Role Of Ampk In The Upregulation Of Steroidogenic Acute Regulatory Protein In The Zona Fasciculata Of The Adrenal Cortex, Adam Wesley Dayton Aug 2010

Role Of Ampk In The Upregulation Of Steroidogenic Acute Regulatory Protein In The Zona Fasciculata Of The Adrenal Cortex, Adam Wesley Dayton

Theses and Dissertations

Cortisol is a glucocorticoid produced by the zona fasciculata (ZF) of the adrenal cortex. Traditionally, cortisol production and release was seen as being regulated strictly by adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). While this is true of baseline cortisol levels and in response to acute mental stress, the picture is somewhat more complicated in other situations.Interleukin-6 (IL-6) contributes to the maintenance of cortisol levels in situations of prolonged immune or inflammatory stress. AMP activated protein kinase (AMPK) was investigated as a possible mediator of the action of IL-6 or as an independent actor in raising cortisol levels in response to hypoxemic or hypoglycemic …

Image Processing Algorithms For Diagnostic Analysis Of Microcirculation, Sumeyra Ummuhan Demir Aug 2010

Image Processing Algorithms For Diagnostic Analysis Of Microcirculation, Sumeyra Ummuhan Demir

Theses and Dissertations

Microcirculation has become a key factor for the study and assessment of tissue perfusion and oxygenation. Detection and assessment of the microvasculature using videomicroscopy from the oral mucosa provides a metric on the density of blood vessels in each single frame. Information pertaining to the density of these microvessels within a field of view can be used to quantitatively monitor and assess the changes occurring in tissue oxygenation and perfusion over time. Automated analysis of this information can be used for real-time diagnostic and therapeutic planning of a number of clinical applications including resuscitation. The objective of this study is …

Invasive Predators Deplete Genetic Diversity Of Island Lizards, Amandine Gasc, M. C. Duryea, Robert M. Cox, Andrew Kern, Ryan Calsbeek Aug 2010

Invasive Predators Deplete Genetic Diversity Of Island Lizards, Amandine Gasc, M. C. Duryea, Robert M. Cox, Andrew Kern, Ryan Calsbeek

Dartmouth Scholarship

Invasive species can dramatically impact natural populations, especially those living on islands. Though numerous examples illustrate the ecological impact of invasive predators, no study has examined the genetic consequences for native populations subject to invasion. Here we capitalize on a natural experiment in which a long-term study of the brown anole lizard (Anolis sagrei) was interrupted by rat invasion. An island population that was devastated by rats recovered numerically following rat extermination. However, population genetic analyses at six microsatellite loci suggested a possible loss of genetic diversity due to invasion when compared to an uninvaded island studied over …

Sacroiliac Joint Biomechanics And Effects Of Fusion, Dinah Baria Aug 2010

Sacroiliac Joint Biomechanics And Effects Of Fusion, Dinah Baria

Open Access Dissertations

Lumbar spine fusion (LSF) is a common surgical procedure used in the treatment of lower back pain. Numerous studies have been conducted investigating the effects of LSF. Biomechanical studies have found that mechanical changes at adjacent joints create cumulative stress and pain, while clinical studies suggest that many patients develop symptomatic adjacent segmental disease (ASD) following LSF, which may necessitate additional surgery. Recently, ASD pain following LSF has been attributed to accelerated sacroiliac (SI) joint degeneration. Normal SI joints are mobile segments adjacent to the lumbosacral spine articulation and it has been hypothesized that altered biomechanics at the SI joints …

Radially Aligned, Electrospun Nanofibers As Dural Substitutes For Wound Closure And Tissue Regeneration Applications, Jingwei Xie, Matthew R. Macewan, Wilson Z. Ray, Wenying Liu, Daku Y. Siewe, Younan Xia

MIIR Faculty Research

This paper reports the fabrication of scaffolds consisting of radially aligned poly(ε-caprolactone) nanofibers by utilizing a collector composed of a central point electrode and a peripheral ring electrode. This novel class of scaffolds was able to present nanoscale topographic cues to cultured cells, directing and enhancing their migration from the periphery to the center. We also established that such scaffolds could induce faster cellular migration and population than nonwoven mats consisting of random nanofibers. Dural fibroblast cells cultured on these two types of scaffolds were found to express type I collagen, the main extracellular matrix component in dural mater. The …

