Bias In Closed Population Capture-Recapture, Candace M. Lynn Dec 2009

Bias In Closed Population Capture-Recapture, Candace M. Lynn

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Our primary question was the effect of departures from assumptions on population estimates obtained using three maximum likelihood population size estimators: M0 (all individuals have the same capture probability on all occasions), Mb (behavior is affected by prior capture) and Mt (all individuals have the same capture probability that varies by occasion). After examining the initial results and observing substantial negative bias (underestimates), we attempted to model the bias for M0 and Mb capture scenarios as these situations had consistent patterns. The Mt scenario with its erratic behaviors was not modeled. We noted that M0 and Mt performed equally well …

An Assessment Of Perceived Crop Damage In A Tanzanian Village Impacted By Human-Elephant Conflict And An Investigation Of Deterrent Properties Of African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) Exudates Using Bioassays, Rebekah R. Karimi Dec 2009

An Assessment Of Perceived Crop Damage In A Tanzanian Village Impacted By Human-Elephant Conflict And An Investigation Of Deterrent Properties Of African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) Exudates Using Bioassays, Rebekah R. Karimi

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Human-elephant conflict (HEC) is on the rise in East Africa as habitat that was formerly occupied by elephants and other wildlife is being converted to farmland. African elephants (Loxodonta africana) will raid agricultural fields to feed on crops, and many agriculturalists attribute the majority of their crop damage to elephants. The first two objectives of this study were to evaluate the accuracy of this perception by comparing perceived crop damage by elephants and other factors to the actual, quantified crop damage, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of deterrent methods against wildlife used by local farmers in a Tanzanian …

Effects Of Testosterone And Training On Performance In The Non-Territorial Lizard (Aspidoscelis Sexlineata), Jennifer L. O'Connor Dec 2009

Effects Of Testosterone And Training On Performance In The Non-Territorial Lizard (Aspidoscelis Sexlineata), Jennifer L. O'Connor

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In territorial lizards, testosterone (T) has been suggested as a possible mediator of seasonal increases in endurance and bite force, which are important for maintaining territories and winning male-male competitions. Aspidoscelis sexlineata, a non-territorial lizard, has elevated bite force and endurance during the breeding season when T levels are elevated (Gowan 2008). Here, I investigated the effects of experimentally elevated T levels on bite force and endurance. Tonic-release implants elevated T levels for 2 weeks; however, they failed to increase performance during that time. Endurance decreased for all lizards in the lab study; suggesting that captivity negatively affects endurance. A …

Enabling Secure Secret Updating For Unidirectional Key Distribution In Rfid-Enabled Supply Chains, Shaoying Cai, Tieyan Li, Changshe Ma, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng Dec 2009

Enabling Secure Secret Updating For Unidirectional Key Distribution In Rfid-Enabled Supply Chains, Shaoying Cai, Tieyan Li, Changshe Ma, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In USENIX Security 08, Juels, Pappu and Parno proposed a secret sharing based mechanism to alleviate the key distribution problem in RFID-enabled supply chains. Compared to existing pseudonym based RFID protocols, the secret sharing based solution is more suitable for RFID-enabled supply chains since it does not require a database of keys be distributed among supply chain parties for secure ownership transfer of RFID tags. However, this mechanism cannot resist tag tracking and tag counterfeiting attacks in supply chain systems. It is also not convenient for downstream supply chain parties to adjust the size of RFID tag collections in recovering …

Computationally Secure Hierarchical Self-Healing Key Distribution For Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks, Yanjiang Yang, Jianying Zhou, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Self-healing group key distribution is a primitive aimed to achieve robust key distribution in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) over lossy communication channels. However, all the existing self-healing group key distribution schemes in the literature are designed for homogenous WSNs that do not scale. In contract, heterogeneous WSNs have better scalability and performance. We are thus motivated to study self-healing group key distribution for heterogeneous WSNs. In particular, we propose the concept of hierarchical self-healing group key distribution, tailored to the heterogeneous WSN architecture; we further revisit and adapt Dutta et al.’s model to the setting of hierarchical self-healing group …

Evaluation The Efficiency And Effectiveness Of The Iraq Stock Exchange -An Empirical Study From July 2004 To March 2008, Mousa Kalaf Awaad, Ali Jeeran Abid Ali

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

The aim of this study was to provide an overall assessment to the efficiency of the Iraq stocks exchanges (ISE) through specifying well –known models .First, Fama's efficient market hypothesis as a contrary concept to the random walk hypothesis, was performed and it has been found that ISE follows the random process, so the price of the shares can't be predicated on the basis of past information. Second,we use a multifactor model, which so named multiple regression, to explore the link between ISE and the main economic indicators. our empirical analysis finds that every weak associations exists between major ISE …

