The Role Of The Hemopexin Domain Of Matrix Metalloproteinases In Cell Migration, Antoine Hugues-Olivier Dufour Dec 2010

The Role Of The Hemopexin Domain Of Matrix Metalloproteinases In Cell Migration, Antoine Hugues-Olivier Dufour

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The biological functions of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) extend beyond extracellular matrix degradation. Non-proteolytic activities of MMPs are just beginning to become understood. The role of proMMPs in cell migration was herein evaluated using transfected COS-1 cells with various proMMP cDNAs employed in a Transwell chamber migration assay. Latent MMP-2 and MMP-9 enhanced cell migration to a greater extent than latent MMP-1,. 3,. 11 and. 28. To examine if proteolytic activity is required for MMP-enhanced cell migration, three experimental approaches including a fluorogenic substrate degradation assay, transfection of cells with catalytically inactive mutant of MMP cDNAs, and addition of MMP inhibitors …

Home Range, Habitat Selection, And Migratory Pathways Of Canada Geese Wintering At The Santee National Wildlife Refuge, Molly Giles Dec 2010

Home Range, Habitat Selection, And Migratory Pathways Of Canada Geese Wintering At The Santee National Wildlife Refuge, Molly Giles

All Theses

Information on local and flyway-scale space use is lacking for the cohort of migrant geese (Branta canadensis interior) that winter in and adjacent to the Santee National Wildlife Refuge in Summerton, South Carolina. I examined home range and habitat selection of Canada geese in this region. I deployed transmitters on 17 geese (9 VHF and 8 PTT) on wintering grounds at Santee NWR during the winter of 2009-2010. Estimates of fixed kernel home range size ranged from 214.2 to 263.6 ha for VHF-marked geese and 1190.2 to 1915.6 ha for PTT-marked geese. Home ranges of all birds were compact and …

Wing Pathology Of White-Nose Syndrome In Bats Suggests Life-Threatening Disruption Of Physiology, Paul M. Cryan, Carol Uphoff Meteyer, Justin G. Boyles, David S. Blehert Dec 2010

Wing Pathology Of White-Nose Syndrome In Bats Suggests Life-Threatening Disruption Of Physiology, Paul M. Cryan, Carol Uphoff Meteyer, Justin G. Boyles, David S. Blehert

KIP Articles

White-nose syndrome (WNS) is causing unprecedented declines in several species of North American bats. The characteristic lesions of WNS are caused by the fungus Geomyces destructans , which erodes and replaces the living skin of bats while they hibernate. It is unknown how this infection kills the bats. We review here the unique physiological importance of wings to hibernating bats in relation to the damage caused by G. destructans and propose that mortality is caused by catastrophic disruption of wing-dependent physiological functions. Mechanisms of disease associated with G. destructans seem specific to hibernating bats and are most analogous to disease …

Dodging A Bullet: Mcdonald V. City Of Chicago And The Limits Of Progessive Originalism, Dale E. Ho Dec 2010

Dodging A Bullet: Mcdonald V. City Of Chicago And The Limits Of Progessive Originalism, Dale E. Ho

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

The Supreme Court’s decision in last term’s gun rights case, McDonald v. City of Chicago, punctured the conventional wisdom after District of Columbia v. Heller that “we are all originalists now.” Surprisingly, many progressive academics were disappointed. For “progressive originalists,” McDonald was a missed opportunity to overrule the Slaughter-House Cases and to revitalize the Privileges or Immunities Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. In their view, such a ruling could have realigned progressive constitutional achievements with originalism and relieved progressives of the albatross of substantive due process, while also unlocking long-dormant constitutional text to serve as the source of new unenumerated …

Expression Of Functional Bacterial Undecaprenyl Pyrophosphate Synthase In The Yeast Rer2{Delta} Mutant And Cho Cells., Jeffrey S. Rush, Sergey Matveev, Ziqiang Guan, Christian R H Raetz, C J Waechter

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

During evolution the average chain length of polyisoprenoid glycosyl carrier lipids increased from C55 (prokaryotes) to C75 (yeast) to C95 (mammalian cells). In this study, the ability of the E. coli enzyme, undecaprenyl pyrophosphate synthase (UPPS), to complement the loss of the yeast cis-isoprenyltransferase in the rer2Δ mutant was tested to determine if (55)dolichyl phosphate (Dol-P) could functionally substitute in the protein N-glycosylation pathway for (75)Dol-P, the normal isoprenologue synthesized in S. cerevisiae. First, expression of UPPS in the yeast mutant was found to complement the growth and the hypoglycosylation of carboxypeptidase Y defects suggesting that the (55)polyprenyl-P-P intermediate was …

