Does Socio/Economic Status Affect Environmental Awareness In Elementary School Children Interacting With School Gardens?, Grady C. Erickson

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

This is a case study involving three elementary schools in the greater Lincoln, Nebraska area. These schools were chosen to provide insight to three different economic backgrounds. Saratoga and Randolph from Lincoln Public Schools, and Norris Elementary part of Norris Public Schools 160 was the third school involved in the study. This case study focused on seeing whether socio/economic background had any effect on environmental awareness. To do so, surveys were handed out to each school to help measure environmental awareness. These surveys also helped determine where the environmental literacy standards were in the elementary schools of Lincoln, Nebraska. The …

Shock Rhetoric, David Robert Nelson Dec 2010

Shock Rhetoric, David Robert Nelson

Dissertations

Social movements create a public perception of themselves through rhetorical messages and demonstrations. In order to gain the public's attention, some radical groups use any rhetorical means necessary, including offensive remarks and conduct. Groups, such as the Westboro Baptist Church and Bash Back!, rhetorically challenge the boundaries of prudence. The purpose of this study is to identify, depict, and provide insight regarding shock rhetoric. This study will compare protest methods, visual imagery, and language choices used by Bash Back! and the Westboro Baptist Church. This dissertation helps illuminate why and how groups or individuals use shock rhetoric.

A Little Bat And A Big City: Nocturnal Behavior Of The Tricolored Bat (Perimyotis Subflavus) Near Indianapolis Airport, Jared Scot Helms Dec 2010

A Little Bat And A Big City: Nocturnal Behavior Of The Tricolored Bat (Perimyotis Subflavus) Near Indianapolis Airport, Jared Scot Helms

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I captured 16 Perimyotis subflavus on property owned by the Indianapolis International Airport, of those 16 animals I obtained roosting data on all 16 and foraging data on 11 individuals. The goal of this project was to see if a short broad winged bat’s foraging and roosting habits were affected by the fragmentation of habitat due to rapid urbanization. Using radio telemetry to find roosts and to create multi-azimuth triangulation I was able to create data points and place them onto a habitat map inside ArcGIS software. Sampling the size of woodlots available to the bats I was able to …

A New Troodontid Theropod Dinosaur From The Lower Cretaceous Of Utah, Phil Senter, James I. Kirkland, John Bird, Jeff A. Bartlett

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Background: The theropod dinosaur family Troodontidae is known from the Upper Jurassic, Lower Cretaceous, and Upper Cretaceous of Asia and from the Upper Jurassic and Upper Cretaceous of North America. Before now no undisputed troodontids from North America have been reported from the Early Cretaceous. Methodology/Principal Findings: Herein we describe a theropod maxilla from the Lower Cretaceous Cedar Mountain Formation of Utah and perform a phylogenetic analysis to determine its phylogenetic position. The specimen is distinctive enough to assign to a new genus and species, Geminiraptor suarezarum. Phylogenetic analysis places G. suarezarum within Troodontidae in an unresolved polytomy with Mei, …

Olfactory Mate Choice And Potential Chemical Signals Of The White-Throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia Albicollis), Peter Sebastian Dec 2010

Olfactory Mate Choice And Potential Chemical Signals Of The White-Throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia Albicollis), Peter Sebastian

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chemical odor signals are well documented in mammals, and yet almost nothing is known about the use of chemical odor signals in birds due to the traditional view that birds have a no sense or a poor sense of smell. Recent studies have revealed the traditional view to be unfounded, but more work is necessary to 1) expand our knowledge of avian olfaction in passerine species and 2) determine whether birds utilize chemical signals. The aim of this thesis was to 1) test for olfactory-based choice in a passerine species, and examine the chemical composition of preen oil for potential …

Development And Characterization Of Shock Tubes For Laboratory Scale Blast Wave Simulation, Aaron D. Holmberg Dec 2010

Development And Characterization Of Shock Tubes For Laboratory Scale Blast Wave Simulation, Aaron D. Holmberg

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The prevalence of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in American soldiers exposed to a blast wave has created an urgent need to better understand the effects of blast wave insult to the head. Developing techniques that can experimentally simulate well controlled blast waves in a laboratory environment is a critical component of the research efforts towards this goal. For this work, a 4-in. cylindrical uniform shock tube and a nonuniform shock tube combining a 4-in. cylindrical gas driver with a 9-in. square driven section have been developed. The hosting laboratory, gas handling system, multichannel data acquisition systems, and the related network …

The River Discontinuum: Applying Beaver Modifications To Baseline Conditions For Restoration Of Forested Headwaters, Denise Burchsted, Melinda Daniels, Robert Thorson, Jason Vokoun Dec 2010

The River Discontinuum: Applying Beaver Modifications To Baseline Conditions For Restoration Of Forested Headwaters, Denise Burchsted, Melinda Daniels, Robert Thorson, Jason Vokoun

Center for Integrative Geosciences

Billions of dollars are being spent in the United States to restore rivers to a desired, yet often unknown, reference condition. In lieu of a known reference, practitioners typically assume the paradigm of a connected watercourse. Geological and ecological processes, however, create patchy and discontinuous fluvial systems. One of these processes, dam building by North American beavers (Castor canadensis), generated discontinuities throughout precolonial river systems of northern North America. Under modern conditions, beaver dams create dynamic sequences of ponds and wet meadows among free-flowing segments. One beaver impoundment alone can exceed 1000 meters along the river, flood the valley laterally, …

Donald Sutherland: The Politics And Erotics Of Submission, Jean Walton

English and Creative Writing Faculty Publications

When Donald Sutherland burst onto the American film scene with his portrayal of Hawkeye in the unexpected Robert Altman hit M*A* S*H (1970), the popular press couldn't seem to agree on how best to characterize this new "un-Hollywood" star, fixing by turns on his Canadian background, his political activism, or his "funny peculiar" sense of humor (Dorothy Manners, "Sutherland - 'Actors Should Be Involved in Pertinent Causes,'" L.A. Examiner Sunday, 12 July 1970, n.p.; Douglas Marshall, "The Funniest Film Actor Canada Has Ever Produced," Maclean's, 1 September 1970, 42). After the release a few months later of Kelly's Heroes (1970), …

Perception Of Control: Accuracy Among Optimists And Pessimists On Noncontingency And Contingengy Tasks, Spencer Baunn M.S. Dec 2010

Perception Of Control: Accuracy Among Optimists And Pessimists On Noncontingency And Contingengy Tasks, Spencer Baunn M.S.

