Collection curators develop locally defined unique fields to support local requirements. As per the guidelines of the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH), Simple Dublin Core is the minimum requirement for exposing metadata to aggregators. Oftentimes the level of specificity of unique local fields is not translated well to Dublin Core, which may hinder the interoperability of the item metadata record. This paper researched 21 digital collections that were hosted in CONTENTdm. The objective was to explore the use and issues of unique fields in local context and recommend best practices that will increase the interoperability of metadata …

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Phase variable expression, mediated by high frequency reversible changes in the length of simple sequence repeats, facilitates adaptation of bacterial populations to changing environments and is frequently important in bacterial virulence. Here we elucidate a novel phase variable mechanism for NadA, an adhesin and invasin of Neisseria meningitidis. The NadR repressor protein binds to operators flanking the phase variable tract and contributes to the differential expression levels of phase variant promoters with different numbers of repeats likely due to different spacing between operators. We show that IHF binds between these operators, and may permit looping of the promoter, allowing interaction …

Cellular Biophysics During Freezing Of Rat And Mouse Sperm Predicts Post-Thaw Motility, Mie Hagiwara, Jeung Hwan Choi, Ramachandra V. Devireddy, Kenneth P. Roberts, Willem F. Wolkers, Antoine Makhlouf, John C. Bischof

Faculty Publications

Though cryopreservation of mouse sperm yields good survival and motility after thawing, cryopreservation of rat sperm remains a challenge. This study was designed to evaluate the biophysics (membrane permeability) of rat in comparison to mouse to better understand the cooling rate response that contributes to cryopreservation success or failure in these two sperm types. In order to extract subzero membrane hydraulic permeability in the presence of ice, a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) method was used. By analyzing rat and mouse sperm frozen at 5°C/min and 20°C/min, heat release signatures characteristic of each sperm type were obtained and correlated to cellular …

Meso-Scale Heating Predictions For Weak Impact Of Granular Energetic Solids, Rohan Panchadhar, Keith A. Gonthier Dec 2009

Meso-Scale Heating Predictions For Weak Impact Of Granular Energetic Solids, Rohan Panchadhar, Keith A. Gonthier

Faculty Publications

An explicit, 2-D, Lagrangian finite and discrete element technique is used to characterize thermo-mechanical fluctuations in low pressure deformation waves propagating through particulate energetic solids. The technique combines conservation principles with a plane strain, thermoelastic-viscoplastic and friction constitutive theory to describe deformation and motion of individual particles; interaction between particles is described using an energy consistent, penalty based contact method. Emphasis is placed on characterizing the relative importance of volumetric and surface dissipation as meso-scale heating mechanisms. Predictions indicate that volumetric dissipation locally heats significant mass to modest temperatures, whereas surface dissipation locally heats a small fraction of mass to …

Novel Reconfigurable Randomized Broadcast Algorithm For Channel-Aware Wireless Networks, Scott C.H. Huang, Shih Yu Chang, Hsiao Chun Wu, Peng Jun Wan

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we study the channel-aware minimum-latency broadcast scheduling problem using the probabilistic model. We establish an explicit relationship between the tolerated transmission-failure probability and the latency of the corresponding broadcast schedule. Such a tolerated transmission-failure probability is calculated in the strict sense that the failure to receive the message at any single node will lead to the entire broadcast failure and only if all nodes have successfully received the message, do we consider it a successful broadcast. We design a novel reconfigurable broadcast scheduling algorithm such that the latency is evaluated under such a strict definition of failure. …

Vol. 1 No. 1, Fall 2009; Current Trends In Inequitable Conduct Are Adverse To Patent Policy As Seen Through The Exemplary Case Of Big Pharma, Joshua M. Austin

Northern Illinois Law Review Supplement

This Comment explores the rather difficult and rapidly changing field of patent law, discussing specifically the doctrine of inequitable conduct, a defense raised by the infringing party by which a patent can be rendered unenforceable. Recent trends in inequitable conduct, as it has been used by the Federal Circuit, have made this confusing area of law even more so. This comment identifies these confusions and the Federal Circuit's failure to maintain clear cut precedent. This Comment further discusses the impacts of these current trends, postulating that these trends go so far as to undercut the principal policy purposes behind patent …

