Controlling Reductive Elimination From Novel I(Iii) Salts Using A Secure Method, Joseph W. Graskemper
Controlling Reductive Elimination From Novel I(Iii) Salts Using A Secure Method, Joseph W. Graskemper
Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a valuable clinical, research, and diagnostic technique for human and animal organ imaging. The current market for PET in the United States is $500 million per year and is projected to be $5.4 billion per year globally by 2015. To synthesize labeled radiotracers, we are most interested in using 18F as the isotope of choice because it is a nearly ideal positron emitting radionuclide.
Electron-rich aromatic substrates can be particularly difficult to fluorinate. We show that reductive elimination of I(III) diaryliodonium salts provide increased fluorination of electron-rich aromatic substrates. Modest yields of fluorinated product …
Regulation Of Atp Binding Cassette Transporter A1 And G1 Expression By Fatty Acids, Chai Siah Ku
Regulation Of Atp Binding Cassette Transporter A1 And G1 Expression By Fatty Acids, Chai Siah Ku
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
High density lipoprotein (HDL) is an atheroprotective element which is critical in the reverse cholesterol transport (RCT) pathway to eliminate excess cholesterol from the periphery of the body. A low plasma HDL cholesterol levels indicate a higher risk of getting cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Formation and metabolism of HDL largely rely on ATP binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) and G1 (ABCG1) that are transporters to facilitate the efflux of cellular cholesterol to outside of cells. ABCA1 in the liver and small intestine is the major contributing factor for HDL formation. On the other hand, ABCA1 and ABCG1 present in macrophages contribute …

The two variables in this study were: perceived student performance skills based on survey results from both student and teacher participants, and pre-existing Minnesota graduation testing results and grade point averages from Fertile-Beltrami School District students. The three questions that were researched in this study were: (1) What effects does a 1:1 Laptop initiative have on student academic performance based on …
Prevention Of Spinal Anesthesia Induced Hypotension During Elective Cesarean Section, Keith Nelson
Prevention Of Spinal Anesthesia Induced Hypotension During Elective Cesarean Section, Keith Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
The incidence of cesarean delivery has increased dramatically over the past decade. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), cesarean deliveries accounted for more than 30% of all births in 2005, setting a new United States record. Due to the increased risks, morbidity, and mortality associated with general anesthesia for cesarean sections, regional anesthesia is most often selected for non-emergent cesarean deliveries. Unless a preexisting labor epidural is in place, spinal anesthesia is most often the regional technique of choice for cesarean deliveries due to its immediate onset and dense blockade. Hypotension …

The Effects Of Chlordiazepoxide On Resurgence In Male Rats: A Preliminary Investigation, Marc Alden Weeden
The Effects Of Chlordiazepoxide On Resurgence In Male Rats: A Preliminary Investigation, Marc Alden Weeden
Dissertations
Resurgence is defined as the recurrence of a previously but no longer reinforced behavior when a more recently reinforced behavior undergoes extinction. The present study investigated the effects of chlordiazepoxide (CDP), a member of the class of drugs known as benzodiazepines, on the resurgence of lever pressing responses emitted by male Sprague-Dawley rats. The general procedure was as follows: An operant (left lever presses) was reinforced and subsequently extinguished. Then, a second operant (right lever presses) was reinforced. Finally, 0, 1, 3, 10, and 30 mg/kg doses of CDP were administered via intraperitoneal injections to groups of nine animals each …

