Black Elk Speaks Says So : Elders On Telling About Traditional Tribes, James A. Starkewolf

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

In this action research thesis, Indian elders give suggestions on storytelling curriculum about traditional tribes. To see where we are going, we must know where we have been, who we come from, what we do and should do, and how to sense the hand of the Trickster. Human beings are rooted in traditional tribes, ancient future societies such as those we are documenting. Indian Country is a world apart, under siege and, as renowned activist Leonard Peltier has said, prison is the fastest growing reservation. Educational standards require children know of broken treaties, massacres, and internecine warfare, but not that …

Historic Genetic Diversity Of The Endangered White Abalone (Haliotis Sorenseni), Heather L. Hawk Jan 2010

Historic Genetic Diversity Of The Endangered White Abalone (Haliotis Sorenseni), Heather L. Hawk

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

In the 1970's, white abalone populations in California suffered catastrophic declines due to over-fishing, and the species has been listed under the Endangered Species Act since 2001. Genetic diversity of a modern population of white abalone was estimated to be significantly lower than similar Haliotis species, but the effect of the recent fishery crash on the species throughout its range was unknown. In this investigation, DNA was extracted from 39 historic and 27 recent dry abalone shells from California, and 18 historic dry shells from Baja California, Mexico. The DNA from the shells was of sufficient quality for the reproducible …

Background

The C8 Health Project was created, authorized, and funded as part of the settlement agreement reached in the case of Jack W. Leach, et al. v. E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company (no. 01-C-608 W.Va., Wood County Circuit Court, filed 10 April 2002). The settlement stemmed from the perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA, or C8) contamination of drinking water in six water districts in two states near the DuPont Washington Works facility near Parkersburg, West Virginia.

Objectives

This study reports on the methods and results from the C8 Health Project, a population study created to gather data that would allow …

Can Weak Substitution Be Rehabilitated?, V. Kerry Smith, Mary F. Evans, H. Spencer Banzhaf, Christine Poulos Jan 2010

Can Weak Substitution Be Rehabilitated?, V. Kerry Smith, Mary F. Evans, H. Spencer Banzhaf, Christine Poulos

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

This paper develops a graphical analysis and an analytical model that demonstrate how weak substitution can be used for non-market valuation. Weak complementarity and weak substitution represent preference restrictions that allow us to develop equivalent price changes to describe quantity or quality changes in non-market goods. The price changes are Hicksian equivalents in that they yield the same utility changes as would the quantity or quality changes. After discussion of several potential applications of weak substitution, the paper develops the parallel between the restriction and recent strategies from modeling differentiated goods.

Concurrent Simulation Of The Eddying General Circulation And Tides In A Global Ocean Model, Brian K. Arbic, Alan J. Wallcraft, E. Joseph Metzger Jan 2010

Concurrent Simulation Of The Eddying General Circulation And Tides In A Global Ocean Model, Brian K. Arbic, Alan J. Wallcraft, E. Joseph Metzger

United States Navy: Publications

This paper presents a five-year global simulation of HYCOM, the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model, that simultaneously resolves the eddying general circulation, barotropic tides, and baroclinic tides with 32 layers in the vertical direction and 1/12.5° (equatorial) horizontal grid spacing. A parameterized topographic wave drag is inserted into the model and tuned so that the surface tidal elevations are of comparable accuracy to those in optimally tuned forward tide models used in previous studies. The model captures 93% of the open-ocean sea-surface height variance of the eight largest tidal constituents, as recorded by a standard set of 102 pelagic tide gauges …

Malondialdehyde–Acetaldehyde Adduct Is The Dominant Epitope After Mda Modification Of Proteins In Atherosclerosis, Michael J. Duryee, Lynell W. Klassen, Courtney S. Schaffert, Dean J. Tuma, Carlos Hunter, Robert P. Garvin, Daniel R. Anderson, Geoffrey M. Thiele Jan 2010

Malondialdehyde–Acetaldehyde Adduct Is The Dominant Epitope After Mda Modification Of Proteins In Atherosclerosis, Michael J. Duryee, Lynell W. Klassen, Courtney S. Schaffert, Dean J. Tuma, Carlos Hunter, Robert P. Garvin, Daniel R. Anderson, Geoffrey M. Thiele

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Antibodies to malondialdehyde (MDA)-modified macromolecules (adducts) have been detected in the serum of patients with atherosclerosis and correlate with the progression of this disease. However, the epitope and its formation have not been characterized. Studies have shown that excess MDA can be degraded to acetaldehyde, which combines with proteins to from a stable dihydropyridine adduct. To investigate, mice were immunized with MDA adducts in the absence of adjuvant and showed an increase in antibodies to MDA adducts and the carrier protein as the concentration of MDA was increased. In fact, a number of the commercially available antibodies to MDA-modified proteins …

Szlachetka, Allyson Lamb, Catherine Haorei, Saleena Alikunju, Huangui Xiong, James Keblesh, Jianuo Liu, Matthew C. Zimmerman, Jocelyn Jones, Terrence M. Donohue Jr., Yuri Persidsky, James Haorah

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

The studies presented here demonstrate the protective effect of acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) against alcoholinduced oxidative neuroinflammation, neuronal degeneration, and impaired neurotransmission. Our findings reveal the cellular and biochemical mechanisms of alcohol-induced oxidative damage in various types of brain cells. Chronic ethanol administration to mice caused an increase in inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and 3-nitrotyrosine adduct formation in frontal cortical neurons but not in astrocytes from brains of these animals. Interestingly, alcohol administration caused a rather selective activation of NADPH oxidase (NOX), which, in turn, enhanced levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and 4-hydroxynonenal, but these were predominantly localized in astrocytes …
