Song Divergence By Sensory Drive In Amazonian Birds, Joseph A. Tobias, Job Aben, Robb T. Brumfield, Elizabeth P. Derryberry, Wouter Halfwerk, Hans Slabbekoorn, Nathalie Seddon

Faculty Publications

Visual signals are shaped by variation in the signaling environment through a process termed sensory drive, sometimes leading to speciation. However, the evidence for sensory drive in acoustic signals is restricted to comparisons between highly dissimilar habitats, or single-species studies in which it is difficult to rule out the influence of undetected ecological variables, pleiotropic effects, or chance. Here we assess whether this form of sensory drive-often termed " acoustic adaptation" -can generate signal divergence across ecological gradients. By studying avian communities in two Amazonian forest types, we show that songs of 17 " bamboo-specialist" bird species differ in predictable …

Evaluation Of Cryoprotectant And Cooling Rate For Sperm Cryopreservation In The Euryhaline Fish Medaka Oryzias Latipes, Huiping Yang, Michelle Norris, Richard Winn, Terrence R. Tiersch Oct 2010

Evaluation Of Cryoprotectant And Cooling Rate For Sperm Cryopreservation In The Euryhaline Fish Medaka Oryzias Latipes, Huiping Yang, Michelle Norris, Richard Winn, Terrence R. Tiersch

Faculty Publications

Medaka Oryzias latipes is a well-recognized biomedical fish model because of advantageous features such as small body size, transparency of embryos, and established techniques for gene knockout and modification. The goal of this study was to evaluate two critical factors, cryoprotectant and cooling rate, for sperm cryopreservation in 0.25-ml French straws. The objectives were to: (1) evaluate the acute toxicity of methanol, 2-methoxyethanol (ME), dimethyl sulfoxide (Me2SO), N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA), N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF), and glycerol with concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15% for 60min of incubation at 4°C; (2) evaluate cooling rates from 5 to 25°C/min for freezing and their interaction …

This review, which represents a summarization of research results generated during an approximately 22-yr period, involves preweaning, postweaning, and carcass trait comparisons of progeny sired by Bos indicus (Brahman, Boran, Nellore, Indu-Brazil, Gir, Sahiwal), B. indicus-derivative (Brangus, Beefmaster, Santa Gertrudis, Gelbray, Simbrah), non-B. indicus (Tuli, Romosinuano, Bonsmara, Senepol) subtropically adapted, and traditional Bos taurus (Angus, Hereford, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Red Poll) sire breeds. Relative to Brahman-sired progeny, preweaning (weaning weight) and postweaning (postweaning ADG, feedlot ADG, final feedlot BW) performance is expected to be less for progeny sired by non-B. indicus subtropically adapted sire breeds. The non-B. indicus subtropically adapted sire …

Frames Of Injustice: The Bias We Overlook, Adam Benforado Oct 2010

Frames Of Injustice: The Bias We Overlook, Adam Benforado

Indiana Law Journal

The Cultural Cognition Project (CCP) at Yale Law School and the Project on Law and Mind Sciences (PLMS) at Harvard Law School draw on similar research and share a similar goal of uncovering the dynamics that shape risk perceptions, policy beliefs, and attributions underlying our laws and legal theories. Nonetheless, the projects have failed to engage one another in a substantial way. This Article attempts to bridge that gap by demonstrating how the approach taken by PLMS scholars can crucially enrich CCP scholarship. As a demonstration, this Article engages the case of Scott v. Harris, 550 US. 372 (2007), the …

Dialogic Fluency - Why It Matters, Dermot Campbell, Yi Wang, Marty Meinardi, Bunny Richardson, Ciaran Mcdonnell, Charles Pritchard Oct 2010

Dialogic Fluency - Why It Matters, Dermot Campbell, Yi Wang, Marty Meinardi, Bunny Richardson, Ciaran Mcdonnell, Charles Pritchard

