Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2: A New Target For Neurogenic Hypertension, Yumei Feng, Huijing Xia, Robson A. Santos, Robert Speth, Eric Lazartigues

HPD Articles

Overactivity of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is involved in the pathogenesis of hypertension, and an overactive brain RAS has been highlighted in several genetic and experimental models. Until now, angiotensin II (Ang II) was thought to be the main effector of this system, and the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)-Ang II-Ang II type 1 receptor axis was the main target for antihypertensive therapies. A new member of the RAS, ACE2 (angiotensin-converting enzyme type 2), has been identified in organs and tissues related to cardiovascular function (e.g. heart, kidney and blood vessels) and appears to be part of a counter-regulatory pathway to buffer …

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Little is known about the present-day occurrence of cetaceans found in offshore waters in the Gulf of Alaska; however, whaling records and a few recent surveys have shown this area to be important habitat. The U.S. Navy maintains a maritime training area in the central Gulf of Alaska, east of Kodiak Island, and has requested additional information on marine mammal presence and use of this area. To describe the occurrence and distribution of marine mammals in and around the U.S. Navy training area, a line transect visual and acoustic survey was conducted 10-20 April 2009 from the NOAA ship Oscar …

Visualsthesia: Complex Music Visualization For Live Performance, Tracy Lee Dendy May 2010

Visualsthesia: Complex Music Visualization For Live Performance, Tracy Lee Dendy

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Visualsthesia is intended as an interactive visual experience made for the musicians who have influenced my studies while I've been attending Syracuse University. I offer these musicians a gift that I have imagined and created in honor of them, using the medium I desired to grow in. Visualsthesia is a visualization of a live musical performance generated in real-time. The concept is based on Synesthesia, a neurological condition that mixes up the senses. One common type of synesthesia is seeing a color when one hears a note or instrument. Visualsthesia turns that psychological connection between color and music into an …

Prosody And Interpretation, James A. Erekson May 2010

Prosody And Interpretation, James A. Erekson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Prosody is a means for “reading with expression” and is one aspect of oral reading competence. This theoretical inquiry asserts that prosody is central to interpreting text, and draws distinctions between syntactic prosody (for phrasing) and emphatic prosody (for interpretation). While reading with expression appears as a criterion in major assessment instruments (National Center for Education Statistics, 1995), fluency research has focused primarily on syntactic prosody. This article presents lesser-known functions of emphatic (or expressive) prosody. Emphatic prosody in reading helps readers make their inferential thinking manifest. The intent of this article is to elucidate the differences between syntactic and …

What Word Identification Strategies Can Be Used To Support A Middle School Reader Who Struggles With Decoding?, Sarah E. Homer May 2010

What Word Identification Strategies Can Be Used To Support A Middle School Reader Who Struggles With Decoding?, Sarah E. Homer

Education Masters

Abstract Similar to comprehension and fluency, word identification skills are crucial in a student’s acquisition of literacy skills. This research paper investigates a method used to promote word identification skills in middle school students reading at an emergent level. Existing research suggests that methods used with struggling readers must focus on filling in the gaps that have developed over the course of their emergent years. For the purpose of this study, the methods used for acquiring word identification skills were taken from Bear & Invernizzi’s (2008) Words their Way . These activities were implemented over the course of seven sessions …

The Fox In The Henhouse: Responses Of Chickens (Gallus Domesticus) To The Scent Of A Predator, Andrew C. Alba, Gregory B. Cunningham

Biology Faculty/Staff Publications

Domestic chickens (Gallus domesticus) are often used as a model species in testing bird olfaction. Previous studies have indicated that domestic chicks can discriminate between various odors, are attracted to familiar odors, and use olfactory cues during food selection. Additionally, studies have indicated that olfaction plays an important role in predator recognition in a variety of songbirds. It has yet to be demonstrated, however, whether chickens can detect predators using olfactory cues. To address this, we tested 1-2 day old naïve chicks with undiluted fox urine and found that they were able to detect this scent. This could …

Resource Discoverability At The Crossroads, Anne R. Diekama, Liz Woolcott, Cheryl D. Walters

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations

The Internet is changing how people find and use information. Users increasingly are discovering relevant resources outside traditional library systems and expect immediate access to resources at the point of discovery. These changes are challenging traditional thinking on how we should "catalog" and provide access to resources.

