Regional Differences In Migratory Activity By Hatchling Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta Caretta), Jeffrey Guertin
Regional Differences In Migratory Activity By Hatchling Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta Caretta), Jeffrey Guertin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
There are four distinct subpopulations of loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) in Florida as determined behaviorally by geographic fidelity, and genetically by mitochondrial haplotypes. The South Florida subpopulation consists of females nesting on the southeastern and southwestern coasts of Florida and their offspring. Previous research shows that west coast hatchlings exhibit higher levels of nocturnal swimming during the postfrenzy period than east coast hatchlings. This study attempted to determine how these differences in migratory behavior develop. A reciprocal translocation experiment was conducted to distinguish between environmental and genetic factors. No consistent differences in hatchling swimming behavior were seen based on …
Remembering The Future: Individual Differences In Metacognitive Representation Predict Prospective Memory Performance On Time-Baseed [Sic] And Event-Based Tasks In Early Childhood, Kayla B. Causey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Prospective memory is remembering to perform an action in the future, such as attending a meeting (a time-based task) or picking up milk at the gas station (an eventbased task), and is crucial to achieving goal-directed activities in everyday life. Children who fail to develop prospective memory abilities are likely to experience difficulties interacting with parents, teachers, and peers. To date, research on prospective memory development has been primarily descriptive or focused on underlying executive functioning. This dissertation investigated the developmental relationship between metacognitive representation and prospective memory in preschool and elementary school children and adults. Findings from Study 1 …
Retrospective Analysis Of Sea Turtle Nest Depredation Patterns At Canaveral National Seashore, Florida, Rachel. Welicky
Retrospective Analysis Of Sea Turtle Nest Depredation Patterns At Canaveral National Seashore, Florida, Rachel. Welicky
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Nest predation can significantly reduce hatchling recruitment in sea turtle populations. This study uses 20 years of data from Canaveral National Seashore, Florida, which has pristine and altered beaches. Chi-square tests were used to determine if secondary predation events were related to the nest's primary depredation event. To determine if human beach use and nest predation are spatially or temporally linked, we ranked human beach use and examined predation frequency across all screened and marked nests (n=40,441). Lastly, I quantified nest predation risk spatially and temporally. I found that primary predation increases the chance of a nest suffering subsequent predation. …
Risk Of Sperm Competition Moderatres Men's Relationship Satisfaction And Interest In Their Partner's Copulatory Orgasm, Vincent M. Bates
Risk Of Sperm Competition Moderatres Men's Relationship Satisfaction And Interest In Their Partner's Copulatory Orgasm, Vincent M. Bates
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Sperm competition occurs when the sperm of multiple males concurrently occupy a female's reproductive tract and compete for fertilization. Sperm competition may have been a recurrent adaptive problem over human evolutionary history. Women's orgasm may facilitate retention of a particular man's sperm. I therefore hypothesized that men experiencing greater sperm competition risk will be particularly interested in the occurrence of their partner's copulatory orgasm. Men who are more satisfied with and invested in their relationship may experience greater costs in the event of sperm competition and potential cuckoldry. Therefore, these men may be more interested in ensuring their partner's copulatory …
Roles Of Serotonin 2a Receptor In A Serotonin Syndrome, Gongliang Zhang
Roles Of Serotonin 2a Receptor In A Serotonin Syndrome, Gongliang Zhang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Serotonin (5-HT) is a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Decrease in the brain 5-HT level could induce depression, showing a state of low mood, aversion to motion and feeling of worthlessness. About 12 million adults in the United States have depression. Antidepressants, such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, can alleviate the depressive mood by increasing the brain's 5-HT activity, however they can also induce a potentially life-threatening side effect, namely 5-HT syndrome. This syndrome is manifested by neuromuscular hyperactivities, mental disorders and autonomic dysfunctions. Clinical studies have demonstrated that 5-HT2A receptor antagonists could effectively block …
Signature System For Video Identification, Sebastian Possos Medellin
Signature System For Video Identification, Sebastian Possos Medellin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Video signature techniques based on tomography images address the problem of video identification. This method relies on temporal segmentation and sampling strategies to build and determine the unique elements that will form the signature. In this thesis an extension for these methods is presented; first a new feature extraction method, derived from the previously proposed sampling pattern, is implemented and tested, resulting in a highly distinctive set of signature elements, second a robust temporal video segmentation system is used to replace the original method applied to determine shot changes more accurately. Under a very exhaustive set of tests the system …
Simulation And Modeling Of Flow Field Around A Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (Hawt) Using Rans Method, Armen. Sargsyan