Topology And Function Of Nyctalopin In Yeast And In-Vitro Translation Systems., Pasano Pasano Bojang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Congenital stationary night blindness 1 (CSNBl) is a genetic disorder characterized in humans by night blindness, low visual acuity and myopia. CSNB 1 is caused by defects in genes that are involved in signaling between photoreceptors and depolarizing bipolar cells (DBCs). DBCs utilize a metabotropic glutamate receptor-6 (Grm6) cascade that modulates the activity of a non-specific cation channel. CSNBI is diagnosed by a reduced b-wave in the electroretinogram (ERG). A b-wave indicates that DBCs are depolarized in response to a flash of light. In the dark, there is a tonic release of glutamate from the photoreceptors into the synaptic cleft. …

New Energy Geopolitics?: China, Renewable Energy, And The "Greentech Race", Joel B. Eisen Dec 2010

New Energy Geopolitics?: China, Renewable Energy, And The "Greentech Race", Joel B. Eisen

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Commentators believe that programs in China promoting development of new renewable energy capacity have produced astonishing achievements in a short period of time. Evoking the "space race" between the United States and the U.S.S.R. after the launch of the Sputnik satellite in 1957, observers contend that the United States and China are in a "greentech race" to secure international leadership in the development and deployment of renewable energy. As U.S. Energy Secretary Chu has put it, many believe this is a modern "Sputnik moment." This Article finds that China's programs and initiatives are indeed leading to considerable success, but, using …

Green Diesel: Finding A Place For Algae Oil, Fred Bosselman Dec 2010

Green Diesel: Finding A Place For Algae Oil, Fred Bosselman

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The prospect of obtaining domestically-produced biodiesel from algae has attracted wide investor interest. Although many analysts predict that economic production is five to ten years away, the production process involves such a wide range of environmental and land use issues that it is not premature to begin thinking about the kinds of places in which "green biodiesel" could be efficiently made in the United States. Our land use and environmental laws were all drafted by people who never imagined the possibility that huge volumes of algae would be an important energy resource; nor could they have known that the location …

Ecological Effects Of Benthic Suspension Feeding On Plankton Community Structure In Coastal Systems, Jer¢Nimo Pan Dec 2010

Ecological Effects Of Benthic Suspension Feeding On Plankton Community Structure In Coastal Systems, Jer¢Nimo Pan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation explored biological benthic-pelagic coupling in model shallow systems (coastal lagoons) currently at alternative ecological states, most likely the product of intense anthropogenic exploitation of estuarine resources (extractive shellfisheries). Currently, dominant grazers of algae include planktonic microorganisms (nanoflagellates, heterotrophic dinoflagellates, ciliates) instead of significant filtration by macrobenthos. The research focused on the role of benthic suspension-feeding animals in modulating composition, trophic structure, and ecological processes in the planktonic food web at current and hypothetically-increased population densities that would result from restoration.Firstly, laboratory experiments explored the potential of marine mussels (Geukensia demissa, Mytilus edulis) and clams (Mercenaria mercenaria) in grazing …

The Role Of Mesd In Wnt Signaling And Lipoprotein Metabolism, Janet Lighthouse Dec 2010

The Role Of Mesd In Wnt Signaling And Lipoprotein Metabolism, Janet Lighthouse

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Deletion of the mesoderm development (Mesd) gene region blocks gastrulation and mesoderm differentiation in mice. In cell culture, MESD is required for the localization of WNT co-receptors LRP5/6 to the cell membrane. For this reason, loss of LRP5/6 from the cell surface in Mesd mutants likely prevents WNT signaling and is responsible for the polarity defects observed in Mesd-deficient embryos. In this study, we generated a targeted Mesd knockout and verified that loss of Mesd blocks WNT signaling in vivo and mesoderm differentiation. We also identified essential domains in the MESD protein, and demonstrated that MESD function in vitro was …

Functional Analysis Of The Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Family In Mammary Epithelial Cell Models Of Breast Cancer, Guang Lin Dec 2010

Functional Analysis Of The Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Family In Mammary Epithelial Cell Models Of Breast Cancer, Guang Lin

