern contexts, even cute and lovable. There has been much ambiguity in their character and identity over their long history. Usually male, their female manifestations convey distinctivly gendered social and cultural meanings.

Oni appear frequently in various arts and media, from Noh theater and picture scrolls to modern fiction and political propaganda, They remain common figures in popular …

Pretreatment And Fractionation Of Biomass For Biological Production Of Transportation Fuels And Value Added Chemicals, Samuel Asomaning Agyemang Jan 2010

Pretreatment And Fractionation Of Biomass For Biological Production Of Transportation Fuels And Value Added Chemicals, Samuel Asomaning Agyemang

Theses

Lignocellulosic biomass is an abundant renewable material from hardwood, softwood, grasses and agricultural residues for ethanol production. Pretreatment of lignocellulosic materials has been a main technical challenge to a cellulosic ethanol production process. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate four pretreatment methods and conduct comparative analyses among pretreatment methods, chemicals used and biomass species to determine the best process in terms of glucan to ethanol conversion efficiencies. The separation of hemicellulose fractions to be used as precursors for the production of high value chemicals after pretreatment of biomass samples is also investigated. Pretreatment methods including Accelerated Solvent Extraction …

Tatian, Kent Yinger Jan 2010

Tatian, Kent Yinger

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Best known for his harmony of the four gospels (Diatessaron), Tatian is usually remembered in the Western Church (but not in all portions of the Eastern Church) as a Christian apologist turned heretic. He was born in Assyria (or Syria) ca. 120 CE and came to Rome, where he adopted the Christian way through reading "barbarian writings" (Jewish Scripture, Or 29:1). There he became a student of Justin Martyr, after whose death (ca. 163-167) he returned to his birthplace in 172 CE. Almost nothing is known of his later life in Syria (d. ca. 180-190).

Bovine Colostrum And Gene Expression In E. Coli., Savanna Love Schepis Jan 2010

Bovine Colostrum And Gene Expression In E. Coli., Savanna Love Schepis

Theses

Escherichia coli cause mastitis upon entry into the mammary gland. Colostrum is the first milk produced by the lactating mother and provides immune nutrients for protection of the newborn. Bacterial pathogenesis may be modulated by exposure to colostral components. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of host immune factors in colostrum on E. coli K-12 growth, RNA transcription, and gene expression. Samples of E. coli K-12 were grown to mid-log in LB (Luria Bertani) broth and colostrum-treated LB broth. One of each culture was heat shocked to create one control and three different treatments. Growth was …

Reporting Problems In Human Subjects Research: A Comparative Study, Dawn F. Underwood

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to discover whether differences exist among institutional review boards (IRBs) in categorizing and reporting problems in social science research to the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP). IRBs were grouped by institutional size and type. The study also employed an experimental design to look for differences among those who reviewed a decision chart from OHRP (experimental group) and those who did not review the decision chart (control group). From a population of 474 IRB contacts at public, four-year institutions of higherEducation, 187 survey responses were received. Factorial ANOVA and independent measures t -tests were …

Using The Public Trust Doctrine To Ensure The National Forests Protect The Public From Climate Change, John Meyer Jan 2010

Using The Public Trust Doctrine To Ensure The National Forests Protect The Public From Climate Change, John Meyer

UC Law Environmental Journal

Logging is one of the major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. Every unnecessary timber sale by the Forest Service contributes to our climate change crisis. While President Barack Obama has stated his intention to have science guide the decision-making process, he recently allocated half a billion dollars for logging projects under a statutory framework that lacks scientific grounding. After an introduction, the article will look at the Healthy Forests Restoration Act and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 - a framework that encourages the Forest Service to continue polluting our atmosphere. Part III will look at the historical …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Predators can have remote effects on prey populations that are connected by migration (i.e. prey metapopulations) because predator-mediated changes in prey behavior and abundance effectively transmit the impact of predators into predator-free prey populations. Behavioral changes in prey that might give rise to remote effects are altered rates of migration or activity in the presence of predation risk (called non-consumptive effects, fear- or μ-driven effects, and risk effects). Changes in prey abundance that may result in remote effects arise from changes in prey density due to direct predation (i.e. consumptive effects, also called N-driven effects and predation effects). Remote effects …

Rational Quantitative Structure–Activity Relationship (Rqsar) Screen For Pxr And Car Isoform-Specific Nuclear Receptor Ligands, Ann M. Dring, Linnea E. Anderson, Saima Qamar, Matthew A. Stoner

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) and pregnane X receptor (PXR) are closely related orphan nuclear receptor proteins that share several ligands and target overlapping sets of genes involved in homeostasis and all phases of drug metabolism. CAR and PXR are involved in the development of certain diseases, including diabetes, metabolic syndrome and obesity. Ligand screens for these receptors so far have typically focused on steroid hormone analogs with pharmacophore-based approaches, only to find relatively few new hits. Multiple CAR isoforms have been detected in human liver, with the most abundant being the constitutively active reference, CAR1, and the ligand-dependent isoform CAR3. …
