Salt Marsh Zonal Migration And Ecosystem Service Change In Response To Global Sea Level Rise: A Case Study From An Urban Region, Rusty A. Feagin, M. Luisa Martinez, Gabriela Mendoza-Gonzalez, Robert Costanza

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

Coastal wetland plants are expected to respond to global sea level rise by migrating toward higher elevations. Housing, infrastructure, and other anthropogenic modifications are expected to limit the space available for this potential migration. Here, we explore the ecological and economic effects of projected Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2007 report sea level changes at the plant community scale using the highest horizontal (1 m) and vertical (0.01 m) resolution data available, using a 6 x 6 km area as an example. Our findings show that salt marshes do not always lose land with increasing rates of sea level …

Evaluation Of Five Methods For Total Dna Extraction From Western Corn Rootworm Beetles, Hong Chen, Murugesan Rangasamy, Sek Yee Tan, Haichuan Wang, Blair D. Siegfried

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Background: DNA extraction is a routine step in many insect molecular studies. A variety of methods have been used to isolate DNA molecules from insects, and many commercial kits are available. Extraction methods need to be evaluated for their efficiency, cost, and side effects such as DNA degradation during extraction.

Methodology/Principal Findings: From individual western corn rootworm beetles, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, DNA extractions by the SDS method, CTAB method, DNAzol reagent, Puregene solutions and DNeasy column were compared in terms of DNA quantity and quality, cost of materials, and time consumed. Although all five methods resulted in acceptable DNA …

People Can Be So Fake: A New Dimension To Privacy And Technology Scholarship, M. Ryan Calo Jan 2010

People Can Be So Fake: A New Dimension To Privacy And Technology Scholarship, M. Ryan Calo

Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)

This article updates the traditional discussion of privacy and technology, focused since the days of Warren and Brandeis on the capacity of technology to manipulate information. It proposes a novel dimension to the impact of anthropomorphic or social design on privacy.

Technologies designed to imitate people-through voice, animation, and natural language-are increasingly commonplace, showing up in our cars, computers, phones, and homes. A rich literature in communications and psychology suggests that we are hardwired to react to such technology as though a person were actually present. Social interfaces accordingly capture our attention, improve interactivity, and can free up our hands …

Voluntary Exercise In Phosphorylase Kinase Deficient Mice, Ashley M. Mefford Jan 2010

Voluntary Exercise In Phosphorylase Kinase Deficient Mice, Ashley M. Mefford

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Phosphorylase kinase (PhK), a key regulator of glycogenolysis, is critical for maintaining blood glucose levels thus providing energy to sustain muscle contraction. A deficiency of PhK in skeletal muscle is the cause of one type of glycogen storage disease (GSD) in humans. This study investigates the physiological and genetic adaptations that occur in a mouse model of GSD, I/LnJ mice, in response to voluntary exercise. Juvenile (6-8 weeks old) and adult (12-14 weeks old) I/LnJ and wild-type C57/Bl6 mice exercised voluntarily for 1, 2 or 5 weeks. Exercise data was calculated as mean daily running time, daily running distance, total …

Rehabilitate Failing Park Sewage System Environmental Assessment, United States Department Of The Interior, National Park Service Jan 2010

Rehabilitate Failing Park Sewage System Environmental Assessment, United States Department Of The Interior, National Park Service

Environmental Assessments (UT)

The National Park Service (NPS) proposes to rehabilitate the failing sewage system within Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah. The rehabilitation would provide a safe, healthy, and functional environment, and maintain public health and future service for park visitors and staff. Portions of the sanitary sewage collection system were originally constructed in 1958 of clay pipe and currently service the lodge, staff housing, and visitor center before feeding into sewage treatment lagoons. Sections of the sewage system have deteriorated significantly with age. These sections of the system and appurtenant manholes are deteriorating into pieces that regularly clog the system and cause …

A Comparison Of Abused Children And Non-Abused Children On Their Experience With Animals – A Japanese Study, Sakiko Yamazaki Jan 2010

A Comparison Of Abused Children And Non-Abused Children On Their Experience With Animals – A Japanese Study, Sakiko Yamazaki

Cruelty and Violence Issues

Recently in the United States and Europe, studies have implied that child abuse and animal abuse coexist in the same households, and the implications of these studies have contributed to the early detection and intervention of child abuse. Although a promising area of study, in Japan, there are no published empirical studies examining the relationship between children in abusive families and their companion animals. Hence, this study examines the differences between abused children and non-abused in Japan on their experiences with animals. The Boat Inventory on Animal Related Experience (BIARE) (Boat 1999), a questionnaire on positive and negative experiences with …

Landscape And Smaller-Scale Effects Of Lugworm (Arenicola Marina) Deposit Feeding On Benthic Bacterial Assemblages, Craig J. Plante Jan 2010

