Evaluation Of Best Management Practices To Reduce Nutrients Runoff In Watersheds In Arkansas, Hector German Rodriguez Diaz
Evaluation Of Best Management Practices To Reduce Nutrients Runoff In Watersheds In Arkansas, Hector German Rodriguez Diaz
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There are many non point sources (NPS) of pollution issues across the state of Arkansas. Each region of the state has different concerns. Many watersheds have been included in the Arkansas's 2008 303(d) list for NPS impairments with sediment and nutrients being the primary causes of concern. This research hypothesized that there are no cost or net returns risks when adopting best management practices (BMPs) to control nutrients runoff and that selection, timing, placement and cost have no impact on the implementation of BMPs. Using two priority watersheds, the L'Anguille River and the Lincoln Lake, as examples, the environmental benefits …

Applications Of Variable Number Tandem Repeat Genotyping In The Validation Of An Animal Medical Model And Gene Flow Studies In Threatened Populations Of Reptiles, Candace D. Smith
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
We used variable number tandem repeats (VNTR) to validate the chicken as a human medical model for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension. We identified seven regions on four chromosomes and interrogated for VNTR markers that significantly associate with Pulmonary Hypertension Syndrome/ascites. In those regions, we identified 7 candidate genes; AGTR1, ACE, p38MAPK, SST, 5HT2B, NET1, and CALM3 for further analysis as significantly contributing QTL for ascites/PHS. We also used variable number tandem repeats to measure gene flow and gather evidence for multiple paternity in a population of Timber rattlesnakes, Crotalus horridus. We were able to verify 1 VNTR that can be used …
Realization Of Cofeb|Mgo|Cofeb Magnetic Tunnel Junction Devices Through Materials Analysis, Process Integration And Circuit Simulation, Sankha S. Mukherjee
Realization Of Cofeb|Mgo|Cofeb Magnetic Tunnel Junction Devices Through Materials Analysis, Process Integration And Circuit Simulation, Sankha S. Mukherjee
Theses
Spin based magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) consist of two ferromagnetic thin films separated by a nonmagnetic insulating barrier. The MTJ exhibits two switchable resistive states, making them ideal candidates for non-volatile memory. The discovery of high Tunneling Magnetoresistance (TMR) in MgO based MTJs has brought spintronics into the forefronts of modern technology. A device structure CoFeB|MgO|CoFeB achieved by physical vapor deposition (PVD) has revolutionized the hard-drive industry to go beyond densities of gigabyte per square inch. There is increasing interest in the application of these devices toward other technical areas, such as sensors, logic and reconfigurable computing. In these structures, …

Nutrient Cycles And Marine Microbes In A Co2-Enriched Ocean, David A. Hutchins, Margaret R. Mulholland, Feixue Fu
Nutrient Cycles And Marine Microbes In A Co2-Enriched Ocean, David A. Hutchins, Margaret R. Mulholland, Feixue Fu
OES Faculty Publications
The ocean carbon cycle is tightly linked with the cycles of the major nutrient elements nitrogen, phosphorus, and silicon. It is therefore likely that enrichment of the ocean with anthropogenic CO2 and attendant acidification will have large consequences for marine nutrient biogeochemistry, and for the microbes that mediate many key nutrient transformations. The best available evidence suggests that the nitrogen cycle may respond strongly to higher CO2 through increases in global N2 fixation and possibly denitrification, as well as potential decreases in nitrification. These trends could cause nitrification to become a nitrogen cycle "bottleneck," by increasing the flux of N2 …

The analysis of high-precision timing observations of an array of ∼20 millisecond pulsars (a so-called 'timing array') may ultimately result in the detection of a stochastic gravitational-wave background. The feasibility of such a detection and the required duration of this type of experiment are determined by the achievable rms of the timing residuals and the timing stability of the pulsars involved. We present results of the first long-term, high-precision timing campaign on a large sample of millisecond pulsars used in gravitational-wave detection projects. We show that the timing residuals of most pulsars in our sample do not contain significant low-frequency …

