Making Of Viral Replication Organelles By Remodeling Interior Membranes, Zsuzsanna Sasvari, Peter D. Nagy

Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

Positive-stranded RNA (+RNA) viruses exploit host cell machinery by subverting host proteins and membranes and altering cellular pathways during infection. To achieve robust replication, some +RNA viruses, such as poliovirus (PV), build special intracellular compartments, called viral replication organelles. A recent work from the Altan-Bonnett laboratory [1] gave new insights into the formation of poliovirus replication organelles, which are unique subcellular structures containing many individual replication complexes as a result of dynamic cellular membrane remodeling.

Small Plots, Big Hopes: Factors Associated With Participation In An Urban Garden Project In Lesotho, Charlotte Ann Noble Nov 2010

Small Plots, Big Hopes: Factors Associated With Participation In An Urban Garden Project In Lesotho, Charlotte Ann Noble

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Studies of food insecurity have frequently focused on rural dwellers as vulnerable

populations. However, during the ‘global food crisis’ of 2007-2008, riots in more than

50 countries visibly demonstrated the vulnerability of urban populations to food

insecurity due to rapidly rising food prices. This study examines factors associated with

participation in an urban garden project (UGP), utilizing surveys (n=61) and in-depth

household interviews (n=37) to examine food security and dietary diversity of households

in urban Lesotho.

Households that participated in the garden project were more food insecure and

had lower dietary diversity than those that did not participate. However, it …

The History Of Special Education: Lessons From The Past, Implications For The Future, Lucinda S. Spaulding, Deanna L. Keith Dr.

Faculty Publications and Presentations

We identify three eras in the history of special education: Early Reform (1800 – 1870), Stagnation and Regression (1870-1950), and Contemporary Reform (1950 – present). Next we examine parallels between eras and consider implications for people with disabilities today, highlighting the importance of the systematic study of historical perspectives in preparation programs for special educators.

At₁ Angiotensin Ii Receptor And Novel Non-At₁, Non-At₂ Angiotensin Ii/Iii Binding Site In Brainstem Cardiovascular Regulatory Centers Of The Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat, Erick A. Bourassa, Xiefan Fang, Xia Li, Alan F. Sved, Robert C. Speth

HPD Articles

Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) have an activated brain angiotensin system that contributes to the elevation of blood pressure in this animal model. Physiological and pharmacological studies suggest that hyperactivation of brain AT₁ angiotensin receptors is a major pathophysiological factor. Consistent with these observations, radioligand binding studies indicate widespread up-regulation of brain angiotensin receptors in SHR. One key brainstem site in which AT₁ receptor stimulation appears to contribute to the elevated blood pressure in SHR is the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM). However, no quantitative comparison of AT₁ receptor binding in the RVLM has been made in SHR versus normotensive rats. A …

Translation Elongation Factor 1a Facilitates The Assembly Of The Tombusvirus Replicase And Stimulates Minus-Strand Synthesis, Zhenghe Li, Judit Pogany, Steven Tupman, Anthony M. Esposito, Terri Goss Kinzy, Peter D. Nagy

Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

Replication of plus-strand RNA viruses depends on host factors that are recruited into viral replicase complexes. Previous studies showed that eukaryotic translation elongation factor (eEF1A) is one of the resident host proteins in the highly purified tombusvirus replicase complex. Using a random library of eEF1A mutants, we identified one mutant that decreased and three mutants that increased Tomato bushy stunt virus (TBSV) replication in a yeast model host. Additional in vitro assays with whole cell extracts prepared from yeast strains expressing the eEF1A mutants demonstrated several functions for eEF1A in TBSV replication: facilitating the recruitment of the viral RNA template …

Seeing Double: A Diplopic Aesthetic In Experience And Performance, Samuel S. Sloan Nov 2010

Seeing Double: A Diplopic Aesthetic In Experience And Performance, Samuel S. Sloan

Research Papers

This investigation uses an autoethnographic approach to investigate the author's personal, phenomenological experience of diplopia, double vision, in order to apply the lived condition to an aesthetic form in performance. Using Kuppers's notion of a “crip aesthetic,” this piece re-functions a potential aspect of disability, the condition of diplopia, as a way of opening up discourses of multiplicity in art and performance. The author also calls for others to integrate non-normative body states into their art praxis.

Computational Biology, Harvey Greenberg, Allen Holder Nov 2010

Computational Biology, Harvey Greenberg, Allen Holder

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

Computational biology is an interdisciplinary field that applies the techniques of computer science, applied mathematics, and statistics to address biological questions. OR is also interdisciplinary and applies the same mathematical and computational sciences, but to decision-making problems. Both focus on developing mathematical models and designing algorithms to solve them. Models in computational biology vary in their biological domain and can range from the interactions of genes and proteins to the relationships among organisms and species.
