Toward Using Games To Teach Fundamental Computer Science Concepts, Jeffrey Michael Edgington Aug 2010

Toward Using Games To Teach Fundamental Computer Science Concepts, Jeffrey Michael Edgington

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Video and computer games have become an important area of study in the field of education. Games have been designed to teach mathematics, physics, raise social awareness, teach history and geography, and train soldiers in the military. Recent work has created computer games for teaching computer programming and understanding basic algorithms.

We present an investigation where computer games are used to teach two fundamental computer science concepts: boolean expressions and recursion. The games are intended to teach the concepts and not how to implement them in a programming language.

For this investigation, two computer games were created. One is designed …

Impact Of Microsparticle Concentration Levels Upon Toxicity Of Phenol To Artemia, Federico Sinche Aug 2010

Impact Of Microsparticle Concentration Levels Upon Toxicity Of Phenol To Artemia, Federico Sinche

All Theses

Plastic pollution constitutes a threat to marine wildlife because of the deleterious impacts ranging from entanglement to ingestion of plastic debris. However, knowledge regarding the impacts of fragmented plastics into micron sizes and their interaction with other toxicants in the marine environment is still limited. In the present study the impact of polystyrene microspheres, 3 µm in diameter, upon toxicity of phenol to the brine shrimp Artemia was investigated in acute toxicity tests. The brine shrimp are employed as a model organism in marine toxicity tests. Phenol is a hydrophobic compound used as an intermediate resin discharged to the environment. …

Plant Sterol And Stanol Substrate Specificity Of Pancreatic Cholesterol Esterase, Andrew W. Brown, Jiliang Hang, Patrick H. Dussault, Timothy P. Carr Aug 2010

Plant Sterol And Stanol Substrate Specificity Of Pancreatic Cholesterol Esterase, Andrew W. Brown, Jiliang Hang, Patrick H. Dussault, Timothy P. Carr

Patrick Dussault Publications

Consumption of plant sterols or stanols (collectively referred to as phytosterols) and their esters results in decreased lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol, which is associated with decreased atherosclerotic risk. The mechanisms by which phytosterols impart their effects, however, are incompletely characterized. The objective of the present study is to determine if pancreatic cholesterol esterase (PCE; EC 3.1.1.13), the enzyme primarily responsible for cholesterol ester hydrolysis in the digestive tract, is capable of hydrolyzing various phytosterol esters and to compare the rates of sterol ester hydrolysis in vitro. We found that PCE hydrolyzes palmitate, oleate and stearate esters of cholesterol, stigmasterol, stigmastanol and …

The Quantification Of Displacement Of The Anterior Teeth In The Human Dentition, Peggy Jean Van Scotter-Asbach Aug 2010

The Quantification Of Displacement Of The Anterior Teeth In The Human Dentition, Peggy Jean Van Scotter-Asbach

Dissertations (1934 -)

The credibility of bite mark analysis as a forensic science is under fire in our legal system. The basis of opinions regarding the probability of a dental pattern observed in bite mark evidence matching a suspect's dentition has not been objectively substantiated. Though guidelines and standards are in place, bite mark analyses have failed to provide basic scientific methods in order to be deemed of evidentiary value. Forensic scientists need to take a step back and develop valid and reliable methodologies that provide a statistical approach for defining dental characteristics in the human dentition.

For this study, three computer-generated, mathematically …

Reducing The Risk Of Human Exposure To Wildlife Diseases, Tyler A. Campbell Aug 2010

Reducing The Risk Of Human Exposure To Wildlife Diseases, Tyler A. Campbell

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

As a professional biologist working for a government agency, I am required to carry a card alerting medical personnel that I may have been exposed to certain zoonotic diseases (animal diseases that can infect man) not routinely considered in differential diagnosis. Some of these pathogens are obscure and seldom heard of, such as monkeypox and Q fever; others more commonly make headlines, such as influenza, West Nile virus, Lyme disease, and Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. Hunters, ranchers, and biologists who work with wildlife have an increased risk of acquiring these diseases directly from animal hosts or their parasites. Here are some …

Decoding, Deciphering, And Applying Skills: Increasing Understanding On Mathematical Word Problems, Brenda Seely Wright

Education Masters

Students often struggle with math word problems for a variety of reasons. They have difficulty with vocabulary used, the amount of information given and how to decipher what to do with that information, or how to make the connections from the words to the mathematical skill. For this research, data was from the feedback of two secondary students who used three different types of graphic organizers to work with three different word problems taken from New York State Integrated Algebra Regents exams. The students were given the opportunity to create their own graphic organizer including the sections that they liked …

Ribosomal Biosynthesis Of The Cyclic Peptide Toxins Of Amanita Mushrooms (Invited Review), Jonathan D. Walton, Heather E. Hallen-Adams, Hong Luo Aug 2010

Ribosomal Biosynthesis Of The Cyclic Peptide Toxins Of Amanita Mushrooms (Invited Review), Jonathan D. Walton, Heather E. Hallen-Adams, Hong Luo