Panel discussion engaged the audience in a lively discussion of discoverability, trends in user information seeking behavior, the role of librarians in information seeking and finding, and implications for library system design. Audience comments are summarized in a wiki created to support this panel discussion: http://findability.wikispaces.com/ The wiki also contains a list of …

Third Grade Hands On Science Curriculum, Douglas Ray Cornwell May 2010

Third Grade Hands On Science Curriculum, Douglas Ray Cornwell

All Graduate Projects

In 2009, Washington State issued a new set of science standards. These new standards focus on building scientific literacy. With the emphasis now on scientific literacy rather than the traditional emphasis on fact memorization, many teachers must now find new ways to teach their science programs that reinforce understanding in science concepts rather than simple fact recollection. A science program that focuses on the constructivist learning philosophy and that offers students "hands on" activities as well as teacher led demonstrations is offered here to fill the role as an example of one of these new programs.

The Genetics Of Chilling Requirement In Apricot (Prunus Armeniaca L.), Bode Olukolu May 2010

The Genetics Of Chilling Requirement In Apricot (Prunus Armeniaca L.), Bode Olukolu

All Dissertations

Commercial production of apricot is severely affected by sensitivity to climatic conditions, an adaptive feature essential for cycling between vegetative or floral growth and dormancy. Yield losses are due to either late winter or early spring frosts or inhibited vegetative or floral growth caused by unfulfilled chilling requirement (CR). Studies in this dissertation developed the first high-density apricot linkage map; followed by a comparative mapping strategy to validate conservation of synteny, genome collinearity and stable quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling CR and bud break between apricot and peach; and ultimately attempt to identify key candidate genes following a linkage disequilibrium-based …

Software Algorithms To Coordinate And Improve Voltage Sag Ridethrough Capabilities Of Networked Industrial Processes, Owen Parks May 2010

Software Algorithms To Coordinate And Improve Voltage Sag Ridethrough Capabilities Of Networked Industrial Processes, Owen Parks

All Dissertations

For those who design, operate, and troubleshoot industrial processes, electric power quality is a subject that requires much consideration. Processes that use electronic sensors, actuators, and computation devices are heavily reliant on a stable, consistent input power source. When a power quality event such as a voltage fluctuation occurs, automation equipment often behaves unpredictably and causes process malfunction or failure.
Because industrial power consumers often blame their electric utility for these events, some utilities offer process susceptibility studies as a service for their customers. During a typical study, utility technicians and engineers perform in-house tests on suspect components or systems …

Vehicle Steering Systems - Hardware-In-The-Loop Simulator, Driving Preferences, And Vehicle Intervention, Jesse Black May 2010

Vehicle Steering Systems - Hardware-In-The-Loop Simulator, Driving Preferences, And Vehicle Intervention, Jesse Black

All Dissertations

The steering system is a critical component of all ground vehicles regardless of their propulsion source. Chassis directional control is provided by the steering system, which in turn relays valuable feedback about the road and vehicle behavior. As the primary feedback channel to the driver, the steering system also delivers the initial perception of a vehicle's handling and responsiveness to the consumer. Consequently, the steering system is an important aspect of the vehicle's evaluation and purchasing process, even if drivers are unaware of its direct influence in their decision making. With automobile purchases potentially hinging on the steering system, a …

Investigation Of Biochemistry And Enzymology Of Acyl-Coenzyme A Synthetase, Yu Meng May 2010

Investigation Of Biochemistry And Enzymology Of Acyl-Coenzyme A Synthetase, Yu Meng