Overview Of Learning Theories (Chapter 1 Of Faith-Based Education That Constructs), Debra S. Espinor Aug 2010

Overview Of Learning Theories (Chapter 1 Of Faith-Based Education That Constructs), Debra S. Espinor

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Virtually everyone would agree that the role of the school is to help students learn. The school, as an institution of education, must incorporate a sense of morality or values. This said, the methods of incorporating morality and values into education vary. This chapter explores three of the most common learning theories of the last fifty years: behaviorism, cognitivism, and constructivism. Each section will take a brief glance at the history, background, and definition of each of the theories. Then, the chapter will turn to the strengths and weaknesses of each of the theories, illuminating their role in supporting students' …

Variability In Avian Eggshell Colour: A Comparative Study Of Museum Eggshells, Phillip Cassey, Steven J. Portugal, Golo Maurer, John G. Ewen, Rebecca L. Boulton, Mark E. Hauber, Tim M. Blackburn Aug 2010

Variability In Avian Eggshell Colour: A Comparative Study Of Museum Eggshells, Phillip Cassey, Steven J. Portugal, Golo Maurer, John G. Ewen, Rebecca L. Boulton, Mark E. Hauber, Tim M. Blackburn

Publications and Research

Background The exceptional diversity of coloration found in avian eggshells has long fascinated biologists and inspired a broad range of adaptive hypotheses to explain its evolution. Three main impediments to understanding the variability of eggshell appearance are: (1) the reliable quantification of the variation in eggshell colours; (2) its perception by birds themselves, and (3) its relation to avian phylogeny. Here we use an extensive museum collection to address these problems directly, and to test how diversity in eggshell coloration is distributed among different phylogenetic levels of the class Aves. Methodology and Results Spectrophotometric data on eggshell coloration were collected …

Variable Palatability Of Quaking Aspen For Large Ungulate Herbivores, Patrice Alexa Nielson Aug 2010

Variable Palatability Of Quaking Aspen For Large Ungulate Herbivores, Patrice Alexa Nielson

Theses and Dissertations

Aspen is a key resource in the Rocky Mountain Region for wildlife forage and habitat, lumber products, scenery, and plays important roles in fire ecology and hydrological processes. There is evidence of aspen decline over much of the Intermountain West for approximately 100 years. In Dixie and Fishlake National Forests, UT, aspen distribution has decreased by nearly half. Causes of this decline are not well understood, although wildlife browsing by ungulates has been implicated as playing a major role. The objective of this research was to examine what soil or plant factors might be involved in wildlife browse choice in …

A Detailed Phylogenetic Analysis Of Fiv In The United States, Eric A. Weaver Aug 2010

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Background: Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a lentivirus associated with AIDS-like illnesses in cats and has been used as a model for the study of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). A feature of HIV and FIV infection is the continually increasing divergence among viral isolates between different individuals, as well as within the same individuals.

Methodology/Principal Findings: The goal of this study was to determine the phylogenetic patterns of viral isolates obtained within the United States (U.S.) by focusing on the variable, V3-V4, region of the FIV envelope gene.

Conclusions/Significance: Data indicate that FIV, from within the U.S., localize to four …

The Identity Of Zachaenus Roseus Cope, 1890 (Anura: Species Inquirenda), Esteban O. Lavilla, J. J. Nuñez, F. E. Rabanal, José A. Langone, Rafael O. De Sá Aug 2010

The Identity Of Zachaenus Roseus Cope, 1890 (Anura: Species Inquirenda), Esteban O. Lavilla, J. J. Nuñez, F. E. Rabanal, José A. Langone, Rafael O. De Sá

Biology Faculty Publications

Zachaenus roseus Cope, 1890, has puzzled systematists working in southern South America. A single individual, the holotype, has ever been collected and this specimen is in extremely poor preservation condition. Herein, the precise location of the type locality of Z. roseus is determined based on a historical review of the literature. Furthermore, following a careful comparison with all species that inhabit the southern austral forest, and that could potentially correspond to Zachaenus roseus, we conclude that this taxon is placed in the synonymy of Eupsophus calcaratus (Günther, 1881)

In Vivo Measurement Of Rat Skeletal Muscle Oxygen Consumption Following Brief Periods Of Ischemia With Reperfusion As Assessed By Phosphorescence Quenching Microscopy, William Nugent Aug 2010