A Number of conclusions were reached among which the important …

The Importance Of Improved Forests In Iraq And Their Impact On The Economic And Social Future, Mu'ayyad Saleh Abdul Qadir Dec 2009

The Importance Of Improved Forests In Iraq And Their Impact On The Economic And Social Future, Mu'ayyad Saleh Abdul Qadir

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

Forestry in Iraq has suffered a distinct deficiency in meeting the population's demand for primary timber products and secondary derivatives, including branches, foliage, wild plants, and wildlife products, necessitating a strategic shift toward innovative solutions for this dual economic challenge of timber scarcity and limited developmental funding. This crisis has been exacerbated by the destruction of vast forest areas through burning and unregulated logging by local inhabitants, compounded by state-led degradation during the First (1980) and Second (1990) Gulf Wars, as well as unmanaged grazing that decimated both natural and artificial tree cover. Furthermore, the collapse of irrigation systems has …

The Global Financial Crisis And The Role Of War And Its Characterization As Solutions "The Objective Roots And The Legal Possibility Of The Crisis In Economic Thought", Abdul Jabbar Mahmoud Fattah Dec 2009

The Global Financial Crisis And The Role Of War And Its Characterization As Solutions "The Objective Roots And The Legal Possibility Of The Crisis In Economic Thought", Abdul Jabbar Mahmoud Fattah

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

This paper examination of the "objective roots" of the crisis, tracing how legal and economic frameworks within various schools of thought have historically addressed—or failed to mitigate—systemic failures. A significant and provocative aspect of the study is its analysis of the relationship between economic crises and war. It scrutinizes the historical tendency to characterize conflict or military expansion as a "solution" to economic stagnation or collapse, examining the ethical and legal implications of such perspectives. By synthesizing economic theory with legal analysis, the author aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms that lead to global financial volatility. The …

A Comparison Of Some Robust Methods In Canonical Correlation Analysis Using Simulation With A Application, Lekaa Ali Alalawy, Tareq Azeez

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

The important of the necessity to my efficient estimation methods, which are called the robust methods, appears when the data of the studied phenomenon are contaminated, it means the observations contains outliers, which may produce estimators which result in increasing (decreasing) in the (MSE), That would leads to an inaccurate statistical inference. From this point was the good behind this research in reaching robust estimators of canonical correlation analysis that can be achieved through the study of some robust methods such as (estimators – M, estimators – MVE, estimators-MCD and estimators-S) . which tow types of applied studies were made, The …

A Robust Damage Assessment Model For Corrupted Database Systems, Ge Fu, Hong Zhu, Yingjiu Li Dec 2009

A Robust Damage Assessment Model For Corrupted Database Systems, Ge Fu, Hong Zhu, Yingjiu Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

An intrusion tolerant database uses damage assessment techniques to detect damage propagation scales in a corrupted database system. Traditional damage assessment approaches in a intrusion tolerant database system can only locate damages which are caused by reading corrupted data. In fact, there are many other damage spreading patterns that have not been considered in traditional damage assessment model. In this paper, we systematically analyze inter-transaction dependency relationships that have been neglected in the previous research and propose four different dependency relationships between transactions which may cause damage propagation. We extend existing damage assessment model based on the four novel dependency …

A New Approach For Anonymous Password Authentication, Yanjiang Yang, Jianying Zhou, Jian Weng, Feng Bao Dec 2009

A New Approach For Anonymous Password Authentication, Yanjiang Yang, Jianying Zhou, Jian Weng, Feng Bao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Anonymous password authentication reinforces password authentication with the protection of user privacy. Considering the increasing concern of individual privacy nowadays, anonymous password authentication represents a promising privacy-preserving authentication primitive. However, anonymous password authentication in the standard setting has several inherent weaknesses, making its practicality questionable. In this paper, we propose a new and efficient approach for anonymous password authentication. Our approach assumes a different setting where users do not register their passwords to the server; rather, they use passwords to protect their authentication credentials. We present a concrete scheme, and get over a number of challenges in securing password-protected credentials …

Adaptive Type-2 Fuzzy Maintenance Advisor For Offshore Power Systems, Zhaoxia Wang, C. S. Chang, Fan Yang, W. W. Tan Dec 2009

Adaptive Type-2 Fuzzy Maintenance Advisor For Offshore Power Systems, Zhaoxia Wang, C. S. Chang, Fan Yang, W. W. Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Proper maintenance strategies are very desirable for minimizing the operational and maintenance costs of power systems without sacrificing reliability. Condition-based maintenance has largely replaced time-based maintenance because of the former's potential economic benefits. As offshore substations are often remotely located, they experience more adverse environments, higher failures, and therefore need more powerful analytical tools than their onshore counterpart. As reliability information collected during operation of an offshore substation can rarely avoid uncertainties, it is essential to obtain consistent estimates of reliability measures under changing environmental and operating conditions. Some attempts with type-1 fuzzy logic were made with limited success in …