Space-Efficient Framework For Top-K String Retrieval Problems, Wing Kai Hon, Rahul Shah, Jeffrey Scott Vitter Dec 2009

Space-Efficient Framework For Top-K String Retrieval Problems, Wing Kai Hon, Rahul Shah, Jeffrey Scott Vitter

Faculty Publications

Given a set D = {d1,d2, ⋯, dD} of D strings of total length n, our task is to report the "most relevant" strings for a given query pattern P. This involves somewhat more advanced query functionality than the usual pattern matching, as some notion of "most relevant" is involved. In information retrieval literature, this task is best achieved by using inverted indexes. However, inverted indexes work only for some predefined set of patterns. In the pattern matching community, the most popular pattern-matching data structures are suffix trees and suffix arrays. However, a typical suffix tree search involves going through …

Comparison Of The Differential Roles Of Sphingosine Kinase (Sk) Isoenzymes In Tumor Cells And Characterization Of Sk-Isoenzyme Selective Inhibitors, Peng Gao Dec 2009

Comparison Of The Differential Roles Of Sphingosine Kinase (Sk) Isoenzymes In Tumor Cells And Characterization Of Sk-Isoenzyme Selective Inhibitors, Peng Gao

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Sphingosine kinases (SK) are promising therapeutic targets for cancer because they regulate the balance between pro-apoptotic ceramides and mitogenic sphingosine-1 phosphate (S1P); however, the functions of the two isoenzymes (SK1 and Sk2) in tumor cells are not well defined, and the systemically comparison of the anti-cancer effects from SK isoform selective inhibitors is elusive. Therefore, firstly, RNA interference was used to assess the individual roles of SK1 and SK2 in tumor cell sphingolipid metabolism, proliferation and migration/invasion. Treatment of A498, Caki-1 or MDA-MB-231 cells with siRNA specific for SK1 and SK2 effectively suppressed the expression of the target mRNA and …

Effects Of Aggregate Angularity On Mix Design Characteristics And Pavement Performance, Yong-Rak Kim, Leonardo T. Souza

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

This research targeted two primary purposes: to estimate current aggregate angularity test methods and to evaluate current aggregate angularity requirements in the Nebraska asphalt mixture/pavement specification. To meet the first research objective, various aggregate angularity tests were estimated with the same sets of aggregates and were compared by investigating their characteristics on testing repeatability, cost, testing time, workability, and sensitivity of test results. For the second objective, the effect of aggregate angularity on mixture performance was investigated by conducting laboratory performance tests (the uniaxial static creep test and the indirect tensile fracture energy test) of five mixes designed with different …

Deliberative Democracy And Inequality: Two Cheers For Enclave Deliberation Among The Disempowered, Christopher F. Karpowitz, Chad Raphael, Allen S. Hammond Iv Dec 2009

Deliberative Democracy And Inequality: Two Cheers For Enclave Deliberation Among The Disempowered, Christopher F. Karpowitz, Chad Raphael, Allen S. Hammond Iv

Communication

Deliberative democracy grounds its legitimacy largely in the ability of speakers to participate on equal terms. Yet theorists and practitioners have struggled with how to establish deliberative equality in the face of stark differences of power in liberal democracies. Designers of innovative civic forums for deliberation often aim to neutralize inequities among participants through proportional inclusion of disempowered speakers and discourses. In contrast, others argue that democratic equality is best achieved when disempowered groups deliberate in their own enclaves (interest groups, parties, and movements) before entering the broader public sphere. Borrowing from each perspective, the authors argue that there are …

One hundred surveys were distributed to medical personnel and pharmaceutical prescription consumers in both the Bay Area and San Luis Obispo …

Reactor R&D: Synthesis And Optimization Of Metallic Nitride Fullerenes And The Introduction Of Two New Classes Of Endohedral Metallofullerenes, Metallic Nitride Azafullerenes And Oxo-Metallic Fullerenes, Curtis Earl Coumbe Dec 2009

