Board Level Strategic Decision-Making: Process Characteristics And Context, Bernard C. Bailey Dec 2009

Board Level Strategic Decision-Making: Process Characteristics And Context, Bernard C. Bailey

Student Scholarship

How do boards make strategic decisions? Semi-structured interviews with twenty eight directors of small to medium size publicly traded U.S. companies in the high technology sector were conducted in order to gain insights into strategic decision-making at the board level. We identified six characteristics that distinguish two divergent views about strategic decision-making. These characteristics include the role of the board chair, the boardroom climate, the board's shared vision and goals, the board's agency primacy, the board's process for decision closure and the board's level of involvement in the strategic planning process.

Inhibition Of Pi 3-Kinase Signaling Contributes To Metronidazole Resistance In The Protozoan Parasite, Entamoeba Histolytica, Rhonda Powell Dec 2009

Inhibition Of Pi 3-Kinase Signaling Contributes To Metronidazole Resistance In The Protozoan Parasite, Entamoeba Histolytica, Rhonda Powell

All Theses

Amoebiasis is defined as an intestinal infection with the human protozoan parasite, Entamoeba histolytica; approximately 100,000 deaths annually can be attributed to amoebiasis. Disease states range from asymptomatic colonization to invasive amoebiasis, characterized by abdominal pain and dysentery. Dissemination to extraintestinal sites, such as the liver and/or brain, can occur. Vesicle trafficking is critical for parasite virulence, and multiple signaling cascades within the pathogen facilitate these events.
One important regulator of signal transduction is the tightly controlled PI 3-kinase (PI3K), which phosphorylates the lipid, phosphatidylinositol bisphosphate (PIP2), producing phosphatidylinositol trisphosphate (PIP3). Effector proteins, such as Akt, …

Administrative Law, Martin M. Wilson, Jennifer A. Blackburn Dec 2009

Administrative Law, Martin M. Wilson, Jennifer A. Blackburn

Mercer Law Review

Administrative procedure is rarely the topic of after-hours conversations, trailing far behind baseball scores, what to eat, and famous personalities. However, the continuing creep of influence of administrative agencies impacts daily life far beyond casual observations. It is the work of administrative agencies that propels government on all fronts. This Article surveys chosen cases from the Georgia Supreme Court and the Georgia Court of Appeals from June 1, 2008 through May 31, 2009. Cases from specific subject areas that one would expect to see in other articles contained in this volume have not been included unless points regarding administrative law …

Solomon Hailu, "A New Start for African Security," International Journal on World Peace 26 (4), 63-73

The collapse of the cold war and Africa's increasing openness in the face of globalization and democratization have brought the dissolution of old patterns of political affiliation and radical shift in Africa's post-cold war security paradigm. The article explores regional and international dynamics of conflict in post-cold war Africa and analyzes the evolving regional arrangement, particularly, the Africa Union's attempts to resolve the current conflicts in Africa.

Economics Of The Super Bowl, Victor Matheson Dec 2009

Economics Of The Super Bowl, Victor Matheson

Economics Department Working Papers

The Super Bowl is America’s premier sporting event. This paper details basic economic facts about the game as examines the controversy surrounding the purported economic impact of the game on host communities. While the league and sports boosters claim that the game brings up to a $500 million economic impact to host cities, a review of the literature suggests that the true economic impact is a fraction of this amount.

A Contrast Pattern Based Clustering Quality Index For Categorical Data, Qingbao Liu, Guozhu Dong Dec 2009

A Contrast Pattern Based Clustering Quality Index For Categorical Data, Qingbao Liu, Guozhu Dong

Kno.e.sis Publications

Since clustering is unsupervised and highly explorative, clustering validation (i.e. assessing the quality of clustering solutions) has been an important and long standing research problem. Existing validity measures have significant shortcomings. This paper proposes a novel contrast pattern based clustering quality index (CPCQ) for categorical data, by utilizing the quality and diversity of the contrast patterns (CPs) which contrast the clusters in clusterings. High quality CPs can characterize clusters and discriminate them against each other. Experiments show that the CPCQ index (1) can recognize that expert-determined classes are the best clusters for many datasets from the UCI repository; (2) does …

Evening Primrose Oil, Bryan Bayles, Richard Usatine Dec 2009

Evening Primrose Oil, Bryan Bayles, Richard Usatine

Public Health (Archived)

Evening primrose oil (Oenothera biennis) is a commonly used alternative therapy and a rich source of omega-6 essential fatty acids. It is best known for its use in the treatment of systemic diseases marked by chronic inflammation, such as atopic dermatitis and rheumatoid arthritis. It is often used for several women’s health conditions, including breast pain (mastalgia), menopausal and premenstrual symptoms, cervical ripening, and labor induction or augmentation. However, there is insufficient evidence to make a reliable assessment of its effectiveness for most clinical indications. The current evidence suggests that oral evening primrose oil does not provide clinically significant improvement …

Attorney Referral, Negligence, And Vicarious Liability, Bruce Ching Dec 2009

Attorney Referral, Negligence, And Vicarious Liability, Bruce Ching

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Attorneys commonly refer clients to other attorneys.  Despite this routine practice, only a few jurisdictions have considered whether a referring attorney can be held liable for  a client’s loss when the attorney who receives the referral commits malpractice. This paper analyzes the three approaches used by courts in such situations, along with relevant provisions from the Model Code of Professional Responsibility and the Model Rules of Professional Conduct.  First, the Michigan/Pennsylvania approach completely precludes liability for negligent attorney referral.  Second, the Florida/Illinois approach holds a referring attorney vicariously liable when he or she receives a fee for making the referral. …

Patent Expertise And The Regress Of Useful Arts, Andrew W. Torrance, Bill Tomlinson Dec 2009

Patent Expertise And The Regress Of Useful Arts, Andrew W. Torrance, Bill Tomlinson

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Recent studies and findings have unveiled that patent systems may not accomplish the goal of technological progress as well as a commons system, at least in terms of innovation, productivity, and social utility.  Employing The Patent Game, a multi-user interactive simulation of patent and non-patent (commons and open source) systems, the authors of this Article are currently comparing rates of innovation, productivity, and social utility, but with expert users possessing formal expertise in patent law and open innovation.

This Article presents results of this study, which indicates no statistically significant difference in rates of innovation among a pure patent system, …

In Re Marriage Of Matchen, 866 N.E.2d 683 (Ill. App. Ct. 2007): Illinois Removal Standards Do Not Match Up With The Current National Trend, Misty Edwards Dec 2009

In Re Marriage Of Matchen, 866 N.E.2d 683 (Ill. App. Ct. 2007): Illinois Removal Standards Do Not Match Up With The Current National Trend, Misty Edwards

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

The Illinois Marriage and Dissolution of Marriage Act provides that a parent who wishes to move out of the state of Illinois with a child must first petition the court for permission.  The court then bases its decision whether the child may be removed on the "best interests of the child" standard.  This Casenote examines the difficulty of applying the "best interests of the child" standard and advocates that Illinois adopt a standard favoring the present national trend: the ability of a custodial parent to move out of state unless motivated by bad faith.
