Boldness And Reproductive Fitness Correlates In The Eastern Mosquitofish,Gambusia Holbrooki, Alexander D.M. Wilson, Jean Guy J. Godin, Ashley J.W. Ward

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

AbstractAnimals are known to exhibit ‘personality’; that is, individual differences in behaviour that are consistent across time and/or situations. One axis of personality of particular importance for behavioural ecology is boldness, which can be defined as the tendency of an individual to take risks. The relationship between individual personality and fitness correlates, particularly those involved in reproduction, remains largely unexplored. In the current study, we used female Eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) to ascertain whether certain reproductive traits (e.g. stage of pregnancy, fecundity) are correlated with individual personality in two wild populations in New South Wales, Australia. To quantitatively assess this …

Neuronal Network Pharmacodynamics Of Gabaergic Modulation In The Human Cortex Determined Using Pharmaco-Magnetoencephalography., Stephen D. Hall, Gareth R. Barnes, Paul L. Furlong, Stefano Seri, Arjan Hillebrand

School of Psychology

Neuronal network oscillations are a unifying phenomenon in neuroscience research, with comparable measurements across scales and species. Cortical oscillations are of central importance in the characterization of neuronal network function in health and disease and are influential in effective drug development. Whilst animal in vitro and in vivo electrophysiology is able to characterize pharmacologically induced modulations in neuronal activity, present human counterparts have spatial and temporal limitations. Consequently, the potential applications for a human equivalent are extensive. Here, we demonstrate a novel implementation of contemporary neuroimaging methods called pharmaco-magnetoencephalography. This approach determines the spatial profile of neuronal network oscillatory power …

Bonobos, Chimpanzees, Gorillas, And Orang Utans Use Feature And Spatial Cues In Two Spatial Memory Tasks, Patricia Kanngiesser, Josep Call Jan 2010

Bonobos, Chimpanzees, Gorillas, And Orang Utans Use Feature And Spatial Cues In Two Spatial Memory Tasks, Patricia Kanngiesser, Josep Call

School of Psychology

Animals commonly use feature and spatial strategies when remembering places of interest such as food sources or hiding places. We conducted three experiments with great apes to investigate strategy preferences and factors that may shape them. In the first experiment, we trained 17 apes to remember 12 different food locations on the floor of their sleeping room. The 12 food locations were associated with one feature cue, so that feature and spatial cues were confounded. In a single test session, we brought the cues into conflict and found that apes, irrespective of species, showed a preference for a feature strategy. …

Sustained Expression Of Tdp-43 And Fus In Motor Neurons In Rodent's Lifetime., Cao Huang, Pedro Yuxing Xia, Hongxia Zhou Jan 2010

Sustained Expression Of Tdp-43 And Fus In Motor Neurons In Rodent's Lifetime., Cao Huang, Pedro Yuxing Xia, Hongxia Zhou

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

TAR DNA-binding protein (TDP-43) and fused in sarcoma (FUS) are two highly conserved ribonucleoproteins. Pathogenic mutations of the TDP-43 or the FUS gene are all linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) that is characterized by progressive degeneration of motor neurons. To better understand the correlation of ALS disease genes with the selectivity of chronic motor neuron degeneration, we examined the longitudinal expression of the TDP-43 and the FUS genes in C57BL6 mice and in Sprague-Dawley rats. TDP-43 and FUS were robustly and ubiquitously expressed in the postnatal mice and rats, but were markedly decreased in the adult rodents. In adulthood, …

Answering My Sister's Question: The Critical Importance Of Education For Diversity In Those Spaces Shere We Think We Are All The Same, Michael Corbett Jan 2010

Answering My Sister's Question: The Critical Importance Of Education For Diversity In Those Spaces Shere We Think We Are All The Same, Michael Corbett

Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education

This essay is a response to a question about school desegregation in Nova Scotia, Canada posed by my sister in 2008. I argue that the question itself illustrates the extent to which critical analysis of the politics of race in Canadian schools, particularly in rural areas, is seldom taken up. This feeds into a persistent mythology of a racially integrated, benevolent Nova Scotia where nasty problems of race were taken care of in the historic past. The reality in many rural regions of Canada is, I argue, quite the opposite and it may be precisely the friendly, homespun imagery which …

The Implications Of Dialogue Journals In The Art Classroom, Allison L. Davis Jan 2010

The Implications Of Dialogue Journals In The Art Classroom, Allison L. Davis

Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education

Despite the enactment of No Child Left Behind (2001), many urban school districts continue to battle the achievement gap and struggle with low literacy rates. Authentic writing instruction, a main component of literacy, is being cut in those districts that struggle most to accommodate other demands made by the nation and state. The primary purpose of this study was to determine if the use of dialogue journals in the art classroom could effectively and unobtrusively increase the amount of time students spent authentically writing. Secondarily, the journals were analyzed to see if they contained information on student interests and cultural …

Look, Think, Act: Using Critical Action Research To Sustain Reform In Complex Teaching/Learning Ecologies, Leslie Patterson, Shelia C. Baldwin, Juan J. Araujo, Ragina Shearer, Mary Stewart

Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education

This paper argues that educators interested in sustainability should look to complexity science for guiding principles. When we view our classrooms and campuses as living, dynamic ecologies, we can, as insiders, make sense of what might otherwise seem chaotic or meaningless. This perspective enables us not only to describe and explain what is happening around us, but also to use our findings to influence emerging patterns across our classrooms, campuses, or our larger communities. We suggest that educators use a Look, Think, Act cycle recommended by Ernie Stringer to encourage and support sustainable school reform.

