Mean Survival Time From Right Censored Data, Ming Zhong, Kenneth R. Hess

A nonparametric estimate of the mean survival time can be obtained as the area under the Kaplan-Meier estimate of the survival curve. A common modification is to change the largest observation to a death time if it is censored. We conducted a simulation study to assess the behavior of this estimator of the mean survival time in the presence of right censoring.

We simulated data from seven distributions: exponential, normal, uniform, lognormal, gamma, log-logistic, and Weibull. This allowed us to compare the results of the estimates to the known true values and to quantify the bias and the variance. Our …

In this paper we examine the problem of transient growth in Iterative Learning Co ntrol (ILC). Transient growth is generally avoided in design by using robust monotonic convergence (RMC) criteria. However, RMC leads to fundamental performance limitations. We consider the possibility of allowing safe transient growth in ILC algorithms as a means to circumvent these limitations. Here the pseudospectra is used for the first time to study transient growth in ILC. Basic properties of the pseudospectra that are relevant to the ILC problem are presented. Growth factor binding molecules having a plurality of peptide loops attached to a non-peptide organic scaffold, preferably having pseudo-six amino acid peptide loops with four amino acid sidechains. The growth factor binding molecules specifically bind various growth factors and are suitable for treating a subject having tumors or restinosis. In one embodiment a platelet-derived growth factor binding molecule is disclosed that is used to inhibit tumor growth and angiogenesis in solid tumors.

A high efficiency solar cell includes a CIGSS absorber layer formed by a process including selenizing a metal precursor using diethyl selenium to form the CIGSS absorber layer.

A conduction structure for infrared microbolometer sensors and a method for sensing electromagnetic radiation may be provided. The microbolometer may include a first conductor layer and a second conductor layer. Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (AChRs) are pentameric proteins that form agonist-gated cation channels through the plasma membrane. AChR agonists and antagonists are potential candidates for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Cembranoids are naturally occurring diterpenoids that contain a 14-carbon ring. These diterpenoids interact with AChRs in complex ways: as irreversible inhibitors at the agonist sites, as noncompetitive inhibitors, or as positive modulators, but no cembranoid was ever shown to have agonistic activity on AChRs. The cembranoid eupalmerin acetate displays positive modulation of agonist-induced currents in the muscle-type AChR and in the related gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) type A receptor. The Albany Movement And The Limits Of Nonviolent Protest In Albany, Georgia, 1961-1962, Brendan Kevin Nelligan

This thesis argues that the failure of the Albany Movement to force desegregation and gain concessions from the white establishment resulted from the use of a deeply flawed nonviolent protest model that required vast public dedication. The absence of this dedication led directly to the defeat of the Albany Movement in 1962. Further, the paper demonstrates that King and the SCLC implemented the same defective strategy in Birmingham a year later, very nearly leading to the failure of what Americans commonly see as a victory for the Civil Rights movement. This study examines two recently-developed DMT-based methods, one CRR7.5-KD boundary curve and one CRR7.5-ED boundary curve, for evaluating the liquefaction resistance of soils using in-situ test data. The collected data consist of a number of liquefied and non-liquefied case histories, which were performed shortly after the disastrous Chi-Chi earthquake in 1999. The results of examining the CRR7.5-KD and CRR7.5-ED boundary curves showed that both curves are capable of accurately estimating the liquefaction resistance of soils and thus the liquefaction potential of soils. The developed DMT-based methods therefore have the potential to be an alternative to the existing procedure of liquefaction …

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have quickly become the norm in dissecting the genetic basis of complex diseases. Family-based association approaches have the advantages of being robust to possible hidden population structure in samples. Most of these methods were developed with limited markers. Their applicability and performance for GWAS need to be examined. In this report, we evaluated the properties of the family-based association method implemented by ASSOC in the S.A.G.E package using the simulated data sets for the Framingham Heart Study, and found that ASSOC is a highly useful tool for GWAS.

This paper proposes a distribution level static synchronous compensator (DSTATCOM) for fast load compensation of unbalanced loads in electric power distribution systems. For fast response requirement, a new feedforward compensation scheme is derived and employed in the paper. First, the compensation scheme of the DSTATCOM is derived with the symmetrical components method. Then, computer simulation with the program Matlab/Simulink preliminarily verifies the effectiveness of the proposed DSTATCOM. Accordingly, a hardware prototype is built with a floating-point DSP TMS320C6711-based system. Use of a current-regulated PWM (CRPWM) inverter as the power stage of the DSTATCOM generates needed compensation currents for real-time load …

The phenomenon of physical wake flow is complex and remains relatively unknown, especially for the relationship between the span-wise motions of separated shear layers and low frequency variations embedded in the vortex shedding process of upstream disturbances. In this study experiments were executed by situating a mesh grid and controlling cylinder upstream. Results showed that the integral time scale of the span-wise motions for a separated shear layer was close to that of the low frequency variations for an upstream disturbance. In this study, we strive to combine the advantages of fuzzy logic control (FLC), genetic algorithms (GA), H∞ tracking control schemes, smooth control and adaptive laws to design an adaptive fuzzy sliding model controller for the rapid and efficient stabilization of complex and nonlinear systems. First, we utilize a reference model and a fuzzy model (both involving FLC rules) to describe and well-approximate an uncertain, nonlinear plant. Protein Rrcovered From Oyster Wash Water By Ultrafiltration And Their Utilization As Oyster Sauce Through Fermentation, Chyuan-Yuan Shiau, Tuu-Jyi Chai

The use of ultrafiltration to recover proteins from oyster wash water was found to increase the protein concentration by 18 folds. The concentrations of total suspended solids and chemical oxygen demand in the permeate were reduced by 98 and 47%, respectively. Fermentation was a good method to improve the flavor of the retentate from ultrafiltration. The increase in concentrations of extractive-N, free amino acids and small peptides supported the idea that the fermentation process with Koji (cultured with Aspergillus oryzae) could accelerate the hydrolysis of the recovered protein.