In Vivo Measurement Of Rat Skeletal Muscle Oxygen Consumption Following Brief Periods Of Ischemia With Reperfusion As Assessed By Phosphorescence Quenching Microscopy, William Nugent

Theses and Dissertations

Brief periods of skeletal muscle ischemia (ischemic pre-conditioning) alter cellular metabolism in a way that confers protection over subsequent ischemic episodes. The mechanisms behind this effect have been studied indirectly through assays for the byproducts of ATP synthesis and in vitro studies of cellular signaling cascades and ROS generation. There have been no direct, in vivo assessments of the changes in respiration during reperfusion. We employed phosphorescence quenching microscopy in conjunction with a flow-arrest technique to assess the influences of external, pressure-induced 1- to 10-min focal ischemia on interstitial oxygenation (PISFO2) and the consumption of oxygen (VO2) in spinotrapezius muscles …

Beta Galactosidose Activity Of Commercial Lactase Samples In Raw And Pasteurized Milk At Refrigerated Temperatures, Trenton W. Horner Aug 2010

Beta Galactosidose Activity Of Commercial Lactase Samples In Raw And Pasteurized Milk At Refrigerated Temperatures, Trenton W. Horner

Theses and Dissertations

Many consumers are unable to enjoy the benefits of milk, due to lactose-intolerance. Lactose-free milk is available, but at about 2 times the cost of regular milk or greater, it may be difficult for consumers to afford. The high cost of lactose-free milk is in part due to the added cost of the lactose hydrolysis process. Hydrolysis at refrigerated temperatures, possibly in the bulk tank or package, could increase the flexibility of the process, and potentially reduce the cost. A rapid β-galactosidase assay was used to determine the relative activity of commercially available lactase samples at different temperatures. Four enzymes …

Oxidant stress influences many cellular processes, including cell growth, differentiation, and cell death. A well-recognized link between these processes and oxidant stress is via alterations in Ca(2+) signaling. However, precisely how oxidants influence Ca(2+) signaling remains unclear. Oxidant stress led to a phenotypic shift in Ca(2+) mobilization from an oscillatory to a sustained elevated pattern via calcium release-activated calcium (CRAC)-mediated capacitive Ca(2+) entry, and stromal interaction molecule 1 (STIM1)- and Orai1-deficient cells are resistant to oxidant stress. Functionally, oxidant-induced Ca(2+) entry alters mitochondrial Ca(2+) handling and bioenergetics and triggers cell death. STIM1 is S-glutathionylated at cysteine 56 in response to …

Canopy Disturbance And Reproduction In Cornus Florida L., Daniel Carr Aug 2010

Canopy Disturbance And Reproduction In Cornus Florida L., Daniel Carr

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined aspects of local reproductive variation in the flowering dogwood (Cornus florida L.) coincident with recent differences in primary canopy architecture. The dogwood trees in this study were impacted by a hurricane that created numerous treefall gaps, which created fine scale heterogeneity in the primary canopy. Fine scale disturbances in a forest can result in changes for multiple members of the forest community, including the reproductive responses of the trees and interspecific pollination mutualisms. Previously determined differences in offspring genetic structure suggested that pollen movement among genetically unstructured maternal individuals was significantly impacted between open, or disturbed, canopy …

A Mechanistic Study Of Strain Rate Sensitivity And High Rate Property Of Tendon, John Steeneck Clemmer Aug 2010

A Mechanistic Study Of Strain Rate Sensitivity And High Rate Property Of Tendon, John Steeneck Clemmer

Theses and Dissertations

The ultrastructural mechanism for strain rate sensitivity of collagenous tissue has not been well studied at the collagen fibril level. The objective is to reveal the mechanistic contribution of the collagen fibril to strain rate sensitivity. Collagen fibrils underwent significantly greater fibril strain relative to global tissue strain at higher strain rates. A better understanding of tendon mechanisms at lower hierarchical levels would help establish a basis for future development of constitutive models and assist in tissue replacement design. High rate mechanical property of tendon was also studied. Tendon was compressed under high strain rate (550 /s) using a polycarbonate …

Characterization Of The Occ Gene Cluster Required For The Production Of Antifungal Compound Occidiofungion In Burkholderia Contaminans Strain Ms14, Ganyu Gu Aug 2010

