Detection And Tracking Of Stealthy Targets Using Particle Filters, Philip M. Losie

Master's Theses

In recent years, the particle filter has gained prominence in the area of target tracking because it is robust to non-linear target motion and non-Gaussian additive noise. Traditional track filters, such as the Kalman filter, have been well studied for linear tracking applications, but perform poorly for non-linear applications. The particle filter has been shown to perform well in non-linear applications. The particle filter method is computationally intensive and advances in processor speed and computational power have allowed this method to be implemented in real-time tracking applications. This thesis explores the use of particle filters to detect and track stealthy …

A Performance Project With An Historical And Analytical Perspective On The Concerto For Alto Saxophone And Orchestra, Op. 31 By Peter Jona Korn, Brian Sanford Ransom

Dissertations

Peter Jona Korn (1922-1998) is not a name immediately recognized in American music circles, yet during the 1940s and '50s he led a successful career as an American composer. His Saxophone Concerto - composed in 1956 for the virtuoso Sigurd Rascher, and revised by Korn in 1982 - is an important contribution to the saxophone repertoire.

Many composers, including Glazounov, Ibert, and Larsson, wrote concertos for Sigurd Rascher. These works, once considered highly virtuosic, are now studied and performed by college level saxophonists. The original version of Korn's Concerto, among the most technically demanding works, has remained in obscurity for …

Cross-Border Banking: Threat Or Opportunity To Economic Growth And Financial Stability, Abiodun Adedipe Dec 2009

Cross-Border Banking: Threat Or Opportunity To Economic Growth And Financial Stability, Abiodun Adedipe

Economic and Financial Review

Cross-border banking was a major issue in economic growth and stability of the financial sector until banks became large in size, began to engage in international transactions directly from their home countries and later by establishing or acquiring banks across their borders, and the level of international activities of banks intensified through complex products that increased exposure to systemic risk and possible losses to the economy. There is evidence on both sides to the argument that cross-border banking is both a threat and an opportunity to economic growth and financial stability. This paper argues what must be done to ensure …

Cytotoxicity Effects Of Different Surfactant Molecules Conjugated To Carbon Nanotubes On Human Astrocytoma Cells, Lifeng Dong, Colette M. Witkowski, Michael M. Craig, Molly M. Greenwade, Katherine L. Joseph

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Phase contrast and epifluorescence microscopy were utilized to monitor morphological changes in human astrocytoma cells during a time-course exposure to single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) conjugates with different surfactants and to investigate sub-cellular distribution of the nanotube conjugates, respectively. Experimental results demonstrate that cytotoxicity of the nanotube/surfactant conjugates is related to the toxicity of surfactant molecules attached on the nanotube surfaces. Both sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) are toxic to cells. Exposure to CNT/SDS conjugates (0.5 mg/mL) for less than 5 min caused changes in cell morphology resulting in a distinctly spherical shape compared to untreated cells. …

Angular Rigidity In 3d: Combinatorial Characterizations And Algorithms, Audrey Lee-St.John, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Constraint-based CAD software, used by engineers to design sophisticated mechanical systems, relies on a wide range of geometrical constraints. In this paper we focus on one special case: angular constraints in 3D. We give a complete combinatorial characterization for generic minimal rigidity in two new models: line- plane-and-angle and body-and-angle structures. As an immediate consequence, we obtain efficient algorithms for analyzing angular rigidity.

Block Modeling With Multiple Fault Network Geometries And A Linear Elastic Coupling Estimator In Spherical Coordinates, Brendan J. Meade, John P. Loveless Dec 2009

Block Modeling With Multiple Fault Network Geometries And A Linear Elastic Coupling Estimator In Spherical Coordinates, Brendan J. Meade, John P. Loveless

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Geodetic observations of interseismic deformation provide constraints on the partitioning of fault slip across plate boundary zones, the spatial distribution of both elastic and inelastic strain accumulation, and the nature of the fault system evolution. Here we describe linear block theory, which decomposes surface velocity fields into four components: (1) plate rotations, (2) elastic deformation from faults with kinematically consistent slip rates, (3) elastic deformation from faults with spatially variable coupling, and (4) homogeneous intrablock strain. Elastic deformation rates are computed for each fault segment in a homogeneous elastic half-space using multiple optimal planar Cartesian coordinate systems to minimize areal …
