Allocating The Costs Of The Climate Crisis: Efficiency Versus Justice, Amy Sinden May 2010

Allocating The Costs Of The Climate Crisis: Efficiency Versus Justice, Amy Sinden

Washington Law Review

In the international negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement to reduce the greenhouse-gas emissions that are driving global warming, the developed and developing countries are talking past each other. The developed world is speaking the language of efficiency, while the developing world speaks the language of justice. Economic theory and the concept of efficiency are fine for answering the question of who should reduce, but that is not the contentious issue. When it comes to the hotly contested issue of who should pay, economic theory offers no guidance, and the developing world is right to insist that we look to …

Using Electronic Books To Increase Elementary Students’ Motivation To Read, Lauren Ashley Short May 2010

Using Electronic Books To Increase Elementary Students’ Motivation To Read, Lauren Ashley Short

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

One of the main challenges that elementary teachers face is developing a reading program that adequately meets the need of all students. Given that not all students learn in the same manner, it is imperative that teachers find ways to motivate and excite all students when it comes to reading. Research has shown that motivation for reading predicts reading achievement as it is reflected on standardized tests and in school grades (Sweet, Guthrie, & Ng, 1998). Forms of technology such as digital books, CD-ROM storybooks, and interactive software programs have been successful in both motivating students to read and improving …

Working Rhetoric And Composition., Bruce Horner, Min-Zhan Lu

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Given the multiple meanings of rhetoric and composition, as well as the vexed history of institutional relationships between these two terms, it is important for scholars to trace how they are “worked”—that is, how they materially function—in a variety of specific circumstances.

Dna Viruses: The Really Big Ones (Giruses), James L. Van Etten, Leslie C. Lane, David Dunigan May 2010

Dna Viruses: The Really Big Ones (Giruses), James L. Van Etten, Leslie C. Lane, David Dunigan

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Viruses with genomes greater than 300 kb and up to 1200 kb are being discovered with increasing frequency. These large viruses (often called giruses) can encode up to 900 proteins and also many tRNAs. Consequently, these viruses have more protein-encoding genes than many bacteria, and the concept of small particle/small genome that once defined viruses is no longer valid. Giruses infect bacteria and animals although most of the recently discovered ones infect protists. Thus, genome gigantism is not restricted to a specific host or phylogenetic clade. To date, most of the giruses are associated with aqueous environments. Many of these …

Performance, Properties And Plasticity Of Identified Oxytocin And Vasopressin Neurones In Vitro, William E. Armstrong, L. Wang, C. Li, R. Teruyama

Faculty Publications

The neurohypophysial hormones oxytocin (OT) and vasopressin (VP) originate from hypothalamic neurosecretory cells in the paraventricular and supraoptic (SON) nuclei. The firing rate and pattern of action potentials arising from these neurones determine the timing and quantity of peripheral hormone release. We have used immunochemical identification of biocytin-filled SON neurones in hypothalamic slices in vitro to uncover differences between OT and VP neurones in membrane and synaptic properties, firing patterns, and plasticity during pregnancy and lactation. In this review, we summarise some recent findings from this approach: (i) VP neuronal excitability is influenced by slow (sDAP) and fast (fDAP) depolarising afterpotentials …

Interaction Of Francisella Asiatica With Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus) Innate Immunity, Esteban Soto, Denise Fernandez, Ronald Thune, John P. Hawke

Faculty Publications

Members of the genus Francisella are facultative intracellular bacteria that cause important diseases in a wide variety of animals worldwide, including humans and fish. Several genes that are important for intramacrophage survival have been identified, including the iglC gene, which is found in the iglABCD operon in the Francisella sp. pathogenicity island (FPI). In the present study, we examined the interaction of wild-type Francisella asiatica and a ΔiglC mutant strain with fish serum and head kidney-derived macrophages (HKDM). Both the wild-type and the mutant strains were resistant to killing by normal and heat-inactivated sera. The wild-type F. asiatica is able …

Terrorism Ideology And Perceptions Of Homeland Security In Tennessee Law Enforcement, Adam Baldwin May 2010

Terrorism Ideology And Perceptions Of Homeland Security In Tennessee Law Enforcement, Adam Baldwin

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Homeland security is a concept that has become firmly embedded in American society since the events of September 11, 2001. While recent research has begun to study the implications of homeland security in state and local law enforcement, few have focused on perceptions of homeland security ideology, policy, and practice. Therefore, this study focuses on the impact that homeland security ideology, policy, and practice has had on the local law enforcement community by examining the varying levels of individual understanding, agreement, and support for the concept. Moderate levels of agreement were found regarding homeland security clarity at federal, state, and …

