Effect Of Pineapple (Ananas Comosus L. Merrill) And Papaya (Carica Papaya L.) Fruit Extracts On Sericin Removal From Silk Moths Cocoons In Kenya, Pauline Wairimu Wainaina Jan 2010

Effect Of Pineapple (Ananas Comosus L. Merrill) And Papaya (Carica Papaya L.) Fruit Extracts On Sericin Removal From Silk Moths Cocoons In Kenya, Pauline Wairimu Wainaina

All Master’s Theses

Sericulture (Silk farming) is the rearing of silk moths for the production of raw silk. Silk farming originated from China where it was secretly practiced for many years before spreading to other parts of the world. Silk moths are grouped into mulberry silk moths (domesticated) and wild silk moths. Silk moth cocoon has a double filament made of insoluble protein known as fibroin which is embedded in a water soluble protein called sericin. Prior to processing cocoons, are boiled in strong alkali so as to dissolve the sericin a process called degumming. Proteinases enzymes such as papain from papaya (Carica …

Morphormetrics And Dna Barcoding For The Identification Of Wild Silk Moths From Selected Sites In Kenya, Peter Kuria Kamau Jan 2010

Morphormetrics And Dna Barcoding For The Identification Of Wild Silk Moths From Selected Sites In Kenya, Peter Kuria Kamau

All Master’s Theses

Wild silk moth farming is a unique eco-friendly agro-practice with the potential of raising people's standards of living. However, the species identity is poorly understood in East Africa. This undermines efforts in conservation practices. Accurate identification is important in understanding the biology and ecology of the different species. Cocoons of wild silk moths were collected from Eastern and Rift valley provinces in Kenya. The samples included Gonometa species, Epiphora bauhiniae, and Argema besanti. Morphometric studies of the Kenyan wild silk moth species were performed based on three morphometric characters, which included forewing length, forewing width and body length measurements. Voucher …

Can Islamizing A Legal System Ever Help Promote Liberal Democracy: A View From Pakistan, Clark B. Lombardi Jan 2010

Can Islamizing A Legal System Ever Help Promote Liberal Democracy: A View From Pakistan, Clark B. Lombardi

Articles

Over the past twenty-five years, academics in Europe and the United States have written a great deal about the relationship between Islam and democracy, and between Islam and human rights. This scholarship often fails to acknowledge or take into account similar debates that occurred earlier during a period of decolonization. This article discusses the work of a Christian judge who served on the Supreme Court of Pakistan. This judge, A.R. Cornelius, was a famous Cambridge-educated legal liberal who courageously tried in the 1950s and 60s to protect human rights as Pakistan came under martial rule. Cornelius came to argue shockingly …

What Scribner Wrought: How The Invention Of Modern Dialysis Shaped Health Law And Policy, Sallie Thieme Sanford [email protected]

Articles

In March 1960, Clyde Shields, a machinist dying from incurable kidney disease, was connected to an "artificial kidney" by means of a U-shaped Teflon tube that came to be known as the Scribner shunt. By facilitating long-term dialysis, Dr. Belding Scriber’s invention changed chronic kidney failure from a fatal illness to a treatable condition. This medical advance has, in turn, had a profound impact on key areas of health law and policy. This paper focuses on the historical roots and current context of three interrelated areas: ethical allocation of scarce medical resources; public financing of expensive health care; and decisions …

Dynamic Federalism And Patent Law Reform, Xuan-Thao Nguyen Jan 2010

Dynamic Federalism And Patent Law Reform, Xuan-Thao Nguyen

Articles

Patent law is federal law, and the normative approach to patent reform has been top down, looking to Congress and the Supreme Court for changes to the broken and complex patent system. The normative approach thus far has not yielded satisfactory results. This Article challenges the static approach to patent reform and embraces the dynamic-federalism approach that patent reform can be an overlapping of both national and local efforts. Patent reform at the local level is essential as locales can serve as laboratories for changes, vertically compete with national government to reform certain areas of the patent system, and become …

A Few Inconvenient Truths About Michael Crichton's State Of Fear: Lawyers, Causes And Science, Lea B. Vaughn Jan 2010

A Few Inconvenient Truths About Michael Crichton's State Of Fear: Lawyers, Causes And Science, Lea B. Vaughn

Articles

Although Crichton has lost the battle regarding global warming, his characterization of lawyers and law practice remains unchallenged. This article challenges his damning portrait of lawyers as know-nothing, self-aggrandizing manipulators of various social and environmental causes. A more nuanced examination of "cause lawyering" reveals that lawyers are not part of a vast conspiracy to grab power through the causes for which many work; in fact, the rules of professional responsibility as well as the structure of "cause lawyering" limit their power and influence. Regardless, lawyers are nonetheless vital, and generally principled, participants in the debates and causes that inform environmental …

