Climate Mitigation And The Future Of Tropical Landscapes, A Thomson, Katherine V. Calvin, L P. Chini, George C. Hurtt, James A. Edmonds, B Bond-Lamberty, Steve Frolking, Marshall A. Wise, A Janetos Nov 2010

Climate Mitigation And The Future Of Tropical Landscapes, A Thomson, Katherine V. Calvin, L P. Chini, George C. Hurtt, James A. Edmonds, B Bond-Lamberty, Steve Frolking, Marshall A. Wise, A Janetos

Earth Sciences

Land-use change to meet 21st-century demands for food, fuel, and fiber will depend on many interactive factors, including global policies limiting anthropogenic climate change and realized improvements in agricultural productivity. Climate-change mitigation policies will alter the decision-making environment for land management, and changes in agricultural productivity will influence cultivated land expansion. We explore to what extent future increases in agricultural productivity might offset conversion of tropical forest lands to crop lands under a climate mitigation policy and a contrasting no-policy scenario in a global integrated assessment model. The Global Change Assessment Model is applied here to simulate a mitigation policy …

Hierarchy And Social Inequality In The American Southwest, A.D. 800-1200, Stephen Plog, Carrie Heitman Nov 2010

Hierarchy And Social Inequality In The American Southwest, A.D. 800-1200, Stephen Plog, Carrie Heitman

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Chaco Canyon in northwestern New Mexico has been the focus of much recent archaeological research on Pueblo groups who lived during the 9th through 12th centuries in the American Southwest. Here, we examine variation in mortuary patterns in the canyon, focusing in particular on one mortuary crypt, to address questions of social differentiation and the chronology of important sociopolitical processes. Based on new radiocarbon dates as well as reanalysis of the stratigraphy and spatial distribution of materials in the mortuary crypt, we conclude that significant social differentiation began in Chaco ca. 150–200 y earlier than suggested by previous research. We …

The Main Determinants Of Bollywood Movie Box Office Sales, Marc Fetscherin Nov 2010

The Main Determinants Of Bollywood Movie Box Office Sales, Marc Fetscherin

Faculty Publications

The Indian film industry produces more movies and sells more tickets than any other movie industry, with revenues second only to those of the US film industry. We employ a two-by-two research design using a set of multiple regression analyses for two different countries of destination for Bollywood movies for two dependent variables. By examining data and testing our hypotheses on a sample of 330 films, we identify effects related to brand, product, distribution and consumers on opening week as well as total box office sales both individually and collectively. Our results show that the categories of variables affecting Bollywood …

Picturing Rural America: An Analysis Of The Representation Of Contemporary Rural America In Picture Books For Children, Karen Eppley Nov 2010

Picturing Rural America: An Analysis Of The Representation Of Contemporary Rural America In Picture Books For Children, Karen Eppley

The Rural Educator

A quiet but persistent dialog about the importance of place is happening in educational research. This study contributes to that conversation by offering a critical analysis of how picture books show a “placed,” rural America. To increase understanding of the social constructions of rurality, 24 picture books were analyzed using qualitative content analysis to determine how contemporary rural life is represented in picture books for children. Results indicated images falling into six categories: Rural people are self-reliant; rural people are connected; rural people are satisfied and happy; rural people are diverse; rural areas are expendable and, rural people are ‘Other’.

A Framework For Resistance: Violence, Hope, And Rebellion In The Novels Of Manuel Zapata Olivella, Steven Curtis Clark Nov 2010

A Framework For Resistance: Violence, Hope, And Rebellion In The Novels Of Manuel Zapata Olivella, Steven Curtis Clark

Theses and Dissertations

This study seeks to analyze the circular nature of violence and its relation to hope and rebellion in two of Manuel Zapata Olivella's earliest and most important novels: La Calle 10 and Chambacú, corral de negros. These works explore the themes of institutional violence and racial and cultural marginalization within the context of early twentieth century Colombian society. They also present the themes of hope and rebellion in varying ways. By presenting the topic of violence I explore important similarities and differences between the protagonists of the novels and demonstrate how the novels are interconnected thematically and historically.

Teammates: Providing Emotional And Academic Support In Rural Schools, Jody C. Isernhagen Nov 2010

Teammates: Providing Emotional And Academic Support In Rural Schools, Jody C. Isernhagen

The Rural Educator

Numerous studies have found that mentoring has a positive effect on students who participate in it. Mentorship for students in rural communities is both necessary and challenging given the uphill battle these schools and communities face to improve their students’ academic achievement and emotional well-being. Through examining teacher, parent, and student perceptions of the TeamMates Mentoring Program in a rural Nebraska district, this study concluded that TeamMates is providing necessary social and emotional support to its mentees in rural schools, as well as encouraging them to improve their grades. However, TeamMates must continue to heighten its support of low-achieving students …

The Effects Of Gender And Catechol O-Methyltransferase (Comt) Val108/158met Polymorphism On Emotion Regulation In Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome (22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome): An Fmri Study, Ioana L. Coman, Matthew H. Gnirke, Frank A. Middleton, Kevin M. Antshel, Wanda Fremont, Anne Marie Higgins, Robert J. Shprintzen, Wendy R. Kates

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Velo-cardio-facial syndrome (VCFS) is caused by a micro-deletion of over 40 genes at the q11.2 locus of chromosome 22 and is a risk factor for the development of schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders. COMT, one of the genes located in the deleted region, has been considered as a major candidate gene for genetic susceptibility in psychiatric diseases. Its functional polymorphism Val108/158Met has been shown to affect prefrontal function and working memory and has been associated with emotional dysregulation. We utilized a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) event-related paradigm to asses COMT genotype and gender-moderated effects on the neural activation that …

Queening: Chess And Women In Medieval And Renaissance France, Regina L. O'Shea Nov 2010

Queening: Chess And Women In Medieval And Renaissance France, Regina L. O'Shea

Theses and Dissertations

This work explores the correlation between the game of chess and social conditions for women in both medieval and Renaissance France. Beginning with an introduction to the importance and symbolism of the game in European society and the teaching of the game to European nobility, this study theorizes how chess relates to gender politics in early modern France and how the game's evolution reflects the changing role of women. I propose that modifications to increase the directional and quantitative abilities of the Queen piece made at the close of the fifteenth century reflect changing attitudes towards women of the period, …