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) superfamily of enzymes is encoded by ~100 genes. In coordinating with protein tyrosine kinases (PTK), they regulate signaling pathways that control a broad spectrum of fundamental physiological processes and their disruption underlie human diseases. To date, however, the functional analysis of PTPs is not as advanced as for PTKs. Therefore, the ultimate goal of this dissertation is to develop the tools for global analysis of the function of PTPs through RNAi-mediated loss-of-function screens. I constructed a PTP short-hairpin RNA (shRNA) library, which contains ~5 shRNAs specifically designed to target each of the PTPs. In collaboration …

Sighing Into A League Of His Own: Rushdie's Use Of Camäes's Epic And Cervantes's Romance In The Moor's Last Sigh, Amanda M. Ponnwitz Dec 2010

Sighing Into A League Of His Own: Rushdie's Use Of Camäes's Epic And Cervantes's Romance In The Moor's Last Sigh, Amanda M. Ponnwitz

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This paper provides an analysis of Salman Rushdie's The Moor's Last Sigh use Luis Vaz de Camäes's epic poem The Lusiads and Miguel de Cervantes's satiric romance Don Quixote. After a brief discussion of epic and romance, I trace Rushdie's use and re-use of various aspects from both of these works. A close reading of The Lusiads and The Moor's Last Sigh will show that in re-using Camäes's epic, Rushdie provides India with a nationalistic work and voice that reclaims India from her imperial past, while also providing a pluralist perspective for the world to learn from. Furthermore, an analysis …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The immune system is a complex network of cells regulated by a number of signaling pathways to drive specific host defenses against invading pathogens. The NF-&kappaB (nuclear factor of the kappa light chain enhancer in B cells) family of inducible transcription factors is a critical regulator of many innate and adaptive immune responses. NF-&kappaB activation by several receptors converges upon two upstream kinases, IKK&alpha and IKK&beta, that regulate gene induction. Many studies report that IKK&beta is the critical kinase involved in NF--&kappaB activation, although at a transcriptional level, both kinases are needed to obtain the full spectrum of gene induction. …

Enhancing Solar Disinfection: The Effect, Robert J Wallace

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Escherichia coli contamination is a continuing issue in the developing world. Lack of funding and difficulty in instituting new projects makes it necessary to discover an affordable, low-cost alternative to traditional methods of sanitation. Recent studies have shown that the hydroxyl radical, which is known to be produced from iron-bearing minerals through the Fenton reaction, can be damaging to both single-celled and multi-cellular organisms. Using hydroxyl radicals produced from low-cost, common materials would be a viable solution to the problem of contamination. It is proposed that using inexpensive, wide-spread, iron-rich materials to produce the hydroxyl radicals could lead to a …

Chromatin Protein Hmgb2 In Neural Progenitor Cells And Adult Neurogenesis, Ariel Benjamin Abraham Dec 2010

Chromatin Protein Hmgb2 In Neural Progenitor Cells And Adult Neurogenesis, Ariel Benjamin Abraham

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Neural stem cells (NSCs) and neural progenitor cells (NPCs) are distinct groups of cells present in the embryonic and adult mammalian central nervous system (CNS). Proliferation of NSCs and NPCs is regulated by several molecular factors including the cyclin dependant kinase inhibitors (CDKI), such as p16Ink4a, and negative regulators of cell cycle, such as p19Arf. Chromatin proteins, including chromatin protein high mobility group A2 (HMGA2), regulate the expression of p16Ink4a and p19Arf in NSCs and NPCs, demonstrating the critical regulatory role that chromatin proteins play in NSC and NPC proliferation. In addition to HMGA2, it is likely that other chromatin …

High Level Describable Attributes For Predicting Aesthetics And Interestingness, Sagnik Dhar

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

With the rise in popularity of digital cameras, the amount of visual data available on the web is growing exponentially. Some of these pictures are extremely beautiful and aesthetically pleasing. Unfortunately the vast majority are uninteresting or of low quality. This paper demonstrates a simple, yet powerful method to automatically select high aesthetic quality images from large image collections with performance significantly better than the state of the art. We also show significantly better results on predicting the interestingness of Flickr images, and on a novel problem of predicting query specific interestingness. Our aesthetic quality estimation method explicitly predicts some …

A Spiritual Revisioning: Alice Walker From An Ecofeminist Perspective, Lauren Esposito Dec 2010

A Spiritual Revisioning: Alice Walker From An Ecofeminist Perspective, Lauren Esposito

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis explores the work of Alice Walker from an ecofeminist perspective in order to demonstrate the connections between black women and the environment. Walker offers a spiritual revisioning that embraces nature while challenging the doctrines of patriarchy and Christianity, and the social justifications that support male and Christian hegemony. Through poetry, literature, and essays, she critiques the cultural and social practices of systems used toenforce dominance over black women and nature. She attempts to dismantle hierarchical relationships that subjugate the position of women and the environment and that deprive both of spirituality and reverence.

