The Antigone Experience, Shauna Hoar
The Antigone Experience, Shauna Hoar
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines Sophocles' original play and production of Antigone in the fifth century B.C. In my first chapter, I look at the historical events surrounding the production. Next, I explain the text of the play in detail in order to gain insight into and a deeper understanding of Antigone. In my second chapter, I look at three modern interpretations: Tieck and Mendelssohn, Brecht and Neher, and Jean Anouilh, each with their own approach to adapting and recreating the original. Finally, I present excerpts from my own attempt at adapting the play. In order to explain why Antigone has been …
Canada, The Transnational, And The Self Cultural Identities And Triangular Relationships In Michael Ondaatje's The Collected Works Of Billy The Kid And Coming Through Slaughter, Emily-Rose Guillebeau
Canada, The Transnational, And The Self Cultural Identities And Triangular Relationships In Michael Ondaatje's The Collected Works Of Billy The Kid And Coming Through Slaughter, Emily-Rose Guillebeau
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines questions of cultural and individual identity in two early novels by Canadian writer Michael Ondaatje. The thesis's two chapters ostensibly address very different topics: Chapter 1 assesses The Collected Works of Billy the Kid (1970) as a work of Canadian literature and Chapter 2 concerns triangular relationships between characters in Coming Through Slaughter (1976). Nevertheless, both are ultimately concerned with rejecting or transcending binary categories in favor of more complex conceptions of multiple or fluid identities. Ironically, both of these novels are set in the United States. Chapter 1 outlines the ways in which The Collected Works …
Tibetan Buddhist Autobiography 18th Century To Present, Theresa Sellers
Tibetan Buddhist Autobiography 18th Century To Present, Theresa Sellers
Theses & ETDs
The tremendous literary heritage of Tibetan Buddhist culture contains a number of autobiographical works known as rangnam, or liberation stories, written as early as the eleventh century. In a style unique to Tibet, accomplished Buddhist masters would give accounts of their outer, inner, and secret lives on the path to enlightenment, negotiating Buddhist ideals with the lived realities of Tibetan society via the written medium. This thesis will explore the genre of rangnam, examining selected works of Tibetan Buddhists from the 18th through 20th centuries. Looking at how historically situated individuals lived and wrote in a traditional framework that also …
An Empirical Investigation Into The Demand For Mass Produced Artistic Products, Chaitanya Katikala
An Empirical Investigation Into The Demand For Mass Produced Artistic Products, Chaitanya Katikala
Theses & ETDs
Thesis addresses concerns of early economists about the nature of demand for artistic products by looking at modern day creative works. In attempt to isolate the aesthetic value from other uses, the project focuses on mass produced artistic products. The industry is analyzed from three hypotheses of how consumers value art: conversational value, emotional value, and collection value. The data showed emotional value was best to describe how consumers used artworks. There was evidence against consumers using art for its conversational value and the evidence for collection value was inconclusive. A fourth value was also brought forward by the data …
Shifting Borders, Shifting Selves The Construction Of The Russian Emigre's Identity In The Autobiographical Fictions Of Henri Troyat And Andreï Makine, Marilee Pray
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines the relationships émigré characters have with Russia, the country they leave, and France, the country to which they move. The focus is placed on three autobiographical novels: Aliocha by Henri Troyat, and Au temps du fleuve amour and Le testament français by Andreï Makine. Both these authors left the Soviet Union for France, where they became prolific and celebrated novelists who published in their adopted language. In this thesis, I examine the ways the authors look at aspects of cultural identity through their characters who are, like the authors, faced with displacement and a sense of being …
Journeys To The Promised Land An Analysis Of Three Feminist Haggadahs, Jaclyn Schwanemann
Journeys To The Promised Land An Analysis Of Three Feminist Haggadahs, Jaclyn Schwanemann
Theses & ETDs
This thesis addresses the phenomenon of feminist seders in the United States. Over the past thirty five years, feminist Jews across the country have participated in hundreds of feminist seders and written dozens of haggadahs. How did these ritual actors negotiate tradition and change? The choices that actors make in this process of negotiation tell us how they approach and envision feminist Judaism. This thesis analyzes three feminist haggadahs, focusing on their choices regarding liturgy, the Passover story, and the structure of the seder. I found that as ritual actors, the three authors made very different choices in their respective …
