Inhibition Of Escherichia Coli Atp Synthase By Polyphenols And Their Derivatives., Prasanna Keerthi Dadi May 2010

Inhibition Of Escherichia Coli Atp Synthase By Polyphenols And Their Derivatives., Prasanna Keerthi Dadi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We have studied the inhibitory effect of natural and structurally modified polyphenols on Escherichia coli ATP synthase to test (I) if the beneficial dietary effects of polyphenols are related to their inhibitory actions on ATP synthase, (II) if inhibitory effects of polyphenolic compound could be augmented through structural modifications, and (III) if they can act as antimicrobial agent through their actions on ATP synthesis. X-ray crystal structures of polyphenol binding sites suggested that polyphenols bind at a distinct polyphenol binding pocket, at the interface of α,β,γ-subunits. We found that both natural and modified polyphenols inhibit E. coli ATP synthase to …

Assessing Commercial Organic And Conventionally Grown Vegetables By Monitoring Selected Heavy Metals Found In Them., Charles Kafui Dotse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Commercially available organic and conventionally grown vegetables were studied by quantitative determination of selected metals in them and to determine if any differences found are statistically significant. These findings can help the consumers to determine if the vegetable products are within the recommended maximum limits as proposed by the joint FAO/WHO Expert committee on organic foods designation. Eight edible vegetables were purchased from local stores in both the organic and conventionally grown categories. Samples were digested with concentrated nitric acid and the metals monitored were zinc, copper, lead, iron, cadmium, and nickel using flame atomic absorption. The concentration range for …

Exploring The Lower Third: The Use, Innovations, And Future Of Snipes In The U.S. Television Industry., Aaron M. Sharp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Digital video recorders have given a growing number of viewers the ability to skip television commercials. In an effort to combat ad-skipping, television providers and advertisers are looking at ways to embed advertising into the video content; one way this can be accomplished is with graphic overlays known as snipes. Little is known about how content providers use snipes and what research they have conducted. This study is qualitative and uses long telephone interviews with 8 respondents from various cable television network and broadcast affiliate stations; examining the characteristics of innovation, as found in Rogers's (1995) diffussion of innovation theory. …

A Family-Based Association Study Of Conduct Disorder., Xueqiu Jian May 2010

A Family-Based Association Study Of Conduct Disorder., Xueqiu Jian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Conduct disorder (CD) is a psychiatric syndrome in childhood and adolescence that is one of the most common childhood disorders with continuously increasing prevalence but uncertain pathogenesis. We performed a genome-wide, family-based association study of CD using P2BAT/FBAT software. The data is gathered from Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA) and International Multi-Center ADHD Genetics Project (IMAGE).

Using COGA data, we identified 20 markers which showed suggestive associations (p<10-3) with CD. Nine of them are located in known genes. Two genes, ADAM10 and CAMK2A, which had been reported associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD), bipolar disorder, …

The Effects Of Large Terrestrial Mammals On Seed Fates, Hoarding, And Seedling Survival In A Costa Rican Rain Forest, Erin K. Kuprewicz May 2010

The Effects Of Large Terrestrial Mammals On Seed Fates, Hoarding, And Seedling Survival In A Costa Rican Rain Forest, Erin K. Kuprewicz

Open Access Dissertations

Terrestrial mammals affect numerous aspects of plant demography, colonization, and community structure in Neotropical forests. Granivorous mammals destroy seeds via seed predation and seedlings through herbivory, negatively affecting plant fitness. Mammals can also positively affect plants by dispersing or hoarding seeds. Seed fate outcomes are contingent on the interaction between mammal seed handling strategies and the intrinsic anti-predation defenses possessed by seeds. In field experiments at La Selva Biological Station, I investigated how collared peccaries (Pecari tajacu) and Central American agoutis (Dasyprocta punctata) affect five species of large seeds that have various defenses against predation. Overall, peccaries consumed and killed …

Scalability Study For Robotic Hand Platform, Melissa Monahan May 2010

Scalability Study For Robotic Hand Platform, Melissa Monahan

Theses

The goal of this thesis project was to determine the lower limit of scale for the RIT robotic grasping hand. This was accomplished using a combination of computer simulation and experimental studies. A force analysis was conducted to determine the size of air muscles required to achieve appropriate contact forces at a smaller scale. Input variables, such as the actuation force and tendon return force, were determined experimentally. A dynamic computer model of the hand system was then created using Recurdyn. This was used to predict the contact (grasping) force of the fingers at full-scale, half-scale, and quarter-scale. Correlation between …

