Morphological Study Of Emulsion-Assisted Cholesterol Precipitation Processes, Vuk Uskoković Sep 2010

Morphological Study Of Emulsion-Assisted Cholesterol Precipitation Processes, Vuk Uskoković

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Crystallization of cholesterol in chemical conditions that involve the presence of emulsions of three different types of surface active agents—cationic, anionic, and nonionic—was investigated by means of scanning and transmission electron microscopic analyses. In contrast with the previous attempts to modify the typical plate- and needle-shaped character of biaxially grown cholesterol crystals, the present study indicates that spherical templates of fine emulsion droplets may impose spherical morphologies to cholesterol particles nucleated within.

Imagined Rights Without Remedy: The Politics Of Novel Legal Claims, Geroge Lovell Sep 2010

Imagined Rights Without Remedy: The Politics Of Novel Legal Claims, Geroge Lovell

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Remedies for civil rights violations are only practically available where government officials choose to empower institutions that can protect those rights. When the Civil Rights Section (CRS) of the U.S. Department of Justice was formed in 1939, almost no federal civil rights law or institutional capacity existed to protect civil rights. This Article uses citizens' letters to the CRS to explore the politics of the CRS's limited and experimental strategy of using litigation to expand federal civil rights protections. Although the scope of civil rights law has expanded greatly since the inception of the CRS, the CRS experience may still …

Essay: Can Human Rights Practice Be A Critical Project - A View From The Ground, Lucie White, Jeremy Perelman Sep 2010

Essay: Can Human Rights Practice Be A Critical Project - A View From The Ground, Lucie White, Jeremy Perelman

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Critics have condemned human rights advocacy as being a deeply problematic solution to the sub-subsistence poverty that plagues the post-colonial Global South. This Essay discusses the efforts of four economic and social rights advocates working in Africa. Each succeeded by working within, but unconfined by, the approaches of the traditional human rights advocacy framework. The innovative strategies the advocates deployed may promote progressive institutional innovation in the provision of social welfare benefits. Still, single instances of innovation may not have an enduring impact on either extreme poverty or global inequality, the problems facing the Global South.

Dialectic Of Injury And Remedy, Marc Galanter Sep 2010

Dialectic Of Injury And Remedy, Marc Galanter

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

We are here to discuss injuries without remedies. I want to begin the discussion by considering the very complex relations between these two notions. My argument is: (1) Each is a cultural construction-but no less real for that. Both injury and remedy can, at a given moment in a given society, be regarded as positive and measurable. But if we step back, extend our time horizon, and widen our view beyond a given legal system, we see (a) that these notions are inextricably bound up not only with theories of justice but also with images of personal wholeness and social …

Body Polluted: Questions Of Scale, Gender, And Remedy, Dayna Nadine Scott Sep 2010

Body Polluted: Questions Of Scale, Gender, And Remedy, Dayna Nadine Scott

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

This Article offers a critique of tort remedies grounded in feminist theory of the body. It demonstrates how tort law is invested in a notion of an individuated legal subject, which fails to capture the critical interconnectedness of bodies in a social, political, historical, and colonial context. Taking the "injury" of endocrine disruption in a Canadian Aboriginal community as an example of a contemporary pollution harm, the analysis considers various torts on a conceptual level, and what they might offer the Aamjiwnaang First Nation in the way of remedies. In each case, what the tort can do depends on how …

Fear Of Cancer, S. Lochlann Jain Sep 2010

Fear Of Cancer, S. Lochlann Jain

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

While the cancer rate and related statistics remain remarkably high, people rarely consider the actual suffering of people living with and dying from cancer as the real sacrifice for, and structural result of, the everyday use of carcinogens such as those in gasoline, pesticides, and cosmetics. On the heels of the recently published President's Cancer Panel Report, "Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk: What We Can Do Now," this Article aims to better understand why "fear of cancer" litigation has failed to accomplish its intended purpose-to distribute the costs of known and potentially toxic chemicals-and examines how the relevant law justifies this …

Deregulation Pas De Deux: Dual Regulatory Classes Of Financial Institutions And The Path To Financial Crisis In Sweden And The United States, Erik F. Gerding Sep 2010

Deregulation Pas De Deux: Dual Regulatory Classes Of Financial Institutions And The Path To Financial Crisis In Sweden And The United States, Erik F. Gerding

Faculty Scholarship

This article presents the following model of two regulatory classes of financial institutions interacting in financial and political markets to spur deregulation and riskier lending and investment, which in turn contributes to the severity of a financial crisis: 1) Regulation creates two categories of financial institutions. The first class faces greater restrictions in lending or investment activities but enjoys regulatory subsidies, such as an explicit or implicit government guarantee, while the second class is more loosely regulated and can make riskier loans or investments and earn additional profits. 2) These additional profits leads to calls for deregulation to enable the …

Hawk Eyes Ii: Diurnal Raptors Differ In Head Movement Strategies When Scanning From Perches, Colleen T. O'Rourke, Todd Pitlik, Melissa Mae Hoover, Esteban Fernández-Juricic Sep 2010

Hawk Eyes Ii: Diurnal Raptors Differ In Head Movement Strategies When Scanning From Perches, Colleen T. O'Rourke, Todd Pitlik, Melissa Mae Hoover, Esteban Fernández-Juricic

Department of Animal Sciences Faculty Publications

Background

Relatively little is known about the degree of inter-specific variability in visual scanning strategies in species with laterally placed eyes (e.g., birds). This is relevant because many species detect prey while perching; therefore, head movement behavior may be an indicator of prey detection rate, a central parameter in foraging models. We studied head movement strategies in three diurnal raptors belonging to the Accipitridae and Falconidae families.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We used behavioral recording of individuals under field and captive conditions to calculate the rate of two types of head movements and the interval between consecutive head movements. Cooper's Hawks had …