All Dissertations

Acetyl-CoA, an essential metabolite at the junction of various anabolic and catabolic pathways, is generated both from the breakdown of carbohydrates, lipids, and amino acids, and from the activation of acetate. AMP-forming acetyl-CoA synthetase, a key enzyme for acetate activation into acetyl-CoA in all domains of life, is a member of the adenylate-forming enzyme superfamily. Although members in the superfamily have different biological functions, they all share the property of forming an acyl-adenylate intermediate. Here I describe my research on characterization of a medium-chain acyl-CoA synthetase from Methanosarcina acetivorans (MacsMa) and identification of key residues in acyl substrate …

Silence No More: A Transformative Transcendental Phenomenological Study Investigating The Experiences Of Teen Mothers Who Go To College In The Rural Southeast, Angela Rogers May 2010

Silence No More: A Transformative Transcendental Phenomenological Study Investigating The Experiences Of Teen Mothers Who Go To College In The Rural Southeast, Angela Rogers

All Dissertations

According to ethnographer Kristin Luker (1996) 'most poignantly, in the vast majority of cases, giving birth while still a teenager is a pledge of hope, an acted-out wish that the lives of the next generation will be better than those of the current generation, that this young mother can give her child something that she never had.' Unfortunately, teen pregnancy prevention rhetoric, which often perpetuates the negative socially constructed image of teenage mothers, frequently focuses on the economic costs that teen pregnancy is reported to have. Not enough research has been devoted to the individual experiences of teen mothers, in …

Beyond Justice: Death And The Retribution Principle In The Book Of Job, Varunaj Churnai May 2010

Beyond Justice: Death And The Retribution Principle In The Book Of Job, Varunaj Churnai

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Churnai, Varunaj., “Beyond Justice: Death and the Retribution Principle in the Book of Job.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2010. 232 pp.

In recent decades, scholars have tended to interpret what Job says about death either as part of the broader reading of the Old Testament about death, or by imposing ancient Near Eastern mythological concepts upon the text of Job, read apart from the Old Testament’s wisdom tradition. This dissertation attempts to redress the latter trend of interpretation by articulating that what Job says about death is related to Job’s struggle to understand his relationship to God in relation to …

Port St. Johns Theater Project, Arielle Lever

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

For my Capstone Project, I chose to teach drama in Port St. Johns, a rural village in South Africa. My original intent was to develop a drama curriculum to implement at the Sisonke School, a local primary school and the Eluxoweni Boys Home, a nearby orphanage for boys. I spent the summer researching Augosto Boal’s work and ultimately developed the curriculum based on my research, past teaching experience, and material I had learned as a student here in the drama department. My original goal was to have some sort of final production, to give the children the empowering tool of …

Theatre For A New Theater: A Play On Architecture, Alex Coulombe May 2010

Theatre For A New Theater: A Play On Architecture, Alex Coulombe

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The project entails transforming a former military fort into a theater. The scopic parameters native to both fort and theater can provide a field of operation for an architecture that simultaneously mobilizes and exposes the machinery of spectacle. In tandem, amplifying and distorting existing conditions of the fort and repurposing them for a theatrical program can provide catalytic parameters for design that are typically absent when designing from a clean slate.

Corporealities: From The Logic Of Expression Toward An Ethics Of Bodies In Merleau-Ponty, Donald Arthur Landes May 2010

Corporealities: From The Logic Of Expression Toward An Ethics Of Bodies In Merleau-Ponty, Donald Arthur Landes

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Having developed a phenomenology of lived and embodied experience in his first major work, Ph nom nologie de la perception (1945), French philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1908-1961) began to worry that his phenomenological approach remained nonetheless attached to the"philosophy of consciousness" that he had aimed to dissolve. Such a philosophy, namely, the idea that there is a transcendental mind separate from, though somehow attached to the body was, for Merleau-Ponty, the underlying problem with modern philosophy, modern humanism, and the implicit ontology of modern science. Turning his phenomenological gaze towards politics and aesthetics, he began to explore what he called the"paradox …