Evening Primrose Oil, Bryan Bayles, Richard Usatine Dec 2009

Evening Primrose Oil, Bryan Bayles, Richard Usatine

Public Health (Archived)

Evening primrose oil (Oenothera biennis) is a commonly used alternative therapy and a rich source of omega-6 essential fatty acids. It is best known for its use in the treatment of systemic diseases marked by chronic inflammation, such as atopic dermatitis and rheumatoid arthritis. It is often used for several women’s health conditions, including breast pain (mastalgia), menopausal and premenstrual symptoms, cervical ripening, and labor induction or augmentation. However, there is insufficient evidence to make a reliable assessment of its effectiveness for most clinical indications. The current evidence suggests that oral evening primrose oil does not provide clinically significant improvement …

Who Governs Energy? The Challenges Facing Global Energy Governance, Ann Florini, Benjamin K. Sovacool

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article conceptualizes the energy problems facing society from a global governance perspective. It argues that a notion of "global energy governance," taken to mean international collective action efforts undertaken to manage and distribute energy resources and provide energy services, offers a meaningful and useful framework for assessing energy-related challenges. The article begins by exploring the concepts of governance, global governance, and global energy governance. It then examines some of the existing institutions in place to establish and carry out rules and norms governing global energy problems and describes the range of institutional design options available to policymakers. It briefly …

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In this article we reflect upon negotiation strategies and explore the utility of reconciling the dichotomy between interest-based and positional approaches to negotiation. Ultimately, we advocate for a ‘constructive model’ of negotiation and introduce the ‘negotiation navigation map’ that serves the negotiator well in preparing for this approach to negotiation.

On The Untraceability Of Anonymous Rfid Authentication Protocol With Constant Key-Lookup, Bing Liang, Yingjiu Li, Tieyan Li, Robert H. Deng Dec 2009

On The Untraceability Of Anonymous Rfid Authentication Protocol With Constant Key-Lookup, Bing Liang, Yingjiu Li, Tieyan Li, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In ASIACCS'08, Burmester, Medeiros and Motta proposed an anonymous RFID authentication protocol (BMM protocol [2]) that preserves the security and privacy properties, and achieves better scalability compared with other contemporary approaches. We analyze BMM protocol and find that some of security properties (especial untraceability) are not fulfilled as originally claimed. We consider a subtle attack, in which an adversary can manipulate the messages transmitted between a tag and a reader for several continuous protocol runs, and can successfully trace the tag after these interactions. Our attack works under a weak adversary model, in which an adversary can eavesdrop, intercept and …

Dialogic Cosmopolitanism And Global Justice, Eduard Jordaan Dec 2009

Dialogic Cosmopolitanism And Global Justice, Eduard Jordaan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Although the term “cosmopolitan-communitarian debate” never really caught on, a national-global fault line remains prominent in debates about global justice. “Dialogic cosmopolitanism” holds the promise of bridging this alleged fault line by accepting many of the communitarian criticisms against cosmopolitanism and following what can be described as a communitarian path to cosmopolitanism. This article identifies and describes four key elements that distinguish dialogic cosmopolitanism: a respect for difference; a commitment to genuine dialogue; an open, hesitant and self-problematising attitude on the part of the moral subject; and an undertaking to expand the boundaries of moral concern to the point of …

The Cartography Of National Humiliation And The Emergence Of China’S Geobody, William A. Callahan Dec 2009

The Cartography Of National Humiliation And The Emergence Of China’S Geobody, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Maps are an important site of the production and consumption of the national image. This essay examines modern Chinese maps to show how the very material borders between foreign and domestic space are the outgrowth of the symbolic workings of historical geography and the conventions of Chinese cartography. These maps do much more than celebrate the extent of Chinese sovereignty; they also mourn the loss of national territories through a cartography of national humiliation. The goal of this essay is to shift our attention from the diplomatic issues of international borders to examine what Chinese maps of China can tell …

An Entity Sui Generis In The Wto: Taiwan's Wto Membership And Its Trade Law Regime, Han-Wei Liu

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

As one of the founding members of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), Taiwan (the Republic of China or ROC) - the 17th largest economy, was granted accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in November 2001 after its observer status of eleven years. Taiwan, classified by most commentators as an "unrecognized state" or an "entity sui generis", has been excluded from most of the major international organizations. Taiwan's accession to the WTO, therefore, is considered to be an important breakthrough in diplomacy for the past decades. Notwithstanding its WTO membership, the Taiwanese Government has employed numerous trade …