"Neither The Hue Of Their Complexion Nor The Blood Of Afrik Have Any Connection With Cowardice:" The Impact Of British Slave Emancipation In The American Revolution, Murphy Macduffey Wood

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The American Revolution teaches many important lessons concerning the struggle for freedom and independence. The voluminous record amassed by historians on the subject focuses on every aspect of the war from the Enlightenment’s influence on the writings of men like Thomas Jefferson down to the type of buttons worn on the uniforms of the combatants. The scant attention given to the role of slaves during and after the conflict belies the critical role these men and women played in shaping its outcome. Moreover, a closer evaluation of the strong desire to be free present in the slaves, and how they …

The River And The Factory: Momentum And Shifting Dynamics Between The Shenandoah River And Avtex Fibers, 1939-1989, Christina Wulf

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

From 1940-1989, a huge rayon factory—at one time the largest in the world—operated on the banks of the South Fork of the Shenandoah River in the Town of Front Royal, Virginia. Three different companies owned the facility: American Viscose Corporation (AVC) built it in 1939 and ran it until 1963 when the Food Machinery Corporation (FMC Corp.) conglomerate purchased AVC. In 1976, an FMC executive bought the rayon plant in Front Royal in a leveraged buyout, renaming the facility Avtex Fibers, Inc. From early on, the plant had serious problems with waste materials—including many toxic substances—produced when manufacturing rayon. During …

Job Satisfaction In Young Professional Athletic Trainers, Jennifer Stollery May 2010

Job Satisfaction In Young Professional Athletic Trainers, Jennifer Stollery

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Job satisfaction levels in young professional athletic trainers in multiple settings were examined quantitatively using the Job Satisfaction Survey (Spector, 1997) and qualitatively using an open-ended survey question. Job satisfaction levels were calculated to find that young professional athletic trainers are satisfied with their jobs according to the normative mean data for the scale. Post hoc analysis of the comparison of satisfaction levels by setting suggests that college/university athletic trainers have significantly lower job satisfaction levels than secondary school and clinic/outreach athletic trainers. Qualitative data suggests a high negative response rate revealing pay and operating procedures as two of the …

The Talented Mr. Littlepage & The Spirit Of ’76: An American Character Study, Chris R. Pullen May 2010

The Talented Mr. Littlepage & The Spirit Of ’76: An American Character Study, Chris R. Pullen

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The curious life of Lewis Littlepage, an American-born courtier in late eighteenth century Europe, revealed the true nature of the United States’ exceptional identity and highlighted the negative effects of social refinement on its unique character. Initially imbued with republican values, Littlepage traveled to Europe in order to pursue a practical political education that would render him useful to the U.S. However, the Virginian’s experiences overseas transformed him into a man unable to control his ambitions, incapable of feeling loyalty to any nation or set of principles, and more dedicated to his personal comfort and luxury than to any sense …

Orthographic Transparency Ratings For Spanish–English Cognates From The Paivio, Yuille, And Madigan Imagery Norms, José A. Montelongo, Tasha Roehrick, Anita Hernández May 2010

Orthographic Transparency Ratings For Spanish–English Cognates From The Paivio, Yuille, And Madigan Imagery Norms, José A. Montelongo, Tasha Roehrick, Anita Hernández

Graduate Studies in Education

Cognates are words that are orthographically, semantically, and syntactically similar in two languages. There are over 20,000 Spanish-English cognates in the Spanish and English languages. Research has shown that cognates facilitate vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension for language learners when compared to non-cognate words. Language researchers often require calibrated materials to study the effects of word characteristics on learning and memory. In this study, orthographic transparency ratings for five hundred nouns drawn from the Paivio, Yuille, and Madigan (1968) imagery norms were collected.

Incognesia, Holly George May 2010

Incognesia, Holly George

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

A monograph for the MFA Thesis Exhibition for Holly George, exhibited in Sawhill Gallery in Duke Hall April 5, 2010 - April 10, 2010. The title of the exhibition, Incognesia, is indicative of the artist's process of mapmaking. It is a fusion of other words, an invention based on fact but nevertheless on the verge of fantasy. Like each word in Lewis Caroll's poem, "Jabberwocky," the title calls multiple meanings to mind. It utilizes the Latin incognitae, meaning "unknown," but also references its later cartographic usage of "undiscovered" lands. While the suffix, -nesia, links to a series of islands such …

Investigation Of The Roles Of Kinesin-5 Motor Protein Family Members In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Bareza Abbas Rasoul May 2010

Investigation Of The Roles Of Kinesin-5 Motor Protein Family Members In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Bareza Abbas Rasoul