Existing front-line vector control measures, such as insecticide-treated nets and residual sprays, cannot break the transmission cycle of Plasmodium falciparum in the most intensely endemic parts of Africa and the Pacific. The goal of malaria eradication will require urgent strategic investment into understanding the ecology and evolution of the mosquito vectors that transmit malaria. Priority areas will include understanding aspects of the mosquito life cycle beyond the blood feeding processes which directly mediate malaria transmission. Global commitment to malaria eradication necessitates a corresponding longterm commitment to vector ecology.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The immune system is of profound importance for host survival due to its ability to clear many acquired diseases. In case of infections and cancer, disease arises due to under-performance of immune system. Whereas in autoimmunity and transplantation, deleterious immunity to normal self-antigens and allogeneic antigens arises due to enhanced immune responses. Regulatory T (Treg) cells play a critical role in immune homeostasis in health and disease. Treg cells are important in the development and maintenance of immune tolerance towards self or transplantation antigens. However, Treg cells also play an obstructive role in cancer-related immunity by suppressing various effector cells. …

Genetic Evidence For High Propagule Pressure And Long-Distance Dispersal In Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta Monachus) Invasive Populations, Anders Gonçalves Da Silva, Jessica R. Eberhard, Timothy F. Wright, Michael L. Avery, Michael A. Russello
Faculty Publications
The monk parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) is a successful invasive species that does not exhibit life history traits typically associated with colonizing species (e.g., high reproductive rate or long-distance dispersal capacity). To investigate this apparent paradox, we examined individual and population genetic patterns of microsatellite loci at one native and two invasive sites. More specifically, we aimed at evaluating the role of propagule pressure, sexual monogamy and long-distance dispersal in monk parakeet invasion success. Our results indicate little loss of genetic variation at invasive sites relative to the native site. We also found strong evidence for sexual monogamy from patterns of …

Presenilin Is Necessary For The Function Of Cbp In The Adult Drosophila Cns, Randy S. Boyles
Presenilin Is Necessary For The Function Of Cbp In The Adult Drosophila Cns, Randy S. Boyles
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Dominant mutations in Presenilin (Psn) have been correlated with the formation of Aß- containing plaques in patients with inherited forms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, a clear mechanism directly linking amyloid plaques to the pathology of familial or sporadic forms of AD has remained elusive. Thus, recent discoveries of several new substrates for Psn protease activity have sparked alternative hypotheses to explain the preclinical symptoms of AD. CBP (CREB-binding protein) is a haplo- insufficient transcriptional co-activator with histone acetyltransferase (HAT) activity that has been proposed to be a downstream target for Psn signaling. Individuals with reduced CBP levels have cognitive …

Shakespeare Adapting Chaucer: “Myn Auctour Shal I Folwen, If I Konne”, Scott A. Hollifield
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Geoffrey Chaucer's distinctively English spins on such genres as dream vision, fabliau and Breton lai, as well as his liberal citation of authorities in Troilus and Criseyde, offered early modern English poets the license to mingle sources and authorities within their work, rather than bend their writing to fit the format. Few authors took such productive advantage of Chaucerian permissiveness as William Shakespeare, whose narrative poems defer to Chaucer's distinctively English authority with a regularity comparable to his uses of Homer, Ovid, Virgil and Plutarch. This free-associative approach to auctoritee, the whetstone of the poet-playwright's dramatic imagination, suggests that …
A Sequential Analysis Of Staff Training Procedures To Efficiently Teach Novice Instructors To Implement Errorless Discrete-Trial Teaching Procedures, Jamie M. Severtson
A Sequential Analysis Of Staff Training Procedures To Efficiently Teach Novice Instructors To Implement Errorless Discrete-Trial Teaching Procedures, Jamie M. Severtson
Dissertations
Discrete trial teaching (DTT) is the most common techniques incorporated into intensive behavioral intervention programs for children diagnosed with autism. Errorless learning (EL) prompt fading strategies are frequently recommended during DTT because they often result in more efficient and effective instruction. Several variables may prevent agencies from offering extensive supervised training to instructors; therefore, timeefficient DTT staff training protocols are needed. The purpose of the present study was to conduct a sequential analysis of the efficacy of three methods for teaching errorless DTT procedures to novice instructors. These methods included: (a) a self-instruction manual, (b) an instructional video, (c) and …