Vhf-Uhf Passive Filter Synthesis Based On Acoustic Resonator Structures, Melissa Sefton Dempsey
Vhf-Uhf Passive Filter Synthesis Based On Acoustic Resonator Structures, Melissa Sefton Dempsey
Theses
This thesis presents a novel design method for approximating standard bandpass filter transfer functions using surface acoustic wave (SAW) technology. This method is based on standard circuit simulation and optimization tools to generate physical specifications for the fabrication of a SAW impedance element filter (IEF) network. The IEF topology is verified in the design of a narrowband bandpass filter composed of commercial quartz SAW resonators. The utility of the design method is further demonstrated for a wider bandwidth filter based on custom resonators fabricated on a lithium niobate substrate. An optimum fit was obtained between the standard filter target response …
Design, Simulation, And Fabrication Of A Flow Sensor For An Implantable Micropump, Matthew J. Waldron
Design, Simulation, And Fabrication Of A Flow Sensor For An Implantable Micropump, Matthew J. Waldron
Theses
The design, simulation, and fabrication of a flow sensor to be integrated into an implantable micropump is presented. The flow sensor operates by the method of thermal anemometry, in which heat is dissipated from a resistive element held in the flow of the fluid. The rate at which heat is carried away is dependent on the flow rate and is directly related to the thermal conductance. A control circuit utilizing the constant-temperature anemometry mode of operation is used to generate a change in voltage in response to change in thermal conductance, and subsequently, flow rate. A mathematical expression describing the …

Design For Assembly Line Performance: The Link Between Dfa Metrics And Assembly Line Performance Metrics, Krishna Kamath
Design For Assembly Line Performance: The Link Between Dfa Metrics And Assembly Line Performance Metrics, Krishna Kamath
Theses
Design for Assembly (DFA) is a tool that has been in use for almost 40 years. While it has been a useful design tool, it is not explicitly linked to actual manufacturing line performance. The motivation for this research came from the desire to link DFA directly to line balance and cycle time performance. The natural question that arose was whether these issues could be considered at the design stage by using the metrics that are derived from a DFA analysis. It is known that the time required to assemble a product can be estimated from both a DFA analysis …

Crosscutting Issues In International Transformation: Interactions And Innovations Among People, Organizations, Processes, And Technology, Derrick J. Neal, Henrik Friman, Ralph Doughty, Linton Wells Ii
Books
This book is a compilation of papers presented at the International Transformation Conference in Stockholm, Sweden on June 2-3, 2009. The conference was hosted by the Swedish Defence Research Agency, FOI. The papers are organized according to the categories of culture, interagency, transformation initiatives, leadership, and adaptive organizations.
The complexities of the task make definitions of transformation a challenge and often open to debate. The unpredictable nature of the future international security environment defies a tightly bounded definition so the International Transformation Chairs have adopted an inclusive description: “Transformation is a process that shapes the changing nature of competition and …
Vaccination Nation: A Bioethical Feminist Inquiry Into The Political, Social And Ethical Controversy Surrounding The Human Papillomavirus Vaccine, Kirsten Keller Morin
Vaccination Nation: A Bioethical Feminist Inquiry Into The Political, Social And Ethical Controversy Surrounding The Human Papillomavirus Vaccine, Kirsten Keller Morin
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This theoretical inquiry has explored the political, social, and ethical controversy surrounding the government's push to mandate the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for adolescent girls. This vaccine has the potential of preventing cancer, specifically cervical cancer. There is a growing debate in this country whether this new HPV vaccine, Gardasil®, should be added to the list of school-mandated vaccines. Karen Houppert (2007) has stated that this particular "vaccine protects girls and women from cervical cancer and genital warts caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV)" (p. 17). So, what is the controversy? It all started with the fact that this vaccine …

Critical Narrative Of Multiracial Women's Personal Journey: Negotiating The Intersectionallity Of Race And Gender Issues In A Monoracial Paradigm, Geralda Silva Nelson
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The aim of this study was to examine how three women of color, mothers of Multiracial children, experience gender and racial identity issues in the context of United States; explore their choice of racial indicator for their children and the impact that raising multiracial children would have on their own racial identity. This study was informed by critical race feminist thought, framed by qualitative inquiry and oral history as research methodology. Throughout this study I have attempted to demonstrate that gender and race are significant factors in these three women's lived experiences. The participants' accounts revealed how different aspects of …
