A Study Of Current Practice Of Corporate Social Responsibility (Csr) And An Examination Of The Relationship Between Csr And Financial Performance Using Structural Equation Modelling (Sem), Lorraine Sweeney

Doctoral

There has been a significant increase in interest in CSR in recent years (Gulyas, 2009; McGehee et al, 2009) and it is regarded as an important topic for research (Burton and Goldsby, 2009). Not only has this topic received academic attention but it is becoming a mainstream issue for many organisations (Renneboog et al, 2008; Nijof and Brujin, 2008). However, it has been noted that research on CSR in SMEs is quite scant (Burton and Goldsby, 2008; Cilberti et al, 2008). A second area of literature that remains unresolved is the relationship between CSR and financial performance (Park and Lee, …

An Environment That Fosters Shared Leadership And The Effects On Engineering Education: An Analysis And Proposed Structure, Brian J. Galli, Ray Luechtefeld

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Engineers must not only have design and technical skills, but they must also possess the ability to work in and lead teams, adopt and adapt to change, and act as leaders who can think in terms of the bigger picture. to develop these skills, engineering students must be actively involved in their education and trained to continually learn. Many engineering students have become accustomed to traditional forms of education, which can lead to passivity and dependence on faculty to tell them what to know and why they need to know it. Research in organizational behavior suggests a solution can lie …

Event Coverage In Sparse Mobile Sensor Networks, Mark Snyder, Sriram Chellappan Dec 2009

Event Coverage In Sparse Mobile Sensor Networks, Mark Snyder, Sriram Chellappan

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Autonomous mobile sensors are employed with ever-increasing frequency, in applications ranging from search and rescue, detection of forest fires, and battlefield surveillance. in this paper, we consider a representative surveillance problem wherein a sparse number of mobile sensors are expected to cover events of interest in a deployment field. Each event appears for a certain time and then disappears. Furthermore, the location of each event and its duration is unknown. in this paper, we design a sensor movement strategy based on efficient traversal in the network to fulfill two objectives: maximizing event detection and minimizing detection delay. Analysis and simulations …

A System For Detecting Xml Similarity In Content And Structure Using Relational Database, Waraporn Viyanon, Sanjay Kumar Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we describe a system incorporating an improved technique that detects the similarity of two XML documents based on content and structure similarity using keys. the technique consists of three major components: A subtree generator and validator, a key generator, and similarity components that compare content and structure of the XML documents. First, an XML document is stored in a relational database and extracted into small subtrees using leaf-node parents. the leaf-node parents are considered as a root of a subtree which is then recursively traversed bottom-up for matching. Second, a possible key(s) is identified in order to …

Privacy Preserving Portable Health Record (P³Hr), Pavan Roy Marupally, Vamsi Paruchuri, Sriram Chellappan Dec 2009

Privacy Preserving Portable Health Record (P³Hr), Pavan Roy Marupally, Vamsi Paruchuri, Sriram Chellappan

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Personal health records (PHRs) offer significant potential to stimulate transformational changes in health care delivery and self-care by patients. There is a gap between today's personal health records (PHRs) and what patients say they want and need from this electronic tool for managing their health information. Current barriers to PHR adoption among patients include cost, concerns that information is not protected or private, inconvenience, design shortcomings, and the inability to share information across organizations. We propose a novel architecture to bridge the gap based on Privacy Preserving Portable Health Record(P3HR), a device that incorporates a smart card into …

Directed Coverage In Wireless Sensor Networks: Concept And Quality, Xiaole Bai, Lei Ding, Jin Teng, Sriram Chellappan, Changqing Xu, Dong Xuan

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we introduce a new type of coverage for wireless sensor networks, called Directed Coverage (D-Coverage). Basically, D-Coverage is the coverage provided by a sensor network monitoring an area between two boundaries, through which the intruder attempts to penetrates the area. We also study how to measure the quality of D-Coverage. Our first evaluation approach is a projection-Based simple approach, while our second approach is a more comprehensive Markov chain-based approach. Our evaluation approaches can accurately evaluate the quality and provide good guidelines for sensor network deployment and run-time repair. ©2009 IEEE.