Violent Crimes And Known Associates: The Residual Clause Of The Armed Career Criminal Act, David C. Holman Jan 2010

Violent Crimes And Known Associates: The Residual Clause Of The Armed Career Criminal Act, David C. Holman

Connecticut Law Review

Confusion reigns in federal courts over whether crimes qualify as “violent felonies” for purposes of the Armed Career Criminal Act (“ACCA”). The ACCA requires a fifteenyear minimum sentence for felons convicted of possessing a firearm who have three prior convictions for violent felonies. Many offenders receive the ACCA’s mandatory minimum sentence of fifteen years based on judges’ guesses that their prior crimes could be committed in a violent manner—instead of based on the statutory crimes for which they were actually convicted. Offenders who do not deserve a minimum sentence of fifteen years may receive it anyway. The courts’ application of …

Nutritional And Management Methods To Decrease Nitrogen Losses From Beef Feedlots, Galen Erickson, Terry Klopfenstein Jan 2010

Nutritional And Management Methods To Decrease Nitrogen Losses From Beef Feedlots, Galen Erickson, Terry Klopfenstein

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Nitrogen losses from open beef feedlots are a concern. Methods that decrease volatilization losses will lead to greater manure N, which is likely to be beneficial in open lot beef operations. Twelve or more pens were dedicated to N research whereby N intake, retention, and excretion were quantified and a mass balance conducted using manure, runoff, soil balance, and loss quantities. The objective was to decrease N volatilization losses or increase manure N or both. Dietary CP affects N excretion and N volatilization losses. Four experiments across 2 yr compared industry average CP (13%) to diets that were phase-fed to …

The Pathology Of Addiction, Janis Dougherty Jan 2010

The Pathology Of Addiction, Janis Dougherty

Theses

The field of addiction has grown exponentially in the last 60 years with abundant research and results. Today we understand that addiction is less of a disease and more of a choice, however, it continues to be a perplexing disease. The focus of this thesis project is to condense the theories presented in Dr. Ronald Ruden's book The Craving Brain into a 7 minute animated film. The film illustrates three major topics outlined in the book: "Landscaping the Brain", stress, and neurotransmitters. The conclusion ties it all together showing how each individual piece contributes to the makeup of the addictive …

Long-Term Fish Oil Supplementation Induces Cardiac Electrical Remodeling By Changing Channel Protein Expression In The Rabbit Model, Xulin Xu, Min Jiang, Yuhong Wang, Timothy Smith, Clive M. Baumgarten, Mark A. Wood, Gea-Ny Tseng

Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations

Clinical trials and epidemiological studies have suggested that dietary fish oil (FO) supplementation can provide an anti-arrhythmic benefit in some patient populations. The underlying mechanisms are not entirely clear. We wanted to understand how FO supplementation (for 4 weeks) affected the action potential configuration/duration of ventricular myocytes, and the ionic mechanism(s)/molecular basis for these effects. The experiments were conducted on adult rabbits, a widely used animal model for cardiac electrophysiology and pathophysiology. We used gas chromatography - mass spectroscopy to confirm that FO feeding produced a marked increase in the content of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the phospholipids of …

Criminal Alternative Dispute Resolution: Restoring Justice, Respecting Responsibility, And Renewing Public Norms, Maggie T. Grace Jan 2010

Criminal Alternative Dispute Resolution: Restoring Justice, Respecting Responsibility, And Renewing Public Norms, Maggie T. Grace

Student Articles and Papers

This Article explores theoretical concerns underlying contemporary appeals to Alternative Dispute Resolution ("ADR") in the criminal justice system. Analyzing literature on free will and responsibility and leading work on transitional justice, I argue that a restorative justice approach to criminal ADR better accommodates the realities of social conditions that correlate with criminality while respecting deeply-held concepts of responsibility. I further argue that this approach provides a useful response to critics, such as Owen Fiss, who argue that ADR privatizes disputes, thereby failing to produce and reinforce essential public norms.

Don’T Let Perfect Get In The Way Of Imperfect: The Wisdom Of Michelangelo’S Atlas Slave, David Ribar Jan 2010

Don’T Let Perfect Get In The Way Of Imperfect: The Wisdom Of Michelangelo’S Atlas Slave, David Ribar

Belmont Humanities Symposium Journal

I’ve always been attracted to the cliché: “Don’t let perfect get in the way of good.” As someone educated through 12 years of Catholic schooling, with Jesus Christ as the model for all things perfect and good, I’ve learned it’s impossible to reconcile my personal thoughts and behavior, and the behavior of others, with such lofty standards. Everyone else around me might well consider this view. God must have loved imperfection; he made so much of it. Acquired from my artistic education was the belief that Michelangelo was the model for all things aesthetically perfect and good. From his earliest …
