An Examination Of Family Communication Within The Core And Balance Model Of Family Leisure Functioning, Kevin M. Smith, Patti A. Freeman, Ramon B. Zabriskie

The purpose of this study was to examine family communication within the core and balance model of family leisure functioning. The study was conducted from a youth perspective of family leisure and family functioning. The sample consisted of youth (N= 95) aged 11 – 17 from 25 different states in the United States. Path analyses indicated that family communication mediated a positive relationship between family leisure variables and family functioning variables. Implications and recommendations are discussed. The addition of communication in the Core and Balance Model is recommended.

Investor Flows And Stock Market Returns, Brian H. Boyer, Lu Zheng

This study simultaneously analyzes the relation between aggregate stock market returns and cash flows (net purchases of equity) from a broad array of investor groups in the United States over a long period of time from 1952 to 2004.We find strong evidence that quarterly flows are autocorrelated for each of the different investor groups.We further document a significant and positive contemporaneous relation between stock market returns and flows of Mutual Funds and Foreign Investors.

Investigating The Effects Of Marriage And Relationship Education On Couples' Communication Skills: A Meta-Analytic Study, Victoria L. Blanchard, Alan J. Hawkins, Scott A. Baldwin, Elizabeth B. Fawcett

This meta-analysis probes into previous research substantiating the positive effects of marriage and relationship education (MRE) on couples' communication skills. We reviewed 97 MRE research reports that yielded 143 distinct evaluation studies. We found modest evidence that MRE functions both as a universal prevention and as a selective or indicated prevention. That is, MRE demonstrates program effects at longer term follow-ups for more distressed couples. In addition, we found that observational assessments produced larger effects than self-report assessments, although interpreting the meaning of this difference is difficult.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a model of knowledge transfer that takes into account both the perspective of the sender and the perspective of the receiver, with an emphasis on the latter. The contention is that, although externalizing knowledge residing in an individual or group and making it accessible to others either through direct communication or embedding information in the organizational system is a necessary component of knowledge transfer, it is not the only component. The New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) Task Force on Global Warming (the Task Force) has been convened by NYSBA President Bernice Leber to summarize New York’s existing laws and programs regarding climate change and to make specific proposals that the State can implement in a timely and cost-effective fashion to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to prepare for the impacts of climate change. New York has taken many steps to address climate change; however, there is much more that can be done. Prosthetic knee designs have become extremely sophisticated compared to early constant friction single axis mechanisms. Today, prosthetists and physicians have a wide variety of components to choose from for their transfemoral amputee patients. Unfortunately, there are little quantitative data comparing the performance of different types of prosthetic components, and prosthetic prescription is often based on empirical knowledge and experience, rather than objective comparison of prosthetic designs. The growing presence of electronic anesthesia record keeping and perioperative informatics systems is contributing to a database of valuable information that can significantly improve patient care and patient outcomes. Efforts such as the National Surgical Quality Improvement Project and the Surgical Care Improvement Project have analyzed quality measures that directly correlate to patient outcomes. Several of these quality indicators are influenced by the performance of anesthesia providers’ activities in the perioperative period. These programs promote timely administration of preoperative antibiotics. One of their guidelines states that preoperative antibiotic should be given within an hour prior to surgical incision. Nonmonosexuality invisibility in the scientific literature is explored as well as opposing historical viewpoints of nonmonosexuality's origins and nature. A focus group was used to explore the sexual identities of self-identified nonmonosexual women, their own journeys toward sexual identity formation, and the extent to which society has impacted their ability to express these identities. Vegetation Response To Restoration Treatments In A Former Pine Plantation In North Florida, Ryan C. Meyer

As the human population in Florida continues to expand, development follows, and tree farms give way to homes and businesses. As parks are established, restoration of these semi-natural plantations may provide critical habitat for species conservation. This study evaluates vegetation response to restoration treatments at two study sites, formerly tree farms, now preserves in NE Florida. Treatments included thinning, clearing, or control (no treatment) within 10m^2 plots. Thinning reduced tree canopy to 20% (2-3 pines/plot) and removed all other vegetation; clearing treatments removed all biomass to bare soil; no herbicides were used. Patient outcome data are an important factor in healthcare. Reports by the Institute of Medicine between 1999 and 2001, as well as recent research by Linda Aiken and her colleagues have added more emphasis to measures that can be taken to improve patient outcomes. Because of the role they play in healthcare facilities, nurse leaders are in a position to take the lead in improving patient outcomes. In this study we theoretically investigated the minimum scan time of an inverse-geometry dedicated breast CT system that provides sufficient sampling and dose equivalent to mammography without exceeding the limits of source power or detector count rate. The inverse geometry, which utilizes a large-area scanned source and a narrower photon-counting detector, is expected to have improved dose efficiency compared to cone-beam methods due to reduced scatter effects and improved detector efficiency. Many scholars believe that notions of fault should and do pervade contract doctrine. Notwithstanding the normative and positive arguments in favor of a fault-based analysis of particular contract doctrines, I argue that contract liability is strict liability at its core. This core regime is based on two key prongs: (1) the promisor is liable to the promisee for breach, and that liability is unaffected by the promisor's exercise of due care or failure to take efficient precautions; and (2) the promisor's liability is unaffected by the fact that the promisee, prior to the breach, has failed to take cost-effective precautions …

In 2004, the Illinois legislature passed the Gestational Surrogacy Act, which provides that a child conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF) and born to a surrogate mother automatically becomes the legal child of the intended parents at birth if certain conditions are met. Under the Act, the woman who bears the child has no parental status. The bill generated modest media attention, but little controversy; it passed unanimously in both houses of the legislature and was signed into law by the governor.

Background: The Australian Imaging, Biomarkers and Lifestyle (AIBL) flagship study of aging aimed to recruit 1000 individuals aged over 60 to assist with prospective research into Alzheimer's disease (AD). This paper describes the recruitment of the cohort and gives information about the study methodology, baseline demography, diagnoses, medical comorbidities, medication use, and cognitive function of the participants. Methods: Volunteers underwent a screening interview, had comprehensive cognitive testing, gave 80 ml of blood, and completed health and lifestyle questionnaires. We report on the synthesis of new magneto-optical materials with excellent optical and magneto-optical properties for visible-range and near-infrared applications. Bi-substituted composite garnet films fabricated with excess bismuth oxidecontent using RF co-sputtering and oven-annealing processes have been found to possess simultaneously record MO quality and uniaxial magnetic anisotropy.

Radio frequency (RF) signal processors based on photonics have several advantages, such as broadband capability, immunity to electromagnetic interference, flexibility, and light weight in comparison to all-electronics RF filters. It still requires innovative research and development to achieve high-resolution reconfigurable photonic RF signal processors featuring high selectivity, resolution, wide tunability, and fast reconfigurability. We propose a new method to create an asymmetric two-dimensional magnetic lattice which exhibits magnetic band gap structure similar to semiconductor devices. The quantum device is assumed to host bound states of collective excitations formed in a magnetically trapped quantum degenerate gas of ultracold atoms such as a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) or a degenerate Fermi gas. A theoretical framework is established to describe possible realization of the exciton-Mott to discharging Josephson states oscillations in which the adiabatically controlled oscillations induce ac and dc Josephson atomic currents where this effect can be used to transfer n Josephson qubits across the asymmetric …
