UNL Libraries collects library and information studies materials to support the daily work, professional assignments, professional development, and research activities of the library faculty and staff. UNL does not have an undergraduate or graduate program in Library and Information studies, however, UNO offers undergraduate and masters programs in Library Media and works collaboratively with the University of Missouri School of Information Science and Learning Technologies to offer a Masters in Library Science program in Nebraska. UNL Libraries maintains basic collection of Library and Information Science indexing and abstracting services and scholarly electronic journals. Technology has changed the focus of this collection in recent years. Presently, digital access to both maps and GIS data is the primary goal. However, maintenance of the paper map collection is vital, as it supports the graduate and undergraduate curricula in many areas. The paper map collection supports students studying geology, natural resources, geography, Great Plains studies, political sciences, history, community and urban planning, and architecture.

The University Libraries are a regional depository for U. S. Government documents, and the majority of maps in the Libraries' collection are distributed through this program. Although, most new maps currently received through …

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers a B.S. It also offers an M.S. degree and participates in the "Chemical and Materials Engineering Field" and the "Mechanics and Energetics Field" options of the Unified Ph.D. Program of the College of Engineering and Technology. The Department offers coursework in heat transfer, fluid mechanics, solar energy engineering, the design and construction of machinery, manufacturing processes, aerodynamics, metallurgy, and nuclear engineering. The major research interests of the Department include metallurgical engineering, thermal-fluid mechanics, and systems and design engineering.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Collection Development Policies

The nursing collection supports the basic teaching, research and service activities of the College of Nursing—Lincoln Division. The College of Nursing—Lincoln Division faculty, staff and students heavily use the nursing and related biomedical research collections available from the UNMC McGoogan Library of Medicine. They have UNMC affiliate status and remote access privileges to the UNMC Library collections and subscriptions. They also have been granted UNL affiliate status and remote access privileges to the UNL collections and subscriptions by the UNL Dean of Libraries. Specific research needs are supplemented through interlibrary loan, primarily supplied by the UNMC McGoogan Library of Medicine.

Release From Cross-Orientation Suppression Facilitates 3d Shape Perception, Andrea Li, Qasim Zaidi

Publications and Research

Cross-orientation suppression (COS) in striate cortex has been implicated in the efficient encoding of visual stimuli. We show that release from COS facilitates the decoding of 3-D shape. In planar surfaces overlaid with textures, slanting the surface can increase the visibility of the component parallel to the slant. Since this component provides the orientation flows that signify 3-D shape, the enhancement of visibility facilitates 3-D slant perception. Contrast thresholds reveal that this enhancement results from a decrease in COS when 3-D slant creates a frequency mismatch between texture components. BACKGROUND: Body mass index (BMI) will be a reportable health measure in the United States (US) through implementation of Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) guidelines. We evaluated current documentation of BMI, and documentation and control of associated risk factors by BMI category, based on electronic health records from a 12-clinic primary care network.

METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 79,947 active network patients greater than 18 years of age seen between 7/05 - 12/06. We defined BMI category as normal weight (NW, 18-24.9 kg/m²), overweight (OW, 25-29.9), and obese (OB, ≥ 30). We measured documentation …

On June 30, 2009 an arbitrator concluded that Natural Resource District (NRD) ground water plans are insufficient to keep Nebraska in compliance with the Republican River Compact (RRC) settlement in dry years. The September 30, 2009 Cornhusker Economics explored the significance of the arbitrator’s decision. In October, the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources (DNR) proposed three possible dry year plans that would keep Nebraska in RRC compliance. This newsletter explores the DNR proposals.

Previous research has established the influence of the division of household labor between spouses on marital satisfaction, as well as the mental health of each spouse. Less is known about how the division of labor changes during the course of marriage. The family development perspective suggests that division of labor will change in response to different stages and circumstances, while the homeostasis perspective suggests that the division of labor will remain stable throughout the life course. This study used data from a 35 year longitudinal study of married women to examine changes of household division of labor over the life …

The professional status of further education lecturers has been widely debated and contested within the published literature. This article presents the results of a series of semi-structured interviews undertaken with a small sample of college lecturers working within a partner college network in south-west England. Regardless of the level of the higher/further education teaching the lecturers identities remain strongly rooted in their role as teachers and commitment to supporting learners attain their educational ambitions.
