Diatoms As Indicators Of Water-Level Change In Freshwater Lakes, Julie A. Wolin, Jeffrey R. Stone Nov 2010

Diatoms As Indicators Of Water-Level Change In Freshwater Lakes, Julie A. Wolin, Jeffrey R. Stone

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

Water-level changes result from a variety of geological, biological, and/or climatic processes. Many of these changes occur over long periods; others may be rapid or result from catastrophic events. In aquatic environments, diatoms are highly sensitive indicator organisms and their microfossils, deposited in lake sediments, can be used to infer environmental changes (Smol, 2008). Unambiguous diatom signals can be reconstructed from lakes isolated from marine or brackish waters (e.g. Fritz et al., this volume; Horton & Sawai, this volume). However, in freshwater systems lake-level changes are often recorded as increases in planktonic (free-floating) diatoms – although as discussed below, interpretation …

The Impact Of A Youth Development Program On Secondary Students’ Career Aspirations, Bonita Williams, Jody Thompson, Tonya Taylor, Karen Eley Sanders Nov 2010

The Impact Of A Youth Development Program On Secondary Students’ Career Aspirations, Bonita Williams, Jody Thompson, Tonya Taylor, Karen Eley Sanders

Journal of Youth Development

This study’s purpose determined the extent to which adolescents’ participation in a youth development program may be linked to the participants’ post-secondary education and career aspirations. One hundred and seven adolescents, ages 14-19 in grades 8-12 completed Holland’s Vocational Interest Survey and the 4-H Career Decision Survey. Ordinal regression analysis indicated participation in 4-H had a positive impact on career decisions for students who participated in 4-H for two years (p< .038) and six years (p< .001). Significant differences were apparent with 80% of the racial/ethnic groups surveyed concerning a college fair’s impact on career choice and college major determination.

Making Authenticity: Polk Miller And The Evolution Of American Popular Culture, Jacques Vest Nov 2010

Making Authenticity: Polk Miller And The Evolution Of American Popular Culture, Jacques Vest

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the life and musical career of James "Polk" Miller of Richmond Virginia, a Confederate veteran, and successful pharmacist. Miller claimed to offer the only authentic version of antebellum slave music, and was renowned as a convincing "negro delineator." In his focus on race, performance, and authenticity, Miller straddled a number of cultural currents linking him to his nineteenth century predecessors as well as the cultural milieu of the twentieth century. About the turn of the century, he added a black quartet to his act in order to more fully capture his conception of the "authentic" slave music …

Technology Integration For Preservice Science Teacher Educators, Nina C. Stokes Nov 2010

Technology Integration For Preservice Science Teacher Educators, Nina C. Stokes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The current state of technology integration in science teacher education programs is examined with a view to providing science teacher educators with practical information and diverse examples of technologies they can model in their own courses. Motivators and barriers to technology integration and use are discussed, and recommendations for choosing and evaluating science technologies made. A brief history of how computers, related communication technologies, and science teacher education reform "fit" together is provided. Multiple interpretations of what is meant by "technology" and associated terms (distance learning, online courses, Web-enhanced courses, simulations, authentic data sets etc.) are included to set the …

From A Constitutional Right To A Policy Of Exceptions: Abigail Alliance And The Future Of Access, Seema Shah, Patricia Zettler

Yale Journal of Health Policy, Law, and Ethics

Although there has been considerable attention to the plight of terminally ill patients with highly sympathetic constitutional and contractual claims that they should be permitted access to unapproved drugs, courts have been appropriately reluctant to grant such claims. Congress and administrative agencies, not courts, have the requisite institutional competence to decide complex policy issues related to science and health care such as those involved in establishing an expanded access program. Congress and FDA should allow only limited access to unapproved therapies because there are significant concerns about the safety and efficacy of unapproved drugs, and many of the proposals to …