Examining The Behavioral Intentions Of Older Adults As Virtual Tourists In The Context Of A Second Life Destination, Dorinda Christian

All Dissertations

ABSTRACT
Tourism opportunities are being promoted heavily on the web, yet one of the largest and most lucrative markets, older adults are least likely to use the internet. In an effort to explore barriers to and potential acceptance of technology for tourism experiences, this study followed closely ten older adults through a learning process with technology. Qualitative methodology was used to explore in-depth the experience of these older adults being exposed to online virtual world technology for the first time and exploring the process by which technology acceptance takes place. The findings indicate that online virtual world such as Second …

The Accuracy Of Observers' Estimates Of The Effect Of Glare On Nighttime Vision: Do We Exaggerate The Disabling Effects Of Glare?, Stacy Balk May 2010

The Accuracy Of Observers' Estimates Of The Effect Of Glare On Nighttime Vision: Do We Exaggerate The Disabling Effects Of Glare?, Stacy Balk

All Dissertations

Designing headlights involves balancing two conflicting goals: maximizing visibility for the driver and minimizing the disabling effects of glare for other drivers. Complaints of headlight glare have increased recently. This project explored the relationship between subjective (discomfort and expected visual problems) and objective (actual visual problems) consequences of glare. Two experiments - a lab-based psychophysical study and a field study - quantified the accuracy of observers' estimates of the effects of glare on their acuity. In both experiments, participants over-estimated the extent to which glare degraded their ability to see a small high contrast target. Observers' estimates of the disabling …

Development Of Presynaptic Calcium Dynamics And Short-Term Plasticity In The Sc-Ca1 Synapse, Chessa Scullin May 2010

Development Of Presynaptic Calcium Dynamics And Short-Term Plasticity In The Sc-Ca1 Synapse, Chessa Scullin

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Following a presynaptic action potential, there is a rapid rise of [Ca2+]i in the immediate vicinity of Ca2+ channels that triggers membrane fusion and release of transmitter from vesicles within this microdomain. This presynaptic Ca2+ signal ([Ca2+]pre) then disperses to produce a residual Ca2+ ([Ca2+]res) that decays over the course of tens to hundreds of milliseconds. The [Ca2+]res has important implications in synaptic plasticity and is the basis for working memory storage. Ultimately [Ca2+]res is removed from the cytoplasm either into intracellular organelles or across the plasma membrane into the extracellular environment. Calcium influx pathways, cytoplasmic Ca2+ buffering proteins, and …

Relative Contributions Of Zinc And Calcium To Acute Injury To Hippocampal Ca1 Neurons, Robert M. Dietz May 2010

Relative Contributions Of Zinc And Calcium To Acute Injury To Hippocampal Ca1 Neurons, Robert M. Dietz

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Spreading depression (SD) is a wave of severe depolarization that spreads across brain tissue. For several decades, it has been suggested that (SD) may play a role in the expansion of brain injury following ischemic insults, and may also be involved in non-injurious pathologies such as migraine aura. The major goals of this study were to examine cellular mechanisms that contribute to the initiation of different forms of SD, and in particular the potential roles of the cations Ca2+ and Zn2+. Work in this thesis examined SD in hippocampal slices acutely prepared from adult mice. Initial studies used the Na+/K+ …

Siamese Cooperates With The Cdh1-Like Protein Ccs52a1 To Establish Endoreplication In Arabidopsis Thaliana Trichomes, Remmy Kasili, Jason D. Walker, L. Alice Simmons, Jing Zhou, Lieven De Veylder, John C. Larkin May 2010

Siamese Cooperates With The Cdh1-Like Protein Ccs52a1 To Establish Endoreplication In Arabidopsis Thaliana Trichomes, Remmy Kasili, Jason D. Walker, L. Alice Simmons, Jing Zhou, Lieven De Veylder, John C. Larkin

Faculty Publications

Endoreplication, also known as endoreduplication, is a phyogenetically widespread modified version of the cell cycle in which DNA replication is not followed by cell division. The SIAMESE (SIM) gene of Arabidopsis thaliana encodes the founding member of a novel class of plant-specific cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitors and is a key regulator of endoreplication during the development of trichomes (shoot epidermal hairs). Here, we have identified mutations in the CCS52A1 gene as genetic modifiers of the multicellular trichome phenotype of sim mutants. Loss-of-function ccs52A1 mutations dramatically enhance the multicellularity of sim mutants trichomes in double mutants, whereas overexpression of CCS52A1 completely …