Big-Nose Bob And High-Voice Harry The Efficacy Of Facial And Vocal Mnemonics For Proper Name Recognition, Jon A. Stevens
Big-Nose Bob And High-Voice Harry The Efficacy Of Facial And Vocal Mnemonics For Proper Name Recognition, Jon A. Stevens
Theses & ETDs
The use of mnemonics, or memory enhancement, has existed since ancient times in various forms. More recently, the precise neurological and psychological implications of various mnemonics have been studied, comparing the efficacy of different mnemonics in an effort not only to improve memory capabilities, but also to explore the way the brain stores data. Specifically, it has recently been hinted that the various sensory modalities of the brain both share and divide attention across modalities. The present study sought to assess memory improvement produced by two sensory modality conditions designed to elicit implicit mnemonic formation during proper name recognition: exposure …
Photography And Self-Awareness The Act Of Being Photographed, Elizabeth Bossom
Photography And Self-Awareness The Act Of Being Photographed, Elizabeth Bossom
Theses & ETDs
This study was designed to test whether the act of being photographed causes an increase in selfawareness. Prior research has established that mirrors can be used to induce private self-awareness, whereas video-cameras manipulate public self-awareness and that trait levels of self-awareness moderate these effects. As such, it was hypothesized that participants would display an increase in public selfawareness when photographed, but that this effect would be moderated by social anxiety scores such that those high in social anxiety would not show as much of an increase due to a ceiling effect. Mirror, videocamera, and control conditions were included to test …
Spatial Analysis Of Octopus Dens And Predation, Elizabeth Alene Hamman
Spatial Analysis Of Octopus Dens And Predation, Elizabeth Alene Hamman
Theses & ETDs
Octopuses build dens based on a variety of factors, possibly including the location of predators, prey, and available den materials. Through field work and computer modeling, this thesis examines these factors and their effect on den location and the local prey population. Field work was conducted in Cayos Cochinos, Honduras and studied the location of 10 octopus dens, eels as major predators, and two bivalve species as prey. Major prey items were determined based on midden contents and measurements of distances and angles were used to create a map of the locations of predators, prey, and octopus dens. A computer …
An Exploratory Investigation Of Sleep Disturbance In The Pathogenesis Of Depression, Kristen Linnae Ponte
An Exploratory Investigation Of Sleep Disturbance In The Pathogenesis Of Depression, Kristen Linnae Ponte
Theses & ETDs
The relationships among stress, sleep, and depression were examined to understand the role of sleep in the etiology of depression. A sample of 335 participants, age range 18-29 years, completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21). Perceived stress, sleep quality, and sleep duration predicted levels of depression. Sleep quality and duration interacted with perceived stress and levels of depression. As sleep quality worsened or duration decreased, levels of depression increased much more rapidly. Sleep disruption should no longer be considered a stress-related outcome, but rather a biological stressor …

The Movement Of Inhaled Pristine C60 Through The Small Intestine A Biodistribution Study In Rats, Chase William Sokolow
Theses & ETDs
Buckminsterfullerene C60, the most abundant and stable of the fullerenes, has since its discovery become a key component in thousands of possible applications in the physical and biological sciences. This focus has led to C60 experiencing a steady increase in production. This has lead to an intense wave of research on the potential implications of its increased environmental presence. This thesis project is a part of an overarching study that focuses on the potential biological harm that airborne C60 particles might pose, using rats as a biological model. More specifically, the goal of this thesis project was to investigate the …
Associations An Art Thesis, Christine Dormoy
Associations An Art Thesis, Christine Dormoy
Theses & ETDs
Through my performances, installations, prints, and sculptures, I rely on satirical and sometimes dramatic approaches to call attention to the constructed nature of social interaction, and more importantly how social interaction is reflexively constructed. I do this to call attention to how we interpret, catalogue, and make meaning out of the sensory information from our daily experiences, and to call attention to the role associations, symbols, signs, and spatial relationships play in how this meaning gets communicated through interaction. I present this information through four different veins of experience. I use the video medium to present my guerilla street performances. …
