Disenchantment: The Formation, Distortion, And Transformation Of Identity In Charles Dickens' Great Expectations, Lydia K. Christoph Nov 2009

Disenchantment: The Formation, Distortion, And Transformation Of Identity In Charles Dickens' Great Expectations, Lydia K. Christoph

Masters Theses

Charles Dickens' Great Expectations (1861) stands apart from his other works as a powerful expression of his later social and theological views. Rife with rich characterizations, fairy-tale elements, grotesque and bizarre plot twists, Victorian social issues, and a beautifully thoughtful and imaginative commentary on the universal human themes of loss, guilt, abuse, identity, money, social status, and love, this novel remains an outstanding example of truly great art, both popular and classic. This story of identity formation in a nineteenth-century English context demonstrates how Dickens' life and writings, influenced by spurious and inconsistent theological beliefs, express the idea that sin …

Historical View And Physiology Demonstration At The Nmj Of The Crayfish Opener Muscle, Ann S. Cooper, Robin L. Cooper Nov 2009

Historical View And Physiology Demonstration At The Nmj Of The Crayfish Opener Muscle, Ann S. Cooper, Robin L. Cooper

Biology Faculty Publications

Here we present some of the key important discoveries made with the opener neuromuscular (NMJ) preparation of crustaceans and illustrate that there is still much to learn from this model preparation. In understanding the history one can appreciate why even today this NMJ still offers a rich playground to address questions regarding pre- and post-synaptic function and plasticity. The viability and ease of access to the terminal for intracellular as well as extracellular electrophysiology and imaging are significant advantages. The mechanisms behind the modulation of vesicular kinetics and fusion within the high- and low-output terminals are begging for investigation. The …

Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Activation Preconditions The Heart Against Ischemic Injury, Tracy Wrigt Nov 2009

Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Activation Preconditions The Heart Against Ischemic Injury, Tracy Wrigt

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Abstract AMP-ACTIVATED PROTEIN KINASE ACTIVATION PRECONDITIONS THE HEART AGAINST ISCHEMIC INJURY. Tracy M. Wright, Agnes S. Kim, Lawrence H. Young. Section of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a well-established regulator of cellular energy status and metabolic function, and is a vital molecule during the acute response to ischemic stress in the heart. However, its role in preconditioning against ischemic injury is still not clearly defined. Using a novel and specific AMPK activator, A-769662, we wanted to determine if pharmacologic, pre-ischemic activation of AMPK is sufficient to …

3d-Surfer: Software For High-Throughput Protein Surface Comparison And Analysis, David La, Juan Esquivel-Rodríguez, Vishwesh Venkatraman, Bin Li, Lee Sael, Stephen Ueng, Steven Ahrendt, Daisuke Kihara

Faculty Publications

Summary: We present 3D-SURFER, a web-based tool designed to facilitate high-throughput comparison and characterization of proteins based on their surface shape. As each protein is effectively represented by a vector of 3D Zernike descriptors, comparison times for a query protein against the entire PDB take, on an average, only a couple of seconds. The web interface has been designed to be as interactive as possible with displays showing animated protein rotations, CATH codes and structural alignments using the CE program. In addition, geometrically interesting local features of the protein surface, such as pockets that often correspond to ligand binding sites …

Computing Black Hole Entropy In Loop Quantum Gravity From A Conformal Field Theory Perspective, Ivn Agulló, Enrique F. Borja, Díaz Polo Jacobo Nov 2009

Computing Black Hole Entropy In Loop Quantum Gravity From A Conformal Field Theory Perspective, Ivn Agulló, Enrique F. Borja, Díaz Polo Jacobo

Faculty Publications

Motivated by the analogy proposed by Witten between Chern-Simons and conformal field theories, we explore an alternative way of computing the entropy of a black hole starting from the isolated horizon framework in loop quantum gravity. The consistency of the result opens a window for the interplay between conformal field theory and the description of black holes in loop quantum gravity. © 2009 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA.

A Novel Plant Virus With Unique Properties Infecting Japanese Holly Fern, Rodrigo A. Valverde, Sead Sabanadzovic Nov 2009

A Novel Plant Virus With Unique Properties Infecting Japanese Holly Fern, Rodrigo A. Valverde, Sead Sabanadzovic

Faculty Publications

A novel RNA virus with a bipartite genome has been found associated with an emerging disease affecting Japanese holly fern (Cyrtomium falcatum). Diseased Japanese holly fern plants showed a variety of foliar symptoms and reduction in size. The virus was transmitted by grafting, as well as through spores from an infected plant. Partially purified preparations of the virus from infected ferns contained quasi-spherical particles that ranged from 30 to 40 nm in diameter. Doublestranded RNA (dsRNA) analyses from diseased plants yielded two major molecules of approximately 6.2 and 3.0 kbp in size, together with three other dsRNAs ascertained to be …

Novel Begomovirus Species Of Recombinant Nature In Sweet Potato (Ipomoea Batatas) And Ipomoea Indica: Taxonomic And Phylogenetic Implications, Gloria Lozano, Helena P. Trenado, Rodrigo A. Valverde, Jesús Navas-Castillo Nov 2009

Novel Begomovirus Species Of Recombinant Nature In Sweet Potato (Ipomoea Batatas) And Ipomoea Indica: Taxonomic And Phylogenetic Implications, Gloria Lozano, Helena P. Trenado, Rodrigo A. Valverde, Jesús Navas-Castillo

Faculty Publications

Viral diseases occur wherever sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is cultivated and because this crop is vegetatively propagated, accumulation and perpetuation of viruses can become a major constraint for production. Up to 90% reductions in yield have been reported in association with viral infections. About 20 officially accepted or tentative virus species have been found in sweet potato and other Ipomoea species. They include three species of begomoviruses (genus Begomovirus, family Geminiviridae) whose genomes have been fully sequenced. In this investigation, we conducted a search for begomoviruses infecting sweet potato and Ipomoea indica in Spain and characterized the complete genome of …

The Human Rights Crisis In Iran: The Islamic Republic Continues To Crack Down On Dissent With Impunity, Renee C. Redman

The Islamic Republic of Iran: Multidisciplinary Analyses of its Theocracy, Nationalism, and Assertion of Power

On June 12, 2009, shortly after the polls closed, the Iranian government announced that the incumbent, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, had won the presidential election by a landslide. His main challengers, Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, immediately disputed this conclusion on the grounds of fraud and called for new elections. Massive street demonstrations broke out protesting the reported result and in support of the opposition.

Scholars For Peace In The Middle East, Jackie Wolcott

The Islamic Republic of Iran: Multidisciplinary Analyses of its Theocracy, Nationalism, and Assertion of Power

While there are many sources of unrest and instability in this troubled region, there can be no question that Iran's pursuit of a nuclear weapons capability is the principle threat not only to the security of Israel and the region, but the entire world. How the international community addresses (or fails to address) Iran's nuclear programs will have grave implications for the entire nonproliferation regime. Other states considering their own nuclear programs are watching the situation in Iran closely.

Understanding The Iranian Green Movement: Regime Change From Within, Amir Fakhravar

The Islamic Republic of Iran: Multidisciplinary Analyses of its Theocracy, Nationalism, and Assertion of Power

When we talk about human rights in Iran, the first thing that comes to mind is the torture of political prisoners. Amir Fakhravar is one of the eye witnesses to torture in the Islamic Republic prisons. He spent over five years of my life in prison, under torture, and over 15 years in the corridors of the Revolutionary courts.