Mésica Criolla: Cultural Practices And National Issues In Modern Peru. The Case Of Lima (1920-1960), Luis Martin G¢Mez

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

My thesis is a historical analysis of a group of musical forms called m£sica criolla in twentieth-century Peru. I analyze the historical relocation of these musical forms as symbols of Peruvianness during the period 1920 to 1960. I argue that the idea of the existence of a national music called m£sica criolla emerged as a product of the urban modernization that had been transforming the landscape of the city of Lima since the second half of the nineteenth century. Faced with this transformation, early twentieth-century Lime¤o intellectuals asserted that Lime¤os displayed distinctive artistic attitudes in their daily lives. For them, …

Modulation Of Monocytic Activation Following Spinal Cord Injury Reduces Secondary Injury And Neurodegeneration, Jaime Ann Emmetsberger Dec 2010

Modulation Of Monocytic Activation Following Spinal Cord Injury Reduces Secondary Injury And Neurodegeneration, Jaime Ann Emmetsberger

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Spinal cord injury (SCI) sets off a cascade of biochemical and cellular events that destroy neurons, cause demyelination, and trigger an inflammatory immune response. Microglia, the immune-competent cells of the central nervous system, migrate to the site of injury, become activated and are thought to contribute to secondary damage and neurodegeneration following SCI. Conversely, growth factors and cytokines released by activated microglia may promote regeneration. Controversy exists over the neurodegenerative verses the neuroregenerative roles of activated microglia, and which role predominates following SCI. The activation state of microglia determines their neurotoxic and neurotrophic properties that influence the surrounding environment to …

Seasonal Aggregations Of The Florida Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris) In The Port Everglades And Intracoastal Regions Of Fort Lauderdale, Florida., Jaime M. Goldman

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris), a subspecies of the West Indian manatee, is one of the most endangered marine mammals in United States waters. The Florida manatee is the only manatee that ranges into subtropical and temperate regions. During the winter months manatees adopt a “refuging strategy” where they aggregate at warm-water sources immediately following decreases in the ambient water temperature to below 20° C (68° F) in order to avoid cold stress syndrome (CSS). During the winter manatees aggregate in warm water refuges, including natural warm water springs and the effluent discharges of power plants.

Stroke can be caused by focal ischemia due to cerebral artery occlusion or by global ischemia that occurs when global blood supply to the brain is interrupted. The acute phase of ischemic brain injury is followed by a more prolonged period of revascularization and repair that can last for several months. One hallmark of this repair phase includes an endogenous neural stem/progenitor cell (NSPC) regenerative response that occurs concomitant with angiogenesis. Several studies suggest that the cytogenic response is beneficial for recovery following stroke, however, more studies need to be done to determine whether the beneficial effects are due to …

Biotech Biofuels: How Patents May Save Biofuels And Create Empires, Adam Wolek Dec 2010

Biotech Biofuels: How Patents May Save Biofuels And Create Empires, Adam Wolek

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The United States' primary transportation energy sources are fossil fuels, namely, gasoline and diesel. These products have high environmental, security, and financial costs. A strong emphasis has been placed on biofuels, especially ethanol and biodiesel, to lessen reliance on fossil fuels. Historically, high production costs, lack of infrastructure, return on investment anxieties, and concerns about scaling-up production have slowed the development of these alternative technologies. Today, biotechnological solutions are lowering productions costs and making large scale production more economically feasible. Patents can lessen anxieties about investment as they can provide longer-term protection and market exclusivity for patented technologies. As biofuels …

Testing The Use Of Molluscs To Infer Climate With Special Reference To The Late Cenozoic Molluscs Of The Meade Basin, Southwest Kansas., Brian William Steffen 1975-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Twenty-six fossil assemblages of land and freshwater molluscs from the Pliocene to the present, were collected from locations near the town of Meade, Kansas, U.S.A. and were analyzed (along with the extant molluscan fauna of Meade County, Kansas) to look for changes in molluscan diversity through time. The fossil assemblages were analyzed for two reasons: I) to test the hypothesis that diversity (measured as taxonomic richness, dominance, turnover and habitat type) did not change through the five million years of this study (HOI); and 2) to test the hypothesis that there is no relationship between the taxonomic composition of a …
