In Planta "Green Engineering" Of Variable Sizes And Exotic Shapes Of Gold Nanoparticles: An Integrative Eco-Friendly Approach, Daniel Lee Starnes

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Manipulating matter at the nanoscale creates materials endowed with unique optoelectronic and physicochemical attributes. Among the noble metals, the properties of gold in "nano" can be manipulated by varying, their shapes and sizes. Gold nanoparticles find several applications in electronics, medicine and environmental reclamation. Emphasis has been on the “green synthesis” of nanogold to mitigate the hazardous implications stemmed from conventional nanogold synthesis. However, it is not known if the in planta synthesis of nanogold particles could be “green engineered” as well for generating desirable sizes and exotic shapes. In the present study, we used inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis …

Extended Portraits, Matthew W. Schmitz

Art and Design

For my senior project, I wanted to do something photographically diverse and creative with the classmates of my major. I decided the focus of my project would be portraits and interviews documenting the experiences of those classmates; who they were as people and why they picked Cal Poly as their school. I researched various forms of portraiture and gathered those ideas and various questions to help flesh out my concept. My photo shoots experimented in various forms of alternative portraiture, accompanied with an answered questionnaire filled out by each of them. I wanted the finished product to be well laid …

Die Fetten Jahre Sind Vorbei: Die Verbindung Der Prozesse Zwischen Der Persönlichen Und Politischen Selbstfindung Der Protagonisten, Kendall Rucker Dec 2009

Die Fetten Jahre Sind Vorbei: Die Verbindung Der Prozesse Zwischen Der Persönlichen Und Politischen Selbstfindung Der Protagonisten, Kendall Rucker

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal

The following paper analyzes a very apparent connection that occurs in the movie “Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei”. Weingartner, the director, uses the leading characters’ jealousy, greed, love, and hatred to critique their political battle for self-righteousness. This paper observes the protagonists’ process of engaging in politics as activists, aiming to satisfy their ideals while discovering their personal satisfaction and political orientation. Their political activities and ideals either reflect or contradict their personal principles. The connection of these processes helps one understand and be critical about the motives of the main figures in the movie. This analysis will enable the …

Die Dichotomie Einer Zerstörten Stadt: Figurenrepräsentationen In Die Mörder Sind Unter Uns, Timothy Walker Dec 2009

Die Dichotomie Einer Zerstörten Stadt: Figurenrepräsentationen In Die Mörder Sind Unter Uns, Timothy Walker

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal

Wolfgang Staudte’s monumental film Die Mörder sind unter uns was the first film produced in post-WWII Germany. Staudte sets his film in Berlin, a city that has been utterly destroyed by war. In the film, he establishes a striking dichotomy between the two main characters, Dr. Mertens and Susanne. Staute uses cinematography and synecdoche to strengthen and further this dichotomy. These two perspectives, consequently representing two starkly different outlooks about the future of the city, construct Staudte’s dichotomy. Susanne has a positive post-war perspective and is accompanied by motifs of light and hope, while her counterpart, Dr. Mertens represents a …

From The Bronx Into The Wild! My Adventurous Experience At The Bronx Zoo, Lauren Noll

Student Theses 2001-2013

Many people defend zoos, claiming that they provide great opportunities in education, scientific research, and the overall preservation of wildlife worldwide. However, many people will take the opposing side, arguing that it is wrong to deprive animals of their natural habitats and lifestyles. One of the greatest controversies of our time pertains to the moral issues associated with keeping animals in captivity, such as in zoos and aquariums.

Paintings And Explorations, Scott Ender Dec 2009

Paintings And Explorations, Scott Ender

Art and Design

My senior project consisted of a large series of paintings on canvas. I created seven large scale paintings (36” x 48” size) which involved minimalism, typography, a “painterly” process, and abstraction. It was a series of explorations in working with my own two (physical) hands, rather than working on a computer as is the standard method of working for graphic designers. These paintings were done in hopes that the series would help me further define my artistic style, accumulate a larger body of work, and possibly discover a new form of painting.
