The deployment of thousands of wind energy facilities required to meet various renewable energy targets will bring changes to the nation’s landscapes, communities, and economies. Identifying and reconciling the trade-offs that inevitably arise from projects such as locating wind energy facilities is a major challenge to successfully meeting renewable energy targets. These complex challenges span scientific disciplines, involve multiple scales, lack well-defined solutions, and involve public values. Integrated assessment has been used effectively to address a number of complex challenges, ranging from climate change to “dead zones” in the Gulf of Mexico. The intent of this integrated assessment project, and …

In Memory Of Trauma, Amber Johnston Nov 2009

In Memory Of Trauma, Amber Johnston

Theses

This thesis delves into the psyche of a survivor of sexual molestation, exploring defense mechanisms, PTSD, and elusive memory in an audio and visual context. Three photographic gazes appear in this work, the dissociative gaze, the experiential gaze and the metaphoric gaze. These gazes are shown in the series In Memory of Trauma which consists of ten large Photographic prints on the gallery wall. Disarticulation is a book of images that discuss the dissociation between mind and body happening after a traumatic experience. There is also a confrontational sound installation, Confessional, that speaks to denial and self-hatred. Work by artists …

Shi’Ite Iran’S Genocidal Jew Hatred, Andrew G. Bostom Nov 2009

Shi’Ite Iran’S Genocidal Jew Hatred, Andrew G. Bostom

The Islamic Republic of Iran: Multidisciplinary Analyses of its Theocracy, Nationalism, and Assertion of Power

During July 2008, Professors Moshe Sharon and Benny Morris both opined solemnly about an inevitable Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear facilities. These two respected Israeli academicians, despite holding very disparate political views, also concurred on the moral justification for such pre-emptive action - the genocidal threat to Israel posed by a Shi'ite Iranian regime gripped with an apocalyptic, Jew-hating fervor.

Can We Prevent Genocide By Preventing Incitement?, Elihu D. Richter, Yael Stein, Alex Barnea, Marc Sherman

The Islamic Republic of Iran: Multidisciplinary Analyses of its Theocracy, Nationalism, and Assertion of Power

Genocide and its prevention both result from human choice and bystander indifference. Since the Armenian genocide, and the Holocaust, perpetrators have used dehumanizing metaphors to prepare their followers to overcome normative inhibitions that stand in the way of their becoming killers, rapists, and plunderers of members of potential victim populations. Today, one lesson from the Holocaust is that there are existential dangers associated with ignoring state sanctioned dehumanizing hate language. Not all hate language and incitement leads to genocide, and genocide can occur without hate language and incitement. There can be hate language with and without explicit incitement, propagated by …

Iran And The Holocaust: Rescue And Revisionism, Yitzchak Kerem Nov 2009

Iran And The Holocaust: Rescue And Revisionism, Yitzchak Kerem

The Islamic Republic of Iran: Multidisciplinary Analyses of its Theocracy, Nationalism, and Assertion of Power

In light of contemporary Iranian Shi'ite fundamentalist Muslim fanaticism and recent Holocaust revisionism, it is significant to show Iran's altruistic past in their role in enabling the rescue of Jews in Europe and Iran during the Holocaust. The issue of Iranian assisted rescue during WWII is one of several motifs in current Iranian efforts to minimize the Holocaust and advance Holocaust revisionism as a tool of Shi'te agitation against Israel, Zionism, and Jews in general. Current Iranian regime sponsored Holocaust revisionism not only is anti-Israel oriented, but contains features of anti-Semitism and classic Shi'ite Muslim disdain for Judaism and the …

Self-Efficacy And Instruction In Mathematics, Juana Patricia Ordóñez-Feliciano Nov 2009

Self-Efficacy And Instruction In Mathematics, Juana Patricia Ordóñez-Feliciano

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

According to the National Mathematics Advisory Panel (2008) differences in students' mathematical achievement were attributed to differences in teacher characteristics, including the use of instructional methods and their self-efficacy beliefs. Concurrently, today's mathematics teachers face challenges arising from Federal and State mandates requiring students' proficiency to improve on standardized tests. This study considered the relationship between two characteristics, mathematics teachers' self-efficacy and their choice of instructional strategies. Further, the relationship between teachers' self-efficacy and their demographic characteristics as measured by a researcher-developed questionnaire was explored.

The researcher utilized the Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale (TSES) and the Teachers' Instructional Practices Survey (TIPS), …

Menthol Increases Human Glioblastoma Intracellular Ca2+, Bk Channel Activity And Cell Migration, Robert Wondergem, Jeremy W. Bartley Nov 2009

Menthol Increases Human Glioblastoma Intracellular Ca2+, Bk Channel Activity And Cell Migration, Robert Wondergem, Jeremy W. Bartley

ETSU Faculty Works

This study examined the effect of menthol, an agonist for transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8) ion channels, to increase intracellular Ca2+ concentration, [Ca2+]i, in human glioblastoma cells (DBTRG cells), which resulted in activation of the large-conductance Ca2+-activated K+ membrane ion channels (BK channels). Voltage ramps applied over 300 ms from -100 to 100 mV resulted in membrane currents with marked inwardly- and outwardly-rectifying components. Paxilline (2 M) abolished the outwardly-rectifying current. Outwardly-rectifying on-cell patch currents were increased markedly by menthol (100 M) added to the bath. The estimated on-cell conductance of these channels was 253 pS. Kinetic analysis showed …