Shared Anxiety, Shared Identity Exploring The Crisis Of Subjectivity In The Art Object, Misha Wyllie
Shared Anxiety, Shared Identity Exploring The Crisis Of Subjectivity In The Art Object, Misha Wyllie
Theses & ETDs
A poststructuralist notion of subjectivity characterizes the self as inherently decentered and discordant, problematizing the illusion of an autonomous, whole self. Such internal crisis is an apparent flaw in any foreign meaning-making system such as language, or for the sake of this project, the visual language of pop culture. This thesis project explores this crisis of identity through a series of mixed-media sculptures and installations that appropriate elements of pop and consumer culture. Each sculpture conveys this crisis of subjectivity and its conditions, such as anxiety, depression and futility, through narrative and formal paradox. Like Claus Oldenburg and Dana Schutz, …
Chromatophore Mapping Of The Jewel Cichlid (Hemichromis Biamaculatus) And The Effects Of Morphological And Physiological Controls During Development, Diana Ward
Theses & ETDs
The jewel cichlid (Hemichromis bimaculatus) is used regularly as a model for behavior studies, commonly researched due to its unique color, ease in breeding, hardiness and prevalence in Florida. Studies have been focused on the role of color and patterns in fishes, examining its purpose in communication. Incomplete descriptions exist for the development of chromatophores for H. bimaculatus, with the most complete study to date by Baerends and Baerends-Van Roon (1950). For the present study, observations were carried out on the distribution and type of chromatophores across various stages in development. The fish were photographed to mark the location of …
New Conditions And Ideas Comparing The Post-War Economic Conversions Of The United States And Great Britain, Gisselle Callejas
New Conditions And Ideas Comparing The Post-War Economic Conversions Of The United States And Great Britain, Gisselle Callejas
Theses & ETDs
This thesis focuses on the post-World War II economic reconversion strategies of the United States and Great Britain, how they compared to each other and how successful each country was in achieving its set goals. The thesis starts by looking at the economic position of the countries as a result of the war, and then thematically compares economic performance by labor, controls/rationing and finance. It also tries to account for differences in approach as either a result of ideological or more practical concerns. By looking both at economic data from the era as well as secondary literature discussing the datas …
This Is Your Mouse On Celastrol The Behavioral Effects Of Celastrol On A Transgenic Mouse Model Of Alzheimer's Disease, Amelia March
This Is Your Mouse On Celastrol The Behavioral Effects Of Celastrol On A Transgenic Mouse Model Of Alzheimer's Disease, Amelia March
Theses & ETDs
The NFκB inhibiting compound Celastrol has been shown to lower levels of Aβ, an amino acidpeptide known to be a major component of the senile plaques seen in the brains of individuals with Alzheimers disease, both in vivo and in vitro. Celastrol has also been found to reduce the production of βCTF and β-sAPP, which both result from cleavage of the APP ectodomain by the protease secretase (BACE-1) at the N-terminus of Aβ. Thus, one likely method by which Celastrol lowers brain Aβ burden is by decreasing the expression of BACE-1, in turn reducing the expression of the substrate βCTF, …
Effect Of Props On Preschool Children's Communicative Interactions In Scripted Play Events, Gabrielle Yvonne Defiebre
Effect Of Props On Preschool Children's Communicative Interactions In Scripted Play Events, Gabrielle Yvonne Defiebre
Theses & ETDs
The current literature review and research proposal investigated the role of props in preschool childrens communicative exchanges during scripted play. It has been shown that several factors influence the physical environment that children are exposed to, and that the physical environment (including toys) influences how children play and communicate. The proposed study would try to explicate the role of abstract or realistic props during scripted play interactions. A total of sixty-four preschool children (thirty-two boys, thirty-two girls) between the ages of four and five would participate in this study. Preschool children would play with a same-sex peer and would be …
For The Love Of The Gods The Rhetoric And Reality Of Religious Authority In Late Antiquity, Christopher Koel Blexrud
For The Love Of The Gods The Rhetoric And Reality Of Religious Authority In Late Antiquity, Christopher Koel Blexrud
Theses & ETDs
