Using Voice To Tag Digital Photographs On The Spot, Michael A. Farrar Jan 2010

Using Voice To Tag Digital Photographs On The Spot, Michael A. Farrar

Master's Theses and Capstones

Tagging of media, particularly digital photographs, has become a very popular and efficient means of organizing material on the internet and on personal computers. Tagging, though, is normally accomplished long after the images have been captured, possibly at the expense of in-the-moment information. Although some digital cameras have begun to automatically populate the various fields of a photograph's metadata, these generic labels often lack in the descriptiveness presented through user-observed annotations and therefore stress the necessity of a user-driven input method. However, most mobile annotation applications demand a great number of keystrokes in order for users to tag photographs and …

Regulation Of Photoreceptor Phosphodiesterase By Prenyl Binding Protein And By Other Interacting Proteins In Photoreceptor Cells, Hannah J. Gitschier Jan 2010

Regulation Of Photoreceptor Phosphodiesterase By Prenyl Binding Protein And By Other Interacting Proteins In Photoreceptor Cells, Hannah J. Gitschier

Master's Theses and Capstones

Photoreceptor phosphodiesterase (PDE6) is a central component of the visual pathway. While initial PDE6 activation following light stimulation of photoreceptors is well understood, regulation of PDE6 during recovery and light adaptation may require additional components that interact with PDE6. Two approaches were taken to characterize these potential interactions. The first explored the interaction of PDE6 with prenyl binding protein (PrBP/delta) and demonstrated that changes in membrane localization of PDE6 may occur during light adaptation as a result of association with PrBP/delta. The second approach characterized the PDE6 "interactome" by a mass spectrometric identification of 75 proteins that co-purify with PDE6 …

An Evaluation Of Supplemental Food To Increase Winter Survival Of Cottontail Rabbits, Toni Weidman Jan 2010

An Evaluation Of Supplemental Food To Increase Winter Survival Of Cottontail Rabbits, Toni Weidman

Master's Theses and Capstones

The New England cottontail is currently endangered throughout much of its range. The cause of this decline has been habitat loss that has facilitated intense predation. Cottontails living on small patches have high mortality rates due to lack of quality cover and browse and high predation pressure. The goal of this study was to determine if provisioning supplemental food during the winter could increase cottontail survival rates by reducing risky foraging behavior in poor habitat that exposes the rabbits to predators. Among fed rabbits the survival rate (70%) was substantially greater than the survival rate for unfed rabbits (32%). A …

The Promiscuity Of Aesthetics, Paul Duncum Jan 2010

The Promiscuity Of Aesthetics, Paul Duncum

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

I contend that the concept of aesthetics lies at the very heart of the art educational enterprise, albeit significantly reconfigured. I begin by offering a highly potted, historical overview of aesthetics that while it supports Tavin’s view of aesthetics as a confused and confusing concept, demonstrates how important it remains. My intention is not to support aesthetics as part of a progressive socio-political agenda, as many art educators do, but because the word aesthetics is today used extensively beyond our specialized area of art education to conceptualize the sensuousness of contemporary cultural forms. A brief investigation of books and articles …

Restageactivist Art/Disruptive Technologies, Karen Keifer-Boyd

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

In this article, I explore, with you, artists’ socio-political disruptions with communication technologies to inspire political action and social change, and how such art can be environmentally and socially useful. How does art function politically? What is activist art? What non-violent forms of dissent or disruptions to harmful practices are possible today with digital technologies, and how do artists manifest political perspectives in their practice?

Crossing The Home-Rule Boundaries Should Be Mandatory: Advocating For A Watershed Approach To Zoning And Land Use In Ohio, Melanie Shwab Jan 2010

Crossing The Home-Rule Boundaries Should Be Mandatory: Advocating For A Watershed Approach To Zoning And Land Use In Ohio, Melanie Shwab

Cleveland State Law Review

This Article advocates that Ohio adopt a mandatory “watershed-approach” to land use planning and zoning throughout the state. Ohio should adopt this approach to increase water quality in the state by reducing nonpoint source pollution, achieve greater environmental regulation uniformity, and offset the unfettered zoning power of municipalities operating in the absence of a comprehensive plan.