Conference papers

Speech as an LSP: Many dialogues presented to language learners could be better described as ‘interleaved mini-monologues’, their purpose being to provide examples of grammatical sentences in realistic settings. Real dialogues, on the other hand, are worked out ‘live’, with neither speaker knowing in detail where the conversation will lead. Speaker interaction is marked to a large extent by prosody and often even good communicators sound disfluent if their half of the dialogue is judged in isolation. Dialogic fluency: The objective of dialoguing L1 speakers, however, is to realise a social or personal goal, with language only part of effective …

A New Perspective On Late Holocene Social Interaction In Northwest Alaska: Results Of A Preliminary Ceramic Sourcing Study, Shelby L. Anderson, Matthew T. Boulanger, Michael D. Glascock

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This research examines the evidence for prehistoric ceramic exchange networks over the last 2000 years in northwest Alaska through the use of neutron activation analysis of ceramic artifacts. Results from ceramic analysis on eight coastal and inland archaeological sites identified three source macrogroups and three associated subgroups. Clay source diversity and shared source macrogroups between geographically distant sites suggest the use of multiple sources and/or the movement of pots between production locales, mirroring related patterns in pottery stylistic data. Although additional analytical work is needed to fully understand the changing character of clay procurement and ceramic distribution across this time …

"Why Rebottle The Genie?": Capitalizing On Closure In Death Penalty Proceedings, Jody L. Madeira Oct 2010

"Why Rebottle The Genie?": Capitalizing On Closure In Death Penalty Proceedings, Jody L. Madeira

Indiana Law Journal

Closure, though a term with great rhetorical force in the capital punishment context, has to date evaded systematic analysis, instead becoming embroiled in ideological controversy. For victims who have rubbed the rights lamp for years, inclusion in capital proceedings and accompanying closure opportunities are perceived as a force with the potential to grant wishes of peace and finality. Scholars, however, argue for rebottling the closure genie lest closure itself prove false or its pursuit violate a defendant's constitutional rights. In order to effectively appraise the relationship of closure to criminal jurisprudence, however, and thus to decide whether and to what …

The Risks And Rewards Of Doing Business In Brazil: Can Brazil Escape The Fate Of Greece?, Andy Bertsch, James Ondracek

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

"With the abandonment of import-substitution policies and state-led development, Brazil has undergone major transformations and today is seen as one of the 21st Century’s major markets. Moreover, its economy is expected to weather the current economic crisis better than the economies of most nations. The outlook for Brazil as an investment opportunity is mixed as the country faces serious problems including HIV/AIDS, racial inequality, access to quality education, disparate distribution of wealth, high unemployment, and crime. Investors must weigh salient issues such as human rights, ethics, culture, access to knowledge workers, foreign trade restrictions, financial markets, and the political economy …

Marine Plankton Phenology And Life History In A Changing Climate: Current Research And Future Directions, R Ji, M Edwards, Dl Mackas, Ja Runge, Ac Thomas

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Increasing availability and extent of biological ocean time series (from both in situ and satellite data) have helped reveal significant phenological variability of marine plankton. The extent to which the range of this variability is modified as a result of climate change is of obvious importance. Here we summarize recent research results on phenology of both phytoplankton and zooplankton. We suggest directions to better quantify and monitor future plankton phenology shifts, including (i) examining the main mode of expected future changes (ecological shifts in timing and spatial distribution to accommodate fixed environmental niches vs. evolutionary adaptation of timing controls to …

Increasing The Visibility Of The Library Within The Academic Research Enterprise, Annette M. Healy

Library Scholarly Publications

Academic libraries support their universities' goals of developing and maintaining successful research programs. As the information landscape and researcher practices change, recognition of the library's role in supporting research may be diminishing. This article will explore some aspects of the academic research enterprise and identify opportunities libraries can use to position themselves as key members of the research enterprise as well as increase their visibility among the research community. Successful initiatives implemented at Wayne State University will be highlighted to illustrate strategies librarians can use at their own institutions.
