Model Complexity Affects Transient Population Dynamics Following A Dispersal Event: A Case Study With Pea Aphids, Brigitte Tenhumberg, Andrew J. Tyre, Richard Rebarber Jan 2009

Model Complexity Affects Transient Population Dynamics Following A Dispersal Event: A Case Study With Pea Aphids, Brigitte Tenhumberg, Andrew J. Tyre, Richard Rebarber

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Stage-structured population models predict transient population dynamics if the population deviates from the stable stage distribution. Ecologists’ interest in transient dynamics is growing because populations regularly deviate from the stable stage distribution, which can lead to transient dynamics that differ significantly from the stable stage dynamics. Because the structure of a population matrix (i.e., the number of life-history stages) can influence the predicted scale of the deviation, we explored the effect of matrix size on predicted transient dynamics and the resulting amplification of population size. First, we experimentally measured the transition rates between the different life-history stages and the adult …

Krein Systems, Daniel Alpay, I. Gohberg, M. A. Kaashoek, L. Lerer, A. Sakhnovich

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In the present paper we extend results of M.G. Krein associated to the spectral problem for Krein systems to systems with matrix valued accelerants with a possible jump discontinuity at the origin. Explicit formulas for the accelerant are given in terms of the matrizant of the system in question. Recent developments in the theory of continuous analogs of the resultant operator play an essential role.

Shadow Unilateralism: Enforcing International Trade Law At The Wto, Rachel Brewster Jan 2009

Shadow Unilateralism: Enforcing International Trade Law At The Wto, Rachel Brewster

Faculty Scholarship

This short essay briefly traces the evolution of trade law enforcement from the the GATT to the WTO regime. The WTO's Dispute Settlement Understanding (DSU) is widely viewed as a major innovation from the GATT regime in that it subordinates unilateral enforcement of trade law to a rule-based system of multilateral enforcement. I recognize the successes of the WTO regime but the institution effective permits (if not encourages) the unilateral enforcement of trade law outside of the DSU framework Specifically, I examine how the DSU system only provides a prospective remedy - that is, the DSU permits retaliation only for …

Strategic Ambidexterity In Innovation: An Indispensable Capability In The Face Of Change, Janet K. Tinoco Jan 2009

Strategic Ambidexterity In Innovation: An Indispensable Capability In The Face Of Change, Janet K. Tinoco

Management, Marketing and Operations - Daytona Beach

Ambidexterity is a dynamic capability that maybe fulfilled through prudent implementation of organizational processes necessary for product innovation. In this research, a model is tested using data collected from US high technology manufacturers. Results indicate that firms interested in pursuing strategic ambidexterity in innovation should implement all the studied processes in order to improve radical and incremental innovation output. Furthermore, post hoc exploratory analysis suggests that US high technology industries appear to be divided as to the levels of exploration, exploitation, and ambidexterity that they attain.

Delivery To The Sharp End Of The Spear: Responding To The Need For Library Support To The Deployed And Downrange Military Community, Edward Murphy Jan 2009

Delivery To The Sharp End Of The Spear: Responding To The Need For Library Support To The Deployed And Downrange Military Community, Edward Murphy

Staff Works - Hunt Library

Libraries that support military patrons often face unique challenges. One of the most traumatic is the temporary transfer, or sudden deployment of members of the university community, often in the middle of an academic term, sometimes without notice or adequate preparation time. Not too long ago such an event would almost certainly have interrupted if not altogether halted students’ academic progress until they could return to the parent institution. Technology now in place has allowed many of these students to continue their education regardless of their physical locations, and libraries will have to improvise with regard to the delivery of …

One Step Forward, Two Giant Steps Back: How The "Existing Indian Family" Exception (Re)Imposes Anglo American Legal Values On American Indian Tribes To The Detriment Of Culltural Autonomy, Suzianne D. Painter-Thorne

American Indian Law Review

This article describes the profound changes to American Indian kinship and social structures caused when European and Anglo American legal norms were imposed on American Indian tribes without respect for Indian culture or values. Although these sovereign nations were entitled to self-determination, they were for centuries subjected to laws crafted without their input or representation. This article takes the position that law should come from within a culture to ensure that it reflects that culture's values and permits it to flourish in its own way. When law is imposed by outsiders, it becomes a means of colonization, forcing one group …

United States V. Hatahley: A Legal Archaeology Case Study In Law And Racial Conflict, Debora L. Threedy

American Indian Law Review

This article is a case study of United States v. Hatahley using the methodology of "legal archaeology" to reconstruct the historical, social, and economic context of the litigation. In 1953, a group of individual Navajos brought suit under the Federal Tort Claims Act for the destruction of over one hundred horses and burros. The first section of the article presents two contrasting narratives for the case. The first relates what we know about the case from the reported opinions, while the second locates the litigated case within the larger social context by examining the parties, the history of incidents culminating …
