Sensor-Based Soil Water Monitoring To More Effectively Manage Agricultural Water Resources In Coastal Plain Soils, Christopher Bellamy Dec 2009

Sensor-Based Soil Water Monitoring To More Effectively Manage Agricultural Water Resources In Coastal Plain Soils, Christopher Bellamy

All Theses

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is widely grown in the United States with 5.7 million ha grown nationally and 1.2 million ha grown in the humid southeastern states in 2005. From 1969 to 2003, agricultural irrigated farmland acreage and total water applied increased by over 40% and 11% respectively to include a total of 55.3 million acres in 2002. Combined with recent and more frequent drought periods and legal water conflicts between states, there has been an increased interest in more effective southeastern water management, thus making the need to develop improved irrigation scheduling methods and enhanced water use efficiency of …

An Animation Framework For Improving The Comprehension Of Tinyos Programs, Sravanthi Dandamudi Dec 2009

An Animation Framework For Improving The Comprehension Of Tinyos Programs, Sravanthi Dandamudi

All Theses

To meet the increasing demand for monitoring of the physical world, there has been an increase in the development of wireless sensor network applications. The TinyOS platform has emerged as a de facto standard for developing these applications. The platform offers a number of advantages, with its support for concurrency, power-efficient operation, and resource-constrained hardware chief among them. However, the benefits come at a price. Even without the TinyOS platform, the inherent parallel and distributed nature of these applications makes it difficult for developers to reason about program behavior. Further, the TinyOS programming model adopts
asynchronous, split-phase execution semantics. Developers …

Thermochromic Absorption And Photoluminescence In [Pt(Ppy)(Μ-Ph2pz)]2, Aaron A. Rachford, Felix N. Castellano

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The temperature effects on the spectral properties and photophysics of a new d(8)-d(8) dinuclear Pt-II chromophore, [Pt(ppy)(mu-Ph(2)pz)](2) (ppy is 2-phenylpyridine and Ph(2)pz is 3,5-diphenylpyrazolate), have been investigated. The thermochromic shifts are tentatively ascribed to intramolecular sigma interactions between the two pseudocofacial d(Z2) orbitals. Substantial emission profile changes occur in the solid state, solution, and doped polymer films.

Modeling The Fluorescence Of Protein-Embedded Tryptophans With Ab Initio Multiconfigurational Quantum Chemistry: The Limiting Cases Of Parvalbumin And Monellin, Sara Pistolesi, Adalgisa Sinicropi, Rebecca Pogni, Riccardo Basosi, Nicolas Ferre, Massimo Olivucci

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We show that a quantum-mechanics/molecular-mechanics strategy based on ab initio (i.e., first principle) multiconfigurational perturbation theory can reproduce the spectral properties of a tryptophan residue embedded in the contrasting hydrophobic and hydrophilic environments of parvalbumin and monellin, respectively. We show that the observed absorption and emission energies can be reproduced with a less than 3 kcal mol(-1) error. The analysis of the computed emission energies based on a protein disassembly scheme and protein electrostatic potential mapping allows for a detailed understanding of the factors modulating the tryptophan emission. It is shown that for rnonellin, where the tryptophan is exposed to …

Ritual Characteristic Congruence Between Consumers’ Consumption And Production Practices, Shannon Cummins, Sanford Grossbart Dec 2009

Ritual Characteristic Congruence Between Consumers’ Consumption And Production Practices, Shannon Cummins, Sanford Grossbart

Marketing & Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications

This paper explores characteristic congruencies between ritual consumption and ritual production. While ritual consumption and coproduction are topics of study in marketing, ritual production has not been explored. This paper expands upon previous research on ritual consumption to develop a typology of ritual production including four metaphors: production-asexperience, production-as-classification, production-as-play, and production-as-integration. The typology is used to provide a framework for understanding the ritual tendencies of individuals who engage in ritual production and consumption in materialist and nonmaterialist ways.

