The Perilipin Homologue, Lipid Storage Droplet 2, Regulates Sleep Homeostasis And Prevents Learning Impairments Following Sleep Loss, Matthew S. Thimgan, Yasuko Suzuki, Laurent Seugnet, Laura Gottschalk, Paul J. Shaw
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
Extended periods of waking result in physiological impairments in humans, rats, and flies. Sleep homeostasis, the increase in sleep observed following sleep loss, is believed to counter the negative effects of prolonged waking by restoring vital biological processes that are degraded during sleep deprivation. Sleep homeostasis, as with other behaviors, is influenced by both genes and environment. We report here that during periods of starvation, flies remain spontaneously awake but, in contrast to sleep deprivation, do not accrue any of the negative consequences of prolonged waking. Specifically, the homeostatic response and learning impairments that are a characteristic of sleep loss …

Litomosoides (Nemata: Filarioidea) Of Bats From Bolivia With Records For Three Known Species And The Description Of A New Species, Juliana Notarnicola, F Agustín Jiménez-Ruíz, Scott L Gardner
Publications
Herein, we describe Litomosoides salazari n. sp. collected from the body cavity of the yellow bat, Lasiurus ega , from Bolivia. This new species of filarioid nematode is most closely related to the carinii group and is characterized by its relatively small size with the vulva located slightly posterior to the esophago-intestinal junction; an arrow-shaped buccal capsule; and a short, rounded tail. New host and locality records for both Litomosoides hamletti and L. chandleri in phyllostomid bats, and L. brasiliensis occurring in both phyllostomid and vespertilionid bats, are provided. The morphological variability of the specimens is documented by providing comparative …

One can use phenomenology, along with the usual tools of scholarship and analysis, to make the point that the promises of the 1960’s and 1970’s especially those of the women’s movement, have yet to bear significant fruit in the academy. Hence, for everybody’s non-thingly phenomenology of non-practice, a handy-dandy wiki-check on the net yields the claim that “U.S. Department of Education reports indicate that philosophy is one of the least proportionate, and possibly the least proportionate, fields in the humanities with respect to gender,” with a rather dismal addendum reporting that in “2004, the percentage of Ph.D.s in philosophy going …

Methods That Benefit Emergent Readers In Learning And Applying Sight Vocabulary In Context, Megan Mcelheran
Methods That Benefit Emergent Readers In Learning And Applying Sight Vocabulary In Context, Megan Mcelheran
Education Masters
Learning sight vocabulary is fundamental for all emergent readers as they are entering kindergarten and first grade. The question is what is the best way to go about teaching these words? This action research project looks at different methods of learning and applying sight words in context. The study’s methodology focused on observing two students using two strategies from the literature reviewed, the copy, cover, compare, and incremental rehearsal strategies, to determine application of newly taught words. The findings suggest that there were three reoccurring themes that were interrelated and interconnected: self-correcting, applying words in context, and self-reflection. This study …
Judging A Book By More Than Its Cover Examining The Influences On The Independent Reading Choices Of Middle School Students, Megan Bowen
Education Masters
This study examined the influences on the independent reading selections of adolescents in a rural middle school. Data was collected through student and teacher questionnaires, analyzing students’ independent book projects, and reviewing data from the school library. The findings showed that adolescents’ book choices are influenced by genre, subject interest, peer and adult recommendations, series books, and the cover. This research indicates that teachers should discover their students’ interests, have a wide selection of books in their classroom library, allow time during class for peer book discussions, and display books so that the covers are visible to create a positive …
Seasonal Carotenoid Variation In American Kestrels, Christeena H. Sevy, Julie A. Heath
Seasonal Carotenoid Variation In American Kestrels, Christeena H. Sevy, Julie A. Heath
IDeA Network for Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE)
Carotenoids are micronutrient pigments produced by plants that may convey immunological benefits to consumers. Animals with high levels of carotenoid intake may have improved health and higher survival. American Kestrels (Falco sparverius) from broods hatched early in the breeding season are more likely to survive and return to the breeding population than birds hatched later in the season. We hypothesized that breeding adults and nestlings may be affected by seasonal patterns in primary productivity that lead to changes in prey quality and availability; therefore affecting carotenoid intake. We collected blood samples from American Kestrels breeding in nestboxes south of Boise, …
The Marquette Hours: Production And Devotion, Sarah K. Rothmann
The Marquette Hours: Production And Devotion, Sarah K. Rothmann
Catalogues and Gallery Guides
Despite the ubiquitous nature of medieval Books of Hours, prayer books for the laity, each manuscript presents evidence about its production and reception. This thesis undertakes the study of a little known Book of Hours housed at the Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University. First, an analysis of the manuscript determined all the components of its production including the preparation of the pages, the assemblage, the script and the illumination. This process in concordance with the information provided by the museum, scholarly input, and heraldic evidence implied a fifteenth century provincial French production. Through formal, comparative, and iconographical analysis …