Simulation And Modeling Of Flow Field Around A Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (Hawt) Using Rans Method, Armen. Sargsyan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The principal objective of the proposed CFD analysis is to investigate the flow field around a horizontal axis wind turbine rotor and calculate the turbine's power. A full three dimensional computational fluid dynamics method based on Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes approach was used in this study. The wind turbine has three blades and a rotor diameter of six meters. One third of the wind turbine rotor was modeled by means of 120o periodicity in a moving reference frame system. The power coefficient curve obtained from the CFD results is compared with experimental data obtained by NREL Phase VI rotor experiment. …
Snapping Shrimp Protect Host Anemones From Predators, Amber. Mccammon
Snapping Shrimp Protect Host Anemones From Predators, Amber. Mccammon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The sea anemone Bartholomea annulata, is an ecologically important member of Caribbean coral reefs. This anemone serves as symbiotic host to crustacean associates, some of which may control parasite loads by "cleaning" reef fishes. Associates may gain protection from predation by dwelling with anemones. B. annulata was the most abundant anemone documented on three reefs, with 52% host to crustacean symbionts. Of those occupied by multi-species groups, 92% included Alpheus armatus shrimp. A. armatus is an important anemone associate providing protection to the anemone from predators such as Hermodice carunculata, in laboratory and field trials. H. carunculata can completely devour …
Social Construction Of Breast And Prostate Cancer Policy, Jocilyn. Martinez
Social Construction Of Breast And Prostate Cancer Policy, Jocilyn. Martinez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Breast and prostate cancers are the most commonly diagnosed forms of cancer in women and men in the United States. The federal government has played an active role in dedicating resources toward breast and prostate cancers since the early 1990s, when policy actors successfully lobbied Congress to adopt policies that increased awareness and spending. Using theories of social construction, I argue that the key to their success was the ability of these policy actors to socially construct the illnesses of breast and prostate cancers into politically attractive public issues that appealed to federal policymakers. Through the use of embedded collective …
South Asian Diaspora In The Caribbean, Savena. Budhu
South Asian Diaspora In The Caribbean, Savena. Budhu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This dissertation proposes a two-part thesis on the South Asian diaspora in the Caribbean within contemporary Indo-Guyanese literature. First, Indo-Guyanese writers such as David Dabydeen, Oonya Kempadoo, and Narmala Shewcharan are using the genre of historical fiction to posit counter narratives that undermine dominant narratives of South Asian culture and gender roles. Second, even as these writers struggle against dominant narratives, their texts reinscribe the colonial discourse and rearticulate racial stereotypes. As argued in this dissertation, the dismal historical realities of ethnic tensions and failed anti-colonial tactics do not sufficiently address the flexible strategies often chosen by the characters and …

State Compliance With The Mine Ban Treaty, Jacqueline C. Perez
State Compliance With The Mine Ban Treaty, Jacqueline C. Perez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Landmines have inflicted an insurmountable amount of physical and psychological harm, inhibiting social and economic development far after the conflict has ended. In an effort to create a world free of the weapon, a campaign to ban landmines was launched by non-governmental organizations. The Mine Ban Convention entered into force in 1999, requiring nation-states to immediately ban the use, production and transfer of anti-personnel landmines (APLs), destroy stockpiles within four years and remove landmines already planted within ten years. This study examines the level of legal compliance with the Mine Ban Convention. An empirical analysis is conducted using a data …
Studies Of Specific Gene Expression Of Phosphate Transporters In Sawgrass (Cladium Jamaicense Crantz) And Cattail (Typha Domingensis Pers.), Li Lin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
In the Florida Everglades, sawgrass has been displaced by cattail, predominantly resulting from phosphate enrichment. It has been found that phosphate transporters and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi play an important role in phosphate uptake in the plants. This study aimed to reveal the symbiosis between AM fungi and sawgrass and cattail and identify the phosphate transporters, especially AM-specific phosphate transporters in these two species. AM colonization was only found in sawgrass roots, not cattail, at low phosphate concentrations in lab and field samples by trypan blue staining. AM fungi could increase sawgrass growth and had little effect on cattail growth. …

There were 317 students in the study. The research found that …
Sun Compass Orientation In Juvenile Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia Mydas), Cody Robert Mott
Sun Compass Orientation In Juvenile Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia Mydas), Cody Robert Mott
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Recent studies show that sea turtles use both magnetic and visual cues to successfully orient. Juvenile green sea turtles from the near shore reefs of Palm Beach County, Florida were brought to the lab to determine whether the sun could serve as a visual orientation cue. When tethered during the day in a large outdoor tank west of the ocean, the turtles oriented east to northeast. To determine whether the sun's position was used to maintain their heading, I altered the turtles' perception of time by entraining them to a light cycle advanced by 7 h relative to the natural …