Using Algae To Estimate Postmortem Submersion Interval In A Louisiana Bayou, Sophia Renke Jan 2010

Using Algae To Estimate Postmortem Submersion Interval In A Louisiana Bayou, Sophia Renke

LSU Master's Theses

While algae are often used in forensic science for the determination and confirmation of death by drowning, their utility for the estimation of postmortem submersion interval (PMSI) has been underutilized. Algae are present in all water systems and will grow upon decomposing matter; yet, very little published literature exists on their use in PMSI estimation. Because PMSI is difficult to predict due to the variable nature of water, the reaction of the submerged body within water, and the lack of truly sarcophagous aquatic insects, algae are a potentially invaluable tool for the forensic anthropologist. This research investigates the utility of …

Hopefully, the supplements implemented in this study will serve as a model for teaching “Unit 4: Measurement …

Spatial And Temporal Variabilities On Soils In St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, Stephanie Lynn Johnson Jan 2010

Spatial And Temporal Variabilities On Soils In St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, Stephanie Lynn Johnson

LSU Master's Theses

The spatial and temporal variation of soil properties was evaluated on three sites in close proximity to Bayou Wikoff, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. A total of 1,068 surface (0-5 cm) samples were collected, geo-located, and transported to Louisiana State University for physical and chemical analyses. Physical and chemical properties were spatially and temporally displayed using ArcGIS. Interpolation techniques such as spline, kriging, and inverse distance weighting were evaluated to determine the best fit model for the project. Spline and inverse distance weighting were found to be the least accurate interpolation models. Kriging provided the most accurate model of spatial and …

Taming The Wild: On Womanhood, Nation And Nature In Ann-Marie Macdonald's Fall On Your Knees And The Way The Crow Flies, Yvonne Michelle Hammond

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This project evaluates the work of Canadian author and playwright Ann-Marie Macdonald in the context of links between ecocritical, feminist and post-colonial perspectives; it seeks to understand how broader definitions for gender provide an alternative to the patriarchal binaries that limit both individual and national identities. Part of the Canadian conscious is an anxiety that questions not only the way difference impacts their culture, but also how these differences speak to a lack of a homogenized national identity. This study focuses on Macdonalds novels Fall on Your Knees (1996) and The Way the Crow Flies (2003) , in order to …

The Manifold Operations Of The Gothic Double, Brian Demars Jan 2010

The Manifold Operations Of The Gothic Double, Brian Demars

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The gothic novel’s emergence as a dominant genre in the 19th century is illustrative of a shift in popular ideology taking place in Western Europe during this period. Competing viewpoints, particularly between opposing classes, directly reflect the uncertainties, anxieties, and aspirations of a continent undergoing a significant transition. Because the gothic draws upon the tension between contending attitudes—spiritualism and secularism, realism and romanticism, nationalism and imperialism, and aristocratic and bourgeois—it exposes how ideology embedded in these concepts either adds to or detracts from the greater good of the community.

The technique of doubling is utilized to locate divergent ideologies and …

Characterization Of The Binders In The Rock Art Of Cueva La Conga, Nicaragua, Ran Li Jan 2010

Characterization Of The Binders In The Rock Art Of Cueva La Conga, Nicaragua, Ran Li

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Cueva La Conga is the only known painted cave in Nicaragua, in a part of that country about which little is known archaeologically. The rock art, which includes carved rock formations as well as paintings and handprints, may provide clues about the past people and culture of this area. Archaeologists want to know if the paintings were influenced by the Maya to the north, or the Caribbean cultures to the east, or were a purely indigenous development. Determining the age of the paintings will help to understand the possible cultural relationships between known cultures and the rock art of Cueva …

Shorebird Migration In Western Kentucky: Phenology, Habitat Use, And Possible Effects Of Prey Availability, Nicole Ann Ranalli Jan 2010

Shorebird Migration In Western Kentucky: Phenology, Habitat Use, And Possible Effects Of Prey Availability, Nicole Ann Ranalli

Online Theses and Dissertations

Staging areas along the coasts provide reliable food resources and shorebirds may use the same stopover locations every year. However, shorebirds use sites opportunistically in the interior of North America due to the transient nature of many habitats. Little is known, however, about the use of wetlands by migrating shorebirds in Kentucky. During 2004 and 2005, I examined the phenology of migration and habitat use of shorebirds using stopover habitats in Kentucky, and also examined possible relationships between prey availability and habitat selection by migrating shorebirds. To mitigate wetland loss, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) constructed …

The Effects Of Fiber Length And Fiber Loading On The Mechanical Properties Of Wood-Plastic (Polypropylene) Composites, Farshid Basiji, Vahidreza Safdari, Amir Nourbakhsh, Srikanth Pilla Jan 2010

The Effects Of Fiber Length And Fiber Loading On The Mechanical Properties Of Wood-Plastic (Polypropylene) Composites, Farshid Basiji, Vahidreza Safdari, Amir Nourbakhsh, Srikanth Pilla

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study examined the effects of wood pulp fiber length (short, medium, and long), and fiber loading (27%, 37%, 47%, and 0% [non-reinforced PP]) with 3% maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene on the mechanical properties of wood-plastic composites (WPCs). Polypropylene and fibers were compounded into pellets using a counter-rotating twin-screw extruder and test specimens were prepared by injection molding. The results show that increases in fiber length and fiber loading significantly increased (P < 0.05) the mechanical properties of the WPCs (MOE and tensile modulus). The behavior of the composites against MOR and impact strength varied according to fiber length and loading level. In general, the tensile strength was observed to be the same.