The following paper addresses the issues of late antique understandings of religious authority through an analysis of ancient conceptions and representations of authority in religious literature. This examination entails the comparison and juxtaposition of several polytheistic and Christian texts from different authors, focusing on literary and rhetorical constructions of religious authority. Each chapter is dedicated to a religious subject, the holy man, the sacred text, and ritual, which together form a loose conceptual basis of religion and provide a rich understanding of religious identity in late antiquity. The research suggests that on the whole polytheists and Christians had fairly analogous …
Challenging Stereotypes, Testing Hypotheses, And Presenting Truths About Santeria, Christina Goldstein
Challenging Stereotypes, Testing Hypotheses, And Presenting Truths About Santeria, Christina Goldstein
Theses & ETDs
This exploration challenges the stereotypes attributed to Santeria by the dominant Protestant culture and media of the United States, examines the observations of bygone and contemporary anthropologists, and offers new insights on the religion. It employs material from interviews with santeros and santeras living in Tampa, sacred stories, songs, and poems, and personal anecdotes to convey that the popular depictions of Santeria are not founded on reality, and that charges of irrationality and darkness and criticism of embodiment in the religion as primitive are unjustified, to test the hypotheses of Santerias new openness, Afro-centrism, syncretism, and growing racial and ethnic …
Human Chemosensation And Wine Expertise The Biology Of Wine Tasting, Laura Johanna Weinkle
Human Chemosensation And Wine Expertise The Biology Of Wine Tasting, Laura Johanna Weinkle
Theses & ETDs
Wine experts are regarded to have a finer capacity to discriminate and describe the fragrance and flavor of wine. To address the basis of this expertise, I examine human olfaction and gustation as the modalities crucial to experts sensory evaluations of wine. This thesis explores the peripheral olfactory and gustatory systems, the anatomy of the central olfactory and gustatory system, functional processing of chemosensory stimulus information, and the representation of flavor perceptions in the brain. My thesis examines the development of perceptual skill, conceptual knowledge, and descriptive language through formal training and extensive experience within the domain of wine. I …
Hans Baldung Grien's Witches' Sabbath And Fall Of Man Intersection Of The Secular And The Sacred, Eleanor A. Cecconi
Hans Baldung Grien's Witches' Sabbath And Fall Of Man Intersection Of The Secular And The Sacred, Eleanor A. Cecconi
Theses & ETDs
Hans Baldung Griens body of work is comprised mostly of prints and drawings. A significant component of his repertoire is charged with eroticism. Lasciviousness is infused in his secular and religious themes alike. Two of his woodcuts stand out as sister images because of their similarity in tone and technique, Witches Sabbath and Fall of Man. Upon exploring other contemporary early modern German woodcut prints of both of the themes, it became apparent that Baldung Griens treatment of the themes was highly sexualized, aggressive, and also inviting. Agricultural, biblical, and sexual implications are embedded in both images that support Baldung …
Another One Bites The Dot Teaching A Neural Network To Play Pac-Man Using Biologically Motivated Learning Techniques, Daniel Matthew Goldsmith
Another One Bites The Dot Teaching A Neural Network To Play Pac-Man Using Biologically Motivated Learning Techniques, Daniel Matthew Goldsmith
Theses & ETDs
A branch of Artificial Intelligence known as natural computing, which proposes learning algorithms based on naturally occurring processes such as natural selection and biological processes such as neural networks, has been shown to be capable of learning and generalization of complex problems. This thesis evaluates two such biologically motivated techniques temporal difference learning, which learns by reinforcement, and a genetic algorithm, which learns by natural selection by teaching a neural network to play the classic arcade game Pac-Man. A replica of Pac-Man was created using the Python programming language, and networks trained with temporal difference learning, a genetic …
The Setting Sun Postcolonial Anxiety In Edgar Huntly And Heart Of Darkness, Katherine A. Stevenson
The Setting Sun Postcolonial Anxiety In Edgar Huntly And Heart Of Darkness, Katherine A. Stevenson
Theses & ETDs
The field of postcolonial studies has rarely looked at American literature in a postcolonial context. The goal of this project is to draw together a traditional postcolonial text, Joseph Conrads Heart of Darkness, and an early American novel, Charles Brockden Browns Edgar Huntly, and address problematic issues that appear in both works: the concept of postcoloniality, the portrayal of native peoples, and the situation ofwomen in empire. Most importantly, the focus of this project is on the voices of the two novels narrators, who are neither entirely colonized nor entirely imperialistic characters, and whose voices have been marginalized due to …