Historic And Modern Social Movements For Reparations: The National Coalition Of Blacks For Reparations In America (N'Cobra) And Its Antecedents, Adjoa A. Aiyetoro, Adrienne D. Davis Jan 2010

Historic And Modern Social Movements For Reparations: The National Coalition Of Blacks For Reparations In America (N'Cobra) And Its Antecedents, Adjoa A. Aiyetoro, Adrienne D. Davis

Law Faculty Scholarship

Most of the legal scholarship on reparations for Blacks in America focuses on its legal or political viability. This literature has considered both procedural obstacles, such as statutes of limitations and sovereign immunity, as well as the substantive conception of a defensible cause of action. Indeed, Congressman John Conyers introduced H.R. 40, a bill to study reparations, in 1989 and every Congressional session since, and there have been three law suits that have received national attention. This Essay takes a different approach, considering reparations as a social movement with a rich and under-explored history. As Robin Kelley explains, such an …

Building And Managing Political Consensus Through The Internet: A Projectual Model, Marco Artusi, Andrea Maurizzi Jan 2010

Building And Managing Political Consensus Through The Internet: A Projectual Model, Marco Artusi, Andrea Maurizzi

2010

This paper focuses on the digital applications in political communication and for building consensus, assuming that we need to overcome the idea of the Internet as a simple means of mass communication, and instead analyse it as a social medium for acquiring, activating, and involving people in a specific political idea or movement. The social developments under way in Internet networks are leading to an integration between reality and virtual reality, thus making the Internet an increasingly faithful representation of the real world and of different subjects’ social networks. This makes Internet a great opportunity for building consensus.

What Are The Policy Implications Of Use Of Epidemiological Evidence In Mass Torts And Public Health Litigation, Christopher Ogolla Jan 2010

What Are The Policy Implications Of Use Of Epidemiological Evidence In Mass Torts And Public Health Litigation, Christopher Ogolla

St. Thomas Law Review

The distinctions between the standards of proof employed in epidemiology and in law inform the central thesis of this paper. This analysis began by describing the role of epidemiology in mass torts and public health litigation. It later argues that because mass torts cover such a wide area, there are several problems related to epidemiology in litigation, particularly scientific uncertainty and inconsistent factual claims. Part II discusses recent cases where epidemiological evidence was raised and debated, distinguishing between vaccine-related and non-vaccine-related cases. Courts have differentiated vaccine-related cases from non-vaccine-related cases, principally because Congress enacted a vaccine act designed to compensate …

Effects Of Various Flavonoids On The Α-Synuclein Fibrillation Process, Xiaoyun Meng, Larissa A. Munishkina, Anthony L. Fink, Vladimir N. Uversky

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

α-Synuclein aggregation and fibrillation are closely associated with the formation of Lewy bodies in neurons and are implicated in the causative pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease and other synucleinopathies. Currently, there is no approved therapeutic agent directed toward preventing the protein aggregation, which has been recently shown to have a key role in the cytotoxic nature of amyloidogenic proteins. Flavonoids, known as plant pigments, belong to a broad family of polyphenolic compounds. Over 4,000 flavonoids have been identified from various plants and foodstuffs derived from plants and have been demonstrated as potential neuroprotective agents. In this study 48 flavonoids belonging to …

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Throughout the world there exist both predator and prey. This distinction is apparent though sometimes misleading. Take for example marine snails of the genus Conus that are present across the oceans of the southern hemisphere [1]. These snails are slow moving animals that appear more prey than predator. However, they have evolved into effective predators through the development of venom consisting of biologically active peptides. The venom is loaded into a hollow harpoon that the snail injects into the intended prey: fish, worms, or other snails [2]. The categories of cone snails based on prey preference are piscivorous (fish eating), …

Casino Capers: Exploring The Aesthetics Of Superfluidity, Mary Stokrocki, Bianne Castillo, Michael Delahunt, Laurie Eldridge, Martin Koreck

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Casinos are fast becoming sites for display of new Native American (NA) Arts. In such a context, casinos re-represent themselves and their communities through various visual forms and thus change their meanings. In her study of Wisconsin casinos, Stuhr (2004) challenged art educators to consider these visual culture displays as they accommodate new markets. Art in the casino phenomenon is worth investigating and how art educators can explore and/or make sense of this phenomenon is important. Casinos are using artworks as spectacles of pleasure. According to a casino gambling survey conducted by Harrah’s Entertainment, approximately 40 million Americans played slot …