Detecting The Process' 1.5 Sigma Shift: A Quantitative Study, James R. Stevenson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Process behavior can change with time. In this study an attempt was made to discover whether the Six Sigma™ claim of changes in the process mean stayed within +/- 1.5 sigma units. Several process groups were examined for a particular firm that made metal castings, machined parts, tested major components and assembled these into a vehicle that was a product sold to the customer. As the assembly progressed, deficiencies were identified and recorded. Analyses employed cumulative sum (CUSUM) sequence charts, Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) time series analyses, minimum mean square error (MMSE) exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA), Shewhart control …

Electro-Osmotic Actuation For Micropump Applications, Sean O'Brien Dec 2009

Electro-Osmotic Actuation For Micropump Applications, Sean O'Brien

Theses

An electro-osmotic actuation mechanism is explored for micropump applications where self contained, low power, miniaturized pumps are necessary. The principle of electro-osmosis through a cation selective membrane is used to develop a differential pressure which is used to deflect a pump membrane. In an electro-osmotic cell, there are electrolyte filled chambers on either side of an ion specific membrane. Hydrated cations migrate in an applied electric field, effectively pulling water molecules to the cathodic chamber. In such a setup, the polarity of the current can be periodically reversed causing the chambers to alternately fill and discharge. Since the chemical reactions …

The Effects Of Motivational Independent Reading Programs On Elementary At-Risk Students’ Reading Skills, Kathleeen J. Trueb

Dissertations

Teaching literacy is a challenging process that incorporates the functional and structural aspects of language with the comprehension of its content. Educators are often unable to successfully identify the appropriate strategies that are best-suited to communicate these distinctive components of literacy to students. Students from backgrounds of low socio-economic status are more likely to face challenges in acquiring literacy due to the cultural exceptions attached to their community and to the lack of resources available to them in the home and in schools that have less funding. The research study seeks to investigate these issues through comparing and contrasting the …

Why Egregious Errors Of Law May Yet Justify A Refusal Of Enforcement Under The 'New York Convention', Seng Wei, Edward Ti

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Parties on the losing side in international arbitration have long argued that an error of law is a defence to the enforcement of foreign awards. Citing article V(2)(b) of the New York Convention, such parties have argued that a manifest error of law is a violation of public policy. While national courts have generally paid little heed to this line of argument, this article seeks to raise the possibility that there may yet be the exceedingly rare instance in which a court should preclude enforcing an award marred by a hideous error of law. Limited review of an arbitrator's application …

The Use And Misuse Of Well-Known Marks Listings, Kung-Chung Liu, Eric Wang, Xinliang Tao

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The continual strengthening of the protection for well-known marks has been one of the features of international trademark development in the post-TRIPS era. In many countries well-known marks can now be granted full trademark right and protection merely from the fact that they are well-known; well-known marks can also be protected against dilution or even the likelihood thereof, and against comparative advertising that is discrediting or denigrating. However, for market late-comers seeking a new trademark, there is no clear way to determine if a particular mark is well-known. Without this certainty the applicant cannot calculate the risk of having the …

Psyche + Physique, Janet Winkie Dec 2009

Psyche + Physique, Janet Winkie

Theses

Through this thesis I explore how human perceptions are made regarding masculinity and the impact that apparel and environment have on the male psyche and physique. I perceive the function of men's apparel as providing a hinge, or entry point into the male identity, ultimately examining themes such as gender roles, sexuality, social class and age. In this thesis exploration, I intend to examine the male physique and embody it using male and female byproducts, found objects and accessories.

Incorporating themes such as space and place, this practice of assemblage and installation offers the "staging" of male-themed spaces, providing dialogue …