Landscape And Smaller-Scale Effects Of Lugworm (Arenicola Marina) Deposit Feeding On Benthic Bacterial Assemblages, Craig J. Plante

Journal of Marine Research

Objectives of this study were to (1) determine whether feeding by the lugworm, Arenicola marina, reduces abundance or alters composition of sedimentary bacterial assemblages, (2) examine recovery of “disturbed” patches of egesta, and (3) test for effects on bacterial abundance, diversity and composition at spatial scales larger than individual fecal mounds. Field comparative studies in Lubec, Maine, were conducted to test for the effects of ingestion, and manipulative experiments were done to assess rates and mechanisms of recolonization of egesta. Bacterial assemblage attributes were followed using epifluorescence microscopy and DGGE analysis of 16S rDNA. Next we examined landscape-scale effects …

The Potential Implications Of Web-Based Marketing Communications For Consumers’ Implicit And Explicit Brand Attitudes: A Call For Research, Sreedhar Madhavaram, Radha Appan Jan 2010

The Potential Implications Of Web-Based Marketing Communications For Consumers’ Implicit And Explicit Brand Attitudes: A Call For Research, Sreedhar Madhavaram, Radha Appan

Business Faculty Publications

Two developments in the last two decades frame the importance of Web-based marketing communications for firms. First is the phenomenal growth of the Internet as a viable commerce and communication option and second is the clear shift in attitude research toward recognizing the pervasive role of automatic processes in almost all the social psychological processes. Therefore, this article discusses the potential implications of Web-based marketing communications for consumers' implicit and explicit attitudes. In doing so, first, this article reviews the emergence of research on implicit attitudes, distinguishes implicit attitudes from explicit attitudes, and discusses research on explicit and implicit attitudes …

Protecting Consumers From Spyware: A Proposed Consumer Digital Trespass Act, 28 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 185 (2010), Richard G. Kunkel

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

“Spyware” is a broad term used to describe software that resides on a user’s computer and monitors the user’s online behavior. Though spyware may be helpful or benign, it can also be used for malicious purposes, commonly classified as “malware”. Consumers, who lack sophistication to avoid unintentionally downloading spyware, are especially vulnerable to the threat of malware. In lieu of this threat, it is important to understand the nature and scope of spyware problems affecting consumers. The paper will discuss how common law tort theories of trespass and trespass to chattel are difficult to apply to spyware, and how a …

Internet Filtering: The Ineffectiveness Of Wto Remedies And The Availability Of Alternative Tort Remedies, 28 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 273 (2010), Kristen A. Knapp

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

Empirical studies have shown that government Internet filtering is increasing worldwide. Internet Service Providers have progressively begun to take on filtering responsibility in a quasi-governmental capacity. As filtering has increased, some have begun to question whether Internet filtering might violate WTO commitments under the General Agreement on Trade in Services (“GATS Agreement”). This paper will provide technical background on how Internet filtering is accomplished in practice, and explain the GATS Agreement that was held to govern Internet filtering in the U.S.-Gambling Services decision. This paper will further survey the current range of U.S. filtering actions and detail why tort remedies …

The Greatest Tragedy Of All: Regulating The Atmosphere In A Climate Of Indecision, Donal R. Hamilton Jan 2010

The Greatest Tragedy Of All: Regulating The Atmosphere In A Climate Of Indecision, Donal R. Hamilton

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

Climate change is a serious challenge to our planet. The point of no return will be upon us in 2014 and we are yet to regulate the emission of greenhouse gas. Failure to reach agreement at the 2009 UN Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen highlighted the difficulties we face in regulating use of the ultimate common pool recourse: our atmosphere. Surrounding these difficulties is the specter of an ideological debate between 'public' and 'private' that is as contentious as ever, and central to this contest is the problem of the free rider. This author will argue that in the long …

Linking Environmental Nutrient Enrichment And Disease Emergence In Humans And Wildlife, Pieter T. J. Johnson, Alan R. Townsend, Cory C. Cleveland, Patricia M. Glibert, Robert W. Howarth, Valerie J. Mckenzie, Eliska Rejmankova, Mary H. Ward

Ecosystem and Conservation Sciences Faculty Publications

Worldwide increases in human and wildlife diseases have challenged ecologists to understand how large-scale environmental changes affect host–parasite interactions. One of the most profound changes to Earth's ecosystems is the alteration of global nutrient cycles, including those of phosphorus (P) and especially nitrogen (N). Along with the obvious direct benefits of nutrient application for food production, anthropogenic inputs of N and P can indirectly affect the abundance of infectious and noninfectious pathogens. The mechanisms underpinning observed correlations, however, and how such patterns vary with disease type, have long remained conjectural. Here, we highlight recent experimental advances to critically evaluate the …