Obstructing The View: An Argument For The Use Of Obstructions In Art Education Pedagogy, Ryan Patton Jan 2010

Obstructing The View: An Argument For The Use Of Obstructions In Art Education Pedagogy, Ryan Patton

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Through the use of obstructions we can see how a project-based curriculum can promote very different results. The obstructions that Sandy Skoglund gave the colloquium class at Ohio State were not presented as opportunities for play. Although Bickley-Green and Phillips allowed for play in their use of obstructions, the type of play described was prescriptive and limiting. Pitri’s use of play as a form of problem solving that also allows for personal expression advocated in this paper. Clearly identifying obstructions as game-like challenges for students, they can be used for growth and critical awareness.

A Novel Image Processing Platform Development For Preprocessing Images With Two-Phase Microstructures Containing Isolated Particles, Yuxiu Zhang Jan 2010

A Novel Image Processing Platform Development For Preprocessing Images With Two-Phase Microstructures Containing Isolated Particles, Yuxiu Zhang

Wayne State University Theses

A novel image processing platform is developed in this thesis for pre-processing the images of two-phase microstructures containing isolated particles based on Matlab®. The two phases in this work represent martensite particles and ferrite matrix in Dual Phase steels that are developed for lightweight automotive body structures. An automated image processing tool is useful for obtaining statistical microstructure characteristics, important for better understanding material's deformation and fracture behavior. However, a generalized commercial software can not automatically realize the microstructural features of special interest, and a user-specified pre-processing tool is needed.

This platform utilizes the Matlab® GUI technique, Matlab image processing …

The Contribution Of Nmda Receptors Within The Central Nucleus Of The Amygdala To The Suppression Of Pain Affect, Catherine Ann Spuz Jan 2010

The Contribution Of Nmda Receptors Within The Central Nucleus Of The Amygdala To The Suppression Of Pain Affect, Catherine Ann Spuz

Wayne State University Dissertations

The amygdala processes stimuli that threaten an individual and organizes the execution of affective behaviors designed to cope with the threat. The prototypical threat to an individual is exposure to a noxious stimulus. The central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) receives nociceptive afferents and exhibits neuronal activation in response to noxious peripheral stimulation. NMDA receptors within CeA mediate this noxious-evoked neural excitation, and previous studies in the laboratory have shown that blockade of CeA NMDA receptors via the antagonist APV elevates the threshold for noxious tail-shock-induced vocalization afterdischarges (VADs), a validated measure of pain affect in the rat. The present …

Application Of Magnetic Resonance Imaging To Understanding The Pathogenesis Of The X-Linked Leukodystrophy Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Disease, Jeremy Jerome Laukka

Wayne State University Dissertations

Myelin is a multilamellar membrane structure surrounding axons in both the CNS and PNS that facilitates nerve conduction. In the CNS, myelin is synthesized by oligodendrocytes, while in the PNS, myelin is synthesized by Schwann cells. In the CNS, Proteolipid protein 1 (PLP1), an integral membrane protein, is the major protein component of myelin, constituting ~50% of myelin protein. Mutations of the PLP1 gene in man cause a spectrum of neurological disease, ranging from the severe Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD), that typically begins during infancy with nystagmus, seizures and hypotonia and evolves into spastic quadriparesis, cognitive impairment and ataxia, to ¡¥pure¡¦ …

An Investigation Of Factors That Affect Hipaa Security Compliance In Academic Medical Centers, James William Brady Jan 2010

An Investigation Of Factors That Affect Hipaa Security Compliance In Academic Medical Centers, James William Brady

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

HIPAA security compliance in academic medical centers is a central concern of researchers, academicians, and practitioners. Increased numbers of data security breaches and information technology implementations have caused concern over the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of electronic personal health information. The federal government has implemented stringent HIPAA security compliance reviews and significantly extended the scope and enforcement of the HIPAA Security Rule. However, academic medical centers have shown limited compliance with the HIPAA Security Rule. Therefore, the goal of this study was to investigate the factors that may affect HIPAA security compliance in academic medical centers. Based on a review …