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Eukaryotic cells contain a cytoskeleton that performs a range of essential functions, including intracellular transport, nuclear division and shaping the cell. There are various kinesin motor proteins involved in organizing the microtubule cytoskeleton during interphase and mitosis. The plant Arabidopsis thaliana has the largest number of kinesins amongst all sequenced organisms. Many of those kinesins have not been studied. Members of the Kinesin-5 family cross link microtubules and are crucial for separation of mitotic spindle poles. There are 4 members of this family in Arabidopsis: Kinesin-5 A, B, C and D, but only Kinesin-5 C has been studied previously. Each …

Activation Of Gabaa And 5ht1a Receptors In The Raphe Pallidus Abolish The Cardiovascular Responses To Stress In Conscious Rats, Nhut Minh Pham Le May 2010

Activation Of Gabaa And 5ht1a Receptors In The Raphe Pallidus Abolish The Cardiovascular Responses To Stress In Conscious Rats, Nhut Minh Pham Le

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Serotonergic neurons of the raphe pallidus area of the brainstem are involved in the cardiovascular responses to stress. However, the manner in which they mediate these responses is not well understood and severe abnormalities in this system have been associated with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. In the current study, microinjections of muscimol and 8-OH-DPAT (GABAA and 5HT1A receptor agonists, respectively) into the raphe pallidus abolished the increase in mean arterial pressure and the tachycardiac responses following air jet, handing, and restraint stress that were observed following microinjections of artificial cerebrospinal fluid. The stress responses following muscimol microinjections suggest that this …

Investigation Of The Role Of Bam9 In Starch Metabolism In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Elizabeth Ann Steidle May 2010

Investigation Of The Role Of Bam9 In Starch Metabolism In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Elizabeth Ann Steidle

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Beta-amylases play an essential role in night time starch degradation in leaves. There are nine known beta-amylases (BAMs) in Arabidopsis thaliana. This research is focused on BAM9, which is localized in the chloroplasts but is unique compared to active BAM proteins. First, alignments of BAM9 orthologs and catalytically active paralogs suggest that BAM9 may not be catalytically active and may not bind to starch, but it may bind to another molecule at a remote site. Secondly, microarray data shows a peak of BAM9 expression at the dark/light transition which is contradictory to what one would expect for an active BAM …

Builders And Wanderers: How Two Tomboys Escape Gender Conformity In Katherine Paterson’S Newbery-Winning Novels, Laura J. Fly

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This paper looks at the importance of tomboy characters in children’s literature, specifically focusing on Katherine Paterson’s Newbery-winning novels, Bridge to Terabithia and Jacob Have I Loved. Though much of the children’s literature arena remains dominated by “boy books,” the use of tomboy characters in literature offers an opportunity for teachers and parents to push aside the gender conventions and stereotypes that are reinforced through trite and redundant curriculum. The strong tomboy transcends masculine-feminine roles and develops identity outside of their restrictions. She is an ideal for young females working toward gender equality while allowing young males to safely explore …

The Figure Of The Nun And The Gothic Construction Of Femininity In Matthew Lewis’S The Monk, Ann Radcliffe’S The Italian, And Charlotte Brontë’S Villette, Marie Hause May 2010

The Figure Of The Nun And The Gothic Construction Of Femininity In Matthew Lewis’S The Monk, Ann Radcliffe’S The Italian, And Charlotte Brontë’S Villette, Marie Hause

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The treatment of nuns and convents in gothic novels contributes to the presentation of various attitudes toward women who resist normative female roles. This is illustrated in the consideration of three central, and very different, gothic or post-gothic works: Matthew Lewis's The Monk (1796), Ann Radcliffe's The Italian (1796), and Charlotte Brontë's Villette (1853). These novels draw on conflicting popular associations of nuns and convents, including nuns as chaste, sexual, or tragic and convents as brothels, prisons, or liberating communities. In each novel, anti-Catholicism also comes into play in the way that nuns work as foci for explorations of female …

Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory Faculty Publications

West Nile virus, first identified within the United States in 1999, has since spread across the continental states and infected birds, humans and domestic animals, resulting in numerous deaths. Previous studies in mice identified the Oas1b gene, a member of the OAS/RNASEL innate immune system, as a determining factor for resistance to West Nile virus (WNV) infection. A recent case-control association study described mutations of human OAS1 associated with clinical susceptibility to WNV infection. Similar studies in horses, a particularly susceptible species, have been lacking, in part, because of the difficulty in collecting populations sufficiently homogenous in their infection and …
