The Principled Control Of False Positives In Neuroimaging, Craig M. Bennett, George L. Wolford, Michael B. Miller
The Principled Control Of False Positives In Neuroimaging, Craig M. Bennett, George L. Wolford, Michael B. Miller
Dartmouth Scholarship
An incredible amount of data is generated in the course of a functional neuroimaging experiment. The quantity of data gives us improved temporal and spatial resolution with which to evaluate our results. It also creates a staggering multiple testing problem. A number of methods have been created that address the multiple testing problem in neuroimaging in a principled fashion. These methods place limits on either the familywise error rate (FWER) or the false discovery rate (FDR) of the results. These principled approaches are well established in the literature and are known to properly limit the amount of false positives across …

Method Of Transferring Strained Semiconductor Structure, Michael Nastasi
Method Of Transferring Strained Semiconductor Structure, Michael Nastasi
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
The transfer of strained semiconductor layers from one substrate to another substrate involves depositing a multilayer structure on a substrate having surface contaminants. An interface that includes the contaminants if formed in between the deposited layer and the substrate. Hydrogen atoms are introduced into the structure and allowed to diffuse to the interface. Afterward, the deposited multilayer structure is bonded to a second substrate and is separated away at the interface, which results in transferring a multilayer structure from one substrate at least one strained semiconductor layer and at least one strain-induced seed layer. The strain-induced seed layer can be …

Mir319a Targeting Of Tcp4 Is Critical For Petal Growth And Development In Arabidopsis, Anwesha Nag, Stacey King, Thomas Jack
Mir319a Targeting Of Tcp4 Is Critical For Petal Growth And Development In Arabidopsis, Anwesha Nag, Stacey King, Thomas Jack
Dartmouth Scholarship
In a genetic screen in a drnl-2 background, we isolated a loss-of-function allele in miR319a (miR319a129). Previously, miR319a has been postulated to play a role in leaf development based on the dramatic curled-leaf phenotype of plants that ectopically express miR319a (jaw-D). miR319a129 mutants exhibit defects in petal and stamen development; petals are narrow and short, and stamens exhibit defects in anther development. The miR319a129 loss-of-function allele contains a single-base change in the middle of the encoded miRNA, which reduces the ability of miR319a to recognize targets. Analysis of the expression patterns of the …

Introduction To Ritual Theory Ritual Practice, Catherine M. Bell
Religious Studies
This book undertakes such an analysis in two ways: first, through a critical reading of how the notion of ritual has been used in the study of religion, society, and culture; and second, through an attempt to carve out an approach to ritual activities that is less encumbered by assumptions about thinking and acting and more disclosing of the strategies by which ritualized activities do what they do. I do not provide a comprehensive history of the term, a review of the most famous ethnographic examples, or a revised theory of ritual—useful though these projects might be. The purpose of …

The liberal arts are higher education’s answer to Broadway, that "fabulous invalid" whose demise is predicted with both certainty and regularity. Claims that the liberal arts are in jeopardy have taken on increased urgency in the current economic climate. As students swell the ranks of community colleges, the presumption is that readily identifiable and employable skills rather than broad and deep learning are the primary focus of their educational ambitions.
But in the case of the liberal arts, conventional wisdom is at odds with what experience and current data suggest. For example, the benchmark freshmen surveys conducted each year by …

Biochemical And Haematological Evaluation Of Homoeopathic Drug Tribulus Terrestris In Rats, E. N. Sundaram, K. P. Singh, P. Uma Maheswara Reddy, K. R.J. Nair, C. Nayak
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy
Although in Homoeopathy different potencies of Tribulus terrestris (Ikshugandha) have been commonly prescribed in urinary affections, especially dysuria and in debilitated status of the sexual organs, no scientific experimental data has been documented to establish their safe use. The present study was, therefore, undertaken to generate preliminary data on the biochemical and haematological parameters with homoeopathic drug Tribulus terrestris. The four potencies (3x, 6x, 12x and 30c) of this drug were administered orally in daily doses of 0.1ml, 0.2ml and 0.5ml/rat for 14 days and their effects on biochemica/ and haematological parameters were studied on 21" and 28" day during …

One Million Plug-In Electric Vehicles On The Road By 2015, Ahmed Yousuf Saber, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy
One Million Plug-In Electric Vehicles On The Road By 2015, Ahmed Yousuf Saber, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
It is mentioned that one million plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles will be on the road by 2015 in United States to reduce emission. If one million electric vehicles (EVs) are connected to the existing electric grid randomly, peak load will be very high. Electrified transportation based on a traditional thermal power system will be costly economically and environmentally though it has a great value for electric power and transportation sectors. EVs cannot alone solve the emission problem completely since they need electric power, which is one of the main sources of emission. Therefore, significant emission reduction greatly depends on …
Structural Identification Using A Low-Cost Search Method, James W. Fonda, Steve Eugene Watkins
Structural Identification Using A Low-Cost Search Method, James W. Fonda, Steve Eugene Watkins
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
An easily implementable and trainable damage detection method is proposed and implemented for a simple truss structure. The approach uses the iterative search identification method and is compatible with low-cost and low-power microcontroller hardware. This method employs pattern matching for a data set from a strain sensor array and predicts location (truss member) and severity (member cross sectional area) of damage. As a health monitoring approach, the method is not as robust or rigorous as more complex methods. However, it has modest processing requirements and can handle noisy signals. The work presents an algorithm applied to a truss structure, the …

Proteolytic Regulation Of Toxin-Antitoxin Systems By Clppc In Staphylococcus Aureus, Niles P. Donegan, Earl T. Thompson, Zhibiao Fu, Ambrose L. Cheung
Dartmouth Scholarship
Bacterial toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems typically consist of a small, labile antitoxin that inactivates a specific longer-lived toxin. In Escherichia coli, such antitoxins are proteolytically regulated by the ATP-dependent proteases Lon and ClpP. Under normal conditions, antitoxin synthesis is sufficient to replace this loss from proteolysis, and the bacterium remains protected from the toxin. However, if TA production is interrupted, antitoxin levels decrease, and the cognate toxin is free to inhibit the specific cellular component, such as mRNA, DnaB, or gyrase. To date, antitoxin degradation has been studied only in E. coli, so it remains unclear whether similar mechanisms of regulation …

Real-Time Modeling Of Distributed Plug-In Vehicles For V2g Transactions, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Pinaki Mitra, Keith Corzine, Chris Huston
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A real-time model of a fleet of plug-in vehicles performing vehicle-to-grid (V2G) power transactions is presented in this paper. Two sets of four vehicles are connected to both the grid and to each other through a short transmission line. the real-time modeling is carried out on a Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS). This setup allows for two different case studies with either two distributed sets of four individual vehicles or two smart parking lots with several vehicles. Output power levels and charge/discharge times are scheduled intelligently in order to maximize profits from grid transactions based on one-day ahead electricity pricing. the …