Reactor R&D: Synthesis And Optimization Of Metallic Nitride Fullerenes And The Introduction Of Two New Classes Of Endohedral Metallofullerenes, Metallic Nitride Azafullerenes And Oxo-Metallic Fullerenes, Curtis Earl Coumbe

Dissertations

Metallic nitride fullerenes (MNFs) were discovered in 1999. This class of endohedral fullerenes show promise in a new diverse range of useful applications. Since then, focus has shifted to the selective synthesis of these molecules with yields that would accommodate adequate sample distribution. Using the electric arc method, the traditional yield of these molecules has been very low (i.e. < 5 mg), and only a small percentage of the fullerene products (i.e. < 5%). This dissertation introduces the novel CAPTEAR (Chemically Adjusting Plasma Temperature, Energy, And Reactivity) method that allows the targeted synthesis of MNFs in high purity and yield. This method utilizes a nontraditional oxidizing method for fullerene synthesis that has not only provided optimization of MNFs, but also resulted in the discovery of two new classes of fullerenes: metallic nitride azafullerenes (MNAFs) and oxo-metallic fullerenes (OMFs). Evidence suggests that the nitrogen of the MNAF cage provides stability for the trimetallic nitride clusters, while the OMFs are the first fullerenes to encapsulate oxygen and incorporate a seven atom cluster inside a Cgo cage.

Other efforts to increase yields resulted from scaling up production of fullerenes by using larger quantities of starting materials. These larger quantities required energy (electrical current) beyond the capacity of the traditional electric arc generator. Therefore, a new electric arc generator …

Comparison Of Eye Movement Data To Direct Measures Of Situation Awareness For Development Of A Novel Measurement Technique In Dynamic, Uncontrolled Test Environments, Kristin Moore Dec 2009

Comparison Of Eye Movement Data To Direct Measures Of Situation Awareness For Development Of A Novel Measurement Technique In Dynamic, Uncontrolled Test Environments, Kristin Moore

All Dissertations

Situation awareness (SA) is a measure of an individual's knowledge and understanding of the current and expected future states of a situation. While there are numerous options for SA measurement, none are currently suitable in dynamic, uncontrolled environments. Direct measures of SA are the most common, but require a large amount of researcher control as well as the ability to stop operators during a task in order to ask questions about their levels of SA. The current research explored the relationship between direct measures of SA and eye tracking measures as a first step in the development of an unobtrusive …

Bridging The Operational Divide: An Information-Processing Model Of Internal Supply Chain Integration, Ana Rosado Feger Dec 2009

Bridging The Operational Divide: An Information-Processing Model Of Internal Supply Chain Integration, Ana Rosado Feger

All Dissertations

Supply Chain Management, the coordination of upstream and downstream flows of product, services, finances, and information from a source to a customer, has risen in prominence over the past fifteen years. The delivery of a product to the consumer is a complex process requiring action from several independent entities. An individual firm consists of multiple functional departments, each responsible for one aspect of customer service. In the traditional corporate structure of functional silos, there is little communication between Purchasing, Manufacturing, and Logistics, and yet these departments comprise three core supply chain processes of a firm. Ironically, managers report that it …

Reaching Beyond The "Moron": Eugenic Control Of Secondary Disability Groups, Gerald V. O'Brien, Meghan E. Bundy Dec 2009

Reaching Beyond The "Moron": Eugenic Control Of Secondary Disability Groups, Gerald V. O'Brien, Meghan E. Bundy

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

While much has been published about the American eugenics movement, few authors have considered the relative status of various disability populations as targets of eugenic control. While many writers focus on persons diagnosed as feeble-minded as the central focus of control, little has been written regarding the status of additional disability groups. This is important since, as described here, a central component of coming to understand past social injustices against marginalized groups and the contemporary relevance of such injustices is gaining an awareness of why specific populations were accepted by control authorities as appropriate or viable targets for control measures.