Finding My Feet: A Dance/Movement Therapy Intern's Heuristic Inquiry Of Clinician Self-Care, Megan J. Blazek
Creative Arts Therapies Theses
This study is a heuristic exploration of the internship experience of one dance/movement therapy intern and the search for effective self-care methods to assist in maintaining a sense of calm and stability, as well as a sense of focus during the final academic year of a dance/movement therapy master’s program. Themes of personal and emotional stressors such as premenstrual dysphoric disorder, balancing personal and a newly emerging professional life, fitting personal religion into a secular field, trying to find self-confidence in a new creative and therapeutic role, and determining how much self-care is too much are all discussed. Previous research …

Bmpa Is A Surface-Exposed Outer-Membrane Protein Of Borrelia Burgdorferi, Anton V. Bryksin, Alexandra Tomova, Henry P. Godfrey, Felipe C. Cabello
NYMC Faculty Publications
BmpA is an immunodominant protein of Borrelia burgdorferi as well as an arthritogenic factor. Rabbit antirecombinant BmpA (rBmpA) antibodies were raised, characterized by assaying their cross reactivity with rBmpB, rBmpC and rBmpD, and then rendered monospecific by absorption with rBmpB. This monospecific reagent reacted only with rBmpA in dot immunobinding and detected a single 39 kDa, pI 5.0, spot on two-dimensional immunoblots. It was used to assess the BmpA cellular location. BmpA was present in both detergent-soluble and -insoluble fractions of Triton X-114 phase-partitioned borrelial cells, suggesting that it was a membrane lipoprotein. Immunoblots of proteinase K-treated intact and Triton …

Kinematic Evidence For Superfast Locomotory Muscle In Two Species Of Teneriffiid Mites, Grace C. Wu, Jonathan C. Wright, Dwight L. Whitaker, Anna N. Ahn
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
Locomotory muscles typically operate over a narrow range of contraction frequencies, characterized by the predominant fiber types and functional roles. The highest documented frequencies in the synchronous sound-producing muscles of insects (550 Hz) and toadfish (200 Hz) far exceed the contraction frequencies observed in weight-bearing locomotory muscles, which have maximum documented frequencies below 15-30 Hz. Laws of scaling, however, predict that smaller arthropods may employ stride frequencies exceeding this range. In this study we measured running speed and stride frequency in two undescribed species of teneriffiid mites from the coastal sage scrub of southern California. Relative speeds of both species …

Sale Of Business Property, Guido Van Der Hoeven
Sale Of Business Property, Guido Van Der Hoeven
Rural Tax Education
During the course of operating a farm or ranch business, producers will dispose of property (e.g., livestock, equipment, real estate, etc.) used in the business. This can occur in a variety of ways with two common methods being sales of assets and trading (like-kind exchange) of property. The purpose of this fact sheet is to discuss and illustrate correct income tax reporting when business assets are sold.
This discussion also addresses, for income tax purposes, different types of business assets and their tax treatment upon selling them. One common example is the sale of cull breeding animals that were raised …
Farm, Farming And Who’S A Farmer For Tax Purposes, Guido Van Der Hoeven
Farm, Farming And Who’S A Farmer For Tax Purposes, Guido Van Der Hoeven
Rural Tax Education
Meeting the qualifications of farming and being a farmer under the Internal Revenue Code (IRC) allows for special benefits; however, not all agricultural producers meet these qualifications even if they are producing agricultural products, which is why it is vitally important for operators of farms and their tax professionals to understand the IRS tax definitions of farm, farming and farmer. One of the benefits of being classified as a farmer is the exclusion of certain receipts from income as in the case of conservation payments as allowed under IRC Section 175.
Operators of farming businesses may associate the term farmer …

