How Important Is Patient Privacy? A Reflection, Salima Farooq, Yasmin Parpio, Tazeen Saeed Ali

School of Nursing & Midwifery

Privacy is a basic human right; however, a patient's right to privacy is often violated because health care providers do not fulfill their ethical and professional responsibilities. There is an immediate need to preserve patients' privacy by health care professionals; a standardized policy on patients' privacy is important. This paper aims to analyze the significance of patents' privacy in health care. A case scenario of a pregnant woman from an antenatal setting has been integrated to support the concept of privacy in promoting and advocating patients' right.

5 U.S.C. § 553: Patent Elephants In Process Mouseholes, Thomas G. Field

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “As the district court in Tafas v. Duda (Tafas I) recounted, in 2006, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) proposed to limit numbers of continuing patent applications, requests for continued examination, and claims that could be made as a matter of right. In 2007, following notice and comment procedures that generated hundreds of comments, many critical, the USPTO published final rules consonant with those objectives.

The district court in Tafas I issued a preliminary injunction and ultimately rejected those rules, saying “[b]ecause the USPTO’s rulemaking authority under 35 U.S.C. § 2(b)(2) does not extend to substantive rules, and …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Bioceramics For Orthopedics And Tissue Culture Applications, Hande Demirkiran

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Hydroxyapatite is the most well known phosphate in the biologically active phosphate ceramic family by virtue of its similarity to natural bone mineral. Among all bioglass compositions Bioglass®45S5 is one of the most bioactive glasses. This study initially started by adding different amounts (1, 2.5, 5, 10, and 25 wt. %) of Bioglass®45S5 to synthetic hydroxyapatite in order to improve the bioactivity of these bioceramics. The chemistries formed by sintering and their effect on different material properties including bioactivity were identified by using various techniques, such as powder and thin film x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray …

Tribological Performance Of Ashless Antiwear Additives Under Extreme Pressure Conditions, Bohoon Kim Dec 2009

Tribological Performance Of Ashless Antiwear Additives Under Extreme Pressure Conditions, Bohoon Kim

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Zinc diakyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP) has been used in engine oil for several decades as an antiwear additive. However, ZDDP is the primary source of P, S and Zn in the exhaust, which results in frequent maintenance or replacement of exhaust gas treatment systems. The use of ashless additives is more desirable because of recent environmental regulations. The main goal of this research was to develop a fundamental understanding of how ashless compounds protect the tribological surface in comparison to ZDDP. X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy (XANES) has been performed on tribo and thermal films in order to investigate the …

Temperature Compensation Of Auxin Dependent Developmental Patterning, Nicholas J. Kaplinsky Dec 2009

Temperature Compensation Of Auxin Dependent Developmental Patterning, Nicholas J. Kaplinsky

Biology Faculty Works

The establishment of localized auxin gradients plays a central role in developmental patterning in plants. Auxin levels and responses have been shown to increase with temperature although developmental patterning is not affected. This suggests the existence of a homeostatic mechanism that ensures that patterning occurs normally over a range of temperatures. We recently described the cloning and characterization of BOBBER1 (BOB1), an Arabidopsis gene which encodes a small heat shock protein. BOB1 is required for the establishment of auxin gradients and for normal developmental patterning. BOB1 is also required for organismal thermotolerance and localizes to heat shock granules at elevated …

Jordan Park Collection [Finding Aid], Nelson Poynter Memorial Library. Special Collections And University Archives., Marta L. Jones, Heather Husted

Special Collections and University Archives Legacy Finding Aids: All Items

The materials in the Jordan Park Collection nearly were discarded; the good fortune of the preservation of these items is considerable. Poynter Library received the various photographs, property records, maps, documents, and scrapbooks from Dayton Stone on 18 June 2009. Stone had discovered these items while cleaning out an abandoned property in St. Petersburg. Subsequent review of the materials revealed the necessity of some conservation work and arrangement due to the condition in which these items had existed prior to his fortunate discovery. These records fill an important gap in our history. The initial Jordan Park residential units were constructed …

Analysis Of Factors Contributing To Roadside Tree Crashes In South Carolina, Vijay Bendigeri Dec 2009

Analysis Of Factors Contributing To Roadside Tree Crashes In South Carolina, Vijay Bendigeri

All Theses

The state of South Carolina has experienced a large number of fatalities and injuries resulting from run off the road tree related crashes. According to 2008 FARS data tree related fixed object fatal crashes in South Carolina (65%) are more than double that of the national (25.8%). Thus, trees are much bigger proportion of all roadside hazards in South Carolina than nationally. In order to achieve a safer roadside which is favorable to the road user, factors contributing to the tree related crashes should be critically analyzed to determine suitable safety improvements.
This research aims at qualitatively and quantitatively assessing …