Attitudes Toward The Natural Environment And Habitual Recycling Behavior, Christopher E. Carr
Attitudes Toward The Natural Environment And Habitual Recycling Behavior, Christopher E. Carr
Theses & ETDs
Although behavior can be consciously controlled, most of the activities in which people engage on a daily basis are executed outside of conscious awareness and become habitual as the behaviors are repeated. However, the attitudes individuals associate with these activities can be (1) formed though various sources (e.g., past behaviors, affective information), (2) can exist with contradictory attitudes formed using different sources, (3) may be (but are not necessarily) accessed each time the behaviors are performed, and (4) are changed only when the need for change exists. Additionally, self-reported attitudes, which require deliberate evaluation, have been found to differ from …
Wildlife Rehabilitation In Southwest Florida A Study Of The Conservation Provided By Rehabilitation Centers, Katherine Elenore French
Wildlife Rehabilitation In Southwest Florida A Study Of The Conservation Provided By Rehabilitation Centers, Katherine Elenore French
Theses & ETDs
Southwest Florida is in peril of losing vertebrate biodiversity due to recent local environmental changes caused by humans. The alterations, which include habitat loss, fragmentation, and alteration, affect nearly every aspect of the unique ecosystems found there including species diversity and trophic level interactions. Changes to these integral aspects of the ecosystems have dramatic effects on which taxa can continue to survive and be present in the locale and which become rare. The databases of three Wildlife Rehabilitation Centers in Southwest Florida are analyzed to understand what conservation services are provided by community run centers to those species designated as …
The Mu Rhythm An Electrophysiological Measure Of Motor, Emotional, And Cognitive Empathy, Robert Joseph Gougelet
The Mu Rhythm An Electrophysiological Measure Of Motor, Emotional, And Cognitive Empathy, Robert Joseph Gougelet
Theses & ETDs
Brain research in primates and humans suggests evidence for a neurological system, a mirror neuron system, responsible for providing representations not only of an individuals motor, emotional, and cognitive states, but also those states of another. These overlapping, or shared, representations provide a neurological link between self and other. Further evidence suggests a positive association between the attenuation of a specific electroencephalography signal, the Mu rhythm, and the activation of this mirror neuron system. The current study sought to elicit the attenuation of the Mu rhythm across tasks tapping into motor, emotional, and cognitive components of empathy, so as to …

“Applied” Aspects Of The Drug Resistance Strategies Project, Michael L. Hecht, Michelle Miller-Day
“Applied” Aspects Of The Drug Resistance Strategies Project, Michael L. Hecht, Michelle Miller-Day
Communication Faculty Articles and Research
This paper discusses the applied aspects of our Drug Resistance Strategies Project. We argue that a new definitional distinction is needed to expand the notion of “applied” from the traditional notion of utilizing theory, which we call “applied.1”, in order to consider theory-grounded, theory testing and theory developing applied research. We label this new definition “applied.2” research. We then explain that our descriptive work describing the social processes of adolescent substance use, identity and use, and drug norms, as well as the subsequent development and dissemination of our keepin’ it REAL middle school substance use curriculum are examples of “applied.1” …

Grassland Root Communities: Species Distributions And How They Are Linked To Aboveground Abundance., Douglas Frank, Alyssa Pontes, Eleanor M. Maine, Julie Caruana, Ramesh Raina, Surahbi Raina, Jason Fridley
Biology - All Scholarship
There is little comprehensive information on the distribution of root systems among coexisting species, despite the expected importance of those distributions in determining the composition and diversity of plant communities. This gap in knowledge is particularly acute for grasslands, which possess large numbers of species with morphologically indistinguishable roots. In this study we adapted a molecular method, fluorescent fragment length polymorphism, to identify root fragments and determine species root distributions in two grasslands in Yellowstone National Park. Aboveground biomass was measured and soil cores (2 cm diam) were collected to 40 cm and 90 cm in an upland, dry grassland …
