Degradation Of The Bond Strength Between Rebar And Concrete Due To The Impressed Cathodic Current, Jiang-Jhy Chang, Weichung Yeih, Ran Huang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this study, the degradation of the bond strength between the steel rebar and concrete by the impressed cathodic current was investigated. Experimental results showed that the bond strength degraded as the charging current density and the polarization time increased basically. A new parameter representing the total transferred electrons per unit protected area was proposed, and the bond strength was found to decrease as the parameter increased after some value.

The overall goal of this paper is to provide important information documenting and analyzing Taiwan’s trawl fishing fleet activities in the northeastern of Taiwan. Seasonal SST data are used to analyze different seasonal fishing patterns and the density of fleet dynamics of offshore trawl fleet is used to identify five distinct fishing areas (A, B, C, D, and E) in the northeastern of Taiwan. A Wilcoxon sign test is used to examine the variability in the percent of days spent in each fishing area from 1993 to 1996. Influence Of Surface Currents On Post-Nesting Migration Of Green Sea Turtles Nesting On Wan-An Island, Penghu Archipelago, Taiwan, I-Jiunn Cheng, Yu-Huai Wang

The relationships between ambient flows and the migration corridors of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) nesting at Wan-an Island, Penghu Archipelago in Taiwan Strait were determined. Six turtles deployed with Argos-linked satellite tags from 1996 to 2004 were used. The ambient flows were derived from the combination of ship board measurements, a global tidal model, and the geostrophic flows derived from sea surface height anomalies. The results showed that there were, basically, three migrating patterns. Turtles that migrated northeastward rode the main surface currents, traveling 2000 km in a month. Background:Although synovial cell sarcoma is a common tumor of the extremities, its occurrence in the thorax has been less frequently documented. Case Presentation: A 46-year-old Pakistani man presented with a 2 month history of progressively increasing cough and left lower chest pain. Initial evaluation was done using a chest x-ray, the Patient was found to have a large mass involving the lower portion of the left chest. The genes PTPN22 and HLA-DRB1 have been found by a number of studies to confer an increased risk for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which indicates that both genes play an important role in RA etiology. It is believed that they not only have strong association with RA individually, but also interact with other related genes that have not been found to have predisposing RA mutations. Rheumatoid Arthritis-Associated Gene-Gene Interaction Network For Rheumatoid Arthritis Candidate Genes, Chien-Hsun Huang, Lei Cong, Jun Xie, Bo Qiao, Shaw-Hwa Lo, Tian Zheng

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA, MIM 180300) is a chronic and complex autoimmune disease. Using the North American Rheumatoid Arthritis Consortium (NARAC) data set provided in Genetic Analysis Workshop 16 (GAW16), we used the genotype-trait distortion (GTD) scores and proposed analysis procedures to capture the gene-gene interaction effects of multiple susceptibility gene regions on RA. In this paper, we focused on 27 RA candidate gene regions (531 SNPs) based on a literature search. Statistical significance was evaluated using 1000 permutations. HLADRB1 was found to have strong marginal association with RA. We identified 14 significant interactions (p < 0.01), which were aggregated into an association network among 12 selected candidate genes PADI4, FCGR3, TNFRSF1B, ITGAV, BTLA, SLC22A4, IL3, VEGF, TNF, NFKBIL1, TRAF1-C5, and MIF. Based on our and other contributors’ findings during the GAW16 conference, we further studied 24 candidate regions with 336 SNPs. We found 23 significant interactions (p-value < 0.01), nine interactions in addition to our initial findings, and the association network was extended to include candidate genes HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C, CTLA4, and IL6. As we will discuss in this paper, the reported possible interactions between genes may suggest potential biological activities of RA.

Current forecasts by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are that the Pacific Ocean will experience El Niño conditions in late 2009 and into 2010. These forecasts are similar to past El Niño events in 1972–1973, 1982–1983, 1986–1987, and 2002–2003.

Evaluating the hydrologic conditions for these past El Niño events reveals that during these times, surface water supply conditions improved in many parts of the United States, including the Southeast, Midwest, and Southwest. At the same time, the Pacific Northwest and other specific regions of the United States experienced below-average water supply conditions. This is consistent with the …

This study examines the link between household food insecurity and child behavior problems mediated through parental characteristics (parenting stress, parental warmth, psychological distress, and parent’s self-esteem) using two waves of data from the Child Development Supplement in the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. Analyses of fixedeffects models are conducted on a low-income sample of 416 children from 249 households. This study finds that the effects of food insecurity on child behavior problems are mediated by parenting stress. However, two robustness tests show different results from those of the fixed-effects models. This inconsistency suggests that the complicated relationship between household food …

This paper is concerned with the fundamental properties associated with the Nomoto models. Specifically, the state space model associated with the first order Nomoto model is both observable and controllable. The state space model associated with the second order Nomoto model is also observable; however, it is controllable only if the effective sway time constant is different from the effective yaw time constant. The zero appearing in the transfer function model is found responsible for the overshoot behaviors, which are typical in the yaw rate for large rudder angle steering. This work analyzes non-Darcy flow and heat transfer in a vertical slot filled with a porous matrix. The left and right vertical boundaries of the porous system are maintained at higher and lower temperatures, respectively. The horizontal boundaries are assumed to be impermeable and insulated. The vertical boundaries are either completely impermeable, where free convection is induced, or partially permeable in a way to simulate the wall leakage in the building materials, where both air infiltration and free convection exist. This inquiry considers the meaning of abduction and its uses in Economic Science. Abductive logic is discussed at some length, in order to clarify how it is used in this inquiry. In addition, abduction is traced from its appearances in the writings of pragmatist philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce and how its meaning is later carried on in Thorstein Veblen’s Institutional Economics. Peirce’s influence proves foundational for Veblen’s contributions, as well as for the writings of John Roger Commons. My research suggests that after Commons, Peirce’s influence in economics wanes. The majority of literature regarding the numerical simulation of arc discharges in gaseous environments has used a plasma physics approach. Virtually all simulations treat the discharge as an idealized gaseous plasma, which can be described by temperature, pressure, and electric field. This approach can work well if the media is a shielding gas such as Argon; however, the approach does not work well for processes such as underwater welding, EDM, and underwater discharges used to generate high purity particles. We use laser high-order harmonics and a polarization-ratioreflectance technique to determine the optical constants of copper and oxidized copper in the wavelength range 10-35 nm. This measurement resolves previously conflicting data sets, where disagreement on optical constants of copper in the extreme ultraviolet most likely arises from inadvertent oxidation of samples before measurement.

Background: Although the message of "global climate change'' is catalyzing international action, it is local and regional changes that directly affect people and ecosystems and are of immediate concern to scientists, managers, and policy makers. A major barrier preventing informed climate-change adaptation planning is the difficulty accessing, analyzing, and interpreting climate-change information. To address this problem, we developed a powerful, yet easy to use, web-based tool called Climate Wizard (http://ClimateWizard.org) that provides non-climate specialists with simple analyses and innovative graphical depictions for conveying how climate has and is projected to change within specific geographic areas throughout the world.