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The learned helplessness theory asserts that depressed individuals unrealistically believe that they have little to no control over aversive outcomes in their lives. Paradoxically, research on judgment of control has demonstrated that depressed individuals are not necessarily pessimistic, but rather more realistic than non-depressed individuals. Most of the research on depressive realism has investigated individual’s perceived control in situations in which they have no actual control. Few studies have investigated perception of control in situations where control is possible. Considering that many circumstances in life are controllable, it is important to examine how different personality variables contribute to accurate judgments …

Uneasy Neighbors: Maroons And Indians In Suriname, Richard Price Dec 2010

Uneasy Neighbors: Maroons And Indians In Suriname, Richard Price

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This paper presents a history of relations between Saramaka Maroons and Amerindians in Suriname, which ran the gamut from limited friendship and solidarity to bitter enmity. During the seventeenth century, as African plantation slaves fled into the forest, individual Indians served as occasional advisors and spouses for Saramakas. During the decades of war between the nascent Saramaka people and the colonial government, Indians served the Government as the most effective of jungle scouts and bounty hunters against Saramakas. By the time of the 1762 peace, one Saramaka village included about a dozen Akurio Indians as well as several Arawak captives …

Exploring A Web-Based Pedagogical Model To Enhance Gis Education, Richard Lisichenko

Journal of STEM Teacher Education

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are defined as: “An integrated collection of computer software and data used to view and manage information about geographic places, analyze spatial relationships, and model spatial processes.” (Wade & Sommer, 2006) Originally, GIS users were comprised primarily of scientists and engineers. In time, hardware and software advancements provided the catalyst for expanded use by the global community. In addition, the continued integration and access to information systems via the Internet and mobile devices has contributed to the success of GIS in society. Aside from commercial training, institutions of higher learning have played a major role in …

Law Clerks Out Of Context, Parker B. Potter Jr. Dec 2010

Law Clerks Out Of Context, Parker B. Potter Jr.

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “In a previous article, I examined judicial opinions in cases in which law clerks have gone wild, principally by doing things that law clerks just aren‘t supposed to do, such as convening court, conducting independent factual investigations into matters before their judges, or leaking drafts of opinions to the press. Here, I focus on opinions in federal cases that discuss two other categories of unusual law-clerk activity, serving as a source of evidence, and going to court, as a litigant.

The article is informed by my ten years of experience as a trial court law clerk in the state …

Generation Of Conformation Sensor Recombinant Antibodies To Understand Redox Regulation Of Ptp1b, Aftabul Haque Dec 2010

Generation Of Conformation Sensor Recombinant Antibodies To Understand Redox Regulation Of Ptp1b, Aftabul Haque

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) plays important roles in down-regulation of insulin signaling. Although it has been established as a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of diabetes and obesity, the finding of pharmaceutically acceptable inhibitors remains challenging. PTP1B is regulated by reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced in response to insulin. The reversibly oxidized form of this enzyme (PTP1B-OX) is inhibited and undergoes profound conformational changes at the active site. We hypothesized that a conformation-sensor antibody that recognizes PTP1B-OX may stabilize the inactive state and inhibit phosphatase activity. We isolated PTP1B-OX-specific single chain variable fragments (scFvs) from an antibody phage …

Multixenobiotic Resistance (Mxr) Inhibition And Interactive Toxic Effects Of The Cationic Surfactant, Benzalkonium Chloride, In Embryonic Medaka (Oryzias Latipes), John Gondek Dec 2010

Multixenobiotic Resistance (Mxr) Inhibition And Interactive Toxic Effects Of The Cationic Surfactant, Benzalkonium Chloride, In Embryonic Medaka (Oryzias Latipes), John Gondek

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Contaminated environments represent a challenge to resident species. Organisms must possess underlying mechanisms of resistance to protect against a broad range of environmental insults. One mechanism likely conferring resistance is expression of low substrate specificity membrane efflux transporters termed multixenobiotic resistance (MXR). MXR transporters confer resistance by preventing toxics from entering into cells and also by expelling potentially cyto- and genotoxic metabolites. Chemicals known as chemosensitizers, which can inhibit MXR function thus represent a threat to aquatic organisms. This study used embryos of medaka (Oryzias latipes) to measure MXR activity and inhibition through a dye exclusion assay. This assay was …

Butterfly Movement In A Post Agricultural Landscape, Norah Warchola Dec 2010

Butterfly Movement In A Post Agricultural Landscape, Norah Warchola

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

A central question in landscape ecology is how organisms move through fragmented landscapes. To explore this I have studied how butterflies behave at habitat borders and how readily they move through matrix (non habitat) vegetation. My work focuses on a guild of fruit feeding nymphalid butterflies and how they react to fragmentation in a post agricultural landscape, with emphasis on the behavior and distribution of the Hackberry Emperor Asterocampa celtis and the Question Mark Polygonia interrogationis. Using a combination of observations at habitat edges and large scale trapping across different vegetation types, I measured nymphalid vegetation preference and how this …
