All The Beef To The Heels Were In: Advertising And Plenty In Joyce's Ulysses, Mindy Jo Ratcliff Dec 2009

All The Beef To The Heels Were In: Advertising And Plenty In Joyce's Ulysses, Mindy Jo Ratcliff

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Privileging a historicist approach, this document explores the presence of consumer culture, particularly advertising, in James Joyce's seminal modernist novel, Ulysses (1922). It interrogates Joyce's awareness of how a broad upswing in Ireland's post-Famine economy precipitated advertising-intensive consumerism in both rural and urban Ireland. Foci include the late-nineteenth century transition in agriculture from arable farming to cattle-growing (grazier pastoralism), which, spurring economic growth, facilitated the emergence of a strong farmer rural bourgeoisie. The thesis considers how Ulysses inscribes and critiques that relatively affluent coterie's expenditures on domestic cultural tourism, as well as hygiene-related products, whose presence on the Irish scene …

Reinforcement Learning For Model Building And Variance-Penalized Control, Abhijit Gosavi Dec 2009

Reinforcement Learning For Model Building And Variance-Penalized Control, Abhijit Gosavi

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Reinforcement learning (RL) is a simulation-Based technique to solve Markov decision problems or processes (MDPs). It is especially useful if the transition probabilities in the MDP are hard to find or if the number of states in the problem is too large. in this paper, we present a new model-Based RL algorithm that builds the transition probability model without the generation of the transition probabilities; the literature on model-Based RL attempts to compute the transition probabilities. We also present a variance-penalized Bellman equation and an RL algorithm that uses it to solve a variance-penalized MDP. We conclude with some numerical …

Electrical-Thermal Co-Analysis For Power Delivery Networks In 3d System Integration, Jianyong Xie, Daehyun Chung, Madhavan Swaminathan, Michael Mcallister, Alina Deutsch, Lijun Jiang, Barry J. Rubin Dec 2009

Electrical-Thermal Co-Analysis For Power Delivery Networks In 3d System Integration, Jianyong Xie, Daehyun Chung, Madhavan Swaminathan, Michael Mcallister, Alina Deutsch, Lijun Jiang, Barry J. Rubin

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, an electrical-thermal co-analysis method for power delivery networks in 3D system integration is proposed. For electrical analysis, temperature-dependent electrical resistivity of conductors is taken into account. For thermal analysis, Joule heating effect due to the current flowing through conductors is considered. The proposed co-analysis method is carried out using Rgen and ChipJoule of IBM EIP Tool Suite. An example of 3D integration system including stacked chips, power delivery network, glass-ceramic substrate, through-silicon vias, controlled collapse chip connections (C4s), underfill material, and TIM is analyzed using the proposed method. The simulation results show that the temperature effect on …

Unit Commitment With Vehicle-To-Grid Using Particle Swarm Optimization, Ahmed Yousuf Saber, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy Dec 2009

Unit Commitment With Vehicle-To-Grid Using Particle Swarm Optimization, Ahmed Yousuf Saber, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology has drawn great interest in the recent years. Success of the V2G research depends on efficient scheduling of grid able vehicles in limited parking lots. V2G can reduce dependencies on small expensive units in the existing power systems as energy storage that can decrease running costs. It can efficiently manage load fluctuation, peak load; however, it increases spinning reserves and reliability. as number of grid able vehicles in V2G is much higher than small units of existing systems, unit commitment (UC) with V2G is more complex than basic UC for thermal units. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is …

(E,2e) Study Of Two-Center Interference Effects In The Ionization Of N₂, Leigh R. Hargreaves, Christopher J. Colyer, Mark A. Stevenson, B. Lohmann, Ola A. Al-Hagan, Don H. Madison, Chuangang Ning Dec 2009

(E,2e) Study Of Two-Center Interference Effects In The Ionization Of N₂, Leigh R. Hargreaves, Christopher J. Colyer, Mark A. Stevenson, B. Lohmann, Ola A. Al-Hagan, Don H. Madison, Chuangang Ning

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A number of previous studies have suggested the possibility of two-center interference effects in the single ionization of diatomic molecules such as H2 and N2. While interference effects have been successfully observed in the ionization of H2, to date evidence for interference in N2 ionization has yet to be conclusively demonstrated. This study presents triply differential cross sections for electron impact ionization of N2, measured using the (e,2e) technique. The data are probed for signatures of two-center interference effects. Evidence for interference manifesting in the cross sections is observed.

