We Mourn The Death Of Umm Student Leann Dick, University Relations

University of Minnesota, Morris student, Leann Dick, passed away Wednesday evening December 2, 2009, as a result of injuries from an accidental fall that took place that morning off campus. Leann transferred to the University of Minnesota, Morris this fall and was majoring in biology and American Indian Studies.

Precise calibration of kilometer-scale interferometric gravitational wave detectors is crucial for source localization and waveform reconstruction. A technique that uses the radiation pressure of a power-modulated auxiliary laser to induce calibrated displacements of one of the ∼10 kg arm cavity mirrors, a so-called photon calibrator, has been demonstrated previously and has recently been implemented on the LIGO detectors. In this paper, we discuss the inherent precision and accuracy of the LIGO photon calibrators and several improvements that have been developed to reduce the estimated voice coil actuator calibration uncertainties to less than 2% (1σ). Sparse Estimation And Inference For Censored Median Regression, Justin Shows

Censored median regression has proved useful for analyzing survival data in complicated situations, such as when the variance is heteroscedastic, or the data contain outliers. The sparse estimation for censored median regression is an important problem for high dimensional survival data analysis. A new procedure is proposed to minimize an inverse-censoringprobability weighted least absolute deviation loss subject to the adaptive LASSO penalty and result in a sparse and robust median estimator. With a proper choice of tuning parameter, the procedure can identify the underlying sparse model consistently and has desired large-sample properties including root-n consistency and asymptotic normality. Diaroyl sulfides were prepared in one-pot reaction from ethylenediamine and carbon disulfide, via reaction of in situ generated ethylene-bis- carbamodithioates with aroyl chlorides. The reaction of diaroyl sulfides with acetylenic and ethylenic π-deficient compounds such as dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate, ethyl propiolate, (E)-1,4-diphenylbut-2-ene-1,4-dione and 1,4-diphenylbut-2-yne-1,4-dione afforded the corresponding thionylated products. NMR spectroscopic data of the isolated products were discussed. © ARKAT USA, Inc.

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

My thesis discusses the reasons for the creation of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization, in 1881. I discuss why Father Michael McGivney, a Catholic priest in New Haven, Connecticut, believed that the organization was necessary to prevent Catholic men from joining the "secret societies" of the nineteenth century. I also explain the present-day Knights of Columbus and how McGivney's vision is carried out today through the Order.

Increased Reliance On Wives As Breadwinners During The First Year Of The Recession, Kristin Smith

Carsey Publications

Among low-income families, the wages of employed wives account for the majority of family earnings, according to this Carsey brief. The analysis finds that in 2008, women contributed 56 percent of total family earnings, up from 51 percent in 2007. Also, husbands' education level and race are factors in how much wives contribute to family earnings.