Overexpression Of Amyloid Precursor Protein Induces Mitochondrial Oxidative Stress And Activates The Intrinsic Apoptosis Pathway, Matthew G. Bartley
Overexpression Of Amyloid Precursor Protein Induces Mitochondrial Oxidative Stress And Activates The Intrinsic Apoptosis Pathway, Matthew G. Bartley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Down syndrome (DS) is the most common genetic form of cognitive disability and is caused by trisomy of chromosome 21. Within chromosome 21 is the gene, amyloid precursor protein (APP). Proteolysis of APP into toxic and aggregate-prone, beta-amyloid fragments underlies the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Individuals with DS develop the neuropathology that can be diagnosed as AD; however, the role of APP overexpression in this comorbidity is presently unclear. Here, we elucidated the mechanism of cell death induced by overexpression of wild type APP. Chinese hamster ovary cells transfected with a DsRed-APP fusion construct displayed caspase-3 activation and nuclear …
Filmmaker, Lawyer, Indian Chief: The Negotiation Of Identity In An Indigenous Film Festival, William Lempert
Filmmaker, Lawyer, Indian Chief: The Negotiation Of Identity In An Indigenous Film Festival, William Lempert
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since colonial contact, indigenous peoples have been predominantly represented by community outsiders. As a result, native peoples have rarely had a primary, or even collaborative role, in the production of these representations. However, in the last two decades, there has been an unprecedented proliferation of indigenous created films and the festivals that feature them. The Denver Indigenous Arts and Film Festival is an annual festival that exclusively showcases films made by and with indigenous peoples. The festival’s 2009 theme of “Telling Our Stories” emphasized cultural control of representation and the transmission of traditional knowledge.
In this thesis, I show that …
Composing Music In Constrained Search Environments, Jeffrey Keene
Composing Music In Constrained Search Environments, Jeffrey Keene
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Composing music with computers in constrained search environments adds complexities and problems not present in the traditional problem domain of generative music. The traditional and well researched mechanisms of Markov chains, genetic algorithms and data driven rule based systems do not directly map to a problem domain in which pitch choice and rhythm choice are likely to be highly limited.
We therefore explore several possible solutions to generating rhythms in extremely constrained environments with the goal of generating music that adheres to user specified constraints and is aesthetically pleasing.

The Comic Apocalypse Of The Year Of The Flood, Hope Jennings
English Language and Literatures Faculty Publications
If one of the primary tensions in Margaret Atwood's work is between survival (for the individual or humanity as a whole) and "the question of whether survival is even merited," exemplified by the author's recurring interest in exploring the end of the world (Wilson 177), then Atwood has become one of contemporary literature's. most rigorous demythologizers of Apocalypse, while at the same .contributing to its tradition of prophetic warning.

Sierra Nevada Red Fox (Vulpes Vulpes Necator): A Conservation Assessment, John D. Perrine, Lori A. Campbell, Gregory A. Green
Biological Sciences
One goal of the Sierra Nevada Forest Plan Amendment (SNFPA) 2001 and 2004 Records of Decision was to protect and recover native Sierra Nevada red fox (Vulpes vulpes necator) populations in the Sierra Nevada (USDA Forest Service 2001 p. 14). To accomplish this goal, the ROD commits the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service to completing a conservation assessment for the Sierra Nevada red fox in cooperation with other federal, state, and local agencies, as well as Tribal governments. This conservation assessment synthesizes the best available scientific information and thought concerning habitat relationships, population status and trends, historical and …

Environment-Induced Phenotypic Plasticity In The Teeth Of Hatchery And Wild Largemouth Bass, Micropterus Floridanus, Tamilselvi Selvaraj
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Successful stock enhancement of hatchery-reared fish depends heavily on the release of individuals able to demonstrate strong survival skills. Overall survival of fishes is a reflection of a successful blend of physiology, anatomy, and behavior. With fishes being highly phenotypically plastic, the potential exists for all aspects of hatcheryreared fish to vary significantly from their wild counterparts while having potentially adverse effects on their survival after release. Previous analyses have demonstrated significant differences between the feeding behavior of hatchery-reared and wild caught largemouth bass (Micropterus floridanus) in the laboratory, as well as differences in the development of the …
Interactions Between Female Impersonators And Tipping Audience Members: Heteronormativity And Techniques, Leslie Marie Abell
Interactions Between Female Impersonators And Tipping Audience Members: Heteronormativity And Techniques, Leslie Marie Abell
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Academic interest in drag entertainers began in the late 1970s and has since been slowly growing. The literature has, thus, far largely examined entertainers’ life stories as well as whether drag reinforces or transgresses traditional gender roles. Little research has focused on the interactions between drag entertainers and their audiences. Based upon observational data and in-depth interview data, this study examines the tipping interactions that occur between an audience member and a drag entertainer during a drag show, positive and negative aspects of performing in drag, and rational techniques that entertainers use to encourage audience members to tip. In addition, …