Characterization Of The Occ Gene Cluster Required For The Production Of Antifungal Compound Occidiofungion In Burkholderia Contaminans Strain Ms14, Ganyu Gu

Theses and Dissertations

Strain MS14, exhibiting antifungal activity, was classified to belong to Burkholderia contaminans. Occidiofungin produced by strain MS14 is an octapeptide dedicated to a broad range of antifungal activities of the bacterium. The 58.2-kb genomic fragment containing 18 open reading frames (ORFs), named occidiofungin (occ) gene cluster, is required for occidiofungin production. Putative proteins encoded by five nonribosomal peptide synthetase genes (occA – occE) of the gene cluster were predicted to contain the catalytic modules responsible for the biosynthesis of occidiofungin. Transcription of all the ORFs identified in the region except ORF1 and ORF16 was regulated by both ambR1 and ambR2, …

An Applied Investigation Of Kenaf-Based Fiber/Polymer Composites As Potential Lightweight Materials For Automotive Components, Yicheng Du Aug 2010

An Applied Investigation Of Kenaf-Based Fiber/Polymer Composites As Potential Lightweight Materials For Automotive Components, Yicheng Du

Theses and Dissertations

Natural fibers have the potential to replace glass fibers in fiber-reinforced composite applications. However, the natural fibers’ intrinsic properties cause these issues: 1) the mechanical property variation; 2) moisture uptake by natural fibers and their composites; 3) lack of sound, cost-effective, environmentriendly fiber-matrix compounding processes; 4) incompatibility between natural fibers and polymer matrices; and 5) low heat-resistance of natural fibers and their composites. This dissertation systematically studied the use of kenaf bast fiber bundles, obtained via a mechanical retting method, as a light-weight reinforcement material for fiber-reinforced thermoset polymer composites for automotive applications. Kenaf bast fiber bundle tensile properties were …

Accuracy Of Estimating Age And Antler Size Of Photographed Deer, Jeremy J. Flinn Aug 2010

Accuracy Of Estimating Age And Antler Size Of Photographed Deer, Jeremy J. Flinn

Theses and Dissertations

Objective and accurate techniques are needed to estimate age and antler size of live white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), because these parameters are essential to many white-tailed deer management strategies. I developed and evaluated accuracy of methods for estimating age and antler size from photographs of live, male white-tailed deer using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). I estimated size of photographed, known-score mounted antlers accurately using a fixed-scale object and photographed, live deer using anatomical features. I determined if a series of morphometric ratios could be used to predict age of deer from photographs using a dichotomous key procedure. Mean percentage error …

Design And Analysis Of Static Windrow Piles For In-House Broiler Litter Composting, Amy M. Schmidt Aug 2010

Design And Analysis Of Static Windrow Piles For In-House Broiler Litter Composting, Amy M. Schmidt

Theses and Dissertations

In-house windrow composting of broiler litter has been studied to reduce microbial populations between flocks. Published time-temperature goals are used to determine the success of the composting process for microbial reductions. Spatial and temporal density of temperature measurement can influence the ability to determine what portion of a windrow pile has achieved specified time-temperature goals. Based on this motivation, an investigation of the heating profile in windrowed litter and the identification of the effects of spatial and temporal sampling densities on the prediction of the heating profile in windrowed broiler litter were executed. Likewise, an investigation of the effects of …

Characterization Of Arabidopsis Thaliana Mutants Lacking A Jumonji Domain Containing Histone Demethylase And A Set Domain Containing Histone Methyl Transferase, Swetha Mamidi Reddy Aug 2010

Characterization Of Arabidopsis Thaliana Mutants Lacking A Jumonji Domain Containing Histone Demethylase And A Set Domain Containing Histone Methyl Transferase, Swetha Mamidi Reddy

Theses and Dissertations

Condensation of chromatin and alteration of chemical groups in the proteins around which the DNA is wrapped play major role in regulation of transcription. Histones are basic proteins rich in arginine and lysine residues which form the nucleosomal core. Histone modifications like acetylation, methylation, phosphorylation, etc. have broadened the horizon for researchers to study epigenetics more in detail. Histone methyl transferases and histone demethyl transferases are enzymes which add or remove methyl groups on histone lysine and arginine residues respectively. In this study a jumonji domain containing putative histone demethyltransferase has been shown to be responsible in controlling flowering phenotype …
