Surface Morphology Of Platelet Adhesion Influenced By Activators, Inhibitors And Shear Stress, Melanie Groan Watson
Surface Morphology Of Platelet Adhesion Influenced By Activators, Inhibitors And Shear Stress, Melanie Groan Watson
Doctoral Dissertations
Platelet activation involves multiple events, one of which is the generation and release of nitric oxide (NO), a platelet aggregation inhibitor. Platelets simultaneously send and receive various agents that promote a positive and negative feedback control system during hemostasis. Although the purpose of platelet-derived NO is not fully understood, NO is known to inhibit platelet recruitment. NO's relatively large diffusion coefficient allows it to diffuse more rapidly than platelet agonists. It may thus be able to inhibit recruitment of platelets near the periphery of a growing thrombus before agonists have substantially accumulated in those regions.

Toxicity Of Transition Metal Oxide Nanoparticles: Recent Insights From In Vitro Studies, Yue-Wern Huang, Chi-Heng Wu, Robert Aronstam
Toxicity Of Transition Metal Oxide Nanoparticles: Recent Insights From In Vitro Studies, Yue-Wern Huang, Chi-Heng Wu, Robert Aronstam
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
Nanotechnology has evolved to play a prominent role in our economy. Increased use of nanomaterials poses potential human health risk. It is therefore critical to understand the nature and origin of the toxicity imposed by nanomaterials (nanotoxicity). In this article we review the toxicity of the transition metal oxides in the 4th period that are widely used in industry and biotechnology. Nanoparticle toxicity is compellingly related to oxidative stress and alteration of calcium homeostasis, gene expression, pro-inflammatory responses, and cellular signaling events. The precise physicochemical properties that dictate the toxicity of nanoparticles have yet to be defined, but may include …
Thinking On The Edge: Heidegger, Derrida, And The Daoist Gateway (Men), Steven Burik
Thinking On The Edge: Heidegger, Derrida, And The Daoist Gateway (Men), Steven Burik
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Steven Bunk Many philosophical interpretations of the Daoist classics have proceeded, or continue to proceed, to read into these works the quest for a transcendental, foundational principle, a permanent moment of rest beyond the turmoil of everchanging things. The metaphysics that may be understood to be at work in such interpretations is what Heidegger and Derrida have called philosophy as ontotheology. It is argued here that Heidegger, Derrida, and the classical Daoists are better understood not so much as metaphysical and essentialist thinkers but as advocates of a profoundly inner-worldly way of thinking. In arguing for such a different approach, …

“From Where I Sit”: Filipino Youth, Sexuality And Immigration In Participatory Action Research, Valerie Francisco
“From Where I Sit”: Filipino Youth, Sexuality And Immigration In Participatory Action Research, Valerie Francisco
Faculty Publications, Sociology
Studies of young people's experiences of sexuality rarely discuss how immigration and settlement impact youths' understanding of their bodies, sexual identities, and knowledge. In this paper, Filipino youth in collaboration with adult allies, conducted a New York City-based participatory action research project and found that young people's experiences and understanding of sexuality are narrated by silences, solidarity and paradoxical spaces. This study explores the contradictory experiences of passivity and subjectivity in the sexual lives of young people. Lastly, as an adult collaborator on the project I assess how “participation” as a logic of inquiry allows for youth and adult collaborators …

Developing The Sacred: Local & Global Bikas In The Nepali Bhotkhola, Clayton Andrew Roger Hawkins Lewis
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of bikas on community and culture. Research was conducted from 9-30 November 2010 in the Bhotia village Chyamtang in the Sankhuwasabha district of Northeastern Nepal. The forms of development observed at the site are separated into local bikas and global bikas, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Research focused on a two-year old development project initiated by The Mountain Institute (TMI) using medicinal plant cultivation and community participation. Methods for studying Bhotia culture and development took the form of interviews with local healers, religious figures, farmers, and TMI …
The Admissibility Of Electronic Business Records, Ken Chasse
The Admissibility Of Electronic Business Records, Ken Chasse
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
The business record provisions of the Evidence Acts determine a record’s admissibility by evidence of its history, which must be the product of “the usual and ordinary course of business” (or comparable “business activity” wording). The electronic record provisions determine a record’s admissibility by the, “integrity of the electronic records system in which it is recorded or stored.” The difference is, records management (RM) based on “paper records concepts” versus “electronic records systems concepts.” The former is subjective — each business determines its own “usual and ordinary course of business”; the latter, objective — in accor- dance with authoritative standards …

A Study Of Corallivores Of Bawe And Chumbe Islands, Zanzibar, Rachael Mallon
A Study Of Corallivores Of Bawe And Chumbe Islands, Zanzibar, Rachael Mallon
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Coral reefs are considered keystone ecosystems due to their socioeconomic, ecological, and educational value. In Zanzibar, Tanzania, reefs provide income and a protein source for large portions of the population. Fish are reliant upon reefs as grounds for feeding, breeding, and nursing. Reefs are related to mangrove and seagrass ecosystems; the three ecosystems are interconnected in their functions of protecting biodiversity of coastal organisms, coastal erosion, and improving water quality. Coral reefs are also subject to degradation by both anthropogenic and natural causes. Predation is one example of natural degradation of coral. Six species of corallivores were studied to compare …
Guano Exploitation In Madagascar, Christina Buliga
Guano Exploitation In Madagascar, Christina Buliga
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Agriculture in Madagascar continues to remain largely undeveloped. Out of the eighty percent of Malagasy individuals that live in rural areas an overwhelming sixty five percent practice subsistence agriculture. With respect to the country as a whole this means that out of Madagascar's 58.2 million hectares of available land only 5.2 percent (3 million hectares) are farmed. And out of these 3 million hectares only 67% are cultivated permanently and only 11% are fertilized.
While there are several reasons for why Madagascar’s agriculture has remained largely undeveloped and for why Madagascar continues to rely on imported crops to meet its …

Caterpillar Fungus Of The Tibetan Plateau, Lucas Crouch
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Chongcao is a traditional Chinese medicine that can only be found on the Tibetan plateau. It is the result of a parasitic relationship between the Ghost moth Larva and the fungus Cordyceps Sinensis. Chongcao is highly prized among the Chinese as a medicine and the value is reflected in the market. The price of Chongcao increased by 900% between the years 1997 and 2008 (Winkler, 2010). In 2009 the market went down a slightly due to the 2008 financial crises but the price in 2010 recovered to 2008 levels. It is currently worth twice its weight in gold. (LA Times) …

Persecution Of Religious Minorities In Samoa: The Bahá’Ís Struggle To Face A Common Problem, Zoe Bryan
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The aim of this research is to determine the prevalence of religious persecution and examine how minority religions, particularly within the Bahá‟í Faith, have experienced it in Samoa. Case studies from the Bahá‟í and research looking at prominent stories of persecution will demonstrate the overarching problem that a lack of religious freedom presents in Samoa for minority religions. Understanding Samoans‟ perceptions of religious persecution will be gleaned from the survey portion of the research. Finally, the paper will yield some ideas for improvement in looking at the future of the Bahá‟í Faith and religious freedom in Samoa. In addition to …