The Moral Authority Of The Child In Two Fairy Tales, Alyssa. Cedeno
The Moral Authority Of The Child In Two Fairy Tales, Alyssa. Cedeno
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Although many studies focus specifically on the child's reception of fairy tales, few have considered whether the (step)child in the tales is more aware or more equipped with a knowledge of "moral authority" and "correct" conduct than the (step)parent. This thesis will consider the (step)parent/ (step)child relationship motif in two French and German fairy tales by Perrault and the Brothers Grimm: Perrault's Cendrillon ou la petite pantoufle de verre and Le Petit Chaperon rouge; and the Grimms' Aschenputtel and Rotkèappchen. In analyzing the genre's depiction of children, the thesis will examine the ways in which the narrative voice constructs the …
Three Suites, Alison Weiner
Three Suites, Alison Weiner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Three original suites, composed during 2008-2009, are presented and discussed with respect to form, style, and compositional techniques. The subjects are Suite No. 1 (clarinet and piano), Suite No. 2: For Paul, A Master of Music (clarinet, piano, double bass and drums), and Suite No. 3: L'Chaim (two clarinets, flugelhorn, French horn, bandoneon, piano, violin, and cello). Common to all three pieces is the inspiration of klezmer, a Jewish music genre that, during its reemergence over the past thirty-five years, has welcomed the influence of other musical styles. In keeping with the eclectic nature of klezmer, each suite builds upon …

Vision Of Theophilus, Fatin Morris Guirguis
Vision Of Theophilus, Fatin Morris Guirguis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This study is a literary and ethnographic examination of The Vision of Theophilus, a fourth century Coptic narrative, as influential counter-narrative and source of counterdiscourse against the narrative created by the historically dominant Egyptian Arab Muslim state. It shows that The Vision has provided the Copts with the means to articulate their identity as different from their oppressors through its function as a repository of Coptic ideology, history and knowledge. Specifically, it has helped them resist the erosion of those aspects of their cultural identity targeted by colonial practices through its promotion of the Coptic language, pride in Coptic history, …

Minimalism And Deliberative Democracy: A Closer Look At The Virtues Of "Shallowness", Matthew J. Steilen
Minimalism And Deliberative Democracy: A Closer Look At The Virtues Of "Shallowness", Matthew J. Steilen
Journal Articles
Cass Sunstein has long argued that judicial minimalism promotes democracy. According to Sunstein’s view, a court can encourage the political branches of government to address an issue by using doctrines such as vagueness, nondelegation, and desuetude. Although much has been written about minimalism, very little has been said about the democracy-promotion thesis in particular. Yet it is one of the central claims of contemporary minimalism. This article attempts to remedy the deficiency. It argues that minimalism does not promote democracy because minimalist decisions lack the depth necessary to trigger democratic deliberation. The argument occurs in three steps. First, the article …
Maximum Feasible Participation Of The Poor: New Governance, New Accountability, And A 21st Century War On The Sources Of Poverty, Tara J. Melish
Maximum Feasible Participation Of The Poor: New Governance, New Accountability, And A 21st Century War On The Sources Of Poverty, Tara J. Melish
Journal Articles
In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson called for a Nationwide War on the Sources of Poverty to “strike away the barriers to full participation” in our society. Central to that war was an understanding that given poverty’s complex and multi-layered causes, identifying, implementing, and monitoring solutions to it would require the “maximum feasible participation” of affected communities. Equally central, however, was an understanding that such decentralized problem-solving could not be fully effective without national-level orchestration and support. As such, an Office of Economic Opportunity was established – situated in the Executive Office of the President itself – to support, through …
Copyright And The First Amendment: Comrades, Combatants, Or Uneasy Allies?, Joseph P. Bauer
Copyright And The First Amendment: Comrades, Combatants, Or Uneasy Allies?, Joseph P. Bauer
Journal Articles
The copyright regime and the First Amendment seek to promote the same goals. Both seek the creation and dissemination of more, better, and more diverse literary, pictorial, musical and other works. But, they use significantly different means to achieve those goals. The copyright laws afford to the creator of a work the exclusive right to reproduce, distribute, transform, and perform that work for an extended period of time. The First Amendment, on the other hand, proclaims that Congress "shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech or of the press," thus at least nominally indicating that limitations on the reproduction …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Living in complex social environments consists not only of sets of individuals with their own dyadic relationships but also whose own dyadic relationships with other group members must be observed and inferred from. Credibility enhancing displays may provide one effective tool for dealing with complex social environments by extracting and integrating adaptive information from an immense range of potential social partners. Organized religious beliefs typical of routine rituals and standardized religious ideologies may serve as one type of credibility cue. The aim of this study was to assess how others judge adult's expressing a religious, spiritual, or natural explanation on …