Assault And Battery On Property, Gowri Ramachandran Sep 2010

Assault And Battery On Property, Gowri Ramachandran

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Both criminal and tort law seek, in part, to respond to the harm inflicted on persons' organic, human, continuous bodies, through hitting, offensive groping, rape, stabbing, gunshots, vehicular homicide, and more. But could there be such a thing as assault and battery on a person's inorganic, non-human, discontinuous body? A battery on one's prosthetic arm, on one's wheelchair, on one's cochlear implant? Even a battery on one's iPhone or computer, which some users have provocatively begun to call an "exobrain"? This Article investigates whether there is any use in employing metaphors such as "exobrain," "battery on a wheelchair," and the …

Redefining Commonality For Consumer Class Actions Under California Business And Professions Code Sections 17200 And 17500, Roxana Mehrfar

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

This Note explores California's Unfair Competition Law and critiques how courts have applied the commonality requirement for class certification of Unfair Competition Law claims. In particular, this Note considers the Unfair Competition Law in light of the combined effects of Proposition 64's standing requirements and the California Supreme Court's decision in In re Tobacco II Cases, which limited the scope of Proposition 64. This Note also provides a general background of the liability standards for each prong of the Unfair Competition Law, examines the federal preemption defense, and proposes a new standard for commonality.

An Informal Analysis Of Career And Technical Student Organization Competitive Event Competencies Via Kolb’S Experiential Learning Theory, Mark D. Threeton, John C. Ewing, Robert W. Clark

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

In an effort to provide Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) advisors with additional insight on enhancing the educational experience for students, this paper examined the national contest competencies of the Health Occupations Society of America (HOSA) Veterinary Assisting Career Development Event, the national FFA Organization Floriculture Career Development Event and the SkillsUSA Automotive Service Technology Career Development Event to determine if potential exists for a holistic approach to competition preparation via the alignment with the four modes of Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle. The results indicated that preparation for competitive events in each of the respective CTSOs lend themselves to …

Teaching Calculus With Wolfram Alpha, Andrew Lang Sep 2010

Teaching Calculus With Wolfram Alpha, Andrew Lang

College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship

This article describes the benefits and drawbacks of using Wolfram|Alpha as the platform for teaching calculus concepts in the lab setting. It is a result of our experiences designing and creating an entirely new set of labs using Wolfram|Alpha. We present the reasoning behind our transition from using a standard computer algebra system (CAS) to Wolfram|Alpha in our differential and integral calculus labs, together with the positive results from our experience. We also discuss the current limitations of Wolfram|Alpha, including a discussion on why we still use a CAS for our multivariate calculus labs.

Biological Computation, Melanie Mitchell Sep 2010

Biological Computation, Melanie Mitchell

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this article, the term biological computation refers to the proposal that living organisms themselves perform computations, and, more specifically, that the abstract ideas of information and computation may be key to understanding biology in a more unified manner. It is important to point out that the study of biological computation is typically not the focus of the field of computational biology, which applies computing tools to the solution of specific biological problems. Likewise, biological computation is distinct from the field of biologically-inspired computing, which borrows ideas from biological systems such as the brain, insect colonies, and the immune system …

Cftr From Divergent Species Respond Differently To The Channel Inhibitors Cftrinh-172, Glibenclamide, And Glyh-101, Marie Suzy Bewley Sep 2010

Cftr From Divergent Species Respond Differently To The Channel Inhibitors Cftrinh-172, Glibenclamide, And Glyh-101, Marie Suzy Bewley

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Studies of widely diverse species of a protein are a powerful tool to gain information on the structure and function of the protein. We investigated the response of human, pig, shark and killifish cystic fibrosis trans-membrane conductance regulator (CFTR) to specific inhibitors of the channel: CFTRinh-172, GlyH-101, and glibenclamide. In several expression systems, including isolated perfusions of the rectal gland, primary cell cultures of rectal gland tubules and oocyte expression, we observed fundamental differences in the sensitivity to inhibition by these CFTR blockers. We used primarily two-electrode voltage clamping of cRNA microinjected Xenopus laevis oocytes. In oocyte studies, shark CFTR …

Ictal Functional Neuroimaging Of Childhood Absence Epilepsy, Matthew Vestal Sep 2010

Ictal Functional Neuroimaging Of Childhood Absence Epilepsy, Matthew Vestal

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Absence seizures in Childhood Absence Epilepsy (CAE) are 5 10 second episodes of impaired consciousness that are characterized on electroencephalography (EEG) by frontally-predominant, 3 4 Hz spike and wave discharges (SWD). The aims of this study were to use simultaneous EEG, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and behavioral testing to identify the neural networks involved in absence seizures as well as to examine the timecourse of those ictal fMRI changes. It was hypothesized that absence seizures involve wide-reaching neural networks including the areas traditionally associated with normal attention processing and that absence seizures produce fMRI signal changes not only during …

The purpose of this study was to better understand why African American males struggle to obtain a four-year college degree. A secondary purpose was to analyze the Black male college students' perceptions of success in college and the roles educational leaders played in their attendance and achievement in college. This study also looked at the behavior of the African American males in college. Purposive sampling was used to select participants. Selection criteria included male, African American undergraduate and graduate students attending Rowan University during the 2009/2010 academic year who were student leaders, and doing well in the classroom. Also, selected …