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Some species of mushrooms in the genus Amanita are extremely poisonous and frequently fatal to mammals including humans and dogs. Their extreme toxicity is due to amatoxins such as α- and β-amanitin. Amanita mushrooms also biosynthesize a chemically related group of toxins, the phallotoxins, such as phalloidin. The amatoxins and phallotoxins (collectively known as the Amanita toxins) are bicyclic octa- and heptapeptides, respectively. Both contain an unusual Trp-Cys cross-bridge known as tryptathionine. We have shown that, in Amanita bisporigera, the amatoxins and phallotoxins are synthesized as proproteins on ribosomes and not by nonribosomal peptide synthetases. The proproteins are 34–35 …

Procedural Rules Under Washington's Public Records Act: The Case For Agency Discretion, William D. Richard Aug 2010

Procedural Rules Under Washington's Public Records Act: The Case For Agency Discretion, William D. Richard

Washington Law Review

Voters adopted Washington’s Public Records Act (PRA) in 1972 as part of a broader ballot measure to enhance openness in state government. The PRA requires state government agencies, including statewide agencies and municipalities, to establish procedures so that the public can request copies of records agencies generate. The PRA exempts certain records from disclosure, and other statutes and case law supply additional exemptions. When an agency refuses to disclose records, the requester may ask a court to determine whether an exemption applies. If no exemption applies, the court may compel disclosure of the records and impose monetary penalties against the …

Role Of Serotonin (5-Ht) In Hypoxic And Hypercapnic Ventilatory Responses, Tejus A. Bale Aug 2010

Role Of Serotonin (5-Ht) In Hypoxic And Hypercapnic Ventilatory Responses, Tejus A. Bale

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Breathing is fundamental to life, and responding appropriately to hypercapnic and hypoxic conditions is essential to survival. Abberant respiratory behavior is a feature of a wide variety of clinical conditions, and appears to be central and causative to the progression and outcome of some diseases, including Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Evidence of serotonergic (5-HT) abnormalities within the medulla are amongst the most robust and consistent pathological findings in SIDS victims. It is hypothesized that these underlying brainstem abnormalities precipitate the failure of normal, protective homeostatic responses to physiological stressors. Understanding the mechanisms by which 5-HT modulates the responses to …

Global Genetic Stock Structure Of The Copper (Carcharhinus Brachyurus) And Dusky Sharks (Carcharhinus Obscurus): Interspecific Comparisons And Implications For Management, Martin Tomas Benavides Aug 2010

Global Genetic Stock Structure Of The Copper (Carcharhinus Brachyurus) And Dusky Sharks (Carcharhinus Obscurus): Interspecific Comparisons And Implications For Management, Martin Tomas Benavides

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Genetic stock structure information is needed to help delineate management units and monitor trade in sharks, many of which are heavily exploited and declining. Among these, the copper (Carcharhinus brachyurus) and dusky sharks (Carcharhinus obscurus) are considered some of the most vulnerable to overexploitation, given their K-selected life history strategy. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) categorizes the copper shark as “Near-Threatened” globally and the dusky shark as “Vulnerable” globally, with the Northwest Atlantic-Gulf of Mexico population qualifying for “Endangered.” Global mitochondrial stock structure is assessed for both C. brachyurus and C. obscurus by analyzing part of …

This dissertation is focused on improving the performance of the 3D shape measurement systems based on the digital fringe projection, phase shifting, and stereovision techniques. New camera and projector models and calibration algorithms as well as a novel system design based on a combined phase shifting and stereovision method are introduced. The first part of this dissertation introduces systems based on the digital fringe projection and phase shifting techniques. The effect of lens distortion on both the camera and projector is modeled based on careful calibration. Radial and tangential distortion parameters of different orders are analyzed and the right combination …

Adult Attachment Representations And Secure Base Use And Support In Couple Problem Solving Interactions, Susan Brockmeyer Aug 2010

Adult Attachment Representations And Secure Base Use And Support In Couple Problem Solving Interactions, Susan Brockmeyer

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Validity is more than a rich suite of empirical correlates. They have to be the right correlates. In the case of the Adult Attachment Interview, validation includes showing links to the secure base concept, the central concept in Bowlby's and Ainsworth's attachment theory. Important evidence for the AAI's validity comes from longitudinal research linking infant Strange Situation classifications to the same person's AAI classifications 20 years later (e.g. | Waters et al. 2000). In addition, Crowell et al. (2002) provided strong support for the attachment relevance of the AAI by showing that narrative coherence in the AAI is significantly related …

Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) has been steadily rising in the United States. The condition is characterized by elevated blood glucose levels and is preceded by insulin resistance. Before the onset of T2D patients go through a state of pre-diabetes. To be tested for pre-diabetes and diabetes, either a Fasting Plasma Glucose test or an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test may be used. While an estimated 24 million Americans have T2D, another 57 million Americans are estimated to be in a state of pre-diabetes. There are many risk factors that may contribute to the development of T2D including obesity, a high calorie …