Auction & Bidwatching, Siddharth Machiraju Dec 2009

Auction & Bidwatching, Siddharth Machiraju

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

Auctions are among the oldest economic institutions in place. They have been used since antiquity to sell a wide variety of goods, and their basic form has remained unchanged. In this dissertation, we explore the efficiency of common auctions when values are interdependent- the value to a particular bidder may depend on information available only to others-and asymmetric. In this setting, it is well known that sealed-bid auctions do not achieve efficient allocations in general since they do not allow the information held by different bidders to be shared. Auction & Bid Watching concept deals with the Online Auction & …

Mechanical Engineering

A clam shell module cover for printed circuit boards (PCB) has been designed for use in Boeing’s AECM cabinet. The cover utilizes materials with high thermal conductivity and cools the PCB by conducting the heat to a cold plate interface. Materials were compared and aluminum 6061-T6, aluminum 3003, and annealed pyrolytic graphite (APG) were chosen. A prototype was built and tested using aluminum 6061-T6 which was able to dissipate 57.7% of the projected wattage. Issues may include unforeseen complications in assembly along with components performing at lower levels than specified by manufacturers. The APG prototype was unable to be tested …

Best-In-Class Global Bumper Reinforcement Beam, Garret Anthony Bautista, Chad Anthony Hardin, Benjamin Ray Taylor Dec 2009

Best-In-Class Global Bumper Reinforcement Beam, Garret Anthony Bautista, Chad Anthony Hardin, Benjamin Ray Taylor

Mechanical Engineering

Modern bumper systems are governed by laws and regulations imposed separately by various countries. Today, the regulations in China, North America, and Europe are becoming more similar, but there is not a widely accepted bumper reinforcement that meets the requirements of all markets around the globe.

A universal bumper reinforcement beam incorporating Plug-n-Play techniques was developed to meet and exceed all testing requirements and performance standards of each country. These Plug-n-Play techniques consist of adding energy absorbing attachments to the front of a base bumper beam. Simple beam analysis and FEA were the primary analysis tools in the development of …

Section of Gastroenterology

PURPOSE:

We aimed to study the role of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) in non-acetaminophen-induced acute liver failure (NAI-ALF).

METHODS:

A total of 47 adult patients were prospectively enrolled with NAI-ALF (group 1 or NAC group) and oral NAC was given. The primary outcome was reduction in mortality with the use of NAC in NAI-ALF. The secondary outcomes were to evaluate safety of NAC and to assess factors predicting mortality. We compared these results with records of NAI-ALF patients admitted in our hospital from 2000 to 2003 (n = 44) who were not given NAC (group 2 or historical controls).

RESULTS:

The two …

Monodisperse FePt nanoparticles with controlled size and geometry have drawn great attention in the last decade for fundamental scientific studies and for their potential applications in advanced materials and devices such as ultra-high-density magnetic recording media, exchange-coupled nanocomposite magnets, biomedicines and nanodevices. This dissertation focuses on the synthesis and characterization of FePt nanoparticles and their use in potential applications. The FePt nanoparticles of different size (2 to 16 nm) and shape (spherical, cubic, rod) were synthesized by a chemical solution method. The size and shape of these particles were controlled by adjusting reaction parameters. The as-synthesized FePt nanoparticles have chemically …

Overrepresentation Of Minority Students Enrolled In Special Education, Katie Bower Dec 2009

Overrepresentation Of Minority Students Enrolled In Special Education, Katie Bower

Education Masters

As studied in recent years, there is a growing number of minority students who are enrolled in special education around the country. In many schools, the percentage of minority students in special education compared to the total number of minority students is surprisingly high. The purpose of this study was to determine if this was true for schools in the Rochester, New York region. As a teacher, I wanted to learn more about why the high percentage of minority students in special education existed so that I can better serve the students that I work with. If we know why …

The Absurdity In Samuel Beckett, Quianna Juawanda Glapion Dec 2009

The Absurdity In Samuel Beckett, Quianna Juawanda Glapion

Theses (Pre-2016)

Samuel Beckett became famous as a dramatist after his publication of Waiting for Godot in 1951. My thesis concentrates on three .of Beckett's plays. These plays place him in the Theatre of the Absurd which is one of the major movements in drama following World War II. Between 1950 and 1960 this literary movement also connected other dramatists such as Edward Albee, Harold Pinter and Jean Genet. According to Albert Camus's essay, "The Myth of Sisyphus," the work of these artists is an expression of their own personal experience and world outlook. Camus also reveals that the emotions of absurdity …

A Critical Examination Of Luke 15: 11-32, No Author

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"The parable of the prodigal son is arguably one of the most well-known and frequently referenced parables of Jesus. Although the story is attributed to Jesus of Nazareth, it cannot be said with certainty that it did, in fact, originate with Jesus. Nevertheless, biblical scholars, theologians, clergy, and laypersons alike have deemed the text worthy of analysis and interpretation throughout the centuries. As scholar Charles W. Hedrick establishes in his work Parables as Poetic Fictions, it is imperative that the content of a parable be considered in its constitutive …