Between The Great Idea And Kemalism: The Ymca At İzmir In The 1920s, Samuel David Lenser
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Despite the voluminous historical literature concerning American missionary efforts in the Middle East during the 19th and early 20th centuries, the international work of the Young Men’s Christian Association has figured only marginally into most of these accounts. Similarly, the Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1922 and the “Great Fire” of İzmir, which concluded that conflict and brought an end to Hellenism in Asia Minor, remain largely disregarded episodes in the English-language historiography of the immediate post-World War I era. This thesis will address the place of İzmir between the Greek “Great Idea” and Kemalist “Anatolianism,” the YMCA’s efforts to …

Camp Cooke: The First Army Post In Montana – Success And Failure On The Missouri, Rodger Lee Huckabee
Camp Cooke: The First Army Post In Montana – Success And Failure On The Missouri, Rodger Lee Huckabee
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Historians have long overlooked Camp Cooke as a part of Montana history. As the first military post in the territory, built in 1866, the presence of the 13th Infantry answered the call of citizens in the new territory who demanded the U.S. Government send armed protection Yet, after Camp Cooke was established, local residents and the press attacked that same military that had met their demands for a post in the territory. Sharp criticism berated the government for building Camp Cooke in a place even citizens within Montana called the “Badlands.”

Inferring Rules From Sound: The Role Of Domain-Specific Knowledge In Speech And Music Perception, Aaronell Shaila Matta
Inferring Rules From Sound: The Role Of Domain-Specific Knowledge In Speech And Music Perception, Aaronell Shaila Matta
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Speech and music are two forms of complex auditory structure that play fundamental roles in everyday human experience and require certain basic perceptual and cognitive abilities. Nevertheless, when attempting to infer patterns from sequential auditory input, human listeners may use the same information differently depending on whether a sound is heard in a linguistic vs. musical context. The goal of these studies was to examine the role of domain-specific knowledge in auditory pattern perception. Specifically, the study examined the inference of "rules" in novel sound sequences that contained patterns of spectral structure (speech or instrument timbre) and fundamental frequency (pitch). …

The city of Los Angeles can be a controversial and polarizing topic. In modern times, it has been criticized as a culturally shallow town filled with Hollywood starlets; however, at the same time, others praise the vast metropolis as a home for political, social, and cultural diversity. Errol Wayne Stevens, the former head of the Seaver Center for Western History Research at the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum, peels back the historical layers of Los Angeles in Radical L.A., presenting it as a battleground between staunch left- and rightwing coalitions. The very idea of chronicling radicalism is a difficult …

The Morphology Of Nouns In The Ugoroŋmo Language (Arara Of Pará), Shirley Dias Cardoso De Souza
The Morphology Of Nouns In The Ugoroŋmo Language (Arara Of Pará), Shirley Dias Cardoso De Souza
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis I describe the morphology of nouns in the Ugoroŋmo language (Arara of Pará), which is spoken by just over three hundred people. The Ugoroŋmo people live on the bank of the Iriri river, in two villages (Laranjal and Cachoeira Seca) in the state of Pará, Brazil.
The nouns of this language can be divided in three main groups: those that are not inflected for possession, those that may be inflected for possession, and those that must be inflected for possession (inherently possessed nouns). Possession is marked by two affixes: a possessor prefix and a possessive suffix. Inherently …
Pattern Recognition For Fault Detection, Classification, And Localization In Electrical Power Systems, Qais Hashim Alsafasfeh
Pattern Recognition For Fault Detection, Classification, And Localization In Electrical Power Systems, Qais Hashim Alsafasfeh
Dissertations
The longer it takes to identify and repair a fault, the more damage may result in the electrical power system, especially in periods of peak loads, which could lead to the collapse of the system, causing the power outage to extend for a longer period and larger parts of the electrical network. Reducing the outage time and immediate restoration of service can be achieved if the fault type and location are determined in a timely and precise manner.
An integrated algorithm that is based on generating unique signatures from the electric current signal to detect, classify, and localize a fault …