Nonlinear Evolution Of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations From Improved Perturbation Theory In Real And Redshift Spaces, Atsushi Taruya, Takahiro Nishimichi, Shun Saito, Takashi Hiramatsu Dec 2009

Nonlinear Evolution Of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations From Improved Perturbation Theory In Real And Redshift Spaces, Atsushi Taruya, Takahiro Nishimichi, Shun Saito, Takashi Hiramatsu

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the nonlinear evolution of baryon acoustic oscillations in the matter power spectrum and correlation function from the improved perturbation theory (PT). Based on the framework of renormalized PT, which provides a nonperturbative way to treat the gravitational clustering of large-scale structure, we apply the closure approximation that truncates the infinite series of loop contributions at one-loop order, and obtain a closed set of integral equations for power spectrum and nonlinear propagator. The resultant integral expressions are basically equivalent to those previously derived in the form of evolution equations, and they keep important nonperturbative properties which can dramatically improve …

Cloned Meat, Voluntary Food Labeling, And Organic Oreos, Donna M. Byrne Dec 2009

Cloned Meat, Voluntary Food Labeling, And Organic Oreos, Donna M. Byrne

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “In December 2006, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it had reviewed all the available evidence and was poised to approve meat and milk from cloned animals and their progeny. I remember telling one of my colleagues, a patent law professor, who should be as comfortable with technology as anyone, about this development, and his response was, “Yuck. I’m not eating it!” To which of course I replied, “Humph. You won’t know the difference.” Meat or milk from a clone or its descendant is virtually identical to meat or milk from a non-clone, said the FDA, as …

Egyptian Goddess, Inc. V. Swisa, Inc.: A Dramatic Change In The Law Of Design Patents?, Evan Szarenski

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “On September 22, 2008, the Federal Circuit, sitting en banc, handed down the most important decision in design patent law in nearly twenty-five years. Egyptian Goddess, Inc. v. Swisa, Inc. (Egyptian Goddess III) abolished the point-of-novelty test first set out in Sears, Roebuck & Co. v. Talge and adopted by the Federal Circuit in Litton Systems, Inc. v. Whirlpool Corp. The point-of novelty test required patent holders to prove that an accused design appropriated the element which sets the patented design apart from the prior art—in addition to the ordinary-observer standard’s requirement of having substantially the same appearance—in order …

L’Art De L’« Écrire » Chez Patrick Chamoiseau, Savrina Parevadee Chinien Dec 2009

L’Art De L’« Écrire » Chez Patrick Chamoiseau, Savrina Parevadee Chinien

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

In the works of Patrick Chamoiseau, the act of writing is a main, recurrent theme. The narrator, often, tries to define himself through his writings which have their own autonomy in the novel. This character questions his writing and is torn by the dissatisfaction he feels to get close to the “breath” of the creole storyteller : the chasm between orality and writing creates suffering. He, then, advocates l’“écrire”, closer, according to him, to the utterance of the storyteller and free of the “constraints” of an occidental writing, which he considers as stamped by the ideology of the Universal.

Transit “Pass-Through” Lanes At Freeway Interchanges: A Life-Cycle Evaluation Methodology, Michael Mandelzys, Bruce Hellinga Dec 2009

Transit “Pass-Through” Lanes At Freeway Interchanges: A Life-Cycle Evaluation Methodology, Michael Mandelzys, Bruce Hellinga

Journal of Public Transportation

Transit “pass-through” lanes provide transit vehicle priority at freeway interchanges. “Pass-through” lanes allow a transit vehicle to exit the freeway at an interchange, cross straight through the intersecting arterial road, and re-enter the freeway. This treatment allows transit vehicles to bypass congestion on the mainline between the beginning of the off-ramp and the end of the on-ramp. This paper outlines a methodology to evaluate if transit “pass-through” lanes are economically justified at a given interchange and provides a method for prioritizing candidate locations. The methodology provides an objective and consistent decision making method, reduces the effort required for practitioners to …

Design Of Transit Signal Priority At Signalized Intersections With Queue Jumper Lanes, Guangwei Zhou, Albert Gan Dec 2009

Design Of Transit Signal Priority At Signalized Intersections With Queue Jumper Lanes, Guangwei Zhou, Albert Gan

Journal of Public Transportation

A queue jumper lane is a special bus preferential treatment that combines a short stretch of a special lane with a transit signal priority (TSP) to allow buses to bypass waiting queues of traffic and then to cut out in front of the queue by getting an early green signal. This paper first proposes a signal control design for queue jumper lanes with actuated TSP strategies and then compares its performance with that of the general actuated mixed-lane TSP. Different design alternatives were evaluated in the VISSIM microscopic simulation. The results show that the proposed TSP with queue jumper lanes …

Hiding In Plain Sight? Timing And Transparency In The Administrative State, Anne Joseph O'Connell, Jacob Gersen Dec 2009

Hiding In Plain Sight? Timing And Transparency In The Administrative State, Anne Joseph O'Connell, Jacob Gersen

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Anecdotal evidence of agencies burying bad news is rife in law and politics. The bureaucracy regularly is accused of announcing controversial policies on holidays and weekends when public attention is elsewhere. We show that this conventional wisdom is wrong, or at least significantly incomplete. The conventional wisdom is riddled with theoretical holes, and there is little systematic empirical evidence to support it. After critiquing the conventional account of agencies hiding bad news, we articulate and defend a revised theory of strategic timing in administrative law. We argue that timing decisions rarely affect the visibility of decisions but can drive up …
